2006 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Estate

My never-ending quest for a replacement for my dying Land Rover for a winter vehicle (it is still ongoing) saw me look at a W210 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate 4Matic and then went back a generation to look at a W124 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate. It seems like most preferred the W124 and I can’t say I disagree, but I thought it might be interesting to head the other direction and look at a W211 E350 4Matic Estate. Mercedes made the W211 a little softer, a little sleeker and the biggest change was going from the M112 V6 to a M272 V6. The M272 was based on the M112 but with a bunch of little upgrades like continuous variable valve timing, the elimination of a mechanical thermostat and a dual variable-length intake manifold. Everything that sounds great on paper, but these early M272s had one major flaw that basically turns vehicles radioactive and unfortunately this wagon suffers from that. Of course I am talking about the dreaded balance shaft gears.

For sale we have a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E350. This vehicle has the reliable 3.5L 6 Cylinder motor that starts right up with no issues at all. The exterior is clean with some scuffs you may see. The interior is very clean and has a lot of power options. The tires on this car are in good condition . The automatic transmission shifts into gears perfect with no delay. Come on down and take this baby home today !! Call 203-437-7088

I’ve highlighted this problem a while back but it is always good to swing back around for those who haven’t heard about it before. The short of it is that the balance shaft gears inside engine wear our prematurely and basically wreak havoc on the timing chain system. It was such a problem that private individuals sued Mercedes for this. Ultimately the courts ruled that Mercedes wasn’t responsible since almost all the failures happened outside the warranty period even though Mercedes knew about this problem and made the proper fixes in the later M272 engines. The way to check if you engine is potentially plagued is to check the serial number and see if it is below the number 30 468993. The estate has engine number 30 067907 so it a very early example because after all it is a 2006. Now this W211 has almost 128,000 miles so either it hasn’t happened yet or it was one of the cars that was maybe replaced with the updated parts. No way to really know that unless you somehow have the service records or have access to an internal vehicle master inquiry from Mercedes. Don’t you just love these cars?

This looks like a random used car dealer that is selling this wagon so I’d be willing to bet they have no idea about this issue and just want this thing sold for the most amount of money possible. Right now these usually hover around $8,000-10,000 and I would expect that for this one. It looks is good shape with no major issues from what I can see so I would bet that a lot of people have their eye on in and I can’t really blame them. If this had the fixed parts then it is a really useful estate for not a lot of money. Sadly, the reality of it is that it’s just another ticking time bomb that will level you with a $5,000 repair bill that you will never seem coming.

Updated 12/6/18: It looks like this 560SEC we looked at in June is still for sale with an even more attractive of price of $9,990. Check it out here.

About a month ago I checked out a really nice and really gold 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC. That was a European-spec car with all the nice upgrades over the North American-spec’d cars at the time but as you might have guessed, carried a hefty price tag at $35,000. Today, we have another C126 that wasn’t originally destined for American in a 1990 560SEC. This car comes to California from Japan in a non-factory paint color and some other interesting touches. The price? Probably not as high as you might guess.

The big thing with the European 560SECs is the power bump you get from the M117 that put out around 300 horsepower compared to the 238 that you would get from a North American car. Torque was also increased from 287 to 333. You also get a different rear end, some wider tires, the smaller bumpers and the much improved headlights. There are some other small details, but a SEC like this one is regarded at the ”one to get” if you had to pick from its entire production run. As for this specific car, I’m a little down on its condition. The two-tone paint is a little odd and judging by the giant pieces that are starting to crack away, it hasn’t aged very well. Inside, some wood is starting to crack and there are some other flaws like the holes where someone probably drilled for a cellphone mount years ago and was then removed. Under the hood, the mighty M117 looks clean enough for 140,000 miles but the coolant expansion tank that is almost filled to the brim is a little odd.

I’d say this car is priced fairly at $16,000. If this was a perfect example with a third of the miles, you could probably double that price and I wouldn’t balk at it. I think if you wanted to really sort this car out to really nice condition, you are going to spend many thousands of dollars but I can’t say it would be money wasted. C126 values have been holding strong for the past few years and I don’t really see them getting any cheaper in the near future. This 560SEC is a great starting point with a decent buy-in price if you wanted a car you could drive and really dial-in at the same.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 220CE

Last week I looked at a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe that had a ton of potential, but I just couldn’t commit given its long list of aftermarket parts that weren’t very flattering in my eyes. From the looks of it, the readers felt the same way judging by the comments that echoed my points. Today, I found another W124 Coupe that not only is stock (outside of a Blaupunkt headunit), but is actually one of the nicest C124s I’ve ever come across. This 1993 220CE up for sale in the Netherlands is a model that was never sold in North America and is quite unique thanks to a few options. This 220CE is powered by the M111 inline-four that is also found in the W202 C220, a car we do have in North America, and makes a surprising 150 horsepower for being as basic as it is. All this is nice, but the real reason I am here is because of the beautiful Malachite Green, both inside and out.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 220CE at Auto Leitner

Year: 1993
Model: 220CE
VIN: N/A
Engine: 2.2 liter inline-4
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: 85,101 km (52,879 mi)
Price: €13,500 ($15,300)

Unique! A rare tri-colore; 249 Malachite green metallic with 268 green leather and green dashboard. 3 times the same color! Also very special: demonstrably from the first Belgian owner until 2017. From early to 2017 by the same Mercedes dealer maintained. Original purchase note and a full stamped original service book. This concerns the 220 version that has been delivered very briefly as 220 CE. Original only 85.101 km and in excellent condition ….

Full disclosure, I love green cars, so needless to say I love this car. Malachite Green is one of my favorite Mercedes colors, but what I’m really smitten for is the green inside the car. The green dash that matches the green leather seats is so quintessential 1990s and the mint condition Zebrano wood makes it even better. I am not much for aftermarket headunits in any car, but the period-correct Blaupunkt gets a pass from me here. Heading back outside the car, the plastic hubcaps are a neat option that weren’t available on North American W124s and I think they look just fine for the style of what this car is. One thing to note is that this 220CE is wearing winter tires. A little odd for a car with only 53,000 miles and as flawless as this is, but the argument can always be made that winter tires are just as useful for cold temperatures as much as snow and ice, so maybe that is the case here.

The price of $15,300 doesn’t really raise an eyebrow from me considering how nice this car is and what this dealer usually has in stock. I featured a pair of 500Es back in February from this same place and they were just as nice as this car, if not better. Even though this is a pretty standard C124, the awesome color combo and condition has it primed to be a collectible that can still be driven time to time. Granted, pricey in the grand scheme of things for what this is, but not unexpected. I’m glad I got to check it out.

1984 Mercedes-Benz 280SL 5-Speed

For every Craiglist-special Mercedes-Benz R107 out there with its average condition and crazy price, there is one R107 that is actually worth the money. You wouldn’t believe the number of 450SLs and 380SLs I dig through day after day with phrases like ”Great condition” and ”A real peach” only to see they have tires on them from 1996 and the canvas top is full of mold. I chalk it up to nearly two-thirds of the 300,000 R/C107s built ending up in North America over the unheard of 18 year production run. Combine that with their durability and most people treating them like some sort of investment, and you now have a market flooded with R107s. As the baby boomers hit retirement and their three-bedroom ranch house has a for sale in the front yard, so does the SL in the garage. The overwheling majority of the time they are over priced (in my eyes) and there just aren’t many buyers out there for them. The W113 Pagoda is a much more attractive car and the R129 is a much more livable car with its modern amenities. You are left with the R107 right in the middle with its giant bumpers, four eye head lights and underwhelming performance numbers. However, there is a beacon of light for the R107. This car is none other than the 280SL 5-speed.

Rare Euro 5-Speed manual, one owner, original paint, original interior, MINT!

This 1984 280SL is very impressive from every angle, a true no excuses car. One owner only, European market Roadster drives amazingly showing its immaculate condition.

The Signal Red paint is all original.

Clan Carfax, VIN WDB1070421A013163

The suspension is tight and there is no play on the bushings and bearings, the steering wheel has no play and no clunckiness, typical of the R107 Mercedes.

The driving experience is incredible; the 2.8-liter twin cam engine is responsive with good torque and it is very well paired to the factory 5-Speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly and precisely. This car doesn’t feel nose heavy like the V8 US cars allowing it to corner nicely, even is spirited drives.

The engine bay shows how well this car has been taken care of, the plating, coating and rubber elements, as well as the stamps and stickers are all there.

This car has and shows 26K original miles with no doubt.

The interior is all original and in impressive condition for a 34-year-old car. The burl wood has a beautiful grain and a deep shine with no fading. The carpeting in the cabin and the luggage compartment looks unmolested as well as the spare tire.

The factory radio works and tunes to your favorite FM Stereo station. The power antenna works perfectly.

The Euro headlights, reflectors and bumpers show impeccably on the rust-free chassis with Eurospec ride height. Rust doesn’t know this car.

Except for the tires and the gasoline this car is 100% ORIGINAL, should be in a museum! A Time Machine to 1984!

The 280SL 5-speed is exactly what it says. The M110 2.8 liter inline-6 making around 185 horsepower mated to the 717 5-speed manual transmission. Everything you know about the heavy V8s with the lethargic 4-speed automatic in these cars is no more. A R107 that actually feels peppy and not like it has an elephant under the hood. Even better, since this is a European-spec car, it has the slim bumpers and proper headlights. As luck would have it, this example painted in Signal Red is nearly flawless. Everything shines factory fresh and I’m having a hard time seeing any major flaws or issues. The black interior with burl wood suits this car perfectly and the extremely clean Bundts finish the car off great. One more thing to note is the rear jump seats that are installed. It goes without saving that they aren’t meant for adults or really anyone with legs in general, but the fact they are present is an interesting tidbit.

