1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE

It doesn’t get more quintessential classic Mercedes-Benz sedan than the W108 and W109 chassis. The vertical grille matched with the vertical headlights, that is all grafted onto a body of simple and square contours. None of the proportions are too big or too small, and all the angles are consistent. There is nothing offensive on this car to be found. Thankfully, the quality is as good as the looks. Stay on top of things, and they are built to last generations. Today’s car, a 1970 280SE up for sale in Switzerland, is a perfect example of that. It has never been restored and hasn’t been locked away in a bubble, just used as needed and meticulously looked after. Even better, it has a nice little ownership story of the diplomatic variety.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Automatic

Realistically, this probably isn’t the first W108 you’re viewing. It might, however, be the last. This isn’t a “ran when parked” kind of listing. This is an unrestored, Swiss-delivered, two-owner, fully documented, turn-key, ready-to-drive car. Let’s get into the history a bit, shall we? 🙂

It’s September 1970, a Swiss Ambassador to the United Nations takes delivery of his brand new Mercedes-Benz 280SE in Switzerland. The career diplomat sees little of his home, but he opts against bringing his new car on assignments, instead entrusting its care to his long-time friend and chauffeur Mr A.

Mr A. pampers this S-Class, not missing a single service appointment as evidenced by the complete records, keeping the flagship in tip-top shape for whenever the Ambassador rings for a lift.

Somewhere around 1985, the Ambassador, born in 1920 retires. He keeps his car and his chauffeur. In 2008, Mr Ambassador passes and leaves the car to Mr A., so the caring hands which had become so familiar with the car over nearly four decades assume ownership. The level of care and maintenance remains at the same high standard for the next ten years. In early 2018, at age 94, Mr A. has to relinquish his licence for medical reasons. The Merc, for the first time in 48 years, moves to a new home – ours.

A car whose state is wedged solidly between stunning driver and concourse condition, with an entirely complete history, it’s a unicorn. I’ve seen specimens whose soul had been restored away, whose history was limited to knowing where the car was sold last. I wanted none of that, and since you’re still reading, you must feel much the same. A lost history is incredibly difficult, often impossible to recover.

The almost fifty-year-old tobacco full-leather interior has its lovely patina and wonderful smell. No rips, tears, punctures, just the irreproducible character of craftsmanship of a long-gone era. The deep blue paint, code DB904, is in a condition you’d expect on a car a few years old at most, not nearly half a century. A rich shine, mirror-like finish with extremely minimal signs of wear, limited to a few minor scratches and chips. Other than the number plate, nothing has been retouched in the photos, judge for yourself. There is no rot, bubbling, or peeling. The just over 3’000km (total 146’000km/~91’000 miles) per year on average didn’t take a toll on this car.

The exceptionally preserved condition also applies to the undercarriage. This saloon lives in a garage with a light grey floor, and there isn’t a stain on it; it’s bone dry underneath! The build quality is sensational overall. The sound the doors make when they close, incredible!

Everything does exactly what it’s meant to do. All electrics work, including the sunroof. The mechanical bits need no attention either. I’ve replaced the front axle mounts, tie rods, all four shock absorbers (Bilstein), tyres (except for the original spare wheel), ignition cables, and sparkplugs. The Boge Hydromat (compensator spring) has been refurbished by ZF Friedrichshafen AG and comes with a 3-year warranty starting March 2019. Some switch in a steel spring to avoid the expense of sorting the Hydromat but doing so would have been an injustice to the car. It must be as Mercedes engineered it.

The 2.8 litre straight six, with even compression, fires eagerly without hesitation, sending its 160 hp through the smooth four-speed automatic to the rear wheels. While setting a land speed record isn’t likely accomplished with this Mercedes, it is undoubtedly confident and capable, still by today’s standards; a far cry from a rolling obstacle. Wherever you want to go, this car will take you there, comfortably and with ease, effortlessly at speeds exceeding 120kph (75mph).

A further testament to the condition of this car is its “Veteran Vehicle Status” awarded by the DOT after extensive inspection. From the official website:

“Veteran vehicles must comply with the original design and be visually and technically in perfect condition. Veteran vehicles are usually used in traffic only on special occasions or to prevent damages incurred from long-term parking. Owners of such vehicles go to great lengths at considerable expense to preserve these artefacts of engineering history. Traces of use that have occurred despite careful handling and good care, as well as expertly executed repairs are permitted.”

It is with a heavy heart that I list this gem in the first place. My tenure as its caretaker is cut short for personal reasons. I hope that someone equally keen on these cars will take my role as its custodian. This is about taking on the duty of caring for a piece of motoring history, preserving it for future generations, and to drive it, enjoy it, to let people marvel at its sight. Let this beauty decelerate a hectic day, entrance you with its charm and turn the journey into the destination.

I’m happy to answer any questions you have about this Mercedes.

All possible shipping and importation charges are the buyers responsibility. Luckily, classic cars are often subject to tax advantages and reduced import duties.

For instance, Germany reduces the VAT from 19% to 7% and waives import duties entirely. The car easily meets the 25-year rule for the U.S. and the 15-year rule for Canada. Any information you may need for your shipping agent, don’t hesitate to contact me.

The seller tells the story much better than I can, but the short of it is the car was bought new by the Swiss ambassador to the United Nations and lovingly kept by him until his death in 2008. From there, the car went directly to his chauffeur until now that the car is up for sale. Even with over 90,000 miles, the condition is wonderful with lots of cadmium plating in the engine and under the car still shining bright. The interior is more of the same with real tobacco leather that looks like it has a fifth of the miles that it does. Outside, the dark blue paint shines extremely well for being nearly 50 years-old and could fool anyone as being a recent repaint. This is why these W108/W109s are so satisfying. A half a century old and it still impresses. I’m sold.

The prices however reflects the condition. Yes, this car is in Switzerland where a slice of cheese cost $17, but it looks like the seller of this car is expecting this to be a worldwide sale. $35,000 is dangerously close to 6.3 territory, but I can’t really argue this price. Finding a car with this story and this condition will be is a rare feat, so you should probably be prepared to pay for it. I have a feeling that ultimately someone will.

Feature Listing: 1962 Mercedes-Benz 220SEb Coupe

Last week I went on and on about a beautiful 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE and how it was quintessential classic Mercedes styling and durability. Timeless is a word that maybe comes to mind, but no car person will ever look at that the W108 and not be able to tell it was the late 1960s or early 1970s. Maybe that is a part of the aura around it. It’s a car old enough to have grand children but still water skied on weekends when the knees were feeling good. The W108 and W109 didn’t wither away, they felt every bit as good as they did forty years ago if you kept up on them. Today, I wanted to look at another car that came just before that 1970 280SE and still has that classic Mercedes feel, the W111 220SEb Coupe.

The 220SEb was the top of the range W111 Coupe that featured Bosch fuel injection as opposed to twin Solex carburetors found on the 220Sb. As you might have guessed, everything improved when fuel injection was added to the 2.2 liter M127. More horsepower, better acceleration, and the ability to gobble up miles. This 1962 220SEb up for sale in Chicago looks like it did exactly that. This W111 Coupe isn’t a pickled show car or museum piece. It was enjoyed thoroughly.

VIDEO WITH LISTING

VIN: 773-273-82578868

We purchased this beautiful W111 out of Omaha Nebraska, where it had remained with the same owner since 1985. As the owner was elderly, the car sat for the last few years of his ownership. Over the course of the last couple months, we’ve been going through the car, servicing it and adding mileage when the weather cooperates. Since purchasing the car, we’ve done the following services: Replace fuel tank, repair fuel pump, replace all fuel lines, replace ignition coil wire, repair fuel pressure regulator, replace fuel filter, bleed clutch system, check brakes, and change oil/filter. The tires, while in decent shape, are due for replacement, so the next owner should address that before embarking on any long hauls. The car will come with a good bit of documentation, including the original manual, receipts for a complete engine and transmission rebuild in 1978, as well as receipts for the work we’ve performed this year. Please inquire for scans of the receipts if interested. We were able to get a hold of a previous owner who had the car in the late 70s, and he informed us that the car spent the 60s with the original owner in Colorado before moving to the Omaha area in the early 70s. As it sits now, this is a nice driver-level 220SE Coupe with the desirable 4spd manual on the floor. A sweet, sweet car.

