1982 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all. Well, this 1982 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL has it all. This W126 had a life of excess and has all the paperwork to prove it. The story goes the car was ordered as a grey market import by a private owner in Chicago with a boat load of options then immediately shipped to AMG for more special touches. Those “special touches” you see above aren’t the work of a 17 year-old who bought this car from a Buy-Here, Pay-Here lot and a couple cans of spray paint. No, that is the work of AMG. I’m sure they were scratching their heads a little when this work order came in, but when someone offers up $20,000 (in 1982 money, mind you), you do what they say. An AMG body kit was added, all the chrome was painted black, the wheels were replaced with Rial alloys, the interior needed more leather, and the engine gained roughly 50 horsepower for the small price of $11,000. Total cost for this entire car, modifications and all? $62,656. For those keeping score at home, that is $164,234 today. I hope this owner loved this car.

I don’t even know where to start with this one. This is a Euro-spec car with all the extra little goodies including the hydro-pneumatic suspension carried over from the W116 6.9. At the time and when in working order, a brilliant design. When it isn’t working, expensive enough to make your eyes water. Everything else in on this car as well. Air horns, rear window blinds, electric rear seats, orthopedic front seats, everything. The fact this car went to AMG for even more is nuts to me. To pay $11,000 just for 50 horsepower seems like insanity today considering what we get out of $1,200 ECU tunes. The other thing is this body work. If the owner would of ordered this car in black and not white, you’d have a line of people for this car. Instead it looks like a panda bear. The history is cool and all, but this color combo is rough even today where “80s retro” is cool again.

So how much? $32,000. I don’t even know how you’d value something like this. The condition is so-so and those expensive rear shocks are leaking that will be a four-figure bill. You basically have to be the world’s biggest AMG fan to even consider it and even someone like myself who writes about them on the internet would have a hard time loving this car. I think this car finds a home, and hopefully it can get it back to its former glory. It sure isn’t a bad example to start with if you want something different.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500GE

Be still, my beating heart. One of my favorite vehicles of all time in one of my favorite colors. This is a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500GE. You are probably saying “500GE?”, and yes, that would be correct. Somehow Mercedes stuffed the M117 V8 into the engine bay of the G and drove Mercedes technicians insane. The 500GE is extremely rare, and believe it or not, was only offered in one color: Amethyst Blue Metallic. There is nothing really blue about it, this G is purple. It is a much darker purple than Bornite Metallic and that is totally fine with me because I love it. This example for sale up in The Netherlands comes in with 135,000 miles and looks like it has about half that. The price? About what you’d expect.

Oh how I wish I had $55,000 to spend on a 25 year-old G-Wagen with a bunch of old technology stuffed inside it. By “old technology,” I mean the M117. By 1993/1994, the old iron lung had since been replaced with the much smoother and more efficient M119 in a neat package. I can’t imagine fuel efficiency is better than single-digits in the city, but you are driving around in a $55,000 G-Wagen, fuel prices don’t matter to you. As far as actual condition goes, this one is really nice. I’d be curious to see what the underside looks like as it does have over 130,000 miles, but I don’t think I would be too surprised.

So is this worth $55,000? If G-Wagens are your thing, I’d say so. This thing is rare as can be and is now fully a “classic”, plus it has worldwide appeal. I don’t think it would be anyone’s daily driver, but could certainly be so if you had someone willing to slice their hands up to work in this engine by when needed.

2003 Mercedes-Benz SL500

A few weeks ago I took a look at probably the best R230 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG I’ve ever come across. Turns out I wasn’t the only one who felt that way before it sold shortly after we featured it. That of course had me digging in the R230 rabbit hole and it looks like I hit gold today. This 2003 up for sale Oregon is a pretty standard example. First model year, has a couple dings and scars, 133,000 miles, but overall what’d you expect. It isn’t a flood car or two SLs welded together. Just a used 2003 SL500. Then I saw the price and wondered how insane an idea it would be drive a 16 year-old Mercedes convertible across the country. It’s that cheap.

$7,995. Thats it. I’m still searching around this ad to see why it is exactly that cheap. I see the lower part of the front bumper is cracked and the suspension looks like it is set a little high, but other than that, I’m stumped. For this used dealer to afford to sell this car for $7,995, they’d have to pay exactly what at the wholesale auction? $5,200? I know these cars are getting old, but that is crazy cheap. I could see if this car was beat to death or the top was broken, but I’m not seeing or reading anything that gives me that vibe. Dare I say the interior even looks really good? How I wish this car was even close to a days driving distance to me. I’d be willing to keep the top up and use it a daily driver. At this price, who cares if something goes wrong. Please someone tell me I’m blind and I’m missing something.

Please note: We have corrected this post to note that it is fitted with a 4.3L from the factory, not the 5.4L. Our apologies for the mistake. -dc

“Buy one now while you still can.”

How many times have you heard this over the years? We’ve seen it with all the cars that used to be not-so expensive and now are basically so crazy that it is cheaper just to build and buy replicas. Case in point, the E30 M3. I remember back in the early 2000s, staring into a monitor that was so heavy it would bow my desk, only dreaming of how I could get together $9,500 to buy one of those. Now? A 1988 with that’s been painted twice, has a non-original motor, and 240,000 miles sells for $30,000 all-in. Same goes for the 190e-16v. One used to be able to snag a decent one for under $10,000 without issue. Now, anything in that $10,000 range is going to be a serious project. Carter just featured a non-original Quattro that’s very much the same case. These cars come in waves as the years go on, only that wave never crashes and just stays high the entire time. Today’s car, a 1998 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG, is starting to jump on a wave.

“Amazing”

Truth be told, this is a seriously clean example. This car has only 39,000 miles and looks every bit the part. No torn interior, no leaky valve cover gaskets, no rusty fenders. Nothing. Just pure, clean, boxy lines. This car even has a little different look thanks to some Carlsson wheels and rear spoiler that sets it apart from other example. The owner seems fanatical as well about it and totally the type of person you want to buy a car from, at least from what I can tell in the photos. He even has the original window sticker showing the price of $57,000 back in 1998. Consider this, a 1998 Corvette Coupe was $38,000 when new. Makes you realize how much Mercedes really put into these things. The 4.3L is a serious improvement over the 3.6L straight six of the C36, and it is great match for the W202 body.