Of course, you have to pay for all this perfection. The asking price of $39,500 is high, but considering I see these kind of prices for mint condition 560SLs, I can understand it. Give me this car over a 560SL any day and you will have a tough time convincing me that this won’t be the more collectible car as the years go on. The rarity of the European-spec 280SL along with the elusive 5-speed manual will always keep this one in demand, so I don’t see how you could lose in the long run if you did pony up for the nearly $40,000. If you really love the R107 and love rowing your own gears even more, this is the one to get.

2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

When it rains, it pours. For a vehicle that North American only saw 192 of, I have come across three W211 Mercedes-Benz E55 Estates for sale in less than three weeks. Last week it was a 2005 in The Hamptons that needed some help and the week before that it was an even rarer 2006 also in New York that was replaced by a Ferrari FF. Today, we have another 2005 that is up for sale in sunny Jacksonville, Florida that thankfully looks to be in prime shape. This S211 painted in Brilliant Silver Metallic checks in with 145,000 miles and thanks to a few little Mercedes software tricks, has some nice little features that I don’t see all that often.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate on eBay

Year: 2005
Model: E55 AMG Estate
VIN: WDBUH76J95A800203
Engine: 5.4 liter supercharged V8
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 145,100 mi
Price: No Reserve Auction

Mercedes E55 estate wagon being offered for sale.

1 of 192 imported to USA

All maintenance up to date, owned by MB Master service advisor.

Matching set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

Slightly lowered using SDS.

SBC hold feature activated (holds brake pedal at idle like newer MBs)

Xenons, heated and cooled seats, keyless go, third row option, sat radio, 6 disc changer, Bluetooth streaming, Mb phone system.

Call for more information 904.537.8006

Even with the 145,000 miles, I am not seeing anything that jumps at me that would cause concern. Granted, the information and any photos are pretty light on this one, but seeing as the owner is a Mercedes dealer service advisor, I trust that there are no ghosts in the closet. Because the owner is awfully close with dealership technicians, he used the Mercedes Star Diagnosis System (SDS) to lower the car slightly via the Airmatic suspension. The owner also utilized the SDS to add the ”auto hold” feature on the brakes. I didn’t even know this was possible on the W211, but since it does have the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system, I guess it makes sense. Inside the car, everything looks as it should and nothing jumps out at me.

It looks like the owner is running this auction at no reserve and I have to admit, that is pretty brave of him. Selling high horsepower, niche cars in the dead of winter right before Christmas probably isn’t great timing if you want to most potential buyers possible in an auction setting. The $18,900 starting price is more than fair and it hasn’t gone unnoticed judging by the 20 or so watchers on it already. If I had to guess, anywhere north of $25,000 would probably be ideal for the seller and a fair price for the buyer. If someone manages to sang this in the low $20,000 range, I’d say they got a steal.

1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL with 1UZ swap

Nearly six months later, this 190SL with the crazy IUZ-FE swap is still for sale with a new price of $169,000. If you are keeping score at home, that is $10,000 more than what it was previously listed at. Bold strategy.

File this one under the category of something you don’t see every day … or ever. I know you are probably wondering why I am looking at another 190SL when I just recently featured one, but as you can judge by the title, this isn’t your standard 190SL. Somehow, someway, this classic 1962 Mercedes roadster is powered by the 1UZ-FE 4.0-liter Lexus V8. Even more, it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. All of this work looks factory, as factory as a 1962 car with a Lexus V8 can look, and performs just as well. I’m still trying to wrap my head around this one and I imagine you are too.

Here is a 190SL that will have Gullwing Owners feeling a sense of envy! Featured at the world famous Rodeo Drive Concours 25th Anniversary Event on June 17, 2018. Pictures are from this event.

Red metallic convertible with a removable subtle Pearl White hardtop that compliments the red paint.

The only 190SL that can have bragging rights when parked beside a 300SL roadster or Gullwing. This is the best engineered, best performing Mercedes 190 SL in existence, one that performs significantly better than the iconic 300SL Gullwing and yet is more refined as well and yet is inexpensive to maintain and operate.

The Ultimate 190SL: A 190SL that’s actually fun to drive! 300 horsepower fuel injected aluminum Four Cam 32 valve V8. The most reliable 32 valve V8 motor in existence. A motor designed for racing CART/IRL. By comparison, the standard 190SL motor makes only ~100 hp. (Even an economy car like the Honda Fit makes 130 hp! 30 hp more than the standard 190SL)

This motor, the legendary 1UZ, considered by many to be the most reliable 32 valve V8 ever designed, can go 300,000 miles without needing an overhaul!

5 Speed overdrive gearbox. At 80 mph the standard four speed 190SL is turning nearly 5,000 rpms!

At 80 mph this 190SL is turning just over 3000 RPMs, nice and comfortable.

***UPDATING THE BRAKES. Currently in the process of having 325mm ventilated brake discs with 6 piston aluminum brake calipers designed for this 190SL. By comparison, all 190SL and the legendary million plus dollar 300SL Gullwing use drum brakes.***

Suspension upgrades include high performance front sway bar, aluminum adjustable front shocks and aluminum double adjustable rear shocks. This allows a fine tuning of the ride and performance and makes this car handle like a dream.

Also further improving the handling and braking are the upgraded wheels and tires, wheels custom made for this car, 3 piece wheels using original Mercedes components.

The original tires on the 190SL are puny 165mm wide, 13″ tires: Gullwing tires are 185 mm /70 15″

This Mercedes 190SL features 16″ wheels with 215mm tires, giving far better traction and braking than the 300SL thanks to a much larger contact patch! (Not to mention weighing hundreds of pounds less than the 300SL)

Just like the Gullwing, this 190SL features a Limited Slip differential to put the power to the wheels.

New unique custom yet classic Mercedes 3-piece wheels. (Original wheels are 13″ these are 16″) With new high performance 215mm B.F Goodrich performance tires.

Weighs just 2575 pounds! (A little over 2600 with hardtop on.) That’s about 600 pounds less than a carbon fiber McLaren! A 300SL roadster weighs ~3200 pounds, 600 pounds more than this 190SL.

The 300SL Gullwing and Roadster engines make nearly 100 hp less than this 190SL (~215hp compared to 300 hp for this 190SL)

This Mercedes 190SL goes 60 in ~4.6 seconds compared to 9 seconds for a Gullwing. As the 300SL Roadster weighs hundreds of pounds more than a Gullwing so its 0-60 mph is even slower. The 190SL 0-60 mph is nearly 14 seconds! By comparison, entry level economy cars like the Hyundai Accent and Honda Fit take just 8 seconds.

25 mpg on highway.

The steering was also upgraded from the old worm and roller to more responsive rack and pinion steering. The steering is power assisted which makes this car easy to drive at lows speeds and during parking maneuvers.

A new aluminum clutch master cylinder was installed making clutch operation comfortably light. A new clutch (disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing) was just installed.

To give you an idea as to how much these modifications cost, some years ago Mercedes and AMG took 11 300SL (Gullwings and Roadsters) and because they only made around 200 hp, they installed V8 engines in them. In fact, these were the very first cars to be jointly developed by Mercedes and AMG. The modifications to the 300SL cost $1,000,000 and this million dollars is in addition to the price of the car!

If you know about the 300SL and the 190SL you know the biggest problem with the 190SL is it is painfully slow. It also has dual carburetors that need adjusting to run properly. Yet it is beautifully and solidly built by Mercedes, making it the perfect platform for a modern, reliable, fuel injected, direct fire ignition, four-cam, 32 valve, all aluminum, lightweight V8. A V8 that weighs just 364 pounds, about the same as the original cast iron 4 cylinder 190 engine that it replaces.

Why be bothered by a finicky, hard to get parts for a 4 cylinder engine that makes the car slower than any modern production economy car when you can have modern reliability, modern fuel economy, a cleaner running engine and one that will blow the doors off most cars with one of the best V8 engines ever designed?

Another recent restomod was the installation of a fuel injected V8 into a 246 Dino. One of those will set you back around a million dollars as well.

This Mercedes 190SL has what many consider to be the best all around normally aspirated V8 engine ever designed: the legendary IUZ: This engine designed for racing, yet goes as many as 300,000 miles before needing a rebuild! A motor known to have “no issues.” That’s why this engine is a favorite for drifters who require powerful, rev happy, reliable engines.

In fact, this engine was based on CART/IRL engine design. It was planned to be used on GT500 vehicles, however it was subsequently used in the Daytona Prototypes. It has race engine features like 6-bolt main bearings and belt-driven quad-camshafts. Unlike Ferraris and other cars, if this cam belt ever brakes the pistons do NOT hit the valves.

The 190SL four speed manual gearbox has been replaced by a 5 speed with overdrive manual gearbox. The benefit of this is huge as this 190SL cruises at a relaxed 25 mph per thousand RPMs cruising: 75 mph is just three thousand RPMs. Compared to stock 190SL which is spinning at around 4200 RMPs at 75mph.

Restored by an engineer who worked for General Electric and then Boeing named Don Harmon, this is the world’s best sounding and most fun to drive 190 SL or 300 SL. This Mercedes is much faster and more refined than the legendary 300 SL Gullwing. This was Don’s pride and joy, his “masterpiece” and I’ve included a little bio of Don below. He never sold his beloved 190SL V8 and instead he owned it until he passed away. The trunk is lined with dozens of plaques Don received from various car shows dating back as early as 1994. Now this beautifully unique Mercedes is available for the next lucky owner.

This SL is a like a German Shelby Cobra…..but so much more refined and functions as a great daily driver. In fact, this Mercedes has a power to weight ratio comparable to the original Cobra yet the Cobra did not have roll-up windows, a luxurious interior, refined suspension, large chrome bumpers, glove box, etc.

