1998 Mercedes-Benz SL600

Yellow is always a hit or miss color when it comes to German cars. Some cars it looks great on like a Porsche 930 or a Volkswagen GTI 20th Anniversary Edition. Other cars, maybe not so much. When it comes to yellow Mercedes-Benz, there aren’t a whole lot of them out there. This was a hot color in the 1960s and 1970s, but outside of the first-generation SLK and the new AMG GT, you won’t find many painted in this bright shade. When you do, it is literally just a handful of them and they were probably painted that way by special request. Today car, the king R129 SL600, is painted in the factory Yellowstone 685. At least that is how it sits now. Let me explain.

For sale is my 1998 Mercedes Benz SL600 Lorinser. You would be very hard pressed to ever find another yellow R129 for sale in the states, especially with the legendary V12 motor and Lorinser kit as this one does. This car also comes equipped with the very rare and desirable two piece, staggered AMG monoblock wheels. The front bumper, rear bumper, spoiler, and exhaust are all authentic and original Lorinser parts (side skirt is AMG). The car does come with the original windscreen which can be secured in the trunk when not in use. The convertible top is in excellent condition and all the motors work great, many of which have been rebuilt/replaced within the last few months. I have service receipts totaling over $6,000 in work that I’ve had done to this car to keep it in top running condition. The car wears a full set of brand new Continental Extremecontact Sport tires. The leather is in excellent condition with no tears or discoloring. The woodgrain is all in tact with no discoloring, however, some hair line cracks are visible on the steering wheel from the heat over the years. I am the third owner and had planned to keep this car in my collection. Unfortunately, I can’t keep them all and I have another R129 in the stable already. The original owner is rumored to be Luis Castillo from the Marlins late 90s team although I have no service records from that time and due to privacy laws am unable to attain any with his name on them. The second owner was the owner of multiple golf courses and used it as a weekend leisure vehicle. The R129 Mercedes is appreciating in value and is sure to become another classic amongst it’s SL predecessors which have all become collectibles. Over the years I have owned 5 R129s total and can attest that this is one of the most rare and well kept examples out there.

This 1998 SL600 hails from the collection of a guy in Virginia that we’ve featured before with his W140 S420, W140 S500 and W210 E55 AMG. All of his cars are pretty interesting and in above-average condition and this M120-powered monster is no different. If it looks a bit different, that is because the front and rear bumpers along with the spoiler and exhaust are all from Lorinser. These all look like factory parts by their styling and fitment, just a different look that what you are used to normally seeing. I mentioned earlier that although this car is painted in Yellowstone as it sits right now, I have a suspicion it this isn’t the factory color. When I run the data card on this SL600, the color comes back as Neve White 143. Just for curiosity’s sake, I found two other yellow R129s and ran their VINs and both of those cars came back as Yellowstone 685. My theory is that when the car got the body work, it was probably entirely repainted in Yellowstone by the original owner, former Major League Baseball player Luis Castillo. Never underestimate the ways a professional athlete can blow money, especially when it comes to cars. Does this matter in the grand scheme of things? In my eyes, probably not that much. If you are someone who wants a yellow Mercedes V12 roadster, this is it.

The seller has this priced at $26,900 which I think is in the ballpark for what this car is worth. Clean V12 R129s aren’t getting any cheaper and the ones with desirable options, like this one, are going to be in demand. I think it is going to take a special buyer to throw down the money, but that person is out there somewhere. I think even if this car was black or silver it would still command this price tag because of what it is, but I think this one will eventually sell. Probably not tomorrow and probably not in a week, but someone out there will love this one. As long as they love yellow.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300GD

Now that it is the middle of August and it could snow next week for all we know, I have to start thinking about my winter vehicle situation. My trusty Land Rover Discovery 1 that I’ve had for the past 12 years probably won’t see the flakes fly because I think some coolant is leaking into the cylinders and that is a problem. Because a Discovery with 180,000 miles that has been in Pennsylvania for the past 12 years is worth roughly the price of a used lawnmower, which I’m sure people on Craigslist will offer up for trade, it isn’t worth pulling the heads and fixing. This of course has led me to shopping for G-Wagens. The sensible decision would be to find a decent Land Cruiser/Lexus LX and never lose a dime on it while being 100% reliable, but the crazy person in me says go find a G-Wagen because that is what I really want at the end of the day.