So back to the current market on these. Don’t look now, but super clean C36s with this kind of mileage are pulling $15,000-20,000 all day as we’ve seen from recent auction results. I’m not going out on a limb here by saying the C43 isn’t going to follow very soon, if not now. If for some reason you see a clean one just like this out there for sale, I don’t think you’ll even lose a dime on it by scooping it up. Even better, just grab this one and keep it as a weekend cruiser as long as you’d like. I just wish I had the space, and of course a big pile of money laying around.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A220

If you thought Mercedes-Benz couldn’t make a car any cheaper for the US market than the CLA/GLA, oh do I have a treat for you. The new A-Class are at dealers and I honestly thought when looking at this photo above that someone left a Dodge Dart on the lot on trade in that they didn’t get around to throwing in the dumpster yet. It’s bland, it’s uninspiring, it does nothing all that well, but it’s literally $35,000, so get ready to see these things absolutely everywhere. The race to the bottom is a competitive one, and Mercedes has a strong contender with the A220. The reviews are a mixed bag because there is a level of expectation with a $35,000 Mercedes, but from everything I’m reading, it isn’t all that bad. Still, it’s $35,000. They had to cheap out somewhere, right?

It is this commitment to excellence that makes our customer service not only our promise to you; it is our mission!

I don’t even know what to say about this car. The exterior is as safe as it gets, but the interior went 2020 on everyone really fast. We now have a Mercedes A-Class with dual full color LCD displays with absolutely no mechanical gauges. Granted, a $1,600 option, and worth every penny compared to the sad excuse for screens they use on the base models. The HVAC setup vents are cool, although you can tell bean counters in Stuttgart were telling the designers to slow down on the fancy stuff because stuff just kind of slides in holes pre-cut in the dash. Where you do see the cost-cutting is on things like the drive selector switch (pictured below) that make the watches sold at kiosks in the middle of the mall look like Patek Philippes. The rest of the cost-cutting can be seen in the seat material which I’m sure will look like a mess in four years and some really odd stuff like leaving bare metal showing in the trunk by not putting a cover panel on it.

Like mentioned, this car is $35,000. Who cares how it drives or what it feels like going around the corner, it’s $35,000 for a new Mercedes. The crazy thing is the starting price is $32,500, but good luck ever finding one with zero options, so $34,000 and change is as cheap as your going to get. You can option them out to almost $50,000, but you’d have to be totally insane to even think about doing that considering seeing the C-Class starts in the mid-40s. Crazy to think the once lowly C-Class has two four-door sedans below it.

Last week Carter took a look at a US-legal C5 Audi RS6 Avant that in terms of “super wagons” is right up there, and now that they are over 15 years-old, serious collectible vehicles. Thing is, you don’t get these amazing long bodies without some serious creative engineering and doing things like twin-turbocharging an already big V8. Mercedes-Benz is never one to be outdone, so they jumped into the game with the first-generation E55 AMG Estate and then went nuts on the W211 chassis with the supercharged E55 and 6.2 liter V8 E63. Today’s car is is the latter E63 that is just 1 or 62 examples produced for the 2007 model year for the US market. However, just like the RS6, big power means big issues, and judging by this car’s history, the E63 is not immune to that.

Doing some quick math here, 144,000 miles in about 12 years is right on the national average of 12,000 miles a year. Why is that significant? Because someone probably used this as a daily driver all that time. Kudos to them because if you have to drive a wagon, it might as well have 507 horsepower and a killer exhaust note. On the downside, using this car as daily driver means things wear out, and oh boy did they wear out in this one. No mention of the headbolts ever needing done, but basically everything else needed replaced. Just to highlight the big ones, this car needed a new transmission, radiator, power steering pump, coolant tank, and a whole list of other things. Maybe I’m crazy, but things like transmissions and power steering pumps shouldn’t need replaced at 12 years-old and 144,000 miles. I get wearable parts, that is part of the game, but a transmission?

I guess one positive is that the next buyer won’t be needing to replace the transmission unless they rack up another 144,000 for 12 years, but I’m sure other things are just waiting. To pay for this privilege of doing so, you need to bring $25,000 for this car. Looking at recent sales, that is about market value and maybe even a touch high considering the miles. $25,000 to $30,000 will get you in a nice E63 Estate with probably a pile of maintenance to go along with it. I think I would need this price to be closer to $20,000 given it’s issues outside of normal repairs, although looking at the several dozen watchers on this listing, I think someone will pony up for it. Probably not me however.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

Some situations in life you do even when you know it is a bad idea and you will probably pay for it later. Like going back for that second piece of cake or buying a 15 year-old Mercedes-Benz with 738 horsepower and 840 lb-ft of torque. Okay, so maybe not too similar a set of examples, but you get the idea. What I’m trying to say is if a 2005 CL65 AMG with a RENNtech tune came up for sale that had enough power to spin the rear wheels at 60 mph, would you consider it? I think that answer depends on what your needs of a car is, do you have the budget, and are you currently under the influence of psychedelics? Still, my chest gets tight when I have to break a $100 bill, but this car is just so much for so little. How little?

I am selling my 2005 CL65 RennTech AMG. Car runs and drives excellent. It is loaded with all options: Parktronic, keyless go, heated and cooled seats, rear sunshade, etc.

This is the cheapest CL65 you will find. Original MSRP was over $200k. Own it for a fraction of the cost.

RennTech Stage 1 Tune:

Tuned by RennTech which increases horsepower from 604hp to 680hp and torque from 738lb/ft to 840lb/ft. This car is superfast and not for the faint of heart. The traction control has a hard time keeping up especially when you step on it.

Wheels:

OEM two piece AMG Presidential Wheels. Completely refinished to OEM specs. No dents, dings or curb rash. Wrapped in Continental Sport A/S. Tires in front are brand new and rear tires have 80% treads.

Title Status:

This CL65 was purchased with suspension damage to the left front wheel. All suspension parts were replaced with OEM parts by a certified Mercedes Mechanic. An a service was also performed at that time.