This 190 SL features a 5-speed manual gearbox making it a joy to shift and a comfortable car to drive fast yet cruise comfortably at freeway speeds. The rear differential was upgraded to a Mercedes limited slip differential.

The car drives beautifully, solid and without any play in the suspension. This car does not drive like a 1950s era car but feels modern in terms of its solidity. The suspension appears to have been recently restored. As you can see from the pictures, the suspension and undercarriage are in exceptional condition.

The 32 valve, four-liter V8 idles so smoothly that looking at it you can’t even tell its running.

This Mercedes has a dual personality either as a comfortable cruiser or as an AMG-style hotrod.

A 300 horsepower vintage Mercedes SL, with a modern, reliable, clean running, fuel efficient, fuel-injected, four-cam, all-aluminum, easily serviced, 32 valve V8. A motor so light and well-engineered that its weight is the equivalent of the iron block four cylinder it replaced.

This Mercedes is something truly rare, significant and special. Faster and more fun to drive than a Gullwing or 300SL Roadster, it was owned and driven regularly for decades by the Boeing aerospace engineer. He restored and built this car back in 1994, whereupon he restored the Mercedes and engineered it so as to be the fastest and most refined 190 SL anywhere.

This Mercedes was his pride and joy and he drove it to shows consistently for many years. In fact, he lined the trunk with miniature plaques he’d received from the various shows with plaques going to back to 1994 still displayed.

Many files of records come with the car including photographs going back a number of years.

This 1962 Mercedes 190SL weighs just 2,575 pounds. That’s only 20 pounds more than the published weight four cylinder 190 SL.

The standard 190 SL, although a beautiful car to look at is quite frankly frustratingly slow, taking nearly 14 seconds to go from 0-60 and 20.5 second 1/4 mile time at just 74.6 mph.

This Mercedes SL will zero to 60 in an estimated 4.6 seconds. This car is fast!

The four cylinder 190SL engine makes less than half the power of the Gullwing, barely more than 100 hp, with published figures of actual horsepower ranging from just 89 bhp to 104 bhp.

Actual dyno results show just 73.3 to 82.6 rear wheel horsepower. Giving a further example of the lethargic nature of the 4 cylinder, it reportedly makes just 48hp at 3000 rpm.

This car makes nearly three times that amount with an estimated 300 bhp and its zero to 60 is in Cobra territory. This V8 also revs freer and higher than the four cylinder and is reportedly safe to run up to 7000 rpms although maximum HP is reached around 6500 rpms.

The 300SL Roadster is slower still as it weighs significantly more than the Gullwing.

The only comparable Mercedes from the same era is the legendary 300SLR, an 8-cylinder race car that made 300 horsepower and won World Sportscar Championship before a catastrophic crash and fire at Le Mans ended its domination prematurely.

This 190 SL has the identical wheelbase (94.5”) as the Gullwing and the same style swing-axle rear end so it has similar handling characteristics.

This 190 SL is roughly the same height as the Gullwing but 2 inches narrower and more than 9 inches shorter than the Gullwing.

Yet, the 190SL has space enough behind the front seats for a small person to sit sideways and a larger trunk than the 300SL.

This 190SL is significantly lighter than the 300SL, with more compact dimensions and far more power, this Mercedes is far more nimble and dramatically faster than the Gullwing. It is also far more reliable and infinitely easier to service, use and maintain.

This is a very special car for a person who wants to drive a classically styled, 1950s era Mercedes-Benz, but who also wants performance and reliability of a modern car. A car that is a blast to drive!

The timing belt, tensioners and water pump were all replaced in January of 2018. The clutch was replaced in February of 2018 with a new pressure plate, disc, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. The engine oil and filter (synthetic Mobil 1), rear differential oil (Mobile 1 and LSD additive) and transmission fluid (Redline synthetic fluid) were all replaced in February of 2018.

A new power steering pump was fitted in June of 2018.

New wheels and new tires were also fitted in June of 2018.

This engine has been termed “bullet proof” and is known to have no design flaws. This is a car you could drive from Los Angeles to New York while also being able to get it serviced almost anywhere.

This car represents the best of everything. Classic Mercedes styling and driving refinement yet with modern powertrain reliability and performance.

This is the only 190SL in existence like this. There is another car, called the “Bent” Mercedes, where the owner put a 190SL body on a modern SL600. Of course, it does not drive like a 190SL or look like one in the interior because, well, it is not a 190SL. But it is super cool….and cost $500,000.00 or so.

A 190SL was modified in Germany, but they modified the appearance of the 190SL’s exterior as well as the drivetrain. Their price for their car was 1,000,000.00 Euros.

There is also a 190SL with a Chevy engine in it but they completely changed the suspension and installed a solid axle rear end in so that car, while looking like a 190SL on the outside, no longer drives anything like a Mercedes. A beautiful car, likely very expensive, but a car that does not feel like a Mercedes…..and it sounds like a Chevy.

This car is the best engineered, most aesthetically pleasing, best sounding, 190 SL known in existence and for what it is, it’s extremely well priced. Far less expensive than the $1 million dollar car in Germany or the $500k 600 SL with a 190SL body mounted.

In January, at the 2018 Scottsdale Auction, RM Auctions sold a 190SL for $196,000…..and lovely as it is, it is still slower than Molasses. This car is for someone who actually wants to drive and enjoy a classic Mercedes roadster, a car that’s reliable, serviceable and comfortable to drive on the freeway, yet fast and responsive, even more so than the Gullwing. It truly is the best of all worlds. SOLD AS IS. True Miles Unknown.

Don Harmon (written by his brother-in-law)

I met Don in the mid-1970’s when he met and married my sister, Barbara. He was a Sonar Engineer, worked for General Electric for several years in both San Diego and Naples, Italy. Because of his specialist skills, he was flown in to do emergency fixes no one else could figure out. In later years, he was part of a volunteer team to restore the Kalakala, a unique streamlined diesel engine ferry that had operated in the Seattle area from 1935-1967.

He was a very focused guy and could fix anything. He always had a project going that usually involved some plan to save money. He installed solar panels to lower the electric bill, had an elaborate, very complicated wood stove burning system in the basement to heat the water, he picked up diesel oil from folks converting their heating systems to save money for his diesel operated Mercedes.

The paradox was, though he was always looking for a way to save a dollar, he would only drive a Mercedes! His license plate read Diesel Don, he was skilled as a diesel mechanic and took care of most of the repairs to this vehicle, another money saver.

Another potential money saving project at one point was the installing of a water wheel in the creek going through their property, He had the cement platform in place, bought a large metal wheel and was all set to go until the Seattle PUD stepped in and put a stop to it!

One day when I arrived at the house, the garage door was open. I noticed what looked to me like a big hunk of metal. I thought to myself, what in the world is that pile of garbage??

It sat in the garage for a few years. Eventually Don began working on it slowly by slowly. At a certain point it began to look a little like the shell of a car.

Over a number of months, lots of scraping, sanding and what all, it started looking more like the shape of a sports car of some kind.

From there, one improvement and hand-picked addition after another – seats, steering wheel, mirrors, wheel covers and hard and convertible tops. His most exciting part was found by a friend of mine in Canada. He was ecstatic when Richard found him the perfect engine. And being a bargain hunter himself, Richard got Don a steal of a deal!

Even with all that, the car still looked a bit rough. But, alas, the final touch to Don’s masterpiece was the spectacular paint job – a very shiny candy apple red with ivory beige hard top. Wow, it was unbelievably beautiful! We were all in awe of how Don’s vision had become a reality. From the earliest acquisition of that hunk of metal he had purchased those many years before – that stunning Mercedes sports car never left his mind’s eye until the final coat of paint.

As a family, we had many years of going to Car Shows with Don. He won a number of trophies and he never tired of talking about every aspect of his masterpiece. Though none of us had much to do with the developing of his project, we all watched what seemed an impossible vision become a reality. Don’s sports car restoration project was a genuine full color illustrated life lesson!

The builder of this car seems like quite the eccentric guy and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that he was an engineer. Just to draw this up in your head then tackle this project with such precision is nothing short of amazing. The seller wrote a mini-novel about what is all going on with this car but fair warning, it is tough to follow and jumps all over the place. From what I gather, this car does an amazing job of blending 190SL parts with both Lexus and custom-made parts. I really like the modified-look 16 inch Bundts to get more rubber on the road to handle the power from this car. The steering wheel, shift knobs and pedals are take them or leave them kind of stuff, but it is hard to complain about little things with a project like this. I’m still trying to figure out how they made all those gauges work in the cluster.

Honestly, the price of $160,000 doesn’t seem all that bad. If you figure in the cost of the car, cost of the parts and whatever value you put on the design and engineering that went behind the thing, you are probably over $160,000. You are buying a true one-of-one car that will never be replicated again and will stop anyone in their tracks that knows about cars. If I had more money that I knew what to do with would I buy this car? Of course. As an investment or my only special car? Maybe not. Either way, a crazy piece of engineering and I’m glad it exists.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL Limousine

Earlier this month, Carter looked at a 1979 BMW 733i Limousine that was an interesting car to say the least. Like he mentioned, it is really tough to top Mercedes-Benz when it comes to limousines, both aftermarket and factory. I personally think a factory Mercedes Pullman is without question the best limousine in the world, but some aftermarket companies have figured out how to make a nice product as well. Today’s car originally passed muster, but like all things, didn’t age all that well.

This 1987 560SEL up for sale in The Hamptons was converted to a limousine by Carat Duchatelet. Carat Duchatelet was a French company (now Belgian) that converted Mercedes S-Class into limos and other armored vehicles while adding their own special touches. This car was stretched to add a center divider as well as changed out the interior color to something a little more creamy. The entire car screams 1980s and I have come to find out that this car has an option I have never seen before on a Mercedes limousine: a calculator holder!