Exterior:
– Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is covered in detail. Blemishes are all shown close up and under direct sunlight.
– Older respray, and the car does appear to have always been black. The paint cleans up nicely, but isn’t top-notch. There are a few small spots where dust is visible under the paint, most notably on the roof, and a couple other spots where the paint shows its age. Again, please defer to the video.
– Front and rear chrome bumpers aren’t very good. Particularly the passenger’s side of the rear bumper. All the other polished trim, like the window/windshield surrounds, rocker trim, grille, etc, are very nice.
– Wheels are in great shape. Hubcaps show no curb rash or damage. Tires, as mentioned, should be replaced sooner rather than later.
– Glass is all clear and crack-free. Lights and signals are all functional.

Interior:
– Interior in these cars is just gorgeous. Wood within the dash is good for the most part; there is a crack on the passenger’s side where it meets the windshield, see photo/video. Driver’s seat appears to have been reupholstered at some point, as it is in great shape and the passenger’s shows some wear. Upholstery work was done in the correct material and it matches the rest of the interior. Headliner is clean and tight.
– Odometer reads 56455 and is functional. While odometer reads 56k miles, we are not positive as to actual mileage. The car wears a 200,000km badge on the front grille, so it’s certainly possible that this car saw some miles in Europe before being imported and having the speedo swapped out. Other gauges are also functional.
– Becker Mexico is not functional, but we do hear an audible tick when turning the knob. Sounds like the speakers are good.
– Blower motor and heat are functional. AC is not. Lights, signals, wipers, dash lights, and interior lights are all functional as well.
– Headliner is nice and intact. Steering wheel is in great shape, with no cracks and just a couple small blemishes.
– Carpet appears to be original. A bit tired on the driver’s floor, as to be expected.

Under the Hood / Underbody:
– Frame is solid. Very much structurally sound. There is a tiny bit of rust inside the passenger front rocker, as visible in the underbody photos. Aside from that, quite good underneath.
– The car runs and drives very well. It starts first turn, idles cool/steady/quietly, pulls through the rev range with impressive gusto, shifts smoothly, and brakes straight and effectively. There aren’t any concerning creaks or squeaks from the suspension over bumps or through turns; the car feels solid and confidence inspiring. As mentioned earlier, tires should be done sooner rather than later, but the car is in good running and driving condition.
– The 220SEb was the top of the range at the time, coming standard with Bosch fuel injection and producing 120hp at 4800rpm. This car can be driven and enjoyed as-is, or, with it’s very desirable spec, would serve as an excellent candidate for a high-level restoration.

With any further questions, requests, or to discuss purchasing, please reach out to Jake at 773-273-8257.

If you want to dip your toe into the classic Mercedes coupe market, this might be the car for you. The sky is the limit when it comes to coupes from this era and they can hit multiple six-figures before you can blink. The interesting thing about this specific car is that it is a European-spec coupe with its much nicer one-piece headlights that are pricey and tough to find if you wanted to convert your U.S.-spec car. As you might have seen, this is not a concours example but it is not presented as such. It has been well-loved, but the good news is because it is tough as nails, it probably has a bunch of life still left in it. If you wanted to tidy up some things and drive as-is, it is completely presentable. If you wanted to go a bit further, it wouldn’t be a bad investment.

Values of these cars have been steady for many years and they probably aren’t getting any cheaper, nor are they making more. If you were looking for a black one to play with and slowly refresh at the same time, step right up. The enjoyment of refreshing this car might be just as fun as driving it because it is so satisfying. I really hate to go with the terrible cliché of ”they don’t make them like they used to” but if that ever applied, these cars fall under that category.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

The new second-generation W463 (Not called the W464. Don’t get me started on this.) Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens have been have been on dealer lots for a few months now and as expected, they are selling so fast that the lot attendants don’t even have a chance to swirl the paint up by trying to “wash” them. They’ve been selling at a rapid pace because in addition to looking nice and fresh, they ride more like a new Range Rover than a military vehicle from the 1970s. This however has the last of the first-generation W463 not selling so hot because even with offering a little discount on them, a person who can spend $140,000 on something can probably spend $150,000 to get something that is much better. Mercedes knew this, so they tarted up the last of the first generation cars in fancy paint and today’s vehicle is exactly that. This 2018 G63 AMG is painted in Agate Green that is a color I can say I’ve never seen before. Normally I love green, but I’m not sure about this color on this hulking SUV. This color on a 911? Absolutely. On a G63? Well, what do you think?

Kudos to Mercedes for offering a cool color like this on the G, as unexpected as it is. Yes, you’ll pay for it at $6,500, but at least it is an option. I’ve gone back and forth about it and I think I would want to see it on a real road before I make a judgement on it and not inside some staged studio. On the inside, things get even wilder with two-tone tan inserts on the seats and the door panels. As you might have guessed, this was a $5,000 option as well. I can say I really like that, but the entire interior seems very dated compared to what is offered now with the new G.

Showing just 48 miles, this G63 is still crazy expensive at $140,000. Funny thing is, the sticker price was $157,000. So either someone took a giant bath on buying this thing and driving it around town for a day or this independent dealer got a massive discount from Mercedes to take it off the lot. Either way, I’m surely not spending $140,000 on it. Maybe in about 20 years I’ll take the plunge.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SEL

I’m always curious to take a look at pre-merger Mercedes-Benz AMG cars when they come up for sale and today’s car, a 1993 600SEL, is one of those cars I don’t see all that often. Normally, when these V12 W140 cars made their way to AMG or another tuning house like Renntech or Brabus, the factory 6.0 liter would be converted to a 7.0, 7.2 or 7.3 liter. It only made sense, as the M120 is as a robust a V12 as they come, and the profit margins that were probably built into these conversions when these cars were still new made it all worth it. I’ve looked a S70 AMG before with a dubious past and like today’s car, it was actually built at AMG Japan. The thing is, this isn’t a S70; it is still just a 600SEL. So what is going on here?

Just in to our inventory is this incredible rare 1993 Mercedes Benz 600SEL AMG that has the vaunted and powerful 6.0L V12 AMG engine that is rated at 394HP. This is a true mid-merger AMG that was modified by AMG before Mercedes completely owned AMG and this particular car was never sold in the USA by Mercedes.

This W140 600SEL AMG is in excellent condition throughout with only 74k miles and this high horsepower big body Mercedes recently underwent a multi stage exterior detail as well as interior detail and comes with the following AMG modifications:

– AMG body kit (front spoiler, rear valance, and side skirts)
– AMG 2-piece Mono-block wheels
– AMG springs
– AMG wood treatment

We have just completed the following service on this 600SEL AMG:

– New Valve cover gasket
– New Spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and Oil service

.
This is a great opportunity to own a rare big body W140 AMG that was never sold here, very few of these exist in the world and very few are in this condition. Comes with extensive service records, spare keys and manuals. Trade-ins are welcome and we can offer financing and extended warranties on almost anything that we sell, contact us if interested. Car comes with all import work already completed and comes with a clean Ohio title. We can arrange shipping to most parts of the world so we welcome international requests.

From what I can see here, this 600SEL left the Mercedes factory in Germany and went to AMG Japan where it underwent a nice outfitting of all the AMG bits except the actual engine. So this car has the amazing 2-piece AMG wheels, the sleek body kit and enough wood inside of it to build a basketball court with, but no 7 or more liters under the hood. Disappointing? A little. Does it make sense? I suppose. Mercedes-Benz and AMG were never public with prices for these kind of things, because if you were a person buying a V12 S-Class and then directly sending it to AMG make it even better, price tags aren’t much of a worry to you. In terms of price saving on this, I’m sure the bill was much cheaper considering you just had to pay for some wheels, body work and a lot of wood compared to paying a team of people to pull a V12 out of a car, rebuild it, then reinstall it. This makes all the sense in the world why it is priced the way it is today.