Before I get into how cheap this car is, I want to fully disclose it has an R-title. The seller says it had damage to the left front suspension and wheel, which I assume is when whoever driving this car barely touched the gas pedal and shot the car directly into the closest wall. Seriously, these cars are fast enough out of the box, but we always want more so it has the RENNtech ECU tune that bumps power up to 738 horsepower and 840 lb-ft of torque. Given this is a rear wheel drive car with a 275/35 tire, you can forgot about actually getting to use all of that power. Then of course you factor in that this is a M275-powered car with multiple things that can be in the thousands if needing fixed and don’t forget about the always troublesome ABC suspension. Still, in terms of super car levels of performance, it isn’t all that bad. I realize that is like saying “Well, at least the dictator didn’t ruin everyone’s lives“, but seriously, there are much more expensive to maintain cars out there that offer this level of performance for much more money.

How much? $14,500. I know people who have paid more for a Chevy Spark than $14,500, but their oil change is also $29.99 and they top off your washer fluid too. If this is your third, or fourth, or maybe fifth car, just to play it safe, then $14,500 isn’t a giant gamble. I think we have reached the point where these M275 AMG cars from this era have settled around the $20,000 mark for a decent one so you are basically getting $6,000 off for this being a rebuilt titled car. Would I do it? Not without some serious due diligence. I’m sure a pre-purchase inspection will find a bunch of stuff that needs attention to the point you can say “How does $10,000 sound?”

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC

I still get wishy-washy on the Mercedes-Benz W140 Coupe. Sometimes I think it looks great, other times I think it looks very odd. Yes, a lot of that has to do with the wheel and tire combo, but maybe my argument is that it shouldn’t come down to what wheels and tires a car has to determine if it looks good or not. The reason this comes up is because I came across a very interesting 1993 500SEC up for sale in Florida for a couple of reasons. First, it is painted in the very rare Nautical Blue Metallic. Second, it only has 98k miles on the odometer. Lastly, it is relatively cheap. Although that is probably for a reason.

I was all for this car until I saw the condition of the interior. For such a cool exterior color, the beat up interior took all the wind out of my sails. I’m sure you could source some stuff to clean it up, but this one looks like it has some issues. The headliner is noted as needing replaced, the expensive front grill is also busted up, and the SRS light is on. Open the hood, and someone dumped about three bottles of the tacky detail spray over all the plastics that ends up feeling like a two liter of Coke dumped all over your kitchen floor. I’m willing to bet the SLS rear suspension isn’t up to par and a bunch of other various suspension bits are in need of refreshing.

The car is only $4,900, but even at that I’d probably pass. The “projects” like these are becoming less and less appealing to me as I get older, and I’d much rather just pay up front for a clean one to begin with. Surely this one has a little bit of potential and the color is something that I rarely see, but as it sits I think you can probably do better. Hopefully someone can save it.

2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

I’m fortunate enough to work from home or basically anywhere I have a halfway decent internet connection, so a traditional commute for me really isn’t a thing. When I think about it, the only time I actually have to be somewhere at an exact time is when I go to the dentist or get a haircut, but if I buy today’s car that can be eliminated because it might turn me into a penny-less bum who lives on the street. This a 2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and it’s a giant sedan that does 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and sounds very mean doing it. One of these new would run you close to $135,000 in 2008, but now 11 years later, it is worth less than 20% of that. Why? Because it is a high-performance luxury sedan from a German manufacturer. The only thing that depreciates faster is the timeshare your crazy uncle bought on the Florida coast that gets leveled by a hurricane twice a year.

On paper, there are two things that can go wrong with this car. One is the scary head bolt stretch and the other is suspension. Unfortunately, the rest of things that will go wrong and by “go wrong” I mean “wear out and cost you money sooner or later” aren’t exactly Rock Auto parts, either. The massive brakes are no cheap fix and you will eat through tires probably once a year given this car has 465 lb-ft of torque. Gas mileage? A solid 11 mpg in combined driving. Do you understand why this car is now $24,000 when it has 60,000 miles? These cars were for those who purposely seek out brand names at the grocery store. Maybe they even own a horse, or two! In all seriousness, this car has a potential to go sideways really fast in more ways than one. I don’t know why the engine cover is cracked like that and the selling dealer lists zero information on this car as well. Is it a better choice than a S65? Maybe. Should you buy it expecting to spend $5,000 a year in upkeep in you are lucky? Very much so. As fun as this car would be, I think I’ll pass for now. I like my barber and want to keep him around.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600

Hell hath no fury like depreciation on a Maybach. A few years ago I looked at a Maybach 57s that, in terms of pure insanity to buy and maintain, was probably at the top of the list. Not only was the technology already badly dated, but it has some truly eye-wateringly expensive parts on it like a watercooled alternator that can only be bought used for $8,000. Today, I have another Maybach that is probably in the same boat as the car from over three years ago. This 2016 S600 has everything you could want out of an ultra-luxury car including two little pillows for you nap on or have the world’s most posh pillow fight with your backseat companion. The reason I am looking at this example specifically is because despite it being a 2016, it has almost 118,000 miles on. You know what that means in terms of price.

2016 Maybach S600

This Maybach is flawless inside and out. Clean carfax, always privately registered and owned. All maintenance is up to date and drives like it did off the showroom floor. Interior is flawless with no wrinkles or wear in any of the leather , still smells like new. Wheels have absolutely no blemishes and tires are brand new. Even with the higher milage there is no cleaner Maybach on the market.

I have everything the Maybach came with off the showroom. All the original manuals, books, kits, window sticker, remotes, pillows, ear phones, maint records, etc.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, pre purchase and personal inspections are encouraged.

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME TO NEGOTIATE PRICE, IT IS VERY FIRM. THANK YOU

Just to get to the point, the sticker price on this car when new was $197,000. Today, this car is for sale for $64,000. Doing the quick math, that means this car cost $1.13 in depreciation ALONE for every single mile it was driven. Quick 10 mile drive to the store and back? That’s $11.30 gone. A 45-mile route into the city for the night? $50.85. Keep in mind, the maintenance and service on this car wasn’t free either. Under the skin this thing is just a regular S600, but that is like saying the Blizzard of ’93 was just a snowfall when it ended up killing more than 300 people. Everything is still really expensive on this car and goodness help you if something Maybach-specific breaks.