During my search for the perfect G, I came across this wild example up for sale in Canada. You might notice it is quite a bit longer and has a few more seats. This  W460 300GD was cut up and lengthened a massive 32 inches. This added room for another row of seats while still keeping a healthy amount of space in the rear. The fit and finish look great along with basically everything else on this G. But I have to ask, why?

This is ONE-OF-A-KIND Mercedes G-Wagon TD300 XXL, which was extended by 80cm and added 3 row sitting. The custom works was done by Mercedes’s own G-Center in Europe. Where possible, all interior were kept as original, with the exception of newly leather wrapped on all seats and door panels.
You will not find another unique G-Wagon in North America, this is definately one of a kind. Mechanical is in excellent condition with Mercedes’s extremely reliable Turbo Diesel 3.0 Liter Engine and 4 Speeds Automatic Transmission. All buttons and heating works, and there is absolutely no rust on body. Please contact me if you have any questions or need to see more pictures…. Thanks.
If you win, I will need $2000 deposit withing 24 hours, else item will be relisted after 24 hrs.

I get why you would do this in theory, but why you would pick an automatic 300GD as the donor vehicle is puzzling to me. The OM617 barely has enough power to get this refrigerator on wheels moving in stock form, let along adding a bunch of more weight with metal and seats along with giant tires as well. I can’t imagine how bad this thing would struggle going up any kind of grade and then add in the weight of possibly six people? Good luck. Other than the terrible choice of engine, the rest of this crazy conversion looks damn near perfect. The shop that did this conversion in Holland pumps out crazy stuff like this on the regular so I have no qualms with the long-term durability of this project.

It is pretty tough to value something like this and I suppose $70,000 is a fair ask seeing what went into this G. You figure a nice 300GD is around $25,000 right now and I’m sure the labor and materials were a monstrous amount. Doing the quick math, you can see how they got to this $70,000. I can’t imagine this thing can work for too many people because just trying to find a spot to park it becomes a chore so this one might sit for a while. Cool project, just not very practical at all.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 400SEL

There is something to be said about understated cars. Look at the current offerings around the automotive world and it seems like every single car has to be edgy and aggressive just to move the needle a little. Hell, look at the new Toyota Camry. This was a car that was the almost the literal definition of conservative and blending in, but now it has so many hard edges and design quirks that you’d think the designers at Toyota have gone crazy. It isn’t just the Camry, it is almost every other new car out there as well. A new Honda Accord? Random lines and curves going everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t anything really incorrect or bad about these cars, they are actually quite good cars, but subdued they are not. Sign of the times, I suppose.

That brings me to today’s car: the Mercedes-Benz W140 and this specific 400SEL up for sale in Canada. I’ve looked at more W140s that I can remember right now but this one has me looking at it a little differently for some reason. Maybe it is the Smoke Silver Metallic paint with the contrasting lower molding, but everything on the exterior of this car (outside of the hood star) just functions without any drama. The way that Mercedes shaped the end of the hood to cover up the wipers for less drag and a cleaner look. Even the taillights are molded the way they are because Mercedes studied how this specific design was easier to see as opposed to just a flat surface. All this is just the tip of the iceberg with the W140. I guess they didn’t spend a billion dollars to develop this car for nothing.