Normally, a real S70 or S73 is well north of $50,000 and usually hovers $75,000, if not more. This car in Ohio has a price tag of $35,000. Still crazy money for a W140 of all things, but just slightly less crazy. The math on this says a decent V12 W140 will set you back $10,000, so you are paying $25,000 for some AMG goodies and the aura that goes with it. Even as someone who adores these cars from this era, that is just too much money to me. If I had unlimited funds, sure, give me it. But the realist in me says if you are someone who can spend $35,000 on a super niche car that appeals to a very small amount of people, you aren’t playing in this league. Then again, I’ve seen crazier things happen.

2014 Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet Final Edition 200

To commemorate the end of the G-Class Cabriolet production, Mercedes-Benz decided to make a special version called the ”Final Edition 200” that was slated to be ultimate G cabriolet. They grabbed the wheels from the G63/G65, put some fancy leather work inside, added a some badges, and pitched it to all their best buyers. All 200 sold out before production even started, and those buyers probably weren’t too happy to hear a few years later that this wasn’t the end of the G cabriolet run thanks to the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet. Granted, this was the last two-door G Cabrio, but still. Today, one of the 200 is up for sale Miami thanks to some federalization help from Europa International. However, this price on this G probably isn’t what you would guess. Are you sitting down?

2014 Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet Final Edition 200

Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room. This thing is $450,000. I couldn’t even find what the original MSRP on these were because they were all pre-sold, but I’m willing to bet they weren’t $450,000. These were never sold in North America, so naturally I started poking around Europe to see if I could actually find one for sale there and as luck would have it, there is an example in Germany for €238.000. Nearly $268,000 is a still insanely expensive, but a far cry from $450,000. This interesting this is, W463 G Cabriolets are already super rare as it is so exclusivity here in a normal example isn’t a problem. You literally are paying nearly twice for something with some different stitching on the leather and some door sills that say ”Final Edition 200.”

Will this car sell? Seeing as it is in Miami, probably. Everyone is super hot for the new G-Wagen, but I doubt we will see a Cabriolet version of that any time soon, if ever. If you want to cruise South Beach with the top down, pack the sunscreen and go wild. Just don’t expect people to understand that your driving a nearly half a million dollar vehicle. Then again, some people might like it that way.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.0

I always felt the Mercedes-Benz W201 190E didn’t and still doesn’t get the respect or fanfare they deserve. Outside of the 16v models, there aren’t hoards of people out there clamoring for them like we have now with the E30 BMW. I know this is a little bit of tough comparison, as the E30 was offered in both coupe and manual transmission form, but the 190E is still a relatively nice car for what it is. It certainly isn’t ugly, and the fit and finish was above average compared to the majority of cars from this era. Still, these cars were used and abused for going on three decades now so finding a non-16v model in exception shape isn’t an easy task. However, this 1991 190E 2.0 up for sale the UK seems to have survived all these abuse a cheap Mercedes usually is subject to.

Finished in Brilliant Silver with a superb blue cloth interior, J142 EGU is a fine example of the 190E that has clearly been cherished since new and has one of the most thorough maintenance records I have ever encountered.

The car was originally delivered to a Mr W Barnard, who then passed the car to his brother, Mr D Barnard, who kept the car until 2010 when it was sold to a friend of mine, who lived nearby in London. During the brother’s ownership, it was serviced exclusively by Mercedes Bromley, and it was a regular visitor to their workshop for everything as trivial as brake light bulb replacements. I have the invoices for every penny they spent in their ownership, the stamped service book and every MOT since 1997. However, since 2010, the TLC really racked up. Everything that has been done to the car since has been documented, with over 20 records of maintenance between 71,000 miles in 2011 and 117,000 miles in 2018. All work carried out during this period is backed up by a ring binder folder full of parts invoices, almost exclusively from Mercedes Benz.

In the last couple of years, the entire cooling system has been renewed, new injectors have been fitted along with new transmission oil cooler pipes, suspension refresh and a host of other work. In fact, a testimony to the maintenance of this car is its MOT history, which aside from a couple of bulbs, a ball joint in 2013 and a blowing exhaust in 2007 – all replaced, is un-blemished.

Prior to sale the car has received a full service, including oil and filter, brake fluid and transmission fluid and filter – however the fluids that came out were almost as clean as the fluid that replaced them! Joyous. It has also had its 15-hole alloy wheels powder coated and freshly shod with Dunlop tyres. Removing the wheels reveals exceptionally fresh wheel arches, no corrosion to the suspension components and perfect wheel arches. Not only has this car been over-serviced, but I would doubt it’s ever been allowed to get properly dirty. It certainly hasn’t seen a lot of road salt. It also has MOT until March 2020, with no advisories.

In accordance with the underside, the bodywork is all in fine fettle: straight with no parking dings or nasty marks and no rust. Brilliant Silver suits the W201 so well – my first one was this colour, so I’m biased, but it shows every line and detail that makes this not only Bruno Sacco’s finest design; but the most perfectly proportioned saloon car ever penned.

Inside is reasonably well equipped, on top of the refinements that make 1991 cars perhaps the nicest 190Es – (Full Zebrano Console, ABS and body coloured mirrors as standard on the 2.0) and with four power windows, power sunroof, Outside Temperature Gauge, Sportline 390mm Steering wheel, rear headrests and dealer fitted Pioneer Radio / Cassette with working Hirschmann power antenna. The seats are in excellent condition, the dash and air vent surrounds are unusually free of cracks, the map nets have not sagged, the needles are nicely orange, and the carpets have been covered by Mercedes over-mats from new.

On the road, a good 190E 2.0 is all the car you ever need. It is capable of cruising at 100mph all day long, will return a comfortable average of 30mpg (in my experience) and ride better than anything Mercedes Benz excuse themselves to sell these days. This one lives up to that in all areas and is a true delight to drive.

I have described the car as accurately as possible and have gone to as much effort as I can to ensure that this car is prepared to the highest possible standard within my means for its new owner, who I’m sure will enjoy many happy miles in it. This really is either a perfect starter classic, or daily car. It will almost certainly never let you down and will always carry a distinct quality and identity in a bland sea of eco-boxes and hateful SUVs.

If you require any more information, or to arrange a viewing and test drive please call me on 07921252639. P/X considered and thanks for reading – more photos can be found at the following link:

It’s really tough to find anything wrong with this car. Even with 118k miles shown, this example looks like it has about a third of that. It is nearly flawless inside, outside and under the hood. Kudos to the seller for even detailing the engine for the extra ”step back in time” looks that this car has going for it. As much we look at the W201 as the “cheap” Mercedes from decades ago, you can see why people would pony up the sizable $36,000 ($66,000 today) for these in 1992. The fit and finish look excellent and compared to all of the other compact cars roaming the streets in the early ’90s, this one was surely quite handsome.

The $6,300 asking price had me going back and forth a little bit. Surely it is a lot for a non-16v 190E, but if you want a super clean example, that price isn’t all that bad. I’m sure there are some people out there who loved these cars when they came out but couldn’t afford it at the time, so this one seems awfully temping and is exactly the kind of buyer they are looking for. Would I drive this car? Absolutely. Spend $6,300 on it? I think I’d rather put it towards something else.

1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD

One of the more interesting facts about one of the cars I own, a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD, is that they were only made for the United States and Canada. That means there are no “Euro-spec” W116 SDs running around Europe or parked in an alley somewhere in Albania. A cool little piece of car trivia, but that also means that all of the 300SDs produced were fitted with giant 5 mph bumpers and quad headlights instead of the sleek European bumpers and glass headlights. Of course that doesn’t mean people haven’t got creative. As you might have realized, this is exactly what is going on with today’s car, a 1980 300SD up for sale in Michigan. This OM617-powered tank has all the little goodies and it surely looks like whoever owned this car had quite an affinity for it.