This is a 1987 Mercedes Benz 560SEL that has been modified by the world famous Carat Duchatelet limousine company. Carat Duchatelet is a Belgian manufacturer that services numerous royal families, heads of state and top businessmen around the globe. This particular example has 43k original miles and was commissioned by one of the biggest boxers, and then owned by a famous magazine publisher in Beverly Hills. The vehicle has modern features like top of the line sound system and back-up camera installed. It runs and drives great like any Mercedes with only 43k miles would. For more information, please call 631-318-7681.

In 1987 I’m sure this thing was mighty impressive but now 31 years later, not so much. Up front there is a generous amount of cream coloring on everything, including the steering wheel dashboard and gauge cluster. The steering wheel has the typical wear despite just 43,000 miles, but time is undefeated when it comes to leathers and dyes. In the rear, the amenities are actually not that bad with the pull out wood tray tables and two 12v outlets in the center console section. The big swooping center armrests opens up to find the calculator inside the calculator holder along with some cup holders and other little storage bins. The rear sunroof is a really nice tough that you don’t often see and they even put in a head unit on the ceiling so you can control the audio from the rear. Even though this isn’t a factory Mercedes job, this looks like it wasn’t hacked together like most limos I see. That probably has a lot to do why Carat Duchatelet is still around today and didn’t go belly up 30 years ago like most coachbuilders did.

The nearly $40,000 asking price seems very high. There just isn’t a market out there of people looking to drop a ton of money on old limousines. Limos are built to have a shelf life of a few years and then their value is reduced to nothing. No one wants to own a limo because they become incredibility dated and are a pain in the butt to own. Unless you are talking about a 600 Pullman, these just aren’t cool and even kind of tacky now. Even if you wanted a limo, you can get the W220 S500 factory Pullman for around the same price and have a much better car that even seats two more. I just don’t understanding where the number $40,000 came from because it just isn’t happening for this car.

1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Last week I checked back in on the Mercedes-Benz 190SL with the craziest engine swap I’ve ever seen in W121, a Toyota 1UZ-FE. Despite it being a very nice and exceptionally clean build, the new $160,000 price tag still has it for sale with no takers yet. It is one thing to convince someone to spend $160,000 and a whole other thing to convince them to spend it on a 1962 Mercedes convertible with a Toyota engine. Naturally, I wanted to flip it 180 degrees and look at a totally stock 190SL and a much more reasonable price tag. This 1960 up for sale in Massachusetts is actually a really nice example for 133,000 miles and has an even better price tag. How much?

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL on eBay

Year: 1960
Model: 190SL
VIN: 1210401
Engine: 1.9 liter inline-4
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Mileage: 133,000 mi
Price: $44,000 Buy It Now

This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL has 133k miles The car is unmodified apart from the radio, and both the hard and soft tops are included. Service records date back to 1965.
The body has seen one repaint in white and it looks good.
The interior was reupholstered in the past in its original color.
Squareweave carpeting and leather seats appear to have held up well.
An early Sanyo AM/FM/Cassette player was installed, but the dash is stock otherwise.
The speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and windshield washer system were repaired in 2012.
The 1.9-liter M121 SOHC inline-four features staggered valves and is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox.
The car has reportedly been serviced regularly, and detailed records date back to1965.
A service performed at a Mercedes-Benz dealer in 2012 totaled nearly $18k and included:

Engine mounts
New exhaust pipes
Fuel hoses
Carb service
Rear differential fluid service
Transmission fluid
Heater and air control cables
Front wheel bearings and seals
Wheel cylinders
Master cylinder and brake lines
Brake cables and hardware
Front and rear brake shoes
Inner and outer tie rods
Idler arm rebuild
Radiator and heater core hoses
A heavy undercoating is visible underneath! It is fundamentally solid with no rust.
It runs, stops, turns, and shifts.
Clean title in hand.

The seller lays out a pretty through description of everything that was replaced in this car and it looks like no stone was left unturned. An interesting note is that this car was taken to a Mercedes dealer in 2012 to have a $18,000 service done. Production ended on the W121 in 1963, so chances are that the technicians working on this car weren’t even born yet when these were still taken to dealer and the majority of people have probably never even seen one. With cars as old as this, there is literally no advantage to dealer service over a specialist because their lack of experience with them. I’m sure a massive mark-up was charged on the parts as well. I like the color combo of the white over the red leather and white dashboard and I think it suits this car well. Under the hood is the same story with a very clean-looking M121 engine with nothing that I see that throws up any red flags.

The price of $44,000 seems suspiciously low. If you told me to guess how much this car was listed for, I would have said at least $75,000 given that most really nice 190SLs are in the six-figure range now. If this price is legitimate, then this one is a no brainier because you will certainly never lose a dime on this car and probably be in position to make a nice chunk of money as well. I know I’m half tempted to dive in headfirst with this one to have a very nice W121 to enjoy and probably unload for a profit when the time is right. If anyone else has deeper pockets than me, which I’d say is a lot of people, then this one looks like a sure bet.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.6

No, your eyes aren’t mistaken and my finger didn’t slip up one digit on the number pad. I meant to type 6.6. Let me explain.

What we are looking at today is a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, a legendary car on its own, that had the M100 engine block opened up to increase the displacement 6.6 liters. Who is responsible for such a thing? Karl Middelhauve, of course. If you aren’t familiar with Karl, he is a man world-renowned for his expertise on M100-powered Mercedes and especially his work on the W100 600. If something can be done with a M100 Mercedes, Karl can do it and probably has already done it. This is just one of his examples. This 1969 up for sale in San Francisco is one of the few ”6.6” W109s in existence and now you can own it for a price. A very high price.

Engine: 6.6 liter V8
Transmission: 3-speed automatic

An incredible piece of 300SEL history. This 300SEL “6.6” was one of the original vehicles owned and tuned by Karl Middelhauve, who was essentially the father of the the 300SEL 6.3. The vehicle is overall is a brilliant unrestored and mostly original (original to Karl’s specs, at least) 300. It recently received an almost total refresh of the Mercedes Beige Metallic (462) paint. All chrome is original and shows no signs of pitting or discolouration. The Chocolate Leather interior and carpet show extremely well with no fading, shrinking, or evidence of dyework. All interior accessories work as they should, and all services are current. This is an incredibly well preserved and meticulously cared for 300SEL with a great deal of historical significance. Our site posts content to many other sites all over the world. To ensure all pictures are accessible, we provide a link back to each listing on our site. This listing’s URL: https://www.carsauto.com/1970-mercedes-benz-300-sel-c-1781.htm

You are probably wondering what kind of power increase was gained by going to a 6.6 liter. The honest truth is, I have no idea. Karl didn’t exactly publicize this information and judging by the other little touches, I want to say that this was one of his personal cars for a time. The giant foglights outside of the grille was always one of his signature modifications as well as the ultra-rare headlight washer system. If you want to see a cool piece of engineering, look at how perfect the wipers fit the lamps and how they are connected together. That is something I almost never see on the W108/109 cars anymore. Inside, he added another stack under the air condition vents that house two gauges. Under the hood, polished intake manifolds and valve covers, another Middelhauve touch. The 6.6 badge on the rear caps it all off and only the keen eye would know that isn’t a factory badge.

The asking price of $130,000 is tough to break down. A really nice 6.3 right now is somewhere in the $50,000 range and while I personally don’t think they all are worth that much, it is what some are selling for. My theory is that these prices are a result of the classic car boom we’ve seen in the past number of years and not really reflective out how much demand there is for these cars. I have noticed that prices have started to soften just a bit recently, but they are still what I would consider pricey. This asking price of $130,000 is simply a shot in the dark for this dealer to see if anyone bites. Chances are if you are someone who knows about the 6.3 and wants one, you will know about Middelhauve. But is there another $80,000 of value here? I don’t think so. Then again, I’ve seen crazier things happen.

2016 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6

A few weeks ago I came across a 2014 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 that was extremely rare for a few reasons. First, Mercedes only produced around 100 examples for the entire world and second, it was in the United States despite never being offered for sale here. The nearly $1,700,000 price tag shocked me a little as well, but I guess that is the price you have to pay the biggest and baddest SUV on the planet. Today, I happen to run across another G63 AMG 6×6 up for sale in Florida. I thought lightning might have stuck twice having two very rare vehicles for sale in the same time, but then I noticed that this was a model year 2016. This is an important piece of information seeing as Mercedes only produced the 6×6 from 2013 until early 2015. The next step was to run the VIN to see what the data card says and compare it to the 2014. This gave me some answers as this 2016 is missing the P66, P67 and P68 options that would indicate that this is a factory 6×6. Still, I go back to the photos and see a perfect, factory-looking 6×6 that can fool anyone. I was awfully confused until one little thing tipped me off to explain everything.

Offered for sale is this insanely amazing 2016 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6! Finished in AMG Solar Beam Yellow with a stunning Designo Black Nappa Leather interior with diamond stitching and yellow stitching with a bed liner made of teak wood!

Only 10,723 miles with distronic plus, a backup camera & a Florida title!

Equipped with a hand crafted 5.5 Liter AMG Twin Turbo V8 engine producing 563 horsepower & 561 foot lbs of torque.

The exhaust system is by Akrapovic & is a $17,000.00 exhaust system.

This monster truck has 3 portal axles & 3 differential locks! It is capable of going through any terrain.

As I was combing through the photos, this shot of the front shock broke open the case for me. That logo with the letter G inside a silhouette of G is from a company that I actually looked at a year ago. G Wagon Car Technology GmbH is located in Austria, not far from the G-Wagen factory, that does advanced modifications of Gs. I looked at their creations, a G300 CDI 6×6, back in April and a military-spec G300 CDI 6×6 over a year ago. My bet is that this regular G63 was shipped to Austria for the conversion and then shipped back to the US. Another thing that makes me think this? G Wagon Car Technology is a dealer of Akrapovic exhausts, the same exhaust that is on the G63. How convenient. Of course, the seller mentions none of this and would lead you to believe that this is a factory G63 AMG 6×6. Caveat emptor, even when talking about something this expensive.