This is a very low mileage, very well preserved 1993 MERCEDES BENZ 400SEL. One owner, only 71,600 Kms (44,500 Miles) since new. It was sold new in Vancouver, BC Canada and it has lived pampered life, always garaged, always serviced on time. The paint, interior, everything is in excellent condition. There is a slight damage om the right rear quarter and door, please see last picture. Everything works, including the AC, windows door locks, etc. The tires are Michelin and the thread is deep. The car is currently registered in British Columbia, Canada. It drives great – powerful and smooth. Service history from Mercedes-Benz dealer is available. A few thing of note – the wiring harness was replaced by Mercedes dealer, the throttle actuator was replaced as well. As it can be seen from the photographs, it is excellent, well-preserved condition. Perfect?? – No, but pretty close.

Complete safety and mechanical inspections were performed on this vehicle as part of our reconditioning process. This vehicle is fully operational and can be driven anywhere. No oil leaks.

Yes, the exterior of this car shines well and is very clean for its age, but the real prize is what is inside this 400SEL. It is almost a time capsule with how well everything has been preserved and taken care of. This truly shows you what was so great about a brand new S-Class from this era and why people paid so much money for them. Every single button has a place and function without looking messy or clutted. No quirky designs or giant knobs, just mechanical bliss. Is this a 100% perfect car? No, but it is close. The 500SEL badge is really odd and it has some scuffs on the bumpers along with the rear door. Other than that, I really think this one is a gem.

The value on this one is a bit tricky because it is a Canadian-spec car. It is old enough to be legally imported into the United States with just a couple of pieces of paper, but it always going to have that KM gauge cluster. If you want a W140 that is going to be a collector car that you can still enjoy from time to time, this is the kind of examples that will do well in the long run. It isn’t a Grand Edition or S600, but it is great because it shows what was, not what currently it is after many hard years of work. I don’t think the $11,900 asking price is too out of line, but I’m never one to pay full price. I think anything under $10,000 you could say it was well bought, but in the mid-teens I’m probably looking for a S600. No knock on this car though because it really is a true gem.

1979 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

Last week I checked out a cherry 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD that was had a few small issues, but I felt was worth the money. Sadly, it looks like the seller cut the auction short so we didn’t find out what the final selling price was. Today, I ran across another 300CD, but this one is a few years older and a little different. This 1979 up for sale in California uses the non-turbo OM617, which is a fine enough engine in itself, doesn’t have any rust and by some kind of miracle, has a functioning air condition. It also has a nice touch with the European headlights and the best part? It has quite the attractive price tag.

Mercedes 300CD Coupe, Mechanically great, AC Blow’s very cold, Heater works, No leaks and runs excellent. Rust free, Original paint, good interior, tires and brakes. 168k original miles. Recent service. Car needs nothing.

We recommend centraldispatch.com for domestic shipping, we do not charge commissions on shipping.
We recommend wcshipping.com for international shipping.

Payment is due in 3 Business days, Period. I work with all major logistics companies in California and will send title and bill of sale same day as payment. I will work with all out of area buyers with their transportation needs. I will do everything needed to insure you get your car asap. California resident’s are required to pay tax per state law. Out of state or country no tax due upon purchase, you pay taxes according to your state or country laws. All sales final. We do not sell vehicles to State of Florida.

I dig these non-turbo coupes just as much as the later model one because of their uniqueness. I’m fully on board with hubcaps over Bundt wheels because owning a Mercedes with Bundts, I’m literally cleaning them once a week because of how much brake dust they amass. My hubcap car? They look the same no matter what. I’m sure the wheels under the hubcap is filthy, but what do I care? I look at the non-turbo OM617 engine as a nice middle ground between the under-powered OM616 and the turbo OM617 that is prone to oil leaks around everything related to the turbo. (Ask me how I know.) Of course, the major downside to these early W123s is the sad excuse for a climate control system that was borrowed from Chrysler. (Again, ask me how I know.) If it is working, like it is in this car, count your blessings and hope to stays that way. There are some solutions out there to fix these when they go south, but a lot times it is related to things inside the dash that these aftermarket systems can’t help with. If that is the case, you just deal with it. The rest of the car looks pretty good with a few little odds and ends missing, but overall it is a nice example.

