2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow

Last week on Christmas day I looked at a 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow that had a little bit of a mixed reaction. Even though it had only 70,000 miles and spent the majority of its life in Florida, the wood on the center console had some odd stuff going on with it. That is often the one minus of cars in the regions of no snow: you have to deal with the heat, along with the sun, that can wreak havoc on wood and leather. For the $17,000 asking price, you could probably find a better car or at least a better deal if you planned on driving it regularly. Today, I might have found that better deal. This Silver Arrow up for sale Atlanta, Georgia has 40,000 more miles but of course has some flaws to go along with those miles. The good news is the price is much cheaper than $17,000. How cheap?

Only 1,400 of this Limited Edition SL500 Silver Arrow were made. Except for having a few blemishes I personally consider this car to be in excellent condition, but I have listed it in very good condition with its primary flaws being some rock chips in the paint and a couple scrapes on the wheel rims (See photos). And it BEGS for speed! I bought this car with 4,300 miles on it and have put a little over 105K more on it with plenty of TLC. Regularly conditioned the leather seats for as long as I have owned the car. More recent TLC includes new convertible top, refinished leather steering wheel, plugs/plug wires, AC compressor, new battery, and more. Latest factory-scheduled service was completed last month along with adding new motor mounts. Serviced exclusively by MB dealerships since I have owned it. Runs as good or better with the new plugs/wires as when I bought it, and that is not an exaggeration. I have routinely averaged 17-19 mpg through the years with as high as 26 mpg on longer highway drives. Very solid vehicle. Great opportunity to drive an $88,000 car for under $12,000. Includes rolling hard-top storage rack with cloth hard-top cover. Truly an amazing car for the money! Make someone HAPPY on Christmas morning!!

This is an interesting example. It has some minor cosmetic issues, but the mechanicals seem to be fully sorted. There are some rock chips that aren’t the most appealing and the Silver Arrow wheels has some curb marks on them. Not a massive deal, but these wheels are unique only to the Silver Arrow and nearly impossible to find used. I’m sure they can repaired or you could just drive on them as-is. One interesting thing is that the steering wheel leather was refinished which I can probably guess was from the white leather not holding up so well. The car seems to have a nice list of repairs from the dealer including the AC compressor, which seems a little odd, but maybe a little bit more common in somewhere as hot as Atlanta. The rest of the stuff is pretty common for the R129 and the M113 to have been replaced at this mileage and age.

The seller is asking just under $12,000 and I think that is pretty fair. I’d expect a non-Silver Arrow R129 with this mileage and maintenance to be in the same ball park with the price so you can assume this is probably a good buy if you plan on selling it in six month or six years. I honestly think these are going to hold their value pretty well, especially if you can find a SL600 Silver Arrow. Are they going to be $40,000 in five years? I wouldn’t bet on it. Buy today and not lose any money as long as you keep it nice? Much safer bet.

2000 Mercedes-Benz G500 Neiman Marcus

Remember when you used to order your entire vehicle from the Christmas catalog? Yeah, me either. But this is exactly what six very wealthy people did in 1999. In one of the strangest marketing moves I’ve seen, our friends at Europa International, the G-Wagen importer before Mercedes officially starting bringing in the G500 in 2002, partnered with luxury department store Neiman Marcus to sell a special edition G500 through their Christmas catalog. It was a three page spread (attached below) with a few photos and a paragraph of information all to hit you with the price tag: $160,000. For those keeping score at home, that is nearly $240,000 in today’s money. What did you get for all that dough? A G500 with a special two-tone interior and Swedish Birch wood trim.  Like I mentioned, they only managed to sell six of these. I am not sure if you ordered this and the G factory would build them or they only built six to sell. My guess is the former.

Today, one of these Neiman Marcus Gs is up for sale in the Atlanta area. This is one of two that I’ve ever even see photos of and luckily for the next owner of this G500, it has been cared for and loved over the past 17 years. Question is, are you willing to pay a pretty big premium for it?

I am selling my overly maintained 2000 Mercedes-Benz Neiman-Marcus Limited Edition G500. It has 92,385 excessively maintained miles on the clock. There is no rust of any kind, since it has never spent any time in the rust belt. Exterior is Obsidian Black Metallic in good condition, with some easily buffable light pin stripes from brush in the Desert Southwest. Interior is two tone Black and Tan Leather Upholstery with Swedish Birch Wood Trim. Extras included are:

MB Factory Brush Guard
Europa Int’l Narrow Running Boards
Five (5) 16″ Atik Alloy Wheels with LT265/75R16 Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S Tires with 13/32″ tread remaining in a 5 tire rotation sequence. Wheels are scuff and damage free.
G-wagenaccessories Spare Wheel Cover with Lockable Compartment
Trailer Hitch Receiver with Harness for Brake Controller and 7-pin RV Connector
OEM MB Accessory Towing Mirrors
JW Speaker LED Headlights
LED Backup Lights
G-wagenaccessories Cargo Area LED Lighting
Special Wiper Relays to allow adjustment of intermittent wiper timing for both front and rear
SiriusXM Radio Module connected to a fully working Audio 30 AM/FM/WB/CD/Cassette Head Unit
Complete unused Factory Tool Kit.
Original factory Hella Emergency Lantern
Complete Set of Owners Manuals
Original Window Sticker
Factory Maintenance Manual
Log Book of all service done since purchased in 2002.
Two (2) Keys with operating IR Lock/Unlock Control
Emergency Credit Card Key with Operating IR Lock/Unlock Control
One (1) Pair of Rhino Rack Cross Bars

This unique and collectable SUV originally sold for $160,000.00 through the 2000 Neiman-Marcus Christmas Catalog (pristine copy included), and only 6 were sold. I am the second owner since 2002 and have overly maintained and fixed things as needed. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. It can be inspected in the Atlanta, GA area.

Since this vehicle is also listed locally, I reserve the right to end this auction at any time.

This G500 is pretty well known in the small G-Wagen community and the general conscious is that it is a winner. You can see the owner has a big list of extras he has added over the years in addition to mentioning he has an entire log book of maintenance and repairs since 2002. The photos aren’t great and you can see this G is actually quite dirty, both inside and out, but I don’t think this matters one bit to the serious buyers. You don’t buy a Europa G by accident or a whim and you certainly don’t pony up the asking price for this one without knowing what you are getting yourself into.

The asking price of $50,000 certainly is high compared to other G500s from this era, but it is tough to say it isn’t warranted. The rarity, long-term ownership history, maintenance records and never-ending demand for these all add up to this asking price. If you are somehow a person out there waiting for this one of six Neiman Marcus editions to pop up for sale somewhere, jump now. I don’t think it is going to last very long at all and I’m sure they’ll be plenty of inquires. I’m just happy to add this one to database after all these years of existing but never actually seeing one for sale.

Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC Koenig Specials Twin Turbo

Back when the metal was heavy and the hair was high, the cars of Willy König ruled the earth. Koenig Specials GmbH was a German tuning house that took already outrageous cars on their own from Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz and turned them up to 11. Unlike the majority of the tuning houses and coachbuilders from the same era, Koeing made cars that matched their bark with an even bigger bite. In addition to outlandish body work and 13 inch wide wheels, Koenig had a tradition of twin-turbocharging cars that made some of them capable of 200 mph and 0-60 runs under 4 seconds. One very special Ferrari Testarossa that was built by Koenig produced 1,000 hp and recorded a top speed of 229 mph. Today, these cars are still admired and now that everything from the 1980s is cool and very collectible. That is what we have with this car today.

