A few weeks ago I checked a wonderful Signal Red Mercedes-Benz 560SEC. I explained that on some Mercedes, red looks pretty good and suits the car well. Other cars, like sedans, red is a pretty tough sell for me. Encase you haven’t noticed by now, this 1991 300E that I am looking at today is painted in that same Signal Red. It is a very clean W124 that has under 100,000 miles and I really dislike it. Let me tell you why.

W124 is the Mercedes-Benz internal chassis-designation for the 1984 to 1995/96 version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class as well as the first generation to be officially referred to as E-Class. The W124 models replaced the W123 models after 1984 and were succeeded by the W210 E-Class after 1995. GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1991 Mercedes 300E for consideration. This old school Benz is coming to you in a bright red exterior paint and paired with a tan interior. This is a great running vehicle inside and out powered by a strong 3.0 Liter V8 engine and paired with a smooth shifting automatic transmission. Loaded up with leather wood trim air conditioning cruise control airbags power windows tachometer ABS brakes AM/FM radio power sunroof power door locks rear window defogger tilt steering alloy wheels and much more. This is an Arizona car as you can see from our photos the undercarriage is dry and clean. The exterior paint looks very deep and shines like new after receiving a full professional detail. Yikes. This W124 is bordering on offensive territory for me. I don’t get why Mercedes went with two different shades of red on this car. The Signal Red on the majority of the car is OK I guess, but the lower cladding in a different shade of red is extremely odd. Add in some worn out chrome wheels and this is a ghastly combination. This isn’t uncommon either with the W124. We featured a 300TE 4Matic in the color combination last year and while it doesn’t look as bad, it still seems really odd to me. The Palomino interior isn’t helping me like this car either as I think it only clashes with red paint and the chrome wheels. The old tinted windows aren’t helping matters either. This might be a perfectly fine car, but you’d have to force me to buy it. It’s just all too much for me.

The even stranger thing is the asking price for this car: $14,900. Yes, $14,900 for a regular 300E with 88,000 miles. I can literally go find a W124 500E for a few grand more than this. I don’t know where this seller number at but surely they are shooting for the moon. You could cut this price in half and I still think it would be too expensive. I know clean W124s are starting to come hard to find, but not at this level. Not almost $15,000.