I think $4,250 is a more than fair price for this car. You could buy it, drive it for another 50,000 miles and probably sell it for the same price. Usually they are priced closer to what last weeks 300CD was and for good reason. These coupes will never go out of style as long as you keep up with them and this car is no different. If this was closer to me I would be really tempted to go see it and try to work out a deal on it, but alas, California wins again.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C400

Outside of some exceptionally rare or select AMGs, I don’t really feature a lot of new Mercedes-Benz cars. One big reason is that while this stuff is cool and all, they aren’t all that interesting to me. Another big reason being is that they are all quite common and you can just head down to your local dealer and dodge sales representatives until they figure out you can’t afford anything. After they realize that, their brain tuns to them saying ”Have you ever considered leasing a car?” while you scurry away. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with these newer cars, but for me, I enjoy my aged vehicles.

Today, I happen to come across a newer, non-AMG, C-Class that peaked my interest because of two things. First being it offers surprisingly great performance numbers and second, it’s amazing depreciation for being only a few years old. This 2015 C400 up for sale in Connecticut is probably the best bargin W205 on the market right now, if not the best bang for the buck newer Mercedes. Let me explain why.

A great opportunity to get this car for half its original sticker price. Not your average C-class. AMG performance without the high maintenance costs!

Specs:

Twin Turbo 3.0L V6 (M276 motor used across many Mercedes vehicles)

329 hp. 362 lb-ft

0-60mph in 4.6 seconds

21/29 MPG

Service History:

Adult owned and dealer maintained. I am the 2nd owner and purchased from BMW Gallery of Norwood, MA. The original owner traded it in to the dealership with about 48,244 miles on the clock in immaculate condition (the plastic wrap from the factory was still on the passenger door sills). It literally looked like a brand-new car inside. Full service records are available at any Mercedes dealership up to 50,000 miles. I personally performed the most recent oil change myself as these V6 motors are incredibly easy to do yourself. Rest assured, I am a motorcycle mechanic and have been working on cars since before I could drive so I perform all service myself, on all of my vehicles.

Irdium Silver Metallic $720

AMG Appearance Package with 18” AMG 5-Spoke Alloy Wheels

Run-flat Tires

Black Ash Interior Wood Trim

Burmester Premium Sound system (incredible by the way)

VIN Etching $300

What makes this car so special?

Well its got the styling of the C300 but an AMG motor in it. For those that don’t know, the C400 was made for one year where it was replaced with the C450 AMG in 2016. Same motor with a different tune. A few years later they introduced the C43 AMG which is also the same motor with a different tune again. Both of these cars are still $10-20k more on the used market but have nearly identical performance to this car. I was tempted to buy a tune for it but never got around to it. For about $1000, you can gain about 80hp and over 100lb*ft of torque. Other cool features include 4 independent LED headlights that move when you put your turn signals on or come up to a curve in the road. Ventilated leather seats (which are hard to find). Most models feature a synthetic leather. Nice looking flat bottom steering wheel compliments one of the nicest interiors in a car I have ever seen. Also, the panoramic sunroof is awesome. The backseat feels so much bigger when you have a sunroof right above your head.

Why are you selling it if its such a great car?

Well, I am purchasing a new home and have a lot of upcoming projects that I’d like to spend the money on instead. If I could, I would not be selling it.

Does it have any flaws?

Yes just 1 thing. The passenger side rear speaker cover on the door is dented from a friend of mine getting out and pushing the door open by the speaker cover. I will be replacing it before it is sold but due to the sound system being a Burmester (very high end German brand) the cover was ordered from Germany and has not arrived yet. The cover is machined stainless steel with laser etching.

Yea, but how is it on gas?

Surprisingly good for the performance. On my daily commute, I get 33mpg which is mostly highway. Since I purchased it my overall average is 29MPG.

Will you ship the car?

Sure, after its paid in full. I can arrange the shipment and get you quotes.

Can I come test drive it?

Absolutely, bring the cash for me to hang on to and you can go for a spin. Otherwise, I will do the driving and take you for a ride.