This is a 1986 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC that received the full Koenig treatment including a twin-turbo kit on the M117 V8. It has a body kit that only the Batmoblie rivals and wheels deep enough to cook chicken soup in. Inside, Recaro C Classic seats only begin the wildness with a second gauge cluster added on the dash and enough wood for a dining room table. I rarely see these Koenig Specials come up for sale and this example in Canada is already pulling in big bids. How high will it go?

Hi
I am selling my 1986 Koenig Specials SEC Twin Turbo

This is a very special car imported from Germany.
I have a copy of the original German registration showing the KS modifications including:
– Body
– Suspension – rims – tiers
– twin turbo set up
The interior has the very exquisite Recaro Classic Seats and lots of wood.
When you sit in it, it will take you back in time!
This car is in excellent condition with super low mileage, 55879 km.
Absolutely no rust !
A very limited amount of these cars where produced in Germany, putting this car in a very exclusive class of its own. In fact this is the only car I know of in North America that has this extremely rare set up. If you have any question please contact me.
I am offering help with shipping to the USA and world wide with experience. Buyers responsible to pay full shipping cost.
Please also know that this car is older then 25 years so importing it will be just as easy as buying a vehicle from an other state.

ORIGINAL VIN # WDB1260441A221697

Like I have been mentioning recently, suddenly everything 1980s and 90s is cool again and this one might be the king. Everything is totally outrageous, including the twin-turbo setup, and thankfully looks to be well sorted. Judging by the price of the other Koenig Speicals cars, this one was probably many hundreds of thousands of dollars when new. What does that mean for them now? Well, back in 2015 Carter looked at another C126 from Koeing but that one wasn’t even twin-turboed. As you might of noticed, that one was listed for $215,000. Was it worth it? Probably not. To pull those kind of prices now you need to have the engine modifications to go along with the cosmetic stuff. What should this seller expect? I’m not sure. The car being in Canada hurts it a little as you’ll need to fill out some paperwork to bring the car to the US, but I doubt that will stop any serious bidder.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing AMG

Here is a special one. This is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing AMG. You are probably thinking to yourself that ”300SL Gullwing” and ”AMG” don’t go together and up until the year 1996, you would be correct. That is because in 1996, AMG began taking original W198 Gullwing and Roadsters, and putting modern AMG drivetrains and interiors in them.  Who thought this was a good idea? The Royal Family of Brunei. Remember him? According to AMG, 11 of these cars were produced from 1996 to 2008 with five going to the Royal Family and the other six going to qualified AMG customers. The rumored price tag at the time was over €1,000,000 thanks to AMG literally having to rebuild these cars from a bare metal shell.

This 1955 model that was converted in 2000 is one of only two right hand drive cars built. It was imported to Japan when the conversion was wrapped up and has been with its only owner ever since. Now it is coming up for auction in Tokyo, Japan soon. But first, lets take a look at what exactly a 300SL Gullwing AMG is:

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing AMG at BH Auction

Year: 1955
Model: 300SL Gullwing AMG
VIN: N/A
Engine: 6.0 liter V8
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: N/A
Price: Reserve Auction

・One of only eleven converted by AMG
・One of only two RHDs produced
・6.0 litre V8 M119 engine mated to a four speed automatic gearbox
・Updated to a more modern spec all around
・Comes with a pair of original seats in “as new” condition
・Currently fitted with a pair of after market bucket type seats
・Completed and imported into Japan in year 2000
・Single owner since new
・Comes with hundreds of pictures taken during conversion and owner’s manual

To put it simply, the only thing that is original to the W198 is the body shell and some of the interior. Everything under the body is a mash-up of 90s Mercedes parts. The engine is a M119 modified to 6 liters that makes 380 horsepower. The transmission is a 722.4 4-speed automatic connected to the rear end from a R129. The brakes are from a C36 AMG and with some of the rear suspension pieces from a W124. The wheels were borrowed from the SL600 which look totally out-of-place on something like this. I know they needed wider tires for the extra power, but it looks really odd on this car. Like I said, everything is sourced from somewhere in the Mercedes parts bin and AMG made it all somehow work together. You’ll even notice on the airbox there are two channels to accommodate the chassis braces to the front core support. You’ll only see that airbox in these cars. Inside, the dash kind of resembles the original 300SL dash, but you can tell it has been highly modified and isn’t nearly as nice. One interesting thing is the steering wheel is the same as the one from the CLK-GTR. That isn’t the case for all these converted cars as depending on the year, you got a different wheel. The center console and armrest is a modified R129 unit and they had to put the parking brake handle inside the console where it looks kind of strange. AMG did managed to fix this in the later cars. Why did they do all this? My guess is that the Sultan and his family really loved the original Gullwing, but it just wasn’t usable in a place like Brunei where it can get very hot. That also explains the modern air conditioning system. The bean counters at Mercedes and AMG probably did the math and said it wasn’t worth it to build less than 11 cars no matter how big the check was from the Sultan, so the other cars were made it make up the cost of all the engineering and labor that went into making this car a reality. Was it worth it?

Back when this project started, the 300SL wasn’t a million dollar car. From the late 80s into the early 2000s, you could grab a Gullwing or Roadster in nice shape for under $200,000. Then in about 2003-2004, prices took off and haven’t slowed down until just very recently. Today, to even sniff a W198 in any condition, you need to be prepared to spend $1,000,000 and the price only goes up from there. No one saw this coming, not even Mercedes, so it wasn’t a huge deal to cannibalize a handful of these cars to make one of their very best customers in the world happy. Today, this would never happen and probably isn’t ever going to happen again. Every single one of these original W198s are precious and it is getting to the point where those who bought these 30-40 years ago can’t enjoy them now because of what the values are now. Even selling a long-term owner W198 is more difficult now because the 1031 exchange on classic cars recently expired and while 300SL owners are usually well-off, they aren’t “paying taxes, both federal and state, on 1.6 million dollars well-off” where it makes sense to sell if they don’t have to.

So what should this car bring? Well, the auction is saying ¥135,000,000 – 160,000,000 ($1,252,435 – 1,484,367) as an estimate, which is really close to what an actual 300SL Gullwing sells for. Much to my surprise, a few of these have gone up for auction in the past few years. A 2006 build sold in 2009 for $583,506 and a 2001 build sold in 2014 for $925,800. You can bet this climb is only going to continue. I suppose there is no crying over spilled milk now that these cars are already built, so you might as well enjoy them, but you know Mercedes is kicking themselves now given how the W198 is cherished now. I can’t wait to see what this one goes for.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL 6.0 AMG

One of my new year’s resolutions on this site is to feature less run-of-the-mill common cars and more really special and rare cars. I’m off to a decent start with a 500SEC Koenig Specials Twin-Turbo and a 300SL Gullwing AMG from this past week. Today, I ran across another really cool car and has some awfully cool options. This is a 1991 560SEL 6.0 AMG up for sale in Japan. It looks like it was a normal 560SEL that was converted by AMG Japan into one of the most well-equipped W126s I’ve ever seen. What exactly is so special about it? Wait until you see the rear seats and under the hood.

General topic
Rare 126 sedan based AMG. Running is superb. The condition is also the best and the condition of Recaro sheet is also the highest. AMG fan must watch.