So what is the point of this car and who would be a buyer? A private owner with the cash to spare probably isn’t messing around with this thing. My only reasonable idea for who would want to own this car is some kind of car service, but then again, can you really trust a Maybach with 118,000 miles on it to transport the kind of people who request Maybachs to be driven around in?

1966 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Coupe

In terms of ‘Classic Mercedes-Benz’, the W111 Coupe is near the top. Rightfully so, as it is a product of Frenchman Paul Bracq who was also responsible for the Pagoda, 600, and even some other iconic cars at BMW, Citroën, and Peugeot. It’s as every bit as elegant and stunning as anything that rolled out of the factory in Crewe, England at rival Rolls-Royce/Bentely, and the build quality is on par with some international bank vaults. Even doing a quick Google search for “W111 Coupe” will have you lost in an array of stunning examples. However, I highly doubt a Google search will turn up this color combination. This 1966 up for sale in Florida is painted in Sandbeige Metallic over a green leather interior. Yes, green. Not that green that almost looks like black. No, this is Saint Patrick’s Day green. Wait until you peek inside this car.

*

This stunning Mercedes-Benz is only 53 years old.

You have to wonder how a color combination like this gets made. Is the car coming down the production line and someone said “Hey, we have some gold paint leftover and a green interior, will that be okay?” Did someone order this car like this? The thing is, I don’t hate it. To me, the more unique, the better. I say this as someone who owns a silver over black and tan over brown Mercedes, but give me these crazy interiors all day. All that luscious wood just finishes the interior off so well, but the grey carpets are a little bit of a head scratcher. Not the end of the world, but no one will focus on those anyway.

Prices for the W111 Coupe are all over the map depending on engine choice and condition. You can grab a really early model for under $20,000 if you don’t mind a little bit of a project, and go all the way up well into six-figues for 3.5s in outstanding condition. This car has been offered for a few weeks starting in the high 30s but has been slowing falling to it’s current price of $32,500. Not a bad price at all given it’s recent maintenance and condition. I honestly think the Sandbeige Metallic will hold this car back more than the green interior as no one is out there jumping to sign up for “old man tan”, myself included.

1999 Mercedes-Benz CL500

A few weeks ago I took a look at a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC that needed some help to say the least. Thankfully it looks like it sold a few days ago for a low sum of $4,600 and maybe is on its way to a new life. Honestly, I wouldn’t bet on it given how expensive it would be to refurbish the car. Today, I’d thought I’d look at another C140 that looks like it doesn’t need much, if anything at all. This CL500 up for sale in the Los Angeles area is a rare 1999 model, the last year the C140 was in production. Mercedes really cut back on the C140 for the 1999 model year – production was just under 1,500 for the entire world. Word is, only around 125 of them made it to the U.S. in both CL500 and CL600 guise. Needless to say, a rare bird. The good news is this example has just over 100,000 miles on it and looks like it has about half of that. The better news, it isn’t as expensive as you might of thought.

This is a stunning 2 owner 1999 Mercedes CL 500. This is a the last of the Mercedes made in Germany and the final and most advanced for the W-140 body. From April of 1991- September 1998 Mercedes-Benz built 432,732 examples of the 140 series, comprising 406,710 sedans and 26,022 coupés. Only 1461 CL500’s were made for the 1999 model year and allegedly less than 10% were brought in the USA. So this is an extremely rare car.

This has been a highly maintained California car since new and has had the same meticulous owner for the past 13 year and the first 7. The car spent most of it’s life in between Beverly Hills and Rancho Mirage, Ca. It has been carefully driven and garage kept since new. This car is beautiful inside and out and has 103,798 original miles. The all original “brilliant silver” paint finish shines brilliantly!!!! The body is near flawless and of course it has never been exposed to harsh weather conditions being in Southern California since new. So no rust, blisters or bubbles of any kind. The underside is just as nice as the rest of the car.

This is a Carfax/Autocheck certified no accident two owner vehicle. The average Auto check score for similar vehicles is 48-70. This paticular CL500 scored an above average score of 72. The car has passed every strict California emissions test/smog test with flying colors.

The first generation CL-Class was the sleek but hard-lined and redesigned W140-chassis (internally known as C140).

Designed by Bruno Sacco, the C140’s final design was approved between late 1987 and early 1988. Though the coupé’s physical appearance changed little over these years, the class underwent a name change several times. The V8 and V12 coupés were called the 500 SEC and 600 SEC, respectively, in 1992 and 1993. The 600 SEC was the first V12 coupé ever offered by Mercedes-Benz. For 1994, the model names were changed to the S500 Coupé and the S600 Coupé. The name CL-Class was adopted in June 1996(1997 for MY1998 North American models), and the W140 coupés were called the CL500 and CL600. Production ended in August 1998.

The M119 5.0 L V8 engine was regarded as one of the best engines ever produced by the German manufacturer (according to various journalists from automobile magazines such as Car and Auto Motor Und Sport). Being much lighter at the front, the CL500 tended to have better handling characteristics than the heavier V12 flagship.

Mechanically the CL is in tip top condition. The 5.0L V8 EFI engine starts up and runs extremely well! There are no leaks or unusual noises. The transmission shifts perfectly. The “sport mode” really takes this car to another level. There are no warning or service lights on. The brakes, steering and suspension are all superb!

All mechanical, electrical and climate control systems are in proper working condition. The air conditioning and heat (including the heated seats) work as intended. These cars have an advanced high intensity heating and air conditioning system.

The interior is beautifully appointed and in amazing condition! This car was $95,000 new so there is nothing but the finest quality you can imagine. The wood is incredible! The “Black Napa” leather seats are soft and show virtually no wear. The headliner, door panels, console dash and carpeting are excellent! All of the windows/seats/sunroof operate just like they should. All the controls work and the Bose sound system sounds like you are in a theater! The double pane glass keeps the outside noise, outside…..The Alpine head unit was replaced and the car comes with the original radio which can be seen in the picture below. The car comes equipped with a very expensive fully functional “Parrot” blue-tooth system.
–Beautiful factory chrome wheels
–Correct matching Michelin tires with 90% tread remaining
–Comes with all the books and valet keys
–$12k + in service records and reciepts
–All original factory glass with “Daimler” sticker still present on the passenger lower corner of the windshield
There is not more much to say about this fine automobile other than they surely don’t make them this good anymore. This is truly the last of the extremely well built Mercedes.
These cars will become very collectible so now is the right time to own one and drive it while it continues to appreciate in value.