As mentioned, at some point in time the car shed its ugly headlight and bumpers and went for pieces that are far more attractive. This is a job that can be done without much issue, but the headlights aren’t exactly plug and play and require a little creative wiring to get the job done. I actually bought a nice pair of these glass headlights once, but upon picking them up on my front porch I noticed they sounded like someone playing Jingle Bells inside the box and that project was dead before it even got started. The rest of the car looks really nice although I’m not too sure why the car uses 235/60 tires instead of the normal 205/70. 215 is really the widest you should go on this chassis as the suspension geometry changes a little when you go too wide and the ride can be compromised. Inside, I’m even more impressed as the rear seats look fully stuffed and firm as the W116 has a nasty habit of shedding all its synthetic fibers and leaving nothing behind but a cover and a metal frame.

How much? This car has an asking of $11,000 that makes me pause. The W116 is far from loved and flies under the radar quite a bit. Prices have remained pretty flat for as long as I can remember and will probably stay that way. You can find a handful of decent examples for probably half this price as there aren’t a whole ton of people out there searching for a these or dying to get their hands on one. However, if you are someone who is, this might one of the better examples I’ve seen come up in a long time.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

A little over a month ago I took a look at a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. On the surface, a 1991 300SE isn’t all that special, until you noticed the Bornite Metallic paint of course. I went into a little detail on why that paint matters and the data doesn’t lie when you see the selling prices of two nearly identical cars with one painted in Bornite and one painted in a more common color. Well wouldn’t you know, the next generation S-Class, the W140, had the privilege of carrying on this color as well. This 1992 300SE checks in with a fair amount of miles with nearly 185,000, but don’t kid yourself thinking you are going to get a deal on it. Also, there is one other problem if you want to own this car. It is in Germany.

How I wish this car was stateside. Outside of the S600, the pre-facelift 300SE is my favorite iteration of the W140. The silky smooth M104 with the contrasting lower cladding and the tiny little parking poles that extend from the rear panels. I’m all for it. It would have to take a nearly perfect example for me to actually buy a 300SE, and this one is just that. Yes, it has some miles, but it hardly looks the part. All that is missing is the hood star, but that’s an easy fix if there ever was one.

The price of of €12.999 ($14,610) is about what I expected when I laid eyes on this one. Those in the know realize that a Bornite pulls a premium on any car, with this one being no different. Would I pay it right now? Well, probably not. Just under $15,000 is a lot for a 300SE. A Bornite S600? Yes. This car being in Germany probably skews the pricing a little, but whoever is selling this is no fool. They know what they have, as obscure as it is, and are asking a premium for it.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

There aren’t many modern cars like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss. I’ve gone over the history of this wild machine before, but the short of it is they are based off the SLR but with crazy styling and two very tiny pieces of glass that basically do nothing. Only 75 examples were created to be sold the general public for actual legal road use. By “general public”, I mean current SLR owners who had to pony up $1,000,000 for the privilege to buy one of these. After purchasing them, most were stashed away in collections and very rarely see the light of day let alone be driven on a road because believe it or not, really rich people don’t like to eat bugs. However, this example going up for bid at RM Sotheby’s in Italy has over 8,400 km on the odometer. Someone drove this car over 5,000 miles!

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss at RM Sotheby’s

Year: 2009
Model: SLR McLaren Stirling Moss
VIN: N/A
Engine: 5.4 liter supercharged V8
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 8,400 km (5,219 mi)
Price: Reserve Auction

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show; a lightweight speedster variant of the SLR as potent in performance as it is arresting in appearance. Just 75 examples were built, offered exclusively to existing SLR owners as a modern homage to the exquisite 300 SLR that Stirling Moss campaigned to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

Rather like the 300 SLR, nearly all the creature comforts of the car it is based on were sacrificed in the pursuit of performance, aesthetics and extreme driver (and passenger) enjoyment. This even included the windscreen and roof, which not only adds to the visual drama but ramps up the intensity of the driving experience ten-fold. Indeed, when Car Magazine road tested the car in 2009, they likened the experience of full throttle acceleration to “standing on the wingtip of a 747” and sighted the 0-100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds and top speed of 354 km/h achievable only by those “whose neck muscles can bear it”. This level of performance is accomplished by utilising the same 641 bhp, 5.5-litre supercharged AMG V-8 that powers the SLR 722 Edition and pairing it with 200 kg of weight savings; achieved by adoption of the speedster style as well as the extensive use of carbon fibre for the bodywork, underside and new aerodynamic package.

This fantastic Sterling Moss edition left the factory in December 2009 as a European-specification example delivered to Luxemburg. Since then, it has covered just under 8,400 km from new. It has had a total of two owners and presents in pristine condition, specified in the special-order colour of Antimony Grey Crystal over a spartan, yet luxurious interior of black leather, enhanced with Silver Arrow 300 SL red trims and accents. It is truly breath-taking in its appearance.

Like all cars of this type, it has benefitted from being regularly exercised and enjoyed during its life and is notable for its participation in the 2012 Mercedes-Benz 1000 Miglia challenge. Naturally, it has always been looked after by Mercedes-Benz and it will be offered fully serviced and with numerous accessories including goggles in their original bags, hats, tonneau covers, and service manuals; ready for its next owner to enjoy to the full.

Acquisition opportunities of cars like the SLR Stirling Moss are rare and the visceral driving experience it offers is unique. Equally stunning as a stationary piece of art as it is enthralling as a hyper-car, it would make a wonderful addition to even the finest collections or indeed the ultimate weekend toy.

According to the story, this car was delivered new to Luxembourg (hey now) and a lot of these miles were done on the Mercedes-Benz Mille Miglia Challenge which is a 1,600 km grand tour around Italy. How quaint. From there, it sounds like it went to a second owner for more miles. Still, I don’t know how you rack up that many miles in a car setup like this. The good news is that the goggles and tonneau cover are included, just encase you wanted to go for another jaunt around the Italian countryside.

How much? Well, Sotheby’s has this car guided at €1.850.000 – €2.200.000. That isn’t as bad as I expected because rumor has it that these usually trade around €2.700.000 range, but I suppose this car has all these miles and isn’t as highly sought after as the other 74 cars with a few hundred miles on them. I’m curious to see what this one does when it goes up for auction at the end of May as you have to be a pretty hardcore Mercedes fan to spend this kind of dough for even as rare as something like this.

Roll the Dice: 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL500

I must be getting old, because it seems like every year that passes my tolerance for “project cars” gets smaller and smaller. When I had a bunch of free time, I had no problem messing around for countless hours on one of my cars. Now? Get this job finished as fast as possible and be done with it. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my cars, but they wear my patience thin sometimes. This doesn’t mean I still don’t browse for cheap cars constantly and run across some that might not take all that much to have a decent example for way less than market value. Today’s car, a 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL500 up for sale in California, might be that. Looking at the price, I thought it was going to be a total basket case that didn’t run or looked like a nice family of mongooses took up residence in the interior. Much to my surprise, that isn’t the case and this car actually has some extra goodies on it as well.

From what I can see, this R129 is a little beat up on the front lip, the seat has a split in the seam, the condition of the top is unknown, and it has 148,000 miles. The good news is that someone probably loved this car a lot at one point in time as it has a Renntech exhaust and very expensive 18″ HRE wheels. Those are far from cheap parts and surely ones you don’t purchase by mistake. All of this seems like good news so far, but given the price, I’m very wary.

This seller is only asking $5,900 which is cheap even for California. I’m willing to bet those HREs were close to $5,900 when new so the math on this looks pretty good as it sits. If you don’t care about cosmetics, this is a lot of SL for that price if everything checks out. The thing is, I would bet a lot of money that everything is not going to check out. You get what you pay for, and I’m willing to bet this is the case for the SL. If not, well, congratulations on your stellar deal! Just make sure to find some lugnuts for those wheels first.