How expensive? $1,300,000. For those keeping score at home, that is $300,000 less than the factory example last week. I suppose in the grand scheme of things, if you are spending over $1,000,000 on vehicle, let alone a G-Wagen, you have other things to busy your mind. Still, you are going to fool 99.9% of the population into thinking this is a factory G63 6×6, so I guess it isn’t a big deal. I wish I had to make these kind of tough choices.

1979 Mercedes-Benz 300D

The 1977–1981 Mercedes-Benz W123 with the naturally-aspirated OM617 5-cylinder doesn’t get enough appreciation in my eyes. Everyone loves the 1982-1985 OM617A, which is the turbocharged version, and rightfully so. Although, if you told me to pick one of the engine solely based on simplicity, I would probably pick the naturally-aspirated version. Yes, it barely has enough power to keep up with modern traffic with 115 lb⋅ft of torque, but no W123 is winning any races in 2018, no matter what the engine. There is a caveat however. In the 1977-1981 W123 with the OM617, you were cursed with the Chrysler automatic climate control system which has the same functionality as a pair of roller skates on a lake. When Mercedes updated the W123 in 1982, they realized their mistake and replaced it with a manual climate control system that, surprise surpise, still works flawlessly some 30 years later. You can’t have it all, I guess.

Today, I have an absolutely pristine 1979 300D up for sale in Poughkeepsie, New York with a hair under 53,000 miles. Painted in Topaz Brown over Parchment MB-Tex, this is one of the finest W123s I’ve come across recently and it has the story to back it up. Judging by the already fast and furious bidding, it is not going to go cheap.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300D on eBay

Year: 1979
Model: 300D
VIN: 12313012143237
Engine: 3.0 liter inline-5
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: 52,986 mi
Price: No Reserve Auction

Up for auction with NO RESERVE is my 1979 Mercedes 300D with 54,000 original miles,Texas and California car its entire life and it shows. I have over 200 pictures of most angles of the car, including underside, and can share them via dropbox. Send me a message if you’re interested and your email and I will send them to you.

It pains me to sell this vehicle, as I looked for one in this color with low mileage for years, but we are moving and I am losing my garage space. I purchased this vehicle from California and had it shipped to New York this past spring and I have the paperwork and documentation to go with it. It is very evident this car has been babied and well cared for its entire life and the documentation shows such. The original plastic is still on the tool kit in the trunk. Everything works, including the AC and even the clock. The car has been serviced and been gone through thoroughly by a Mercedes mechanic, with all fluids changed, flushed, hoses and necessary parts replaced as they should be due to age (water pump, belts, hoses, thermostat, etc.). There isn’t any rust and clearly never was. The carpet is incredible for its age and carpet color is vibrant and clean. You will not find another 300d that has this mileage and condition. It’s a 40 year old car so it’s not perfect but I’ve seen a few of these over the years and none were ever this clean. Even the antenna motor is original – I took it apart to see why the mast wasn’t going down all the way and it was like new on the inside. A new mast was installed and it functions like new. Transmission is automatic and shifts perfect with a new. Brakes are good with plenty of mean, smooth, with no leaks and stops as it should. There are absolutely no dash cracks. The car runs and drives straight, right, strong and great! There is not any pinging and knocking. I left it out of my garage the other night to attempt a cold start, without plugging it in. The temperature was 19 degrees and the car started right up at 5:30 in the morning. Tires are new with only 3,000 miles on Michelin Tires. Battery receipt is show in photos and is newer.

The car color Topaz Brown over Parchment MB-Tex. The main previous registered owner was an aerospace engineer and Air Force veteran in Rockwall, Texas, who kept the car from 1984 until his death in early 2017. After the previous owner purchased the vehicle in Texas, a new battery was installed along with new Michelin tires, belts, and a water pump. Approximately 2,800 miles have been added since, the majority of which were accumulated while driving the car from Texas to California. Power comes from a 3.0L OM617 diesel engine mated to an automatic transmission, and the car is unmodified apart from the addition of a vacuum gauge(removable without any holes in the dash. It is as simple as lifting it up as it is only resting there and is showed in the pictures), fuel filter, and auxiliary fan. This W123 is now being offered for sale with two master keys, one valet key, original key ring, a set of replacement belts, all of the manuals, brochures, receipts, an owner’s manual, toolkit, service log from the previous owner, over $5k of recent receipts since 2018 to get the car ready to drive without worry, and a copy of a clean Texas Title from and a copy of a clean California title and California plates(transferred to current owner) along with a clean New York Title, in the seller’s name. The car was brought to New York in spring of 2018 and has never seen snow or northeast weather. It is stored in a garage and has always been garage kept.

The Topaz Brown (424) finish shows some blemishes and chips which are detailed in the gallery. The rear passenger-side door shows checking with a few marks caused by someone burning through the finish with a buffer. I had a quote to paint it of $360, but the auto body shop said to leave it since the car is so original. He thought that maybe that door was repainted at one time and that why this checked and the rest of the vehicle didn’t.

14″ steel wheels have paint-matched hubcaps and Michelin Defender tires that were installed in June 2017, with about 3,000 miles on them. A four-wheel alignment was performed at this time and all receipts are in the gallery with the alignment results. The front windshield and both windshield seals were replaced in 2017, and Sekurit stampings are present on all other glass as viewable in the gallery. The original antenna mast was replaced, and works properly. The original antenna motor was in clean working condition (almost new). The first-aid kit is intact and appears to be untouched.

Inside, the Parchment MB-Tex appears in good condition with a small puncture evident in the driver’s seat bottom. The cabin shows little wear, with clean loop carpeting and taut rear cargo pockets – this is rare as they are normally stretched out, but not in this car. They are perfectly tight. The door seals are cracked in a couple of places, but do not leak when washed. These seals are still available, cheap, quick and easy to replace. The car isn’t driven in the rain and do no leak when washed so I’ve left them.

No cracks are present in the dashboard. Zebrano wood trim looks glossy and intact with no notable chips or cracking. The A/C has been converted to r134a and does blow ice cold and a new A/C servo was installed in June 2018 with a recharge and test to the system. Brake fluid was flushed and replaced and all wheel cylinders were checked and confirmed to be in working order without leaks in June 2018. The clock is functional. Other interior components work properly, including the factory Becker Europa stereo, cruise control, power windows, and vacuum-powered door locks. The previous owner added a vacuum gauge on the under-dash panel which is easily removable without any affect to the interior as it is simply resting in place and not mounted with holes or tape. The roughly 54,000 miles indicated on the six-digit odometer are accurate. The pedals of the car are in immaculate condition and the carpets show little wear and no holes. I installed custom cut all-weather matts in June 2018 to further protect the carpeting. All normal wear items on the car match the mileage. Car has had over $5,000 invested into it in the last year and a half. I wanted the car to be able to go out on cruises with my family and be trouble free, so I replaced every item I could think of that would typically age and could cause a problem. This includes rubber vacuum lines, vacuum shut off, vacuum valves etc.

A factory toolkit, jack, and replacement belts accompany the vehicle. The 3.0L OM617 five-cylinder diesel engine was rated at 87 horsepower when new. Maintenance performed during the last 3,000 miles has included a new water pump, A/C belt, alternator belt, power steering belt, neutral safety switch, complete fluid flush and replacement, thermostat, and radiator cap. AC Service: AC charge, AC test, AC Servo with improved design of aluminum body($700), AC Amplifier, A new battery was also recently installed. The vacuum pump diaphragm has been rebuilt, and the oil and filter were changed approximately 100 miles ago. When the water pump and vacuum pump work was done I had the thermostat and fan clutch replaced as precautions as it was already disassembled for the vacuum pump rebuild.

Included are: service records, original manuals, receipts, California plates, California Title, copy of the Texas Title, Obituary from previous owner, a very detailed handwritten log from the previous owner that begins at 20k miles and ends in 2013 at 50k miles when it was transferred to new owner(from Texas to California), after owners passing. The car is a time capsule and worth the investment.

The car shows very well and must be seen to be appreciated. The paint has scratches and dings but shines nicely and is great example of a survivor – a recent full detail was completed on the car.

I will assist with getting this on a truck and may be able to deliver for a fee depending on location. Contact me before bidding. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. A $500 deposit is due within 24 hours of the sale via PayPal and remainder of the payment is due cash in person or wired to my account directly. If you want me to accept a bank check it takes a full 30 days before the car can be released. I was burned via eBay on a bank check once and it won’t happen again. If you have questions, please ask before bidding. If you would like to see the car I am happy to show it and would prefer you did see it before buying or bidding. Full payment must be made within 7 days. I may be able to store the vehicle for a little while, but arrangements must be made first. I reserve the right to end the auction early for any reason. The vehicle is being sold as is where is without any expressed or implied warranty on any component of the vehicle. Spare tire was stolen during shipping from California.

On Dec-14-18 at 10:13:57 PST, seller added the following information:
Here is a link to over 200 photos and a video of the vehicle running: http://slickpic.us/2066065WVMZ

Brown is a tough color if you don’t stay on top of keeping it nice and thankfully, this one looks amazing. To be honest, almost everything on this car looks amazing. The seller lays it all out and goes through a laundry list of repairs and upkeep on this W123, so I am confident it performs as good as it looks. He even went through the trouble of fixing everything wrong with the forsaken Chrysler climate control system to keep to running as it should. Not an easy or inexpensive task to say the least. The inside of the car looks great without any major flaws and even the carpet is in excellent shape. There isn’t much I can say more about how great this car is and how well it has been cared for.