The new owner will be pleased with the overall condition. This car is impressive to say the least!!!!!!

California buyers, or if you plan on picking up in California you will be responsible for full price of motor vehicle + tax, title, registration (current or past due, transfer, DMV and all other fees associated with the sale in California. Out of state or country buyers only pay for the price of the vehicle with no other fees.

This vehicle is also available for sale locally and is subject to removal from the auction at anytime should it be sold. If you have any questions call Evan at 833-225-4227 or e-mail. We can arrange shipping worldwide, it can be expedited quickly and inexpensively to your door.

Sign me up for this car. I don’t love the chrome wheels, but everything else looks prime to me. It looks like it has some nice service records and I don’t see anything from the photos that alarms me at all. These M119 hunks are fairly strong with only a few little things that can go sideways and the 722.6 is arguably the best transmission Mercedes has ever produced. Inside, none of the leather looks worn and thankfully the beautiful burl wood trim is crack-free. All in all, I’m not seeing a lot to dislike with this one.

How much? $10,000. Are there better deals out there? Probably. But honestly I think this is a fair buy. Finding a really nice 1999 is a tough task given how few there are and if you really want a nice C140, it is tough to argue against this car. Values have been flat on these for awhile and I think they’ll probably stay that way for some time, but I don’t think you’ll be losing 50% on this one if you buy it for a weekend cruiser. All in all, a good car at a good price. I can’t say that too often.

1991 Mercedes-Benz G230

There area bunch of oxymorons in the automotive world. Reliable Fiat. Quality Maserati. Leak-free Land Rover. Inexpensive Porsche. Today, we have another one to add to the list: Restored G-Wagen.

Long before the housewives of the world used the G-Wagen as a grocery-getter and mall crawler, this box on wheels was a utilitarian masterpiece. It was meant to be used and abused, and for the first 21 years of production, they basically were. Then in 1990 when the W463 rolled onto the scene, they got very posh, very fast. However, if you still want that utilitarian experience, there are plenty of them out there. To no one’s surprise, people like to have their cake and eat it too. They want old, but they also want comfortable and luxury. That is exactly what this 1991 G230 is. Someone actually went through the trouble and expense of restoring a G-Wagen with a naturally-aspirated four cylinder that made 123 horsepower when new. I guess that is all you need when the speed limit on Nantucket is only 25 mph.

This seems to be the trend now with taking older and vintage SUVs and wrapping them in as much leather as possible. While the selling dealer touts this as a restoration, this falls way more on the modified side given all the non-original parts that were added as well as a bunch of little things they missed. It was “no expesnes spared” outside of the totally missing fender liners, wiper arm caps, tow pin, and some sloppy paintwork in the door jams. Not to mention the spare tire is different and the tires themselves are a European brand. That leads me to believe that this G was “restored” somewhere else and simply shipped over to push off to unsuspecting Americans flush with cash and jealous of their neighbor’s Bronco.

At $60,000, that is a lot of money for this truck. The G230 is a real odd ball in general, let alone in North America as there weren’t a ton made in this spec. My guess is they bought this truck dirt cheap, dumped some paint, leather, and cheap labor into, and are looking to turn an easy five-figure profit. For this kind of money, there are much better options out there for less.

2000 Mercedes-Benz SL600

For as many crazy colors as Porsche produces, Mercedes-Benz will once in awhile surprise you with something that you wouldn’t expect. I say “once in awhile” meaning almost never, because at the end of the day these are very serious Germans who make cars in very serious colors like silver, black, and everyone’s favorite, beige. However, today we have color that is quite wonderful. This 2000 SL600 up for sale in The Netherlands is finished in Aquamarine Blue Metallic with a navy blue top and of course a tan interior, because they wouldn’t want to go off the deep end or anything. It has just a hair of 26,000 miles and just like everyone else for sale at this dealer, is nearly flawless. However, that usually comes with a higher price tag and this one is up there. Way up there.

Mileage: 42,000 km (26,000 mi)

Price: €79,500 ($87,948)

Coming from a private collection this crack and crystal clear Mercedes SL 600 from the very last series of the R129 series. Since 31.05.2002 with then 35,321 km until 2019 in the possession of the same Belgian owner. Performed in an extremely rare color; 341 Aquamarin blue metallic with 514 Java exclusive nappa leather. What is this good! Very chic and tasteful. Well executed with, among other things, the expensive 245-board computer / Reiserechner, 404/405 multi-contour seats (all seats can be filled with air), 810-Bose sound system and the original 18-inch AMG wheels with a polished edge. Originally only 42.758 km and recently had Service B at the Mercedes dealer. The state is amazing and definitely A1 condition (no crushed stone, completely first paint, rim edges undamaged, no traces of use in the interior, spotless convertible top, etc etc). Car has not seen any rain in its life! All accessories complete; so with hardtop and standard, purchase invoice, all folders, keys, booklets, invoices, etc. One-off!

This car is probably 99% perfect. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that. Reason being, for the price they are asking for it, it absolutely better be perfect. The asking price of €79,500, or roughly $88,000, is all the money in the world for this car. There are SL70 AMG examples that have sold for less than this. For that kind of money, I’d want a SL70 and I’d want an interior color combo that is better than this example. The dark drab dashboard doesn’t compliment the Aquamarine color at all, and even less so with the navy blue top. On top of it all, this isn’t even optioned with the SL1 package that includes the AMG-designed bumpers. No Xenon headlamps on this car either, which is even more disappointing.

I know it’s a perfect car with almost no miles as well as a cool color. But I’m just not seeing where they came up with the price of $88,000 from. There are literally piles of super clean examples out there for $25,000 if you want that. If you don’t care about miles, even cheaper. This car just doesn’t add up for me at all. Maybe someone else can make sense of it.