2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

If you told me I had to go spend every last penny of my money that wasn’t used to sleep or eat, I’d probably go buy a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Why? It has everything. Power, looks, exclusivity, and most importantly, Gullwing doors. In all seriousness, this car is a monster. My editor Carter instructed in one at a supercar event and the car looks like it was ready to eat every single cone for lunch then move onto eating the light poles next. This isn’t a re-bodied SL63 with some fancy doors. This is a exotic super car. It was first Mercedes-Benz automobile designed and built from scratch entirely by AMG. It had the the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine at the time. They had to nail this car and they did. In all honestly, I probably couldn’t handle this car at anything more than 50% of what it is capable of. It’s too much. One of my daily drivers is a 240D for heaven’s sake. All this still isn’t stopping me from saving every penny though.

VIN: WDDRJ7HA6BA005264

Mileage: 18,610 mi
Price: $153,900

We’re proud to present our stunning 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG finished in Obsidian Black over Black/Anthracite Leather. We purchased this SLS from a local client who had pampered the car during their ownership and kept up with all recommended maintenence and services. This example is simply a blast to drive – with it’s razor sharp steering, doors that go up, a fire breathing 6.3 liter naturally aspirated hand-built AMG M159 engine pumping out 563 horsepower & 480 lb-feet of torque, coupled to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissoon, and that unmistakable AMG exhaust note, this “Modern Gullwing” is one head turning supercar!

We don’t say that lightly either! The SLS is easily a supercar in our books for a myriad of reasons – my personal favorite being that the entire engine is situated behind the front wheels! This, along with the razor sharp steering, results in an extremely capable and stellar handling driving experience. Further evidence comes from the rear-mounted 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle, which is connected to the motor via a 5 and a half feet carbon fiber driveshaft weighing in at a modest 8 lbs.

This clean Carfax example features rear-view camera, automatic dimming interior and exterior mirrors, electric folding mirrors, Black/Anthracite MB Exclusive Leather (Code: 501A), AMG spoke wheels, AMG aluminum trim pieces, auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, comfort & sport drive modes, and more!

Unlike with the original Gullwing, where one had to slide over a wide sill because of the space-frame structure underneath, it’s very easy to access the SLS’s cabin. Ingress & egress are no problem for drivers of any size.

Press the starter button illuminated in red on the center console, and the now-familiar, AMG-designed 6.2-liter V-8 awakens with an angry roar. The idle is deep, and the revs rise and fall race-car swiftly. The M159 engine comes with an all-new magnesium intake, forged pistons in place of cast ones, and optimized tubular exhaust headers. The engineers also switched from a wet sump to a dry arrangement, allowing the engine to be mounted lower to benefit the SLS’s center of gravity. Elaborating on the power figures noted earlier, the maximum output of 563 horsepower is delivered at 6800 rpm, and peak torque of 479 pound-feet comes at 4750 rpm.

The SLS is also the first Mercedes to use a new dual-clutch seven-speed transmission that was developed in conjunction with Getrag. Perfectly executed blips of the throttle during downshifts not only make the shifts smooth, their bark could also break any nearby glass.

There are also four driving modes to select via the toggle knob which Mercedes named the “Drive-Unit” button on the center console, and these range from comfortable to extremely sporty. “C” stands for “controlled efficiency,” in which the car sets off in second gear. “S” (sport) rips off shifts that are 20 percent faster, while “S+” (sport plus) is again 20 percent quicker. “M” (manual) is fully 50 percent faster than “C.” A launch-control system is also equipped.

Oh boy do I want this car. I’m very much against black as a color on my cars if I can help it as it only looks clean for the few seconds after you wash it and shows every single little paint flaw, but on a car like this, I’m probably driving it my 2,000 miles a year. It is never seeing rain and I can live with some dust on it. This example probably has seen a fair amount of dust with seeing as it has 19,000 miles. In my eyes, this is the kind of car you want. This wasn’t some collector piece with 2,800 miles, this car was used. It has been vetted and is thoroughly broken in. All that ideally leads to a better deal for you as well. At least in theory.

The asking price for this example is just under $154,000. Looking at some past sales, this seems about $5,000-10,000 too high. A SLS in that price range right now seems to be well under the 10,000-mile mark and has the expensive ($12,500!) Carbon Ceramic brakes, which this car does not. Looking around at the seller’s other offerings for sale, it does seem that they are a bit optimistic on all their asking prices, so take it as you will.  If you had to buy this car for $154,000 would I be appalled? No, not really. These cars have settled in this $150,000 range and seems to be staying there and maybe even creeping up a little. I don’t see any other Gullwing Mercedes on the horizon as AMG seems to be fully involved in making 22 different versions of the AMG GT. I just hope my income doubles and these stay the same price. Maybe find a nice bridge to live under as well.

2006 Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG Estate

I don’t think a lot of people saw this coming, but the Mercedes-Benz AMG estates from the mid-2000s are firmly holding their values. The results don’t lie, none have traded hands under the low $20,000 range that I can find and most are above $30,000. Great news if you own one, maybe not so great if you want to buy one. Although if the values keep holding strong, I guess buying one isn’t the worst idea ever as you are basically parking your money. However, there is another way to get your big V8 AMG wagon fix if you don’t want to pony up $30,000.

The only W203 worth buying, the C55 AMG, actually was made in wagon form in 2005 and 2006. They didn’t make many of them, less than 2,000, and exactly zero came to the United States. Not exactly a common car to find and even less so as it is rumored a lot of them went to Japan and other Asian countries. However, you can still find a handful for sale in Germany at any given time and they actually look pretty darn cool. We just have to wait until 2030 to import one to the United States. Canada however, get your chequebooks ready!

I hate on the W203 pretty hard and deservedly so, but I am all about these. I think the longer nose fitted to the C55s to fit the M113 engine works really well with the long roof and is finished off great with the split 5-spoke wheels. The quad exhaust lets everyone know you are packing something as well as the massive brakes. This example is badgeless, so the stealth is extra factor is really there and unless you took a really close look at this car, you’d think it was just an old wagon. Everything is totally the same from the regular C55 sedan, so maintenance and upkeep is nothing crazy and much less the supercharged and finicky E-Class versions. If you wanted a diet E55/E63 estate, this is what to get.

As you might of guessed, these do carry a premium over the sedans, but not nearly as crazy as the Es. €14.999 ($16,808) is the asking for this car with 118,000 miles and dare I say that is a good deal. It would take a lot to keep me away from one of these if they made it to the US but I’m guessing they wouldn’t be the same price as this one as this one because I wouldn’t be alone in wanting one. So if you are one of our Canadian readers, be on the lookout for these next year. However you probably won’t see them in the winter.

GCFSB Alumnus: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300CE

One of the biggest challenges we face when contemplating cars from a distance is that it’s difficult to judge a book by its cover. We’re at the mercy of the images and what the seller is willing to disclose in order to form a judgement. I’d like to think that most of the time we get it right and spot items that are perhaps warning signs to a larger problem. But, perhaps inevitably, we definitely have gotten some wrong. That brings us to today’s car, which Andrew wrote up back in 2016:

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300CE

Andrew felt at the time that it was a very clean example with a reasonable price. And, as luck would have it, one of our readership took the plunge and bought the car without a PPI. But it didn’t go quite as one would hope the story would, as it turned out there were some undisclosed problems which popped up. Today the car is back for sale with a lot of the heavy lifting done and some more stories to add to its pages:

Beautiful 1993 300CE Cabriolet
New paint (2018)
Zero rust
All maintenance and repair records
Convertible hydraulics replaced in 2015

I bought this car from a southern California owner on eBay in 2016 and had it shipped to me in enclosed transport. It has been a second (sometimes third) car for me. It is a 3-season cruiser, kept in a garage throughout the snow season. I’m selling because I now have a W123 Coupe to take the place of this W124 convertible, and it’s time to let her go. (Sooner than later — which is why I’m going to bite the bullet and sell with a $0 starting price and no reserve.)