Naturally, all this greatest is going to come at a cost. This is probably going to easily be a $15,000 example and maybe even $20,000. This is without a doubt a ”collector car” and is going to remain that way. It is in that sweet spot of having just enough miles on it where you don’t feel super guilty about driving it now and then, but not so many miles that it isn’t consider low miles. I’m excited to see where this one ends up.

Feature Listing: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG had the nearly impossible task of being the spiritual successor of the legendary 300SL Gullwing. I say ‘nearly impossible’ because if one car could measure up to the 300SL nearly 50 years later, the SLS AMG somehow managed. Jeremy Clarkson raved about SLS AMG calling it “the greatest car in the world” at the time and that ”this is the thinking man’s supercar”. I agree completely. The team at AMG managed to make a beautifully contoured car with Gullwing doors and somehow engineered it to get to 60 mph in the mid-three second range and top out at 200 mph. All of this is possible in a car so comfortable and easy to live with that you could use it as a daily driver. It was the ultimate grand tourer with doors to die for. Granted, if you were the kind of person to buy a SLS you almost certainly had other vehicles in your fleet and that seems to be the case with today’s car. This 2011 painted in the sleek Obsidain Black checks in with just 4,500 miles and looks every bit the part. The even better news, once you swing open those doors, the car only looks better.

Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic
Mileage: 4,554 mi
Price: Reserve Auction

2011 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG- One owner purchased new at Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale March 16th 2011 with 2 miles. Now showing 4554 miles. Service intervals were completed in 2011, 2012, 2104, 2016, 2017, and last in January 2018 as evidenced by the Carfax. Delivered in Obsidian Black with Designo light Brown interior this SLS has not been dolled up for sale. I photographed it exactly as it was used last. It shows excellent. It appears there most options were included, but if you want to see exactly what this SLS came with I do have a comprehensive build sheet. I am happy to email the build sheet as well as the car fax if you message or call me at the number below. I am sure anyone looking at this has an idea of what it is. I wont bore you with cut and paste descriptions. I will detail what I see about this car below.

Condition in details:

Body: Excellent paint. Very little signs of use as you would expect from a 4554 mile car. There is a small bit of rash on nose. Specifically on the lower, ground facing faring. There is a pic in the gallery. I found 4 very small rock chips. None bigger then the tip of a sharpie marker. There is a discoloration on the passenger door jam. Looks like a mini oil slick. Might rub out. A pic is included. Its in the door jam. this can not be seen on the outside of the car.

Motor and Transmission: I did not detail this car. The engine has a bit of dirt on it. It runs perfectly. Starts and drives perfectly. The light is now on for a service B. There has only been 346 miles driven since the Service A completed in January. I have been reading on the forums that the car utilizes time and miles to show the service intervals. The tires are DOT date coded the end of 2010. they are original, and in perfect condition. Little to no wear, and no dry signs of dry rot.

Interior: Excellent. I find no flaws, and I do not use those words lightly.

Here is a link to a google album with several pictures as well as a couple of videos. if you can not open the link I am happy to email the invite.

I have priced this SLS towards the low end of these. Less then many with 20,000 plus miles. The car is really for sale. I am not trying to see the value I want to find a new owner. Please call me to ask any questions, make an appointment to see it, and of coarse make an offer.

Please call me to discuss this beautiful Mercedes, or arrange an inspection. My auction almost always end early due to a sale. I am happy to discuss a purchase price with any one who calls. This is a private party purchase which your tax will very state to state Arizona does not have sales tax on private party purchases. You can reach me at 602-908-9267.

Open those Gullwing doors and you are greeted with the fine light brown leather that compliments this Obsidian Black so well. As you might expect from a SLS with 4,500 miles, it looks nearly perfect. The Alcantara headliner is also a touch that often goes overlooked on these and just another little thing that Mercedes got right with this car. The seller included a link to an extensive photo album – click here!

While the exterior is striking and the interior a wonderful place to be, this car is all about the engine. The 6.2 liter V8 that most think is borrowed from the 63 series AMG cars from the same era, is actually quite different. Called the M159, this engine has over 120 different parts compared to the M156 and is only used in the SLS. It puts out 563 horsepower and 479 lb⋅ft of torque to produce a sound that surprises everyone. Seriously, listen to this exhaust note. That is not some kind of aftermarket exhaust or muffler delete, this is how the M159 sounds. Mercedes knew that had to nail it with this car and they certainly did in my opinion.

I tell this to anyone who will listen that is in the market for a sports car over $100,000: “Go look at the SLS AMG”. Our Editor Carter instructed in one at a Supercar event and found the experience mind-boggling, giggling after every run. Our friend Doug DeMuro reviewed it last year and thought the same thing that most people do. That is it just another Mercedes sports car and would drive as such. Then he started driving it and was totally blown away to the point where at the end of the drive he says to the salesman ”I think I want one”. It is that good. Values are remaining steady and they certainly look to be staying that way so if you looking for something unique that delivers on nearly every front, don’t sleep on the SLS.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R

My favorite new Mercedes-Benz, the AMG GT R, just past its first birthday and I thought I’d swing back around to check in at where they are at value wise. When I first look at this model, a Green Hell Mango example with just 42 miles was listed for a little under $260,000. I thought that was a little odd because the sticker price was around $190,000 and some very good Mercedes customers were getting them for that. A few months later I looked at a black one with 300 miles that was listed much cheaper at $207,500. Quite the discount. Then, back in October I found another Green Hell Mango (what a name) with 2,200 miles for $185,000. Naturally, I thought I’d keep up with the pattern and check out another Magnetite Black car up for bid in the Los Angeles area. Are the prices still dropping?

If you want a street legal race car… this is it!

Truth be told, if you made me pick between the black or green on this car, I’d have a pretty tough time deciding. The green is an amazing color, but the Magnetite Black, which is a slightly different shade than regular black, looks absolutely sinister on this GT R. This car is no different and could honestly pass a brand new car. Looking at the various things in the background of the photos, this owner has more than a few toys to keep him occupied so it isn’t a huge deal as to why a basically brand new car is for sale.

The auction starts at $169,000, which is right about the base price these start at. Thing is, there probably isn’t a single ”base” GT R in existence because the carbon fiber package that every GT R seems to have is around $5,000 and any color other than standard black or Jupiter Red is thousands of dollars. That Green Hell Mango color? $9,900. No one said being cool was cheap. Add in Ceramic Composite brakes for another $9,000 and you’d swear you are at a Porsche dealer picking out options on a new 911 judging how expensive this stuff is. Looking at the data card, it does look like this car does have every option, including the yellow seatbelts, that probably put the sticker price right under $190,000. Essentially a $20,000 discount for giving up 2,000 which is great for the buyer, not so great for the seller. The big question is what these are going to do in another few years. Regular GT and GT S models seem to be holding their values well since they are a standalone AMG model and if you told me to guess, the GT R will probably do the same. That is until GT R Black Series comes in 2020.

Last weeks very special 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.6 was one of the most interesting cars I’ve looked at in a while but one of our readers spotted something in the background. As you might have noticed, that something was a R129 SL500 Silver Arrow. Today’s vehicle isn’t that same car because that dealer doesn’t seem to have it listed for sale, but it is another very nice Silver Arrow so I figured that will work just fine. This one up for sale in Florida checks in with just a hair under 70,000 miles and honestly, has a very fair price on it. How much?

The Silver Arrow was the goodbye to the 12 year production run for the R129. The R230 was ready to launch, so Mercedes was wise to offer a special edition in 2002 called the Silver Arrow, a tribute to the 1930s Silver Arrow race cars. All them were painted Brilliant Silver, they had special wheels, a two-tone interior and interesting gauge cluster finish. That was it. 1550 Silver Arrows were produced for the US market; 100 SL600s and 1450 SL500s. Quite the difference there. Opinions have always been hot or cold on them, but I think as they age, the sentiment will soften and they’ll be looked at fondly. I’m not one to fawn over cars that intentionally were made as a last-ditch effort just to move the rest of old stock before a new generation launches, but I don’t control the market.

As for this specific car, I don’t see any real objections as it looks like it has been well-loved and taken care of. The white leather and especially the white leather on the wheel is extremely susceptible to showing dirt and thankfully these are really clean. The only really minor thing that I found is the plastic piece that covers where the seat belt attaches to the seat frame is cracked, which might bother some people. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that piece is no longer available from Mercedes, so good luck finding a used one that isn’t cracked as well. Other than that, it looks like a winner.

Prices on Silver Arrows have always been stronger than other 2002s, but usually only by a few thousand dollars when looking at comparable condition and mileage cars. I think $17,000 is probably fair seeing where R129 prices are heading. It seems like lots of people are speculating, mostly dealers, on clean R129s and you can assume that these and very clean SL600s are going to lead the way. Can you find a cheaper one? Probably. I don’t think these will ever be worth big money, but I think they’ll age well and values will remain respectable. If the Silver Arrow is your thing, not a bad example at all.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E Avantgarde Azzurro

Mercedes-Benz is normally a very serious company. Stay in line, follow the rules and you will succeed. This has been their modus operandi for about the past 115 years or so and it is hard to argue against. However, every once in a while Mercedes will make a car that shows that can have a sense of humor, or at least know how to have a little fun. Today, I have one of those cars.