This is a no expense spared AMG build if I’ve ever seen one. Outside of the typical cosmetic treatment you usually see on these cars with the bumpers and wheels, this one received the 6.0 M119 heads conversion. Somehow, AMG Japan figured out a way to put the heads from the early M119 engines on the block of the M117 that came in the V8 W126s. From what I understand, AMG Japan bought raw heads from Mercedes and made them to their own specifications to get them to work with the M117 block. Word was that the power figure hovered around 375 horsepower which totally explains the rear seats. Or maybe they just wanted to be extra special. In the back of this W126, you have another set of Recaros with the high side bolstering and adjustable to your hearts desire. Between the seats, I think that is a refrigerator setup which was also very uncommon. Everything else on this car is just as cool and bespoke. The only one little flaw I caught was it looks like there was some kind of badge glued on the wood above the climate control buttons that left some residue. Not a big deal with some adhesive remover.

Usually I am pretty bearish on most prices for cars I look at, but I can’t really argue this one. $65,000 buys you the most extreme and complete W126 AMG out there. It has everything and looks amazing just sitting still. Dare I say this is an investment grade car? I can see in years time that these are going to pull even bigger numbers now that the AMG brand is only getting watered down more and more while people are trying to grab what they can from the early days. Clearly only the most hardcore of Mercedes fans are going to understand this car and its value, but I don’t see how you can lose with this one.

Thanks to our reader Yasco for the tip!

Wednesday Wheels Roundup

Welcome back to Wednesday Wheel Roundup. Today, I wanted to check out a few sets of wheels that differ quite a lot in size and taste. First up are a set of 19” Mercedes-Benz Monoblock wheels. They are a 19×8.5 and 19x.9.5 that let you run some really wide tires if that is the look you are going for. These are seen as the ultimate wheels for the W140 or the R129. Next are another set of 19″ wheels but this time from Brabus, followed by a hard-to-find set of BMW Style 38s. These 3-spokes are now back in style thanks to the resurgence of everything 80s and 90s now. Speaking of, Carter tracked down a few sets of DP Motorsports wheels following up on yesterday’s DP935. Carter also threw in one of his favorite 911 wheel designs – the Speedlines from the 993 Targa. The last two sets are great options for the cars who want to upgrade from their stock 14″ wheels into a 15” set, but keep the OEM look. A very clean set of ATS wheels that look identical to the factory 14” Bundts open up an entirely new world of tire choices and if you want to keep your hubcaps, a set of 15″ steelies with the ultra-rare 15″ hubcaps that were on the W100 600 and some ambulances in Europe.

2001 Mercedes-Benz ML320 6×4

I swear I am not on some kind of mission to find every six-wheeled Mercedes-Benz SUV out there — either factory or homemade. Somehow I tend to bump into them out of no where and they are often too unique or interesting to pass up. Today’s vehicle, a 2001 ML320 6×4 up for sale in Central England, qualifies as awfully interesting. As the title states, this W163 is still only a four-wheel drive and not six-wheel drive but that doesn’t make it any less crazy to look at. It looks like they grabbed the fenders, or custom-made them, from the ML55 AMG to cover the massive tires on all three axles. Although that isn’t even the craziest thing they fabricated up to get this ML to look this way.

Whoever dreamed up and finished off this bodywork, bravo to them. They continued the real quarter panels the entire way out over another axle but kept the rear glass and the lower hatch metal in its factory position. It totally makes sense what they did when you think about it, but actually pulling it off and making it seamless is a whole other battle. Yes, the bullbar looks a little odd as well as the rear tire carrier, but this could be a lot worse. I think the biggest question I have is ”Why?” and why wouldn’t they go the extra step to make it a true 6×6. The G500 that was converted a while back managed to pull it off but I think because the G is a solid axle makes it much more doable.

The price of £19,995 ($25,697) is fair I suppose but it is nearly impossible to value something like this. Would this be fun to run around in? Sure. Is it $26,000 worth of fun? Eh, I don’t know. I’m betting there isn’t going to be a ton of money made on this car, if any, but whoever buys it better have some place to park it as well as never think about trying to drive it into London without getting stuck.

2002 Mercedes-Benz SL600 Silver Arrow with 5,400 Miles

The past few weeks I’ve come across a few Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrows that have garnered some attention. This car in Florida ended up selling for $16,900 and this car in Atlanta looks like it is still for sale. Today, I came across one of the 100 SL600 Silver Arrows that were made for the US market. The SL600s differed from the SL500s in that they didn’t receive the two-tone white interior but it did get the very pricey panoramic glass hardtop as standard. You also got a cool metal briefcase with some goodies inside of it that matches the car. Of course, you paid for all that at nearly $140,000 in 2002. Today, I have found one of these SL600 Silver Arrows for sale in Texas with just 5,400 miles. The price? Well, if we are on planet earth, this price is somewhere on Neptune. Seriously, I spit water on monitor when I saw this number and I wasn’t even drinking anything at the time. It is just that crazy.

First, looks take a quick glance at this car before we get to the giant whale in the room. This car has only 5,400 miles and should be perfect, right? Well, cosmetically it does look that. Everything looks new and it even has that 2000s era briefcase with all the literature in it. Mechanically? Take a look at the photo of the gauge cluster with the car running. It sure looks like the BAS/ESP and ABS lights are both shining bright to me. Is this a problem on a normal used car from 2002? Not really. An inconvenience for sure, but it can be fixed without much issue. This car? Totally unacceptable. Why? Because of the seller’s asking price.

$109,990. That is what this dealer thinks car is worth. I don’t know how and I don’t know why. There is zero evidence or prior sales that suggest this is even close to a six-figure car. Regular late-model V12 cars with under 35,000 miles are only bringing prices in the mid-$20,000 in auction settings. Does the Silver Arrow package bring another $80,000 in value? I don’t think so. I can’t imagine there are any people out there with $100,000 in their pocket looking to ”invest” in a car that thinks this one would be a good idea. You could roll this car across the stage at Gooding & Company or RM Sotheby’s with two guys with British accents going on about how special it is and no one in the crowd is going to think this is a $100,000 car, no matter how drunk they are.

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL60 AMG

I know everyone might be getting just a little sick of all the silver R129 Mercedes-Benz models I’ve been covering as of late, but I promise this one is worth it. This is a 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL60 AMG up for sale just outside of London. The backstory on the SL60 AMG is a little murky but I’m going to try to explain it the best I can. These cars were officially sold through Mercedes as a SL60 from 1993 to 1998, meaning when you run the VIN it comes back as a SL60 and not just as SL500s that were converted after the fact like we see a lot of times. There wasn’t much fanfare or marketing for these; they made somewhere between 1000 and 1500 with all of them being sold anywhere but North America.

The modifications are what you might have guessed: the 5.0 liter M119 converted to a 6.0 liter that made a conservative 381 horsepower. The rest of the stuff depended on the year and what the AMG factory felt like putting in the car. I don’t have any explanation as to why some cars were sold with Xenon and some weren’t. The same went with the interior changes as some cars got AMG gauge clusters while some didn’t and some interiors were crazy colors but others were just standard R129 interiors from that year. I believe that all the cars, except the very early ones, received the two-piece AMG wheels in the staggered setup. Today’s car is one of the few right hand drive examples that were built and honestly priced pretty reasonable in the grand scheme of things.