Listed for $79,000 new ($139,710 adjusted for inflation).
I paid $12,000 two years ago.
I’ve invested over $6000 into repairs and maintenance since then.
I am hopeful that I’ll get half of my investment back — but that’s up to the bidders.

Why so inexpensive?

Because the car has a few remaining needs. Because buying a classic Mercedes is a crap shoot, and and I’m a weak better. I console myself that it’s a common story: I don’t have the patience to chase down new fixes; I’ve already bought this car’s replacement; I don’t have the patience to list it on Bring a Trailer; I’m ready to move on. I’ve spent $18K on a car that is worth $13K fixed up —and it’s not even all fixed up. So I will sell it at a substantial loss to a new owner who will spend a little time and money and get a great car at a discount.

Obviously we don’t like to hear stories that have gone south, and Doug’s purchase resulted in a few hefty bills trying to correct neglect from prior owners. As a result, I think it’s quite safe to say that the car is in better shape today than it was in 2016; despite that, his interest has waned and a replacement occasional car sourced, and he’s opted to move on. For the buyer, that means a beautiful 300CE in great shape, but admittedly by the seller this time with some needs. I’m sure if you’re very interested, Doug with be happy to fill you in on the punch list. But unlike what he faced in 2016, you have some peace of mind in a forthright seller who’s been through the car and is offering it at no reserve, letting the market dictate the price.

I sympathize with Doug; in many ways, it was the same story I had when we bought our E61 530xi Sport Wagon. It was a great car with some flaws, many of which I fixed. But as the bills mounted I became disenchanted with ownership and when a more fun replacement came along I was ready for a change.

Doug’s takeway? This car is a great reminder on why to do a PPI, especially so on an older car. If you’re looking for a perfect 300CE this may not be it. But if you’re looking for the right affordable enthusiast-owned car to take to the next level, this could be the one this time around!

2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG IWC Ingenieur

Cars and watches go together like peanut butter and jelly. Naturally this leads to car and watch collaborations in every shape and size. Usually it involves sticking a watch face inside the car and then the watch manufacturer making a line of watches with the cars logo on it. Today, we have exactly that. This 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG is an IWC Ingenieur edition of which only 55 examples were ever produced. When you think about how many cars Mercedes probably makes in a year, only making 55 of something is a really small number. The short of it is they all are painted in dark titanium grey metallic with matte titanium trim, and on the inside you got the IWC Ingenieur inscription on the gauge cluster clock. That’s about it. This was purely a cosmetic change and unless you know this was an IWC Ingenieur edition, you’d have no idea that this was even a special edition. Maybe this is a good thing?

The car drives perfect and looks even better. You can contact me for more information about the car. The price is 24k slightly negotiable, LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY. This is a PRIVATE OWNER CAR.

I give Mercedes credit, this is a really good looking car. It would of been very easy to go all out like the god awful Gucci Fiat 500 but thankfully they dialed it back and just added a logo in the gauge cluster and center console. This specific example looks well taken care of and thankfully the owner gave it the attention it deserves. For being almost 15 years-old, the first generation CLS doesn’t look too dated like the W220 S-Class or W211 E-Class.

Believe it or not, finding a regular CLS55 AMG isn’t a very easy task. Production wasn’t massive like the E55 so they are inherently more rare than you would guess. Another problem is the actual price of this car. I know this is a 1 of 55 example, but it should have very little effect on price, if any. Asking $24,000 is many thousands too high seeing as similar mileage CLS55s are selling in the mid-teens. I know the seller is proud of this car, but you also have to be a little realistic about it. Heck, there is even another one for sale right now for half the price. The time just isn’t right for this pricing.

2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow with 4,600 miles

As much as I love cars with an insane amount of miles on them, finding older cars with just a handful of miles can be just as fun. This 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow checks in from California with just 4,600 miles on the odometer and the classic story of “bought it for the wife, she didn’t drive it”. The last Silver Arrow I looked was a SL600 with just 5,400 miles that carried a truly insane price tag of over $100,000. This SL500 actually looks like a brand new car and the seller states that all the service was done on a regular basis regardless of mileage or use. Thankfully, this car isn’t six figures like the SL600, but it still is going to set you back a boat load more than what a Silver Arrow with around 100,000 miles will run you. Are you in?

Quite possibly the lowest mileage 2002 Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow edition SL500 in existence, this car is virtually brand new with only 4,500 miles on the odometer! This 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 “Silver Arrow” is one of only 1,400 cars produced for the US market to commemorate the 1930s Silver Arrow Grand Prix racers by Mercedes-Benz. The 1,400 Silver Arrow Editions were powered by the 5.0-liter M113 V8 engine and featured a very special silver paint and 2-piece alloy wheels, as well as two-tone leather upholstery and other unique interior touches. Sold new here in California at Fletcher Jones, this car sold for $87,945 in July of 2001. To state this SL500 was well cared for is an understatement, as this car was the owner’s obsession and it shows by the meticulous showroom-like condition along with each and every document related to the car that is in a binder he kept. History:

This SL was purchased brand new from Fletcher Jones Mercedes in New Port Beach. It was owned by an engineer out of Orange County and the car was originally purchased for his wife. His wife loved the car, however she preferred to drive her 1985 Mercedes 300TD, as she felt this car was too fancy to drive. The car was then used as a “Special Occasion” car when it was not garaged. It has been exclusively serviced through Fletcher Jones of New Port Beach. The car was religiously ran the car every couple weeks and all services were kept up even though mileage was not accrued.

Silver Arrow Edition:

For 2002 Mercedes-Benz produced 1,400 very special SL500 cars for the US market to commemorate the 1930s Silver Arrow Grand Prix racers. The Silver Arrow package included two-tone black and silver leather on the seats and steering wheel, with black carpets and birds eye maple trim on the dash and center stack. All R129 Silver Arrows were finished in Silver Arrow Metallic (777) and feature unique 2-piece alloy wheels. A set of Silver Arrow-specific floor mats are fitted, and the automatic transmission selector surround is made of brushed aluminum rather than plastic. Per the seller the air conditioning and interior power features work correctly. Silver Arrow cars feature an engine-turned instrument panel, and instrumentation includes a 160 mph speedometer, tachometer, analog clock, fuel gauge, temperature gauges, and a fuel economy indicator.

Exterior:

The car is virtually brand new with no accidents or paint repair. The paint shines as bright as it did when it was new, as well as the chrome trim. The wheels are like new as well and do not have any damage. Both the factory hardtop and soft top function as they did new and are in excellent condition.

Interior:

The car was just professionally detailed and the interior is in excellent condition. The supple leather seats are like new, as is the carpet. The gorgeous Black Birdseye Walnut wood trim looks amazing and too is in excellent condition. All of the gauges and components works as they should and show no wear.

Mechanicals:

Although the car has hardly any miles on it, it has been serviced regularly. The car runs, drives and brakes as it did when new. The car had a recent oil service and is ready to be enjoyed. A new set of factory spec tires have been installed with zero miles.

This is virtually a brand new car. Buy with confidence!

The asking price of $47,000 is pretty hefty considering you can get one in the low teens with 100k more miles, but this is basically a brand new Silver Arrow. If for whatever reason you missed out on this car some 17 years ago, here is your chance. Is it worth it? To the right person I think so. Is this car going to be worth $200,000 in 10 years? I don’t believe. We are entering sort of an interesting era now that newest R129 is 17 years old, so classic status is near, but it is still can be considered a “modern” Mercedes in the grand scheme of things. There are piles and piles of them to pick from and most of them have been well used, so I’m not sure what to make of them being actual collector cars. Clearly this example is near the front of the pack for the R129, but will this set the standard for lesser cars to follow? I guess we’ll find out in due time.

1999 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG

Three door SUVs are an interesting proposition. You have all the utility a 4×4 has to offer, but with less cargo space and sometimes less seats. It clearly works as we’ve had multiple versions of them running around for decades like the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender 90, and even stuff like the Ford Bronco. Lest we forget Germany’s entry into this market, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. These have also been around for decades but as the years went on, demand for five door models has been so great that it is rare to see a W463 G-Wagen. However, today I ran across a 1999 three door in Germany and it isn’t just your normal W463, this one is one of the very few G55s made in the short body.

vehicle description
One of 3 originals built AMG in the short version !!!