This is a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E. Now you are probably looking at that pretty blue paint and saying that is it a nice color and while it is very nice, the real gem is inside the car. That is because this is a 190E Avantgarde Azzurro. What is that? Well, for the 1992 model year Mercedes made three very interesting 190E Avantgarde special editions. In this situation, the word Avantgarde means literally means its definition of  ”nontraditional, aesthetic innovation and initial unacceptability, and it may offer a critique of the relationship between producer and consumer.” In laymen’s terms, Mercedes made three cars with crazy interiors. They were called the Rosso (Red), the Verde (Green) and the Azzurro (Blue). The Rosso was a 1.8-liter with a wild multicolored interior, the Verde used the 2.5-liter five-cylinder diesel with a crazy green polka-dot green interior and today’s car, the Azzurro, used the 2.3-liter with 190E Sportline leather interior trimmed in four different colors. Even better, the Azzurro cars were all in the Sportline trim with a lowered suspension and a 5-speed manual or automatic. Mercedes said their goal with these cars was to draw in a younger crowd but the prices of $31,000, $34,000 and $40,500 in 1992 maybe turned away some people. Production numbers varied  with 2,300 Rosso cars built, followed by the Azzurro at 950 and the Verde at 750. Needless to say none of these cars were ever sold in North America, but now that they are all 25 years-old, they might be worth bringing across the ocean. This example up for sale in The Netherlands might just be the perfect example.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E at Klass de Poel

Model: 190E 2.3 Avantgarde Azzurro
VIN: WDB2010281F969138
Engine: 2.3 liter inline-4
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: 181,967 km (113,069 mi)
Price: N/A

The first Avantgarde series from Mercedes which were the basis for the future. Only at the E-class W210 did they pick up the term Avantgarde again. Of the W201 190 series there were three types of Avantgarde, namely;

the 190E 1.8 Avantgarde Rosso
(production number about 2,200), the 190D 2.5 Avantgarde Verde
(about 890 produced) and
the 190E 2.3 Avantgarde Azzurro Sportline
(about 950 produced)

The latter was also the most striking. The most special color that was available on no other model and the interior which consists of four different colors in combination with the Sportline package. You think it’s great or you think it’s terrible. That it is now a collectors item seems clear to me.

Upon arrival, this car is equipped with LARGE maintenance (automatic oil, spark plugs etc. etc.) and new MOT

Special option package ..
240 – Outside temperature gauge
243 – Sports seats front and rear
281 – 390mm Leather steering wheel
331 – Cassette compartment
412 – Electric sliding and tilting roof
420 – Automatic 4-stage
430 – Head restraints at the back
442 – Airbag driver
466 – Central Lock
531 – Antenna
584 – Electric windows front / rear
591 – Tinted heat resistant glass
620 – Catalyst
650 – Light Metal sportsline rims
751 – Becker Grand Prix
873 – Seat heating
876 – Backlight on door contact
915 – Larger fuel tank
950 – Sportline
954 – Avantgarde Azzurro

All the little details on the interior of this 190E just make me smile. I’m sure it was a production nightmare to make four different colors for the seats and floor mats so I guess that explains why they only made 950. That and of course convincing someone to spend $40,500 ($74,000 in 2018 money!) on a car with four different color seats probably wasn’t the easiest thing in the world.  This color really pops on these cars and the added look of the lowered suspension makes this one look great regardless of the wild interior. The automatic is a little bit of a letdown because the 5-speed is a really fun option in these, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Now that these are 25, they are in high demand given their rarity and quirks, so the price is going to reflect that. Although all three cars are really cool, most would agree that the Azzzuro is the one to buy because of its equipment thanks to the Sportline package. Are these going to be $50,000 cars one day? Probably not, but there is going to be some appreciate from them. Retro stuff from the 80s and 90s has never been hotter than right now and this car is a classic example of that. If one of these ever came stateside I would take a hard look at them, but my guess is someone is going to snatch this one up quick.

Feature Listing: 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD

Recently, I’ve been going on and on about how great a car the W116 Mercedes-Benz 300SD is. This came about from my look at the incredible 1980 with 8,200 miles on it for a not-so-inexpensive price of nearly $60,000. Granted, that is the most expensive W116 300SD in the world and it probably isn’t in line with what the car is really worth at all. Thankfully, there are some nice other examples out there – I’m not talking about Craigslist specials that look like they’ve been housing a family of possums for the past 11 years. One such W116 is this 1979 up for sale in Phoenix, Arizona. Painted in the rare Milan Brown, this 300SD has a cool background story of being in the same family since new, but most importantly, has been thoroughly loved throughout the years.

1979 Mercedes 300SD – This beautiful S class has been passed down three generations. We have service records from new. The car was purchased new in New Jersey by the current owner ‘s(Glenn) aunt. She was the executive secretary to the President of Mercedes-Benz US. In 1986 Glenn’s aunt sold the Mercedes to his Mom with 79,000 miles. She cared for the car meticulously until 1992 when she gave the car to Glenn. Glenn received the car with 116,000 miles. The picture in the gallery of it coming off of a car carrier is when Glenn took delivery. It looked very nice before the refurbishment. Glenn had the car comprehensively painted, and freshened up by a professional shop that specialized in Mercedes. I will detail the condition of the car below. Please go to the google picture link to see 300 pictures as well as videos of the car running and driving.

Body: Excellent shape. Complete glass out repaint performed by Ivan of Ivan’s Auto Body in Laveen Arizona in 2007. The work is excellent. The paint into the jams shows as new. The driver’s door shows some color hue difference. We think this is due to the doors being painted separate of the rest of the body. it is possible that the paint mix was off. There has not been paint work since the 2007 application. I noted very little if any chips or scratches. These pictures were taken on a random day not after a major detail. The stainless and chrome shows chipping and staining commiserate with original bright work. Although this car has been in Arizona since 1992 the rockers had rust bubbles. At the time of the paint work Ivan was able to secure factory rocker panels for 800 each. These rockers were professional welded in with non detectable results. The rubber for the doors, windows, and sun roof was all replaced in 2007, and all shows as new. Detailed pictures of the body including the jams, rockers, and the chrome/stainless can be seen at the below google album link.

Interior: Excellent original condition. The seats have been re-stuffed, but the leather is original. No rips or tears. The head liner has small separation at the sunroof. The sunroof opens and shuts perfectly. The windows all work as designed. Door locks are slow. The top of the dash is crack free. The wood trim has very minor cracks visible in the pictures in the gallery. All new rubber seals make the interior very quite while running at the speed of traffic. The audio system has been updated to a Alpine head unit as well as JL power amplifier utilizing a sub and separates for speakers. All of the switch gear and gauges work, and display very well. The AC and heat work perfectly.

Chassis: The bottom of the car is dirty. A major scrub down will show a clean rust free chassis, and most likely still have the Milan Brown color. The rear end is leaking a bit. During the refurbishment the shocks and bushings were replaced. The receipts are in the Google gallery for your review. The tires show as new, but are date coded 2006. A receipt for the tires is in the gallery.

Motor and Gear Box: Proper maintenance intervals have been followed. transmission has been re-built. The motor runs perfect do to the care, attention, and mostly solid design. Details of the maintenance records are documented back to 1979 in the gallery.

Drivability: We drove to the picture site, and it was a pleasure to ride in. Very quite cabin. Smooth, and steady. The interior smells almost new. I hope someone comes to inspect to see just how well-preserved this Mercedes is.

Please feel free to call me to discuss this Mercedes, or arrange an inspection. My auction almost always end early due to a sale. I am happy to discuss a purchase price with any one who calls. This is a private party purchase which your tax will very state to state Arizona does not have sales tax on private party purchases. You can reach me at 602-908-9267.

When I say thoroughly loved, I wasn’t kidding. The seller does a good job of documenting everything with this 300SD, and it deserves the reading time because it is worth it. The maintenance records go back the entire way to 1979 and even has the photos from when it was new rolling off the transporter. It isn’t a perfect car or even a totally stock car, but that is what you will get today when looking at one of these if you intend to use it. I think this is the perfect example of a car that you can buy to use regularly, as it has enough miles on it where you don’t feel guilty about adding more, but at the same time has so many where it is nearing the end of its life. Granted, there really is no such thing as the ”end of it’s life” when talking about a 300SD unless it is extremely rusty and that is far from this case with this car. It was totally repainted in 2007 and while not Concours-quality, it is good job and kudos to the seller for being honest about the imperfections. The upgraded climate control unit that replaces the evil Chrysler servo is a very nice touch and basically a must-have in Arizona. Like I said, this is a car that can be enjoyed and not fretted over but still be driven with a ton of pride.

I’m curious to see where the bidding stops with this one. It is pretty clear that the days of picking up a nice diesel W116, W123 or W126 for $3,000 on Craigslist are over. All the basket cases are gone to the great junkyard in the sky and all the cars worthy cars, like this one, have been either been refreshed to an extent or kept nice from the beginning. The $5,000 mark is about the floor for a presentable W116 300SD, so you can basically take guesses on value from there. Of course, this all comes down to how badly someone wants one of these, but the bidding seems strong so far. I think this is a very unique car given its extensive service history, and the bidding should recognize that as the clock ticks down on the bidding. I can’t wait to find out.

Michael Jordan’s 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722

Over a year later, Air Jordan’s 722 is still for sale in Texas. Same photos and same mileage previously. Find it here on eBay.

Michael Jordan is one of the most popular athletes and brands in the world. He’s worth over a billion dollars and with that usually comes some expensive cars. Normally, wealthy celebrities go out grab the latest and greatest vehicle, drive it for a few years, then rinse and repeat. But even before Jordan was worth 10 figures, he always had some really enthusiast-minded cars. He had a Ferrari 512 TR, W140 S600, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, C4 Corvettes, SL55 AMG, 930 Slantnose and my personal favorite, a 993 Turbo S. Today’s car for sale in Texas might be one of the rarest cars he’s ever owned. This 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition owned by M.J. is just one of 150 ever built. And judging by its original price tag of just under $500,000, it was probably one of the most expensive cars he has even bought.