The SL 60 AMG was the most numerous of these rare cars. Sold from 1993 to 1998, it used a 6.0 litres (5,956 cc) V8 engine producing 381 PS (280 kW; 376 bhp) at 5500 rpm.[12] AMG claimed a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) speed of 5.6 seconds. Its top speed was limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
Cat D registered in 2000 for minor damage immaculate condition

totally immaculate viewing stricltly by appointment only

This 1997 is an interesting example. It has the two-tone interior with the stitched dash but doesn’t have the AMG gauge cluster or Xenon lights. Like I mentioned, this might just be that this is what AMG felt like building on this car or someone could have ordered it like this. The rest of the car looks pretty good even with some wear on the seat bolster and the exterior doesn’t show any major damage. The black badges on the trunk lid aren’t exactly my taste but that can be fixed easily enough. Under the hood, both camshaft magnets looks awfully fresh compared to the rest of the surrounding metal so that is a good sign. Overall, this one looks like a winner and it sure doesn’t hurt that it is being sold by a Mercedes specialist shop either.

As you might guess, these pull a heavy premium over regular SL500s and even SL600s. The price of £24,999 ($32,172) is on the lower end of what I’ve seen these listed at around Europe. I think the right hand drive does make it a little tougher sell, but I honestly think this is reasonable. These early AMG cars are only going to continue to creep up in value and the basic cars like this one are going to continue to be popular. I think we are just starting to see the beginning of the R129 collector cars starting to get snatched up and cars like this one are going to be the first to be captured.

Wednesday Wheels: Speedline JDD Twin Tyres

I’m sure you’ve heard the old ”we aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel” in some useless meeting at one point in your life by a guy who is trying to justify his existence at your company when all everyone wants to do is just get back to work. Today, we have an example of someone not trying to reinvent the wheel, but rather slice it in half. Back in the 1980s, a guy named Jerry Juhan came up with the idea that two narrow tires would be much more useful in wet and sloppy conditions than one wider tire. So he put that theory into reality by literally putting two smaller tires on a single rim. He convinced wheel marker Speedline to build him a bunch of sets and went to UK tire manufacturer Avon to produce the tires. Did this work? Well, there probably is a reason why we all aren’t out there driving on eight skinny tires on our cars but I wouldn’t say it was a total failure. I think of it more as a never caught on type of deal. Naturally, a few sets of these wheels still bounce around the internet from time to time as a relic and this set up for sale in Hungary looks to be in decent shape with its original Avon TurboSpeed tires still mounted. They aren’t cheap by any means, but if you want to wow everyone at RADwood 2019, here is your shot.

1964 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman

There are few cars I geek out over more than the Mercedes-Benz 600 and all of its crazy variations. There is just something about the ”money is no object” philosophy with these cars and the seemingly endless options that were offered. One of those options was the factory Pullman body that turned this sedan into a limousine. Wildly popular with celebrities, industrialists and heads of state, these offered the best the automotive world had to offer with seating for six. Today’s car, a 1964 Pullman for sale in Germany, was built for and used by the largest industrial manufacturing company in Europe: Siemens AG.

Price: $429,500 negotiable

This 1964 four door Pullman looks to be fairly standard in terms of options with no really crazy modifications. No built in bar or center throne to be found in the back of this one. The only interesting thing is that the front seats are the amazing blue leather and the rear seats are a light velour. It does look like it has a center glass divider which makes sense given its original purpose of being a corporate car. Outside, the front fenders do have the flag pole bases which is a little odd if this car was ordered just for Siemens, but there is no backstory and this car could of been first used for something else. The rest of the car looks to be fairly well sorted with nothing out of place that I can see.

As you might have guessed, these are not inexpensive cars in respect to both purchase price and upkeep. The buy-in on this one is $430,000, which is about the norm for a nice Pullman that is ready to go. Problem is with these Pullmans is that they are several hundred thousand dollars and require a ridiculous amount of care just to let them sit in your collection. I’ve said this many times before, there is no faking owning a 600. You have to be ready to drop several thousands of dollars even for minor stuff and tens of thousands for any kind of major servicing. Is this one worth that kind of cash? I really don’t think so. Does it mean I love it any less? Nope.

1999 Mercedes-Benz ML320

”Conceived in Germany, Born in America.” That was one of the tag lines used for the Mercedes-Benz W163 ML-Class when it was riding the new wave of luxury SUVs that roamed the earth back in the late 90s. Thanks to a $250 million subsidy package from the state of Alabama, the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) production plant had the honor of producing the W163 starting in February of 1997 with sales beginning later that year in September. How were they received? Well, in addition to being nicknamed the ”Bama-Benz”, you also had less flattering names like ”The Alabama trash can.” Truth be told, the majority of the people who bought these new could care less about things like quality and reliability because they all looked and acted like the mother from the movie American Beauty. The fit and finish were just average and the interiors would make the designers of Mercedes-Benz interiors in the 60s and 70s sob tears into their Weihenstephaners. Nevertheless, Mercedes sold a boat load of these things because the grille star was big enough to be seen from your neighbor’s house across the street.

Today, the first-generation ML chugs along with battle scars and so much rust you think it was intentional, like when the few in the Volkswagen crowd started doing it for scene points. No one actually seeks out and wants to buy a W163 now, especially the early ones with the two-toned body cladding, given how cheap other used luxury SUVs have become over the years. Although today I ran across a survivor that seemed spared from all the upper-middle class abuse a luxury SUV can take and actually is quite endearing in a strange sort of way. This 1999 ML320 up for sale  outside of Philadelphia has just 68,000 miles and isn’t a destroyed wasteland when you open the doors. Thing is, does anyone actually want to pay for this?

UP FOR OUR NEXT AUCTION IS THIS VERY NICE 1999 MERCEDES-BENZ ML320 SUV WITH LOW 67K MILES, 1 OWNER, NON SMOKER, ACCIDENT FREE, SUNROOF, LEATHER, CLEAN, AND PRICED TO SELL!!!! THIS CAR IS OVERALL IN GOOD CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT. THE EXTERIOR SHOWS NO MAJOR DENTS, DINGS OR SCRATCHES. THE INTERIOR ALSO SHOWS NO SIGNS OF ABUSE, (SEE ALL PICTURES FOR MORE DETAILS.) THE ENGINE RUNS STRONGAND THE TRANSMISSION IS SMOOTH. THE CAR WILL BE A STEAL, SO BID WITH CONFIDENCE!!!…..

This is one of the nicest early W163s I’ve seen in a long time. It is almost like a time capsule given how much abuse these things took and where they currently are at in their life cycle. I actually like the Tourmaline Green paint with gray lower cladding and the tiny 16 inch wheels in a strange sort of way. But this is what 1990s SUVs were. Conservative styling with no risks. Inside is the same story. Mushroom leather everywhere with a generous amount of fake wood and plastic. The manual climate control was a big letdown on this ML since almost all Mercedes cars had really nice automatic climate control systems by this time but again, this wasn’t going to stop anyone from buying this thing. I think Mercedes knew that and only once we started getting into the mid-2000s did Mercedes really take the styling and quality serious with the ML thanks to all the new competition in the luxury SUV market. Mercedes knew their market was for soccer practice and mall parking lots so they built the ML for all of that.

This ML320 is listed for $7,000 which seems just a little steep for me. Like I said, I don’t think anyone out there is fawning over a pre-facelift ML like they do Land Crusiers and Range Rover Classics. There is nothing impressive about this thing other than it is really clean. If you want a Mercedes, $7,000 buys you a lot of cars better than this thing. If you want a SUV, $7,000 gets you in the ball park of a lot of SUVs better than the ML. My thoughts? Fun to look at it, but you won’t see me ever putting down money for one of these. Unless it is chasing dinosaurs, of course.