CLASSIC G 55 SHORT IN GOOD ACCIDENT
CONDITION WITH NO BEULES / SCRATCHES! NEWLY PAINTED!
NEW LARGE INSPECTION !!!
THE M113 ENGINE IS AMONG THE BEST MERCEDES ENGINE, A RUNNING CAPACITY OF 500000km OR NO MORE RARE.

This is honestly the first time I’ve ever seen a three door G55 come up for sale. The thing is, this 1999 was born as a regular G500 then converted after at the factory at the AMG factory in Affalterbach. It looks it was shipped straight there for the conversion because it has all the paperwork and the gauge cluster is borrowed from the W210 E55. Under the hood is the same M113 5.4 liter but the intake setup looks similar to that of the S55, not E55/CLK55. One thing to add is that AMG logo on the engine cover is all wonky with the spacing and it actually backwards. Not sure what happened there. The wheels are also off a later G55 as you can see there is a 16″ wheel mounted on the rear door although I’m wondering how they originally fit those wheels over the big brakes in the front.

For all these unanswered questions, I’d be the first in line to spend nearly $45,000 on this thing. AMG Gs hold their values much better than regular models, and this being a rare three door makes it even better. The ad description says only 3 were ever produced, and given this is the first one I’ve seen come up for sale, I don’t find that hard to believe. However, this car is for sale in Germany and isn’t eligible for import for another four years. Such is life. My guess someone in Europe snags this thing up very soon.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet

I hate to be cliché, but the facelift W124 Cabriolets are aging very well. It is safe to call them classics now, honestly modern classics, but still old enough to rent a car at the airport. The square handsome lines will never be offensive or jarring, and the quality is nearly unmatched. Even compare it to the same model year Rolls-Royce Corniche, and you’d be crazy not to pick the Mercedes. That has been keeping prices stable for as long as I can remember and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere. This 1995 up for sale in Arizona is nothing but blue over blue on blue. I think I like it that way.

For sale is a beautiful 1995 Mercedes-Benz A124 E320 Cabriolet. The E320 Cabriolet was only offered in the USA between 1993 and 1995, with this particular being a late September 1994 production. Worldwide, between 1992-1997 only 12,000 E320 cabriolets were produced. This E320 is a two owner, carfax certified, low mileage car with only 61,000 miles! It has never been in an accident or modified. There are not many E320s like this left! This E320 was purchased new in Texas on April 13, 1995 and spent its life there until coming to Arizona when the second owner acquired the car in 2002. Included with the car are all records from the second owner that includes replacement od the wiring harness and top hydraulics. This E320 Cabriolet is in excellent condition and will surely please!

This E320 is finished in its original Midnight Blue (904) paint and is rust free. The car has always been garage kept and the blue paint is extremely vibrant and looks stunning. All of the rubber seals are still in great shape, the glass is all original, and the car retains all of its original VIN stickers. The cabriolet wears a new set of 195/65/15 Continental tires. The E320 does have some minor rock chips on the front end and a small ding on the drivers fender, nothing out of the ordinary for a 61,000 mile car. The windshield is free from any cracks, stars, or other imperfections. The Dark Blue convertible top does seals nicely and keeps the interior dry. There are no tears or rips in the top with it only showing wear in the corners from being used. Overall, the exterior of this E320 Cabriolet is in excellent condition and is truly a rare find!

The interior of this car is in superb condition! The E320 retains its original blue leather (262) interior that shows very well. The heated dual power seats are very supportive and show little to no wear on the bolsters, the carpet is in excellent condition, and the dash shows no wear at all. The door panels are in very good condition. The A/C system is original and still blows cold. The power convertible and windows operate as they should. The factory radio works as it should and is complimented by a dealer installed, when new, CD changer. Overall, the interior is in superb condition.

Mechanically the car is exceptionally sound. The M104 6cyl engine fires right up and is a blast to drive! This engine runs like a top and has plenty of power. The engine is mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission that shifts great through all the gears. The cooling system is in great operating condition and keeps the car cool in Arizona’s heat. The steering is very tight and the car handles extremely well. The brakes feel great while stopping this sports sedan with ease. Overall, this car is mechanically sound and ready to be driven and enjoyed.
This E320 is an excellent weekend toy or daily driver. This is a great chance to own an exceptional, two owner, accident free E320 Cabriolet before they skyrocket in price like the 280SE Cabriolets. The E320 is outstanding, both inside and out, and is located in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona!

I can help arrange shipping anywhere in the world and international buyers are welcome to enjoy this gorgeous Mercedes-Benz!

Like mentioned, this car is all blue. Midnight Blue paint, blue top, and blue interior. It is certainly very 90s and suits the car well, but maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. This car has just under 62k miles and while that is great, a perfect example this is not. The top has a bunch of flaws which is a bummer, and there are some rock chips on the front end. If you can live with that, no reason to dismiss this car. The good news is the wiring harness and top hydraulics were changed out, so a little peace of mind could be had there.

The price of $20,000 is about right in line for cars with this mileage. I think the price may be just a tad high, by a few grand, given the top would probably need to be replaced to get the car perfect. However, if you are in Arizona where it rains four times a year, having the top up probably isn’t a huge deal as the only time that will happen is when it is parked in the garage. Prices have stayed stable on these for the longest time, and probably aren’t going to be shooting up, or down, any time soon. Only real thing to tank these cars is condition, so keep it nice and enjoy to value.

2005 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG

Earlier this year I took a deep dive into what the R230 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG is and where it might be headed into the future. It is a car that can hold its own without a doubt, but certainly is not at the top of anyone’s list when it comes to buying a convertible for around $25,000. However, today we have a 2005 that might change everyone’s opinion at how these things look. This SL55 up for sale in California is painted in the very rare Orion Blue and shows just under 30,000 miles. The condition is nearly perfect and frankly, I love it very much. Where do I send my money?

The SL55 stunned the motoring world when introduced as 2003 model in spring of 2002.

Combining contemporary supercar power and Mercedes-Benz refinement and sophisitcation.

The SL55 became the ultimate ‘all arounder’.

You could loaf around town running errands and when in the mood, fly past 99% of automobile humanity.

It was, and still is, a stunning achievement.

And a future collectible, particularly in its original conception before the the exceptionally pure design was slowly eroded with gimmicky styling add-ons.

Car and Driver noted “493 horsepower at 6,100 RPM, 516 pound-feet of torque manifesting itself along a wonderfully flat curve from 2,650 to 4,500 rpm.

It’s the most potent factory Benz we’ve ever tested: 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, 0-100 in 10.9 seconds, the quarter mile in 13 seconds flat at 110 mph.”

Sign me up. I didn’t know a R230 could look this good in factory form. Usually I’m not one for lighter interiors, but this one just works for me. The funny thing is, if you put this color on a R129, I don’t think I’d like it. But the bigger, more rounded body of the R230, I’m all for it. It is tough to even find any flaws with this car and it makes sense having only 30,000 miles, but still it is nearly 15 years-old. Dare I say this car looks even better with the top up?

Of course you should expect a premium price for this car and in all honesty, $30,000 is pretty reasonable all things considered. $20,000 would buy you a decent example of an early R230 SL55 with some miles, so an extra $10,000 for outstanding condition and premium color seems totally fair to me. It is hard to imagine these cars even getting to the point where they will be examples you need to snap up for a collection, but if there ever was one, this is it. My guess is this one doesn’t stay for sale long.