Will you trade for my straight piped Subaru with mudflaps, coilovers and a roofrack?

Ummmmm, no. I’ll trade for cash or cashiers checks only.

The windows look tinted, are they?

Yes. 35% tint is professionally installed on rear and side windows.

Please feel free to message me for more info or give me a call/text! Thanks for looking!

Think of this car as the BMW 335i of the Mercedes world. For whatever reason, the C400 was blessed with a 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 that made 329 horsepower and 362 lb-ft of torque. Good numbers for sure, but since this is a 4Matic car, you can get it to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds. On top of that, you get a great looking car both inside and out. Yes, some of the materials will remind you that this is still a C-Class, but Mercedes did a nice job to offer really premium stuff like dynamic LED headlights that curve and Burmester audio equipment. This car was optioned out to over $58,000 when it was new and you can see why with its vast equipment list that the seller spells out.

As big as that $58,500 was when new, only three years later it is offered at $27,880. That means in a little under three years, this car has lost 53% from it’s selling price. That is crazy to me on a C-Class. I’ve said this before, we probably wouldn’t buy any German car if we wanted to make the best possible financial decisions when buying a car, but this one just makes my head spin. This is obviously great news for anyone in the market for a car like this, but you have to wonder if this value free fall will continue. A quick look around at other W205s for sale tells it probably will, but if you wanted a fast, under the radar Mercedes without AMG prices, this one wouldn’t be a bad choice.

John Lennon’s 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300TD

I feature famous owner Mercedes-Benz from time to time with the scale of their ”famousness” ranging from Rowan Atkinson, Clark Gable, Bono and even Elvis. Personally, I just don’t believe that these names do a lot, or anything, for the values of the cars outside of it being just a cool side note. Maybe with some of the Elvis cars it might move the needle at little, but his star is fading as the years go by and the people who truly remember him are also fading away. Today, I have a car that you could argue is on the A-list when it comes to celebrity cars. This is John Lennon’s 1979 300TD. You might remember him as the co-founder of the The Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. His fame was tremendous until the day of his murder on December 8, 1980 and judging by how much media attention he and his family still gets just by throwing his name into Google, is still quite relevant.  You would guess that maybe this car, a car that he owned until his death, is probably going to bring big money, right?

• Ordered at Yoko Ono’s request by John Lennon’s Personal Assistant in late 1978

2,998 cc SOHC inline five-cylinder turbodiesel engine, mechanical fuel injection, 77 HP at 4,000 RPM, four-speed automatic transmission, independent suspension, four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes; wheelbase: 2,800 mm (110.24”)

Introduced in 1975 for a 1976 model-year sales debut, the new mid-size W123-series cars from Mercedes-Benz succeeded both the W114 and W115 model lines at one stroke. The W123 cars were highly popular and in its many individual models, served as the marque’s most important line through 1985. A triumph of evolution rather than revolution, the W123 line was relentlessly developed throughout production and marks perhaps the ultimate expression of Mercedes’ renowned quality.

Offered in Coupe, Sedan, and Station Wagon forms, the highly versatile basic W123 design was also available in short- and long-wheelbase chassis form intended for specialized bodywork including ambulances, commercial, and police vehicles. A broad range of gasoline, Diesel, and Turbodiesel engines was rolled out throughout the W123 production and provided strong performance, economy, and flexibility to suit a wide range of buyer needs. Limousine builders naturally gravitated to the basic W123 chassis, but eager to preserve its stellar reputation for quality, Mercedes-Benz produced its own factory-built limousines on the long-wheelbase (3,425 mm or nearly 135 inches) W123 chassis, in both gasoline-powered and five-cylinder diesel-powered 300D versions from September 1977 through late-1985. In 300T Station Wagon form, the W123 series exuded a particularly strong aura of practical elegance. Predictably, these low-profile, yet top-quality vehicles were used by the top business, social, and entertainment-industry luminaries of the era.