I promise that this will be the last Mercedes-Benz R129 for a while. It’s just that I ran across this car and if you look at the title, you know it is something special. This is a 1990 500SL 6.0 AMG with just under 22,000 miles. The backstory on this car is that it was originally commissioned by the Jordanian Royal Family in 1990 but for whatever reason never made it there and ended up in Japan. This car was built as a normal 500SL before being transported to AMG’s facilities in Affalterbach for the full conversion. The biggest change to the car was of course the M119 being converted to a 6 liter which increased power to 380hp and 428ft-lb of torque. Those are respectable numbers even for today, never mind in 1990. Now it is up for sale in San Diego and ready for a new home.

Background:
AMG was founded as a racing engine forge in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development, Ltd.), by former Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Burgstall an der Murr, near Stuttgart. The letters “AMG” stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht’s birth Town). In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach, with the racing-engine development remaining at the old location in Burgstall. At this time Erhard Melcher ceased to be a partner, but continued to be an employee at the Burgstall location.

From 1986 to 1992, interest and the desirability of AMG tuned and prepared Mercedes Benz road cars bordered on the obsessive with demand and interest far exceeding the small firms capabilities to keep up. These facts were not overlooked by MB corporate personal and in 1993, Daimler-Benz AG and AMG signed a contract of cooperation, allowing AMG to leverage Daimler-Benz’s extensive dealer network and leading to commonly developed vehicles (the first one being the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG, in 1993). On 1 January 1999 DaimlerChrysler, as it was called between 1998 and 2007, acquired 51 percent of AMG shares, and AMG was renamed to Mercedes-AMG GmbH.[4] Racing engine development was divested and continues to exist in Burgstall under the name HWA (Aufrecht’s initials). On 1 January 2005 Aufrecht sold his remaining shares to DaimlerChrysler, and since then Mercedes-AMG GmbH has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG.

1986-1992 The Golden Years of AMG:
The release of the AMG Hammer sedan in 1986, based on the W124 E-Class, took AMG’s performance modifications for a fast midsized sedan to a new level. AMG made the world’s fastest passenger sedan at the time, nicknamed the Hammer, by squeezing Mercedes 5.6-litre V8 tuned by AMG to 360 hp into a midsized sedan. It was very aggressive for the era, with 32-valve cylinder heads and twin camshafts, and said to be faster than the Lamborghini Countach from 60 to 120 mph. Later models were even more powerful and introduced the 17-inch AMG Aero 1 Hammer wheels. 1986 was also the year Mercedes introduced the 560 M117 engine. This provided yet another opportunity for customers to order the largest AMG displacement available at the time, these 6.0-liter with 100mm bore SOHC or DOHC engines available for both the W126 coupe and sedans.

1990 AMG 560SEC 6.0 Wide-Body “Widenamebody”:
AMG received a series of orders from several prominent Japanese Private Museums and Collectors in the late 1980s. Shortly thereafter the first of a handful of fully re-engineered 560 SEC 6.0 “Wide-Body” Coupes fitted with the ultimate development of the already legendary M117/9 V-8 engines appeared in several Japanese motor shows. The engines were now fully developed to 6.0-liters with radically improved cam and ignition timing on the quad-cam, four-valve cylinder heads. Massive increases in bhp were achieved but more impressive was the fact that these machines now produced more than twice the torque and at 1/2 the rpm of the original MB Factory design. The result was un-heard of performance in an utterly reliable overall package that came with the same warranty as provided new by the MB Factory. Such performance and utter exclusivity came at a steep cost. Individual sale prices varied but they were now all in excess of $200,000 and even at that level, there were long wait lists and very few such examples were completed.

1991 Mercedes Benz 500SL AMG 6.0:
In the Spring of 1990, while production of the 560SE 6.0 “Wide Body” coupes was well underway, AMG began quietly taking special request orders for a R129 / 500SL Roadster based version with the same 6.0-liter, quad-cam, four-valve V8 found on the SEC wide-bodies. The handful of examples completed were done so with little fanfare or public announcement. AMG officially states that 12 examples were completed but most experts believe that number is far to low and that at least 30 were completed for the European market and another 25 for the Japanese market. There is a separate source that states upwards of 100 examples were eventually completed but most feel that number is too high. Unfortunately AMG’s pre-merger records are poorly organized and not alway accurate. None of these rare AMG variants initially came to the States through official channels but over the years a handful have been privately imported. Part of the reason for the low production numbers was a result of the shortened one-year only production run from September of 1990 to July 1991 of the model. Several were acquired by Prince Hakim and Prince Geoffrey (Sultan of Brunei.) At least one remained in Germany with a private enthusiast and several found their way to Middle Eastern and Persian Gulf State owners. In 1992, AMG stopped taking orders on the 500SL 6.0 to focus on the new SL60 and the all new class of 7.0 and 7.3-liter V12 models that would soon be released.

WDB1290661F017341 Individual History:
This particular 500SL AMG 6.0 was a unique special order, special request example that came from the Jordanian Royal Family in Amman, Jordan. The specific order originated with Mercedes Benz Commission No. 0 0 843 10114 which assigned assembly to their Bremen, Germany facility. The order came in the Summer of 1990 with completion taking place on September 2nd, 1990. The original Mercedes Factory Assembly Records provide fantastic detail on the special options incorporated into this vehicle’s assembly. No fewer than 27 individual option packages were identified on the original assembly sheets. (A complete listing of these can be found above as well as on the attached assembly summary sheets.)

Less than two-weeks later, this vehicle was delivered under a “Tourist Delivery Package) by overland transportation to AMG’s facilities in Affalterbach, Germany for conversion to AMG 6.0 specifications. These modifications included increasing the bore and stroke with special AMG Rods, pistons and hardened steel crankshaft which increased displacement from the stock 5.0-liters to 5,955cc (6.0-liters.) The modifications increased engine output to an astounding 380BHP and 428ft-lb at just 3,750rpm! Additional modifications took place to the suspension, interior and body work. Completion of the work at AMG was finished by the end of September, 1990. For unknown reasons, the original order from Amman, Jordan was cancelled and the vehicle instead remained at AMG until finally being sold to a private Japanese museum collection. Shortly after arrival on November 28th, 1992, it was road-registered on new Japanese plates “33 5417.” There were several changes of ownership over the next 26 years between two additional museum collections and several dealers before this rare AMG was purchased by our company in July of 2018. The original Japanese road-registration and DMV extra documents fo this vehicle have been preserved. They are an absolute treasure as they confirm engine displacement for the vehicle was 6.0-liters instead of the standard 5.0-liters. It remains the only example we have encountered so far with documentary evidence of this sort.

WDB1290661F017341 Today:
This completely accident and rust free AMG has just had complete service and safety checks performed. Even the tires were replaced and all the vehicle is “turn-key” ready for any manner of enthusiastic use. This is an all matching numbers example with full documented history from new. Please contact me for additional assistance with the purchase of this vehicle.

The seller does a really excellent job of telling the story on this car and it probably has one of the more comprehensive backgrounds of these pre-merger AMG cars that I’ve run across. As for the car itself, it looks every bit the part of a prime example and surely looks like it has just 22,000 miles. The exterior looks great and the extra wood that AMG added on the doors really sets the car off. None of it is faded and still has that deep shine that the burl wood on these cars originally had when new. I’m a little disapointed there are no shots of the engine since they took a ton of photos of everything else, but I’ll assume it is as clean as everything else on this car.