2007 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG with 322,000 miles

For me, there is this constant back and forth between “They don’t make them like they used to” and “Newer cars can basically go forever with proper maintenance and repairs”. Today’s car falls in the latter half. Although I’m skeptical. Very skeptical. Why? In case you haven’t noticed the title, this is a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG with over 322,000 miles on the odometer. Yes, this 6.0 liter twin-turbocharged whale of a car that produces 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque has somehow racked up over 322,000 miles. According to the helpful Carfax, this car registered just over 29,000 miles in its first three years – a totally normal amount. Then the next five years saw the odometer jump to 200,000 miles. Six months later, 250,000 miles. That is 275 miles every single day for six months. How? Why?

I think it is hilarious that the dealer totally glosses over this car has the mountain of miles on it. It is just another generic description written and they filled in the blank for 322,000 miles. The funny this is, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a super sedan with these kind of miles. Back in May, I looked at a 2007 Audi S8 with 308,000 miles. My guess is whoever is racking up these miles works over the road and has a very healthy car allowance. Otherwise, there is no way this makes sense as a vehicle to chose to put 8,000 miles a month on. The amount of fuel you burn is outrageous, not to mention the expensive tires, brake pads, and oil changes. As for the actual condition of this car, it looks fine. No major wear and looks like a 100,000 car. However, the Carfax also shows an accident back in 2012, but no details.

Much like the S8, this price is crazy. Nearly $17,000 for a 322,000 miles and a mystery accident is absurd. One of the most respected sellers of these M275 cars in the country regularly lets these go in the mid-20s and even the same year S600s sell for even cheaper. Those cars aren’t total unknowns either, they all have VMIs and often times are fully serviced and need nothing. My guess is this “hi-line” dealer got this thing for a song at auction and is looking to cash in big. Right now as it sits, I wouldn’t pay a dime over $10,000 for it.

1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9

The holy trinity of M100-powered Mercedes-Benz cars, the 600, 300SEL 6.3, and 450SEL 6.9, are not for the causal or faint of heart owners. The buy-in is expensive, the parts are expensive, the labor is expensive, everything is expensive. These are not cars you can stick in the corner of the garage under a cover with a battery tender hooked up only to drive it once a month, if that. They all use extremely complicated suspension systems that will leave you weeping if you walk out in the garage and see the car suddenly resting on its rocker panels. Despite support from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, lots of parts have been no longer available for many years and aren’t coming back, so your only hope it to pray that it doesn’t break and if it does, hope it can be rebuilt. There is a very small, but passionate group of owners of these cars in the M100 club, but their membership is decreasing as the years going on as younger generations aren’t interested in spending sometimes five-figures for routine repairs on these cars.

If you are brave enough to dip your toe into the world of dry-sump engine lubrication and doors heavy enough to slice your fingers clean off if they get caught in them, then the 450SEL 6.9 is where you want to start. Full disclosure, I own a W116 chassis, in non-6.9 trim, so I am a bit biased on these, but also extremely realistic as I’ve worked on a 6.9 extensively and lived to tell about. The hydraulic suspension system is sturdy, but again, very pricey if something goes wrong, and the same can be said for the 6.9 engine itself. The non-6.9 bits are some of the best materials you could ever ask for in a car, sans the god-forsaken US-spec HVAC, so it is for sure a give and take situation. Buy a well-sorted example and stay diligent with the maintenance, it won’t be so bad. However, buy a project and have fun explaining to your wife and kids why Santa won’t be visiting your house this year. Thankfully the car I’m looking at today, a rare European-spec 1977, looks to have all the major things looked after and is it relatively good health. The thing is, I don’t think the owner wants to let go of it. At least for not what I think it is worth.

This 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 is a European example that was sold new in France and later imported to the US, where it remained in South Carolina (no rust) until the selling dealer’s acquisition earlier this year. Power is provided by a 6.9-liter SOHC V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Anthracite Grey Metallic over Parchment interior, this W116 is now offered with a clean Ohio title.

The exterior was repainted in 2018 in its factory shade of Anthracite Grey Metallic (172), and closeups of the finish and trim are provided in the photo gallery below. A new heated rear window was also installed in the last year.

Recent service includes… Engine oil and filter, transmission service, new battery, new spark plugs, new brake flex hoses, new steering coupling, new lower control arm ball joints, new engine mounts, and FIVE brand new tires.
And previous owner had hydraulic work done 2-3 years ago.

The data plate on the radiator support above shows the factory paint color and option codes as follows:

172 – Anthracite Grey Metallic
592 – Insulating glass all around/heated rear window
629 – Version for France
638 – Elimination of warning triangle
812 – Rear-mount loudspeaker
877 – Reading lamp in the rear
261 – Elimination of model designation
510 – Becker radio cassette
531 – Automatic antenna

I’ll tell anyone who will listen, which isn’t many people at all, if you are serious about a 6.9 just buy a European-spec car. Not only do you get the wonderful European-spec bumpers and headlights, as well as the manual climate control, but the M100 can actually breathe enough to make the 405 ft-lb of torque it is capable of. All of that combined is well worth waiting for the right example to come up. This 1977 seems to be well sorted and has some maintenance done, but there are no real records at all. It is offered by a dealer so their care about that is below zero, just as long as it drives off their lot long enough for them to change their phone number.

The interesting thing about this car is that it was offered on Bring a Trailer two weeks ago and bid to $18,000, resulting in a reserve not met situation. In my opinion, the dealer was crazy not to take that money and run. Someone offering you $18,000 for an average quality 6.9 that has been painted once, has no records, and a bunch of interior flaws is all the money. Why they didn’t take that is beyond me and it looks like they aren’t looking for that much more given their $25,000 asking price on eBay. Seeing as they are asking $25,000, their real price is probably somewhere just over $20,000. In this ever-shrinking seller’s market for M100-powered cars, if someone offers you a fair price you take it. My guess is two months from now the dealer will be saying the same thing.