Feature Listing: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

There is nearly always a “sweet spot” for everything. Not too little, but not too much. That perfect blend of everything. In the car world, having a sweet spot is something we’ve been chasing since Carl Benz back in ’86, 1886, made a little 3-wheel buggy that changed the world forever as we know it. From that point forward, it’s almost always been something that doesn’t make it perfect. It has to be reliable, safe, durable, make good power, look good, return good MPGs, be comfortable, and not cost a million bucks to fix. Well, good luck finding a car to do all that. Unless, of course…

The 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. The last of the W126. For some, the pinnacle of all cars. Enough power to get out of its own way, won’t kill you in a crash, gets over 20 MPG with ease, and built to last literally a million miles. Nothing on this car will bankrupt you if something fails, none of the parts are too expensive, and basically anyone can work on this car if you are capable enough to actually work on cars. This example up for bid in Arizona is one of the better 300SEs I’ve seen come up for sale in a long time. It has just over 75,000 miles and is clean like you wouldn’t believe. I’m not just talking about the interior, either.

1991 Mercedes 300SE: I am the 3rd owner , and I have owned this beautiful car for 3 years. I have driven it sparingly over the last 3 years adding only 3000 miles. The original owner purchased it new in Michigan, and retired to Phoenix a few years later. My friend did the window tint in 2003. He had asked to buy it when they were ready to sell. He purchased it in 2013, and subsequently sold it to me in 17. This is a great driving car. I will detail the condition below, but its been a favorite of mine for years. i am selling to purchase a 1992 500E.

Body: Excellent original paint. No clear coat failure. The chrome and stainless is in good shape. There are small chips and mars on the grill. The glass on the drivers headlight is cracked, but it works perfectly. The motor has a small oil leak, and sometimes coolant. I think the coolant is from the plastic bottle.

Chassis: Amazing condition showing the original Smoke Silver paint, and absolutely no rust. The bottom a is as nice as the top. On the chassis pics I have the inspection pan off, but it is back on and in excellent shape. I have installed new Michelin tires on 6-17-9 to replace the tires that had been on it for 20 years. They were in good shape but dry rotting. Suspension rides perfectly and does not pull to either side. The original tool roll is still in the plastic. The spare is a new looking Michelin, but I have never had it out to see the date code.

Motor and transmission: I have completed a tuneup as well as new lifters in the last 1000 miles. Also done was the belts hoses, and belt tenshioner. The engine runs great and pulls hard. Sometimes it is has to crack a bit to start and idles rough, but smooths out after a minute or two. The AC is excellent with the vacuum vents working properly as does the automatic climate control. I have made sure the cooling system operated properly allowing me to drive with the ac on when it is 110 degrees. The transmission shift perfectly.

Interior: The front drivers seat is slightly worn on the bolster. The rest of the seats show as new. The wood has slight spider cracking by the sifter the rest shows as new. The dash and door panels are excellent. Everything works as designed including the sun roof,Becker radio, cruise control. power windows, and even the locks. Sometimes you need the to give the locks a minute to operate. There is absolutely no smoke sell inside this car. It smells like a new car mixed with the unmistakable Mercedes leather sent.

Its an amazing car that my family has enjoyed immensely.

If you can eat bacon and eggs out of the wheel well, it is a clean car. It is one thing to make a car shine, but you can’t fake undercarriage clean. Seriously, go look at these photos to see what I’m talking about. All on a car with 75,000 miles. It is very clear by looking at this car and reading the description that the seller truly loves this car and took care of it as such. This is how you want to buy an older Mercedes. Find the cleanest example out there from a seller who going above and beyond to keep it that way. All 200 photos tell the story better than I can on this one, so I’ll let those do the talking.

So how much? Well, prices for these cars, much like every old car, depends on condition. Can you find one on Craigslist with a smashed up fender and a Hello Kitty steering cover for $2,500? Yes. Do you even want to think about buying that one? Absolutely not. Believe me, I’ve gone that route of “It’s cheap and I can save it” a few times before and I’m not doing it again. From now on, I’m just spending the extra money on a super clean one and not having to lay on my back for 35 minutes trying to figure out where the coolant is leaking from as soon as I drive it home. This one I suspect is going to touch $10,000 and I wouldn’t raise an eyebrow at that number. Those who buy these cars aren’t doing it by mistake and want them for a reason. Mostly though it’s a combination of everything I just rambled on about. But clearly I’m not the only one that feels this way – just watch the bidding and find out.

The W113 Mercedes-Benz Pagoda is one of those cars you can buy an example for $40,000 all the way up to $240,000 and no one would bat an eye at you for doing so. Condition and spec can vary widely, so naturally prices do as well. Outside of the wheel choices, they all have the same general look and the only major factor in determining price is the engine choice. You can chose between the 230, 250, or 280 spec with generally the 280 and manuals demanding the greatest dollar amount. Are the other two choices bad? Not at all. You aren’t exactly competing in vintage road racing in a Pagoda, so while the upgraded power from the 280 is surely nice, the main goal of this car is to cruise and look good. So if a 230SL came up for sale for a reasonable price with the right transmission, like we have today, would you say no?

1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL

4 speed. Factory alloys. Same owner for nearly 30 years. Absolutely solid. Nice presentable driver. Finished in German Racing Silver and beautiful “Pagoda” design. The 2.3 litre six cylinder engine propels this W 113 chassis to very satisfying results.

These pagoda cars have brought up to $200,000 in the last few years with 100’s sold for over $100,000. Same owner for decades from Eastern Washington well maintained, used sparingly, always garaged. 57,451 miles believed accurate.

Production of the 230 SL commenced in June 1963 and ended on 5 January 1967. Its chassis was based on the W 111 sedan platform, with a reduced wheelbase by 30 cm (11.8 in), recirculating ball steering (with optional power steering), double wishbone front suspension and an independent single-joint, low-pivot swing rear-axle with transverse compensator spring. The dual-circuit brake system had front disc brakes and power-assisted rear drum brakes.[10] The 230 SL was offered with a 4-speed manual transmission, or an optional, very responsive fluid coupled (no torque converter) 4-speed automatic transmission, which was popular for US models. From May 1966, the ZF S5-20 5-speed manual transmission was available as an additional option, which was particularly popular in Italy. Of the 19,831 230 SLs produced, less than a quarter were sold in the US.The 2,308 cc (2.3 L) M127.II inline-six engine with 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) and 196 N?m (145 lb?ft) torque was based on Mercedes-Benz’ venerable M180 inline-six with four main bearings and mechanical Bosch multi-port fuel injection. Mercedes-Benz made a number of modifications to boost its power, including increasing displacement from 2,197 cc (2.2 L), and using a completely new cylinder head with a higher compression ratio (9.3 vs. 8.7), enlarged valves and a modified camshaft. A fuel injection pump with six plungers instead of two was fitted, which allowed placing the nozzles in the cylinder head and “shooting” the fuel through the intake manifold and open valves directly into the combustion chambers. An optional oil-water heat exchanger was also available.Mercedes-Benz Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on the tight three-quarter mile Annemasse Vétraz-Monthoux race track in 1963, where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds vs. 47.3 seconds by Grand Prix driver Mike Parkes on his 3-liter V12 Ferrari 250 GT.[12]

The condition of this car is a “driver” at best. The major thing is it looks like there are some scrapes on the passenger rear that dented the metal. Not ideal at all as I don’t think I’d want body puddy as a fix for that. Inside, you have your typical aftermarket shift knob and steering wheel cover, along with radio from 1986. Although a death trap, the rear jump seat is kind of cool and a neat option. I suspect this car had steel wheels originally on it with the small hub caps, but the Bundts aren’t a terrible look although the tire size is maybe a bit big. I can buy this car having only 57,000 miles, although I’m always skeptical on 5-digit odometers unless there is solid records to back up the display.

How much will this car sell for? Well believe it or not, 230SL values have been sliding over the past two years or so. A nice $55,000 car is now a $40,000 car and the same goes for the 250 and 280, although at different price levels. Will they continue to slide? I don’t think so. I do think this giant run of classic cars gaining value every six months is pretty much over and just now people are starting to come to their senses on stuff that isn’t truly special. I think this is a $35,000 car all day, but sadly I don’t think the owner feels this way. That body work is going to be more expensive than anyone realizes.