The price? Well, there is no price listed but I assume it is not cheap at all. This same dealer also has a Gullwing, Bugatti EB110 GT and LaFerrari for sale, so dabbling in inexpensive cars probably isn’t their forte. If I had to take a guess, I would bet at least $75,000, if not more. This is one of the best R129s, let alone pre-merger AMGs, I’ve seen in a while. I’d wager that whatever the price is, it probably is worth it.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GT

One of the things that always intrigues me is how one set of cars, usually a specific model or family of models, hits an arbitrary point in its depreciation and just sort of stays around that number as long as there aren’t any extraordinary circumstances around a specific car like accident history or a super high amount of miles. That was a really long sentence, but stay with me here. What I always like to look is how cars end up being the price that they are on the used market. The overwhelming majority of cars I feature here don’t really follow the rules of normal depreciation because they are often super niche models or cars that are so old that they are actually on their back up in terms of value. Other times this happens if the car is really limited production and just doesn’t register on the radar of 99% of the general car buying public. Today’s car, a Mercedes-AMG GT, falls into that category.

The AMG GT, along with the GT S, GT R, GT C and up coming GT 4-Door Coupe, aren’t built on a normal pedestrian production model and then shipped to AMG for them to do their thing with. The C190 was built to be an AMG car since day one and might be on track to have their values stay relativity stable if history repeats itself from the other cars that were exclusively born as AMGs. The only real example we have of this is the SLS AMG that seems to have settled around $150,000 for the Gullwing version and $125,000 for the Roadster. The prices only go up from there once you talk about ultra-low mileage examples and the endless number of special editions they made of them. Mercedes doesn’t have a replacement planned for it and calling this car, the C190, a successor of it is a stretch at best. So what do we make of AMG GT prices as they sit right now? Time to buy or still more room for a drop?

Unique that holds 2 sets of golf clubs or all your ladys luggage and get AWAY!!! Immaculate condition. Like-new. Save $50,000 off original price. (Hottest car on the road from a woman’s perspective. )

The 2017 up for sale in Savannah, Georgia is exactly what your typical used AMG GT is going to be on the market right now. An average amount of miles for the year and generally in like-new condition. The seller’s description is one of the odder things I’ve seen to sell a car like this and you can probably guess why he bought this car and probably why he is selling it too. I assume the MSRP was in the $115,000-120,000 range so there was some depreciation when he drove it off the lot unlike the Porsche GT cars right now and that is to be expected. No one is begging a Mercedes dealer to buy one of these cars as production of them isn’t exactly limited, but it isn’t like your local Mercedes dealer has two dozen of them sitting on their lot covered in snow.

So the big question is, where do values go with these? Do I think they are going to stay at the price as time and miles go up? Probably not. Are you going to be able to buy one of these for $34,000 soon? Don’t bet on it. I think the best example we might have to follow is actually the Nissan GT-R. They made a bunch of them but they were still relatively rare in the grand scheme of things. Those have settled at a floor of around $60,000 for a well-loved version with some even hitting $50,000 that have a bunch of miles and modifications. It wouldn’t surprise me to the GT follow the same path with the GT S staying a little higher and the Cabriolet cars staying above that level. I’m curious to find out, that is for sure.

2005 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG

Now that I’ve exhausted all of the nice Mercedes-Benz R129s currently on the market, I wanted to wander over to the R230 to see how things are going with the first SL with a folding hard top. The R230 was a giant leap forward in terms of styling and technology compared to the R129 as now the normally boxy and square roadster suddenly didn’t have a flat edge on the entire car. It was what needed to be done to keep the car relevant in the new millennium with the legacy buyers coming back as well as capture the hearts of all the new money buyers that wanted a sleek roadster that didn’t feel like an old man or woman’s car that was driven to the country club on a Sunday morning to play golf. It is tough to stay that Mercedes didn’t succeed in that as even now that the R230 is 17 years-old, it still doesn’t look or feel that age. Sure, some of the tech is dated, but getting in of these cars doesn’t scream ”this car can legally buy cigarettes next year” old.

Of course, with the introduction of the SL500 and V12 SL600 in the R230, Mercedes stepped up their game in the US market by giving customers the SL55 AMG that was a hit as soon as they landed on dealer lots. A 0-60 time in 4.4 seconds thanks to 493 horsepower and 520 lb⋅ft of torque, the SL55 wore the crowd of the fastest automatic transmission car in the world for a short time before the big brother SLR came on to the scene in 2003. The SL55 continued to be the model of choice over the more expensive V12 SL600 until it was replaced by the SL63 in 2008. The SL65 AMG joined the lineup in 2005 with its twin-turbocharged V12 making an insane 604 horsepower and 738 lb⋅ft of torque, but also carried a price tag starting at $185,000. Needless to say, the SL55 remained the best bang for the buck at a still very expensive $115,000, but was a bargain compared to competitors Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin’s DB7 Volante in terms of both purchase price and cost of running. Today, the SL55 sits in that no man’s land of not old enough to be considered a classic and not modern enough to be considered by people who want to be impressed by a bunch of tech. Add in the fact that the running costs can scare some people off, a Corvette seems like a much better buy for the convertible crowd who take Sunday cruises to the Daily Queen. What does that mean for prices on these beasts? Very good things if you are willing to commit to owning one. At least this example up for sale in North Carolina proves that.

This 2005 checks-in with just over 92,000 miles and if you are looking mint car, as the kids say, ”this ain’t it, chief’.’ This car has some scuffs on the exterior and a cheap aftermarket grille but the interior really shows its flaws. The shift knob has some nasty stains on it, some leather is starting to sag on the center console tunnel, there is a strange stain where something was dripping in the driver’s side foot well where your knee would sit and basically everything else that you touch with your hands has many years of dirt on it. The wear on the driver’s side is average for this age with some heavy creasing and the trunk looks like it has it’s fair share of spills over the years. Other than that, it doesn’t look all that bad. Mechanically, the selling dealer says nothing about it and while the M113K is generally pretty reliable if stay on top of maintenance, the Active Body Control system and very complicated top scare me the most with these cars. You really need to have someone with factory diagnostic software to work on these cars as they aren’t as easy to DIY as the R129 without it. Will this stuff put you into bankruptcy? No, not really. Does it cost more than an average convertible to fix? Very much so. Would I be scared of owning on these? No. Would it be my 3rd or 4th vehicle that is purely for pleasure? Surely yes.