The Aquarium: 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 by Chapron

$

Its hard to imagine a car that was more sought after and requested by the truly elite of the world than the Mercedes-Benz 600. I don’t need to regurgitate over and over again all the well-known individuals who owned these cars as I’ve done that in the past, but if you want to read about some of them, go nuts. Naturally, with great power and wealth comes with certain expectations and certain requests made to their favorite luxury car maker. I’ve seen some pretty crazy stuff that the Mercedes factory honored the request of, but today’s modification was so nuts that the Mercedes factory flat out said no to.

Nubar Gulbenkian, an Armenian oil tycoon, had a taste for eccentric luxury cars to say the least. He commissioned Rolls-Royce to build him some truly wild stuff and naturally asked Mercedes to do the same with their 600. The thing is, Mercedes said no. Why? Well, Gulbenkian had a thing for cars with fully transparent roofs. He had a 1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith with a transparent Perspex roof, among other body modifications, that is truly a one-off. The story goes, Mercedes wouldn’t do it on the 600 because the structure of the roof isn’t entirely flat. So bending a giant sheet of glass on a car that is constantly flexing and experiences temperature swings isn’t something they wanted to dive into nor stand behind when it breaks. Tycoons usually don’t take no for an answer, so Gulbenkian ordered a standard 600 through a fake name and asked coach builder Henri Chapron in Paris to do the work. In additional to adding the roof, they covered the entire interior in leather and added other little touches like tobacco pipe holders on the front seat backs. I told you this guy was eccentric.

One-off coachbuilt example by Henri Chapron of Paris
Full glass roof unique to this example
Fascinating ownership history, delivered new to Nubar Gulbenkian
Residing in Portugal since 1972 with 30 years of single ownership

Amongst the 2,677 Mercedes-Benz 600s built, and being the 293rd built in 1966, this example stands proud as being truly unique, reputedly laying claim to the distinction of the most expensive road car built in 1966. It was built for an eccentric Armenian oil magnate named Nubar Gulbenkian (son of Calouste Gulbenkian), who initially approached Mercedes-Benz about building his 600 with a full glass roof. When Mercedes-Benz did not approve his outlandish request, Gulbenkian instead ordered a standard 600 limousine through a French dealer under a false name, taking matters into his own hands. Upon delivery, it was sent to Parisian coachbuilder Henri Chapron for modifications including the aforementioned glass roof. So that its owner could look at the stars, the rear seat was made to fold into a double bed.

Door panels are fitted with hand-held mirrors, and deflector frames of glass were designed with the sole purpose of regulating the flow of fresh air to create minimal turbulence. Special tobacco pipe holders are fitted, as well as a minibar between the seats. The owner kept tabs on his driver with both a speedometer and fuel gauge fitted to the rear compartment. And, atypical of 600s, there is no wood lining the interior; in its place, sumptuous leather throughout. This was a man obsessed with the details.

Upon Gulbenkian’s passing in 1972, he left the car in his will to the Portuguese gardener of his house in Cannes. After taking possession of the car, its new owner shipped it home to Portugal and left it in storage, and there it stayed for the next 30 years. Upon finally moving to its next custodian, the car allegedly needed only minimal servicing and a cleaning to bring it back to usable condition. Passing through the collection of José Mira, under whose ownership it was featured in a Petrolicious article, the car was only recently acquired by Mr Sáragga and remains in wonderful condition today.

Every Mercedes-Benz 600 is a special car, but this example is undoubtedly more special than most and warrants serious consideration from any Mercedes-Benz aficionado.

Taking a look at the photos of this car, you can see how crazy it is. That glass panel makes any modern car jealous, but sadly, the current condition does not. Gulbenkian kept this car in Cannes, France at one of his estates and gifted it to his Portuguese gardener who worked there upon his death. You would think the gardener would sell it and live off that the rest of his life, but no, he imported this car back to his native Portugal and it went into storage where it sat for over 30 years. I don’t need to tell you what a car does when in storage for 30 years, let alone a coachbuilt 600. Just like Mercedes thought, the roof glass is cracked in many places, along with the suspension looking awfully wonky in these glamour photos. I’m sure it needs a bunch of other work as well, but nothing is said about that because auction houses are about as honest as the PR department at a Russian nuclear power plant.

The car is offered this week in Portugal at no reserve for whoever is brave enough to sign up for it. They have a guided price of between €300,000 – €400,000, but I’ll be shocked if it hits that number. I know people have a lot of money to spend on crazy stuff, but if this car doesn’t have the glass roof, it’s worth $75,000. The 600 market is very soft for cars that need a lot of love, and this roof on this car isn’t going to fix itself.

1988 Mercedes-Benz 230TE 3.2 AMG

AMG subsidiary AMG Japan produced some wonderfully subtle vehicles in their heyday. The natural course of action if you are a tuner is to go big or go home, which they did occasionally, but not every car can be a 6.0L V8 with giant wide fender flares to make the Batmobile jealous. Today’s car, a 1988 230TE 3.2, exemplifies how AMG Japan sometimes modded cars. It is very subtle and under the radar compared to the normally flashy vehicles that came from Japan and they even went as far as converting the front end to a facelift look that I think finishes the car off perfectly. The thing is, if you want one of these, you’ll be paying for it. Collectors are gobbling up any early AMG car they can get their hands on and this one looks like it will be no different.

****Actual Vehicle VIN: WDB1240831F070684 (Ebay will not recognize this VIN as it is an imported vehicle)

This 1989 Mercedes-Benz 230TE is a Japanese-market car modified by AMG with a 3.2-liter straight-six M103 engine producing 230 horsepower, and is equipped with AMG suspension, exhaust, wheels, bodywork, trim and interior.

The 3.0L M103 inline-six was modified by AMG to 3.2L specification, including a hydraulic-lifter cylinder head and stroker crankshaft, reportedly increasing output from 177 horsepower to 230 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission. The AMG VIN tag shows the vehicle VIN and AMG serial number. Approximately 87,000 kilometers (~54,000 miles) are shown on the odometer.

The body is finished in Arctic White (147) with color-keyed body cladding, along with AMG valances and side skirts. The 17? AMG wheels retain their factory finish, and are fitted with Continental Extreme Contact tires. The car is also equipped with an AMG exhaust and springs.