***Previously owned by Michael Jordan***

Welcome to Crave Luxury Auto, one of the nation’s premier marketers of high-line and luxury automobile dealers. The winner of this auction will have the opportunity to own this beautiful 2007 Mercedes Benz SLR 722 Edition. The paint is in excellent condition and it is apparent that this car was garaged and meticulously-maintained. The interior is virtually flawless and is equipped with all the right options with only 1,038 miles. You can’t go wrong with this fabulous vehicle!

The 722 Edition of the SLR was named for Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson to celebrate their victory Mille Miglia in 1955 in which those drove a 300 SLR. The actual ”722” refers to the starting number 722, indicating the start time of 7:22 a.m. This modern-day 722 had some different aero parts, a tweaked suspension, 19 inch wheels, bigger brakes and an increased top speed up to 209 mph over the standard SLR. I like to think of this car as the Black Series SLR before Mercedes was pumping out the Black Series on almost every chassis. It’s a more aggressive, slightly faster and much lower production version — if you can wrap your head around that on the already super rare SLR.

As for the price, this car is listed for $625,000, which is double what you can pick up a normal SLR for. It’s not Michael Jordan’s name that is justifying the asking price on this thing either. Other 722 Editions are asking just as much and even a little more. I’d have a hand time paying double what I can buy a standard SLR for but I guess when you are shopping mid six-figure super cars, whats another few hundred thousand to you? Much like every other celebrity car I look at, the ownership is nothing more than a cool footnote and the real value comes from the car itself.

1993 Mercedes-Benz E36 AMG Cabriolet

Here is something I don’t see all that often. This is a 1993 Mercedes-Benz E36 AMG Cabriolet. If you are asking yourself why you never see these cars, it is because they are incredibly rare. The W124 E36 is exactly what it sounds like, a W124 with a 3.6 liter M104 from AMG with some cool bumpers and wheels. For as German as Mercedes-Benz is, they are dreadful for publishing production records on cars that aren’t worth a million dollars. Although maybe they just aren’t very open with sharing their information either. From what I understand, under 200 W124 E36 AMG cars were produced during the last few years of the W124 production run in the sedan, coupe, cabriolet and estate bodies. Of the less than 200, 57 officially went to the UK as right hand drive models and the rest were scattered around the rest of the world. Much to no ones surprise, none made it to the North America. Today, we have an E36 AMG Cabriolet up for bid in Illinois. Except this car isn’t one of those 200 cars. Please stay with me here.

This car left the Mercedes-Benz factory as the Japanese-spec 320CE and then was converted to an E36 AMG Cabriolet at AMG Japan. The data card confirms this and even comparing it to the data card from a factory E36, they are quite a few differences. Is this a ”real” AMG? Technically, yes. I’ve written about this subject before as AMG Japan was an official subsidiary that built AMG cars. Does that make them any less special or rare? Depends on how you look at it. Engines are engines and body parts are body parts no matter who screwed them together, so you can make the call whether it matters if that occurred in Affalterbach or Japan.

In addition to the 3.6 liter upgrade, the car has the typical body kit and AMG Monoblocks. The seller says it has a different rear end as well as suspension from AMG, although I can’t really confirm that because these photos are absolutely terrible. We are in 2019 and still can’t figure out how to take a decent photo. The front end is suspiciously low even for the AMG suspension and those rear badges are totally wrong as well. The ”E36” spacing is off by a mile and the E36 cars had a different style AMG badge that was all one piece. Although this car does have a pleasant surprise that the factory E36 cars don’t. This car has the 722.5 5-speed automatic transmission in place of the standard 722.3 4-speed. That is quite a big deal in the W124 cars and I was really surprised to see that in this car.

Where will the bidding for this one end? I have no idea. The auction was already over $26,000 before it was ended and relisted and I can say I was a little surprised by that. Like mentioned, most of the photos are downright useless so whoever is bidding on this car probably has an idea of what this is. I can’t say the same thing for the seller because while he knows what the E36 is, I don’t think he realizes that this is an AMG Japan car. If you forced me to guess, I would say over $30,000 wouldn’t surprise me. However I think the buyer of this car will need some extra funds to sort out some issues that are found to be discovered during a further inspection.

1982 Mercedes-Benz 500SL

Most of the time the cars I feature are really nice examples. Mostly because no one wants to look at junk, outside of a few exceptions, and the majority of the cars that are offered for sale to the masses are actually cars people want to buy. For every nice W124 Mercedes-Benz on eBay, there are a dozen of them sitting behind barbed-wire fences at Buy-Here, Pay-Here lots with one flat tire. Today’s car, a 1982 500SL, is in an interesting position. The model itself is always considered desirable and people generally like them, but this specific example needs a lot of love to get it back to its former glory. Given the price, compared to really nice ones, is it worth taking on as a project?

Normally R107s, especially European-spec cars, are in above average shape. This car from Dubai, now in California, is not. The cosmetics are pretty rough with a torn up seat, ripped top, cracked dash and a general state of looking worn all over the car. Outside isn’t much better with some cracked paint and scuffs on the bumpers in various places. The seller says mechanically there are some issues but nothing that would stop you from driving this car as-is. That is of course unless you live in California because this car has no cats, so it can’t be registered there. This is a very good example of a ”10 foot car” that looks fine driving down the street or sitting across the parking lot, but when you get up close enough to touch it, there are lots of little things that you will notice. The Euro bumpers are nice, but it has those terrible Centra wheels from the bad part of the 1980s. There just seems a lot of loose ends with this one that will keep you busy for a while if you so chose.

How much for all these problems? A little under $13,000. That is a lot of money to sign up for work and this work isn’t going to come cheap. Take it from someone who owns a Mercedes that needed just a bunch of little things that I’m still working on over two years later, it is never as easy or as cheap as you think it is. Is $13,000 a good deal for this car? In my opinion, not exactly. If you just wanted to hop in and drive it as it sits, you could do that, but I don’t think you would be happy with it. My advice would be to save a few extra thousand and buy an example that is already sorted out, even if it is a US-spec car. Believe me, there are plenty of those out there.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 190D with 2,200 miles

Last week I looked at one of my favorite and oddest Mercedes-Benz ever: the 190E Avantgarde Azzurro. It was an incredibly expensive car for its time at $40,500 ($72,000 in 2018 money), especially when you considered it was marketed towards younger buyers. As expensive as that car was, Mercedes offered a much more inexpensive option if you still wanted a new W201. How inexpensive? Nearly half the price at just $21,000. Of course you might have noticed I am talking about the 190D. This 190D up for sale in Poland has just 2,200 miles and in addition to being a time capsule, is probably the most bare bones and basic Mercedes I’ve looked at in a long time, if ever. The data card lists just six different build codes compared to the 20 for the Avantgarde Azzurro. Seriously, my manual-everything 1983 240D has more luxuries than this car. I hope the buyer for this car has lots of money and likes the sound of total silence, but that is what is going to take to own this car. Let me explain.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190D at Classic-Trader

Year: 1993
Model: 190D
VIN: WDB2011221G090987
Engine: 2.0 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 3,546 km (2,203 mi)
Price: €28,000 ($32,023)

Driving that car you can feel like travelling in time to the year 1993. We offer for sale a close to brand new condition Mercedes 190D, with only 3500 kilometers on the clock. Car in fabulous museum condition, one of the best to exist. Was bought new in Mercedes-Benz dealership in Eggenfelden by Austrian farmer, who brought it back home. Car comes with it’s original “Kaufvertrag” – contract of sale from 1993 and even a “Sparkasse” Bank receipt for 37’000 DM, so was the price of the Benz back then. Of course original service book and a set of keys is also present. The owner bought the car becouse the production of w201 stopped in 1993. He was an owner of another 190D, which he used on daily basis. The black one was meant to be keeped as a supply vechicle, when the second one gets broken. All those years the baby-benz was stored unused in dry garage and never seen sunlight. The car was very well kept, engine was started every weekend, paint was covered from dust. In 2015 car was bought to our collection from the family of the first owner. We never seen better preserved w201, so rare with diesel engine. Diesel Mercedes-Benz is known to last for 1’000’000 kilometers, and it’s very hard to find a one in good condition. They were build to last, and this one was accidentally preserved as time capsule. We hope the car will find a good home and someone that understands it’s uniqueness.

First, I want to talk about the condition of this car. Next time you see someone say ”showroom condition” in some random for sale ad, show them this car. This is how they are supposed to look. Everything is spotless and every single paint mark on the bolts and suspension is still fresh. The interior still has the hang tags from the steering wheel. Even the little plastic bag that holds the keys are still there. Going even further, the little sticker on the side of the OM601 is still factory fresh. Usually all these just burn off over the first few years from the heat, but somehow this one still survived 25 years and this cars first 2,200 miles. I am truly blown away by how mint this car still is.

Next, I want to talk about the actual 190D. If the W123 240D had a son, it would be this car. Look up ”basic” in the dictionary, you will see this car. It has a 5-speed manual, cloth seats, hubcap, no air condition, crank windows and no radio. It doesn’t even have a tachometer! Like I said earlier, it just has six options on the data card. The five-speed gearbox, airbag, central locking, ABS, catalytic converter and a power antenna for the radio that doesn’t exist. Even the mirrors are manual adjust on this W201. Honestly, if this car had a radio, I think it would appeal to a lot of people for its basicness. There is something soothing about knowing that you own and drive has very little, if anything, that is capable of breaking outside of the engine. You can drive this car for generations without any major problems and there is value in that.

Now we have to talk about price. This brand new 190D has an asking price of $32,000. I love this car, but I don’t love it for $32,000. I honestly think I would be just as happy with a 190D 5-speed with 250,000 miles for $4,500. I totally get why this dealer is asking that, but I think they are just overshooting it just a bit. Even if it had a radio and air conditioning the price might be possible, but for that kind of cash people are going to just want some creature comforts. I’m glad that this thing exists and I’m glad that I can be on the lookout for one of these now.