Now lets talk about price. These early SL55s are probably at the point where they are going to be as cheap as they’ll ever be. Really clean ones with low miles are in the $20,000-30,000 range and ones that aren’t perfect, like this one, are in the teens. This one priced at $15,500 is a good buy in my eyes. You are buying a ton of car for that price that still has a bunch of life left in it. Again, I can’t stress this enough, do not even consider this car unless you have an independent Mercedes shop that knows these cars and you also can be without it for days at a time. If you want a SL55, find a clean one, get a pre-purchase inspection and set aside a small chunk of change for maintenance every year and you’ll be fine. Just don’t put a tacky grille on it like this one. It looks horrible.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300CE Sportline

If you want to get into the Mercedes-Benz W124 world but don’t want to pay the big prices that the 500E/E500 commands, there are a few other options if you need that little extra bit over a standard offerings. Mercedes did just that with the Sportline option on the coupes, sedans and even the estate cars, and it gave you a more that just some cool little badges. While you didn’t get a horsepower bump, you did get a bunch of revised suspension components, wider wheels and tires, a quicker ratio steering box and a smaller steering wheel. Worth it? Probably so. Visually, you can’t really tell a Sportline car from a regular W124 outside of those little badges, so when hunting for these cars you do really need to have a keen eye when searching through the mass of W124s for sale at any time. Thankfully, people are starting to recognize these cars are more desirable to some and thus listing them as Sportline cars, like today’s car – a 1993 300CE with just 39,000 miles. This car is actually made for the Japanese market but somehow is now for sale outside of Chicago. Problem is, this dealer is asking a ton of money for the honor of that badge. How much? Well, you’re well into 500E asks here:

This is as clear a car as you could ask for with 28,000 miles from Japan. Everything looks very nice from what I can see including the M104 under the hood. The aftermarket headunit is a little off-putting but it can be fixed in short order. I’m a little surprised to see this car in the US from Japan and even more surprised the selling dealer doesn’t mention this. One thing to note in general is that 1993 is the only year that has the pre-facelift body but also has the updated M104. What is really interesting about this car is because it is a Japanese-spec version, it comes with the 722.5 5-speed automatic and not the 722.3 4-speed that all the North American cars had in 1993. Does that mean this is the ultimate C124? If you like the pre-facelift body, it is tough to argue against.

Now lets talk about price. The dealer wants $29,000 for this car. I know W124 Coupes are getting really desirable of late and this is without a doubt a special car with low miles, but $29,000 really is 500E money. I’m sorry, but I’m taking the 500E every time over a car like this for this price. This has to be one of the more expensive, if not the most expensive, C124s out there and even really nice E320 Cabriolets will sell for less money than this. I get this dealer is try to hit a home run with this car, but at least try to be reasonable with the asking price. Everyone feels better that way.

2004 Mercedes-Benz ML500

A few weeks ago I dug into the first generation Mercedes-Benz ML and explained while it was a hit when it came to sales, the actual nuts and bolts of the vehicle were less than impressive. A lot of you chimed in the comments section and shared your experiences with them and I can’t say I was all that surprised at what I saw. Naturally, as the years went on and Mercedes gave a face lift to the old Alabama trash can, things got a little better. Mercedes pretty much had to as every other luxury automaker was going full swing into the SUV market including Lexus with its RX300 in 1999, BMW with its X5 in 2000 and Porsche coming in heavy with the Cayenne in 2004. Suddenly the fight for all those upper-middle class dollars got really intense to see who could out do each other and still have to fend off the old guard upscale SUVs from Land Rover and the Toyota/Lexus Land Cruiser/LX.

As the years went on, Mercedes somehow had the space to add not one, not two, but three V8s under the hood of the W163. The M113 4.2, 5.0 and 5.4 liters were all borrowed from other Mercedes cars in the lineup, with the 5.4 coming from AMG. Today’s ML up for sale in San Diego I wanted to look at features the 5.0 liter badged at the ML500. Naturally, there are a bunch of these ML500s out there for sale and I didn’t want to pick any average one because they aren’t all that interesting and you can probably guess the condition they are in. This one however has just 57,000 miles and features the rare Designo interior option that I always love checking out. But much like the very low mile and clean ML320 from weeks ago, are you willing to pay the above average price for it just because it is clean?

2004 Mercedes-Benz ML500 4Matic | Desert Sand Metallic on Java/Borneo Designo Interior | 57,000 miles

For sale by owner 2004 Mercedes-Benz ML500. This vehicle is very clean and features some of the best options available on the M-Class. In addition, this is a very low-mileage ML500, which is very rare to find.

The exterior, interior, and mechanical condition are all very good. The car doesn’t have any rust, has very nice paint, and features special five-spoke alloy wheels in very good condition.

The interior is spotless and features the original leather-trimmed Designo floor mats. All of the leather on the seats is very supple, the wood trim isn’t faded at all, and the headlight is in excellent condition. A factory navigation stereo system with Bose sound is fitted. Included are the navigation discs.

Mechanically, there are no warning lights on, the A/C works great, the car shifts effortlessly, and the engine makes excellent power. The ML500 received much better brakes than the standard ML320 and ML350, too.

One of the most luxurious options this vehicle has is the Designo interior which includes:
– Java interior with Designo two-tone Java/Borneo Nappa leather on seats, doors, steering wheel, shift
knob and shift gate trim.
– Natural poplar wood trim on doors, console and shift gate.
– Java floor mats with leather trim.

In addition to the Designo interior, this particular model is heavily optioned with the following packages:

– Sunroof Package – power tilt sliding tinted glass sunroof. Power rear quarter vent windows.
– ML500 comfort package – Memory seats, power folding mirrors, rain sensor
– Lighting Package – Xenon lights, headlight washers, flash to pass feature
– Bose Audiopilot sound system with CD-Changer
– Heated seats
– Navigation system

This vehicle recently had an oil change, alignment, four new Michelin tires fitted, air filter replaced, rear brakes replaced, and new windshield wipers. It is ready to drive anywhere.

Don’t miss your chance to own one of the best models of the W163 generation, a 2004 ML500!

Unlike the Jade Green Porsche 911 from last week, this ML is beige on beige on beige. The two-tone Designo interior helps break up the monotony off all the similar colors, but don’t come into this thing looking to be excited from the color palette. Of course, Mercedes had to spice up the name and call the paint ”Travertine Beige” and the leather is ”Borneo”, but you can call it whatever dull name you have for it. The one saving grace is that the wood is the unique Pappel which you don’t see all that often. The overall condition of this W163 is really clean and supports the 57,000 miles. I’m sure being in San Diego for its entire life helped keep it this way, but it does take some effort to keep a ML looking this nice.

Like the 1999 from a few weeks ago, an example this clean with these miles does carry a premium asking price compared to the rest of the market. $12,000 is a lot of money for a 15 year-old ML, so whoever wants to pony up the cash for this has to really love this thing. Would I pay that? No way. I’ll gladly pay $5,000 for an example with 155,000 miles and a cigarette burn on the floor mat to have the same experience this one gives me. But for someone out there who dreams of a really nice ML, if there is such a person, this one is tough to beat.

1988 Mercedes-Benz 300CE with 60 miles

$

It seems like every so often a car pops up that somehow has completely fallen off everyone’s radar – including the owner. Usually it is some story about how they were bought for a business but shut down suddenly and everything was left as-is, or how an owner bought the car and suddenly passed leaving the car sit while the family had other things to deal with. Sometimes you might hear about how someone bought a car and stashed it away thinking it’ll be worth big money sometime in the future. As a result, most of these cars have but a few thousand miles – maybe somewhere in the hundreds – but I can’t recall seeing too many cars with this few miles.

This 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300CE up for sale in Poland has just 98 kilometers on the odometer. For those who live their lives in miles, that is roughly 60. That’s it. How did this happen? I don’t know. The seller says that this car was originally sold in Sweden where it sat in a barn for the past 30 years before somehow ending up in Poland. It has never been washed and everything is included from when it left the dealer’s lot. Problem is, this C124 isn’t exactly a time capsule as you might have noticed by the photo. On second thought, it maybe is a time capsule, only one of those that wasn’t sealed correctly and when they dig it up to open it, everything inside is ruined from water damage. Yes, that’s more like it.