On the inside, the rear of the cabin is upholstered in blue velour, while the fronts are a pair of desirable and rare Recaro CSE seats wrapped in blue leather. The mismatched front and rear seats are indicative of early AMG builds, where Recaro CSE seats first became available as an option. The cargo area features a hide-away rear-facing jump seat and retractable mesh and canopy partitions to separate the main cabin. The Interior also houses an AMG Steering wheel, a 300-km/h speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer gauge cluster. Burl wood veneers accent the blue dash, center stack and door panels. Close-up photos of the upholstery and interior trim are provided in the gallery.

The left-hand-drive car was imported from Japan in May 2019 and is being offered with export paperwork, recent service records, and a clean U.S. title. Since importation the car has received a complete service, including:

– Oil/Oil filter change

– Fuel system cleaning, and installation of a new fuel pressure regulator

– Brand new hood heat insulation pad

– (6) New fuel injectors

– (6) New spark plugs

– (4) Brand new Continental tires.

– New wiper Blade

The complete list of all AMG modifications include:

– AMG M103 3.2Liter Motor

– AMG Aero Kit

– AMG optioned Recaro CSE seats

– AMG 17′ Wheels

– AMG Steering Wheel

– AMG 300kmph Speedometer

– AMG Exhaust

– AMG Springs

Additional information on service and condition can be provided upon request. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly for any additional inquiries.

Thank you and best of luck to those bidding!

The interesting thing with this car is it was delivered with a 2.3 liter M102.982 which was a perfectly fine engine, but with just 130 horsepower no one was buying it for speed. AMG promptly ditched that and went with their tried and true M103 and increased displacement to 3.2 liters resulting in 230 horsepower. That is much better in terms of getting this grocery-getter down the road. Other cool goodies are the mentioned facelift front end, 17″ multi-piece AMG wheels, and period-correct Recaro CSE seats. This clearly isn’t the cleanest example on the planet as Japan is generally pretty hard on their cards, but this one look well used for only having around 54,000 miles.

The bidding as I write this is well over $20,000 and the reserve is still not met. My guess is the seller is asking top dollar, and despite the heavy wear he might actually get it. This one is in the right area around NYC where there are plenty of people with plenty of money who want this type of classic. Is it worth it? I’m not sure. You basically have to be in love with the W124 wagon to drop this kind of cash on it. The closest recent comparison was another JDM import that wasn’t an AMG car, but rather had a bunch of Lorisner goodies, and sold for right over $20,000. Is this one above that car? Very much so. My guess this one lands north of $30,000, but I’m not sure if that is enough to take it home.

2001 Mercedes-Benz S320 CDI

I certainly didn’t expect to see this on U.S. soil. “This” is a 2001 Mercedes-Benz S320 CDI. That means this is a short wheelbase W220 with the OM613 turbo diesel engine. Produced from 2000 to 2002, this S-Class was never brought to North America because the diesel S-Class was killed off in the early-90s during the W140 chassis and still hasn’t returned…and probably never will. It was very light on equipment and options, but it wasn’t about that in this car. It was about that sweet OM613. Have a gentle foot, and you could return 30 miles per gallon out of this boat of a car. I know an economical S-Class is a bit of an oxymoron (more of those here), but this is very much a situation of having it all. Let me explain.

– I f you have any question, please feel free to contact me throught ebay –

– Thank you so much –

I have a lot of questions about this car. First, it is located literally right on the US/Canadian border south of Montreal. However, it has a Ohio title. Usually situations where a title is out of state in private hands, it means it is trying to be skipped. Second, how did it even get an Ohio title? The seller says the first owner was a European diplomat and it was imported in 2018. It seems very strange that a European diplomat would keep an S-Class this old and even stranger it is titled in Ohio of all places. Combine all this with what looks like the seller not speaking English as a first language, this seems all very suspicious to me.

As for the car itself, it has a strange spec if there ever was one. It has all lightweight 16″ wheels, a cloth interior, but also has front and rear parking sensors. Interesting to note that the seller did take the car in for a bunch of repairs before listing it as seller’s usually do the opposite when trying to sell an old German car. I personally dig it and think this could be a great daily driver if you want all the modern luxuries but still want great MPGs. The question is, how much?

I have no real idea how to value this. Pre-facelift W220s are basically worth nothing, but the W211 E-Class diesel cars have a cult following because of their engine. The market has to be extremely small, but I suppose it only takes two people to drive the price up. I think anything over $7,500 probably isn’t worth it, but I think the seller has a much bigger number in mind.

1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Coupe

Last month I looked at a Mercedes-Benz W140 Coupe in a 1999 CL500 that not only looked great, but had a really reasonable asking price as well. Needless to say, it didn’t last all that long as someone else must of saw the value in it. Today, I wanted to go even further up market and check out a very low-mile 1996 S600 Coupe up for sale in New Jersey. Just as a refresher, Mercedes produced just over 8,500 of the V12-powered 600SEC/S600 Coupe/CL600 models for worldwide sale over an eight-year production period so they are relatively rare compared to the 36,000 examples of the V12 sedan. To find one with just 36,000 miles as this one has isn’t an easy task. However, that certainly means you are going to pay a premium. A big one.

There’s not a lot to dislike about this one. It surely looks the part of 36,000 miles and gains some extra points for having the 18″ AMG 5-spokes wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sports. Inside is classic 1990s Mercedes and this being a 1996, it is the first year of the mini-facelift that featured upgraded climate controls and a different shift pattern. This looks like a private seller, so I’m a little confused why they didn’t go into a little history about the car or at least highlight some of the heavy maintenance that I’m sure this car has. While these M120s are one of the best V12 engines ever produced in terms of durability and drama-free use, they are still V12s at the end of the day and require care beyond what you’d normally expect, even from a Mercedes.

Now the price. The ask of $26,000 is a big number for a W140 of any guise. However, there are examples out there pulling this kind of price. Yes, that one did have half the miles, but we are seeing some eye-popping numbers for sedans. So this car maybe not be priced as crazy as I thought to begin with. I do think however some thorough due diligence is needed to even get near $20,000 on this one. The potential is there, but I think this one sits for awhile longer.