Unique opportunity to buy this Mercedes Benz 300 CE with unbelievably low mileage of 98 kilometres (60 miles). The car was brought from Sweden, fully operational, with the steering wheel on left-hand side. At the moment, the car is kept in Poland. It is a truly museum/exhibitory model. It has been kept in a barn for the last 30 years. While kept in the barn, water was dripping onto the bonnet of the car and it resulted in limescale build up. Descaling is an uncomplicated process, yet it has to be done by a specialist using special chemical products (I haven’t tried to remove it myself). The car has never been washed from the day of purchase. I would also like to add, that the barn this car has been kept in is very well ventilated which provided best conditions for this car to be kept in. This car requires minimum work and effort to bring it back to the perfect condition. I have the name and address of the company this car was purchased from, as well as all the paperwork, a set of keys, vehicle service book and vehicle manual, in general all the paperwork you would get when buying a new car from a car salon. All the paperwork is intact, in impeccable state. I am able to present the car’s history from the moment of purchase in 1988 until today, all supported with appropriate documents. There has only been 141 498 copies of this model of the care manufactured. Everything is genuine and in perfect condition. A real treat for car collectors. It is probably the only, 100 per cent original, intact model of this car with such low mileage of 98 km. I am open to offers. If you are interested, please contact me at 00447724290468 (uk number) or dawid909-84@o2.pl . If I don’t answer, please send me a text message. I look forward to hearing from you.

I don’t know what to make of this one. The seller says that water was dripping on the hood, which I can understand, but the rest of this car is really rough for just 60 miles. If it hasn’t moved in 30 years, it doesn’t explain why the core support is dented and rusted. It looks like water was dripping over the entire car, just not the hood, because the deck lid is really oxidized along with the rear glass. You can see in the one photo that the edge of the trunk has started to rust pretty well too. Maybe this barn didn’t have a roof? Sadly, the interior hasn’t fared much better. You can see that mold has started to grow everywhere and it is probably at the level where the entire interior needs to be removed and cleaned. Giant spores on the seat belts are present in some photos which isn’t a good sign. I came in thinking this was going to be a time capsule, but in reality it is worse off than a car with 300,000 miles.

The seller is asking $40,000, which I suppose I can’t blame him for. There likely isn’t another W124 out there with these kind of miles that isn’t in the Mercedes museum, but the problem is that this car needs a ton of work. Which has me asking, is it even worth it? Most of the amazement and perceived value from these time capsule cars is their ”lost in time” condition and the feeling of what a new example was from 30 years ago. But when the car looks like any other beat up example, does anyone even care? You need to disassemble most of this interior and it does need body work as well as a bunch of mechanical stuff, so that originality is all out the window. This isn’t some rare Ferrari that will be worth millions either. This is a W124 coupe that made a lot of. For my money, give me another example with slightly more miles but with much better care. Those examples are still out there for a better price.

2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, depending on how you look at it, Mercedes-Benz has only graced the United States market with one AMG estate car. Thankfully, it was more than one generation starting with the S211 E-Class and continuing with the S212 and now up to the current S213. Of course, we got AMGs in every SUV, including a R-Class for whatever reason, but when it comes to regular estate cars, the E-Class was it. No C-Class estates, no CLA shooting brakes and certainly no CLS shooting brakes either. Even with the multiple generations of E wagon AMGs, good luck finding one for a reasonable price as even the most desolate ones still bring close to $30,000.

Today, I came across a really nice W204 C63 AMG Estate up for sale at one of my favorite dealers in Europe that is as clean as all the other cars I feature from them. This 2009 painted in Palladium Silver Metallic has all the right lines and curves to keep that aggressive AMG stance and have future classic written all over it. I just wish they brought them stateside.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate at Auto Leitner

Year: 2009
Model: C63 AMG Estate
VIN: N/A
Engine: 6.2 liter V8
Transmission: 7-speed automatic
Mileage: 56,000 km (34,796 mi)
Price: €46,500 ($53,133 Today)

Almost as good as new this C63 AMG Estate with original 56.259 km and then I do not say a word too much; what a spotless state! Equipped with the amazing color 792U Palladium silver metallic. This Mercedes two years ago we imported by about 39,000 km and sold to a real enthusiast who the AMG sublime has been maintained and cherished ….

Mercedes and AMG didn’t make a ton of these estates, roughly the same number of E-Class wagons, so they are far rarer than the sedan or even the coupe. Like mentioned, this car is nearly perfect, both inside and out, and I can find any flaws with it. The two-tone seats with checked cloth inserts is another option that the North American cars didn’t have and I just think they look awesome. The W204 C63 has some of the most aggressive side bolsters in any Mercedes, so it cool to see them contrasted with something other than matching leather. The rest of the car? Perfect. You couldn’t ask for anything more from this one.

The price of about $54,000 when converted to US dollars is about where I expected this car given its condition and miles. These are very rare and obviously in high demand just like the E-Class wagons, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that it carries a premium price over sedans and coupes. Yes, you can find slightly less expensive ones floating around Europe for sale, but they likely aren’t going to be as nice as this one now that they are hitting over 10 years-old. This is a real find that is sure to be a keeper now and into the future.

1997 Porsche Boxster with 8,900 miles

A few weeks I took a look at one of the most jarring Porsche interiors I have run across with a 1999 911 up for sale in San Diego. It wasn’t so much that the Jade Green was all that ugly, but rather the Burl Wood that was plastered everywhere clashed so much with the Jade and the rest of the interior. Add in the fact that the car is automatic, has 166,000 miles and isn’t priced all that well, you can probably guess what it is still for sale. Most of you in the comments seemed to agree with my thoughts on that 996 as well judging by the reaction that it got. Although one commenter (Thanks JonnyA) passed along another late ’90s Porsche with a green interior that still has loads of green leather, but isn’t nearly as gaudy or off-putting. This 1997 Boxster up for sale outside of Dallas features Nephrite Green leather and even better, has just 8,900 miles. Is this a better option if you still want an inexpensive Porsche with a wild interior?

Yes this is a 1 Owner Porsche with less than 9K Miles. Let me repeat 1 Owner with under 9K Miles! Show Room Condition. This is just an amazing car! This Car NEEDS NOTHING. This car comes with a TEXAS clean title!!! Power top works great and we have so many goodies to go with it (Front bra, mirror cover, car cover, front dash cover, both keys, owners manual mats etc).

Jumping straight into the interior, you can see that painted silver plastic looks much better than the faux wood from the 996. Nephrite Green looks like a slightly lighter shade of green than Jade, so I don’t think it smacks you in the face quite as hard when you first look at it. The 8,872 miles probably has a lot do with how pleasant the car looks and I’m curious if I’d still look at it this way if it had 118,872 miles given the way the first generation Boxsters have held up. The rest of the car looks just about perfect and it even has a bunch of other cool like things like the factory front bra and mirror covers as well as a dash cover.

Prices for these early 986s are probably at rock bottom and I don’t see them really going anywhere anytime soon. They are a cheap way to get your hair blown around and that is about it. Seems crazy that the earliest Boxsters are over 20 years-old now and now new Boxsters are selling for over $100,000 given Porsches propensity to charge you air in the tires. I would say $15,000 is fair for this example given the miles and a decent pre-facelift is going to be around that $10,000 mark and you could maybe hope for these to creep up in value over the years. If you are someone who likes first generation Boxsters, this one would be tough to beat all things considered.