This 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Estate Wagon is particularly fascinating and well-documented as the last automobile ever used by musical and cultural icon John Lennon. Ordered at Yoko Ono’s request by John Lennon’s personal assistant, Fredric Seaman in late 1978. Mr. Seaman, who wrote the book “The Last Days of John Lennon,” made several references in this intimate memoir to Mr. Lennon’s use of this specific car as his personal transportation and to move his equipment and transport his guitars to the recording studios including The Hit Factory and The Record Plant. Even the master tapes of his last album, “Double Fantasy,” were loaded and taken to The Record Plant from The Hit Factory in this 300TD. When John Lennon was shockingly murdered on the night of December 8, 1980 at the Dakota, where he and his family resided, this 300TD was parked in the building’s garage.

In addition to Fredric Seaman’s book, this Mercedes-Benz 300TD Estate Wagon is documented with a copy of the original Data Card supplied by Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. It was put on display at the Legends Museum in Nashville. The car remained on display there until 1997, when it went to a classic car museum in Toronto, Canada. This vehicle was also the subject of the History Channel’s “’Lost and Found” show (Episode 53, aired December 18, 2000). Displayed at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum since 2005, it benefits from an older repaint with upgraded wheels, remains in remarkably good condition, and is reported by the consignor to drive well. As offered, this outstanding find is an exciting piece of musical, social and automotive history.

Here is the thing about this car: it is extremely average. The lower front air dam is all smashed in, the suspension seems to be sitting too low, the interior is filthy, the wood is cracking, it has a bunch of aftermarket speakers in it and there is some non-factory bits under the hood. The car was only about two years old when Lennon was killed so at the time of his death, it was probably still really nice. If you planned on banking it as some kind of collector car, why would you let it fall into this condition? It isn’t like Lennon’s or The Beatles fame fell off the map between December 1980 and now, so if you knew this was his car, don’t smash it into things. I find it hard to believe that the auction house couldn’t be bothered to vacuum the carpets before photographing this car either if they are banking on it bringing big money. I highly doubt that is original John Lennon debris on the floor mat.

In terms of value, I see a problem with a car like this. You have two types of people interested in this car: Mercedes fans and John Lennon/Beatles fans. They probably don’t overlap all that much. The Mercedes fan (myself) sees this as an average 300TD. The Lennon/Beatles fan sees this as just one giant piece of personal memorabilia that they can actually show off to the world and not just hang in the basement or office. Does the Lennon/Beatles fan value this more than the Mercedes fan? Most certainly. Which is why that the auction house cares less about the condition this car is in. They are banking on a Baby Boomer with a bunch of money who still loves Lennon to want to bring this thing home and cruise around listing to a bunch of Lennon deep cuts reliving the glory days. How much will this car go for? I have no idea. I don’t follow the Lennon/Beatles memorabilia market but I am interested to see where it ends. Myself? I’ll let this one be.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

Probably one of the most overlooked or even forgotten supercars of the last decade is the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss. Lots of people thought it was only a concept car or maybe didn’t even know this car exists. That is totally understandable because only 75 of these cars exist and its lack of a windshield doesn’t scream factory production car. The quick backstory on the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss is that it is obviously based off the SLR but with totally radical styling done by Korean designer Yoon Il-hun. This car still has a bite to back up its bark with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph. The only way to obtain one of these cars was to be a current SLR owner and write a check for an even $1,000,000. If you are wondering why you’ve never seen one of these cruising around Beverly Hills or South Beach, Miami, it’s because they were never sold in America so a trip to Monaco is in order if you want to see one of these trying to squeeze into a parking spot surrounded by a crowd of people filming it. The good news is that if you were thinking about importing one to the United States, it is possible with the proper paperwork and even more money. Want to import this example for sale in Germany? Bring a pen with a fine tip on it so you can fit all the zeros inside the little box on the check.

Year: 2009
Model: SLR McLaren Stirling Moss
Engine: 5.4 liter supercharged V8
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 964 km (599 mi)
Price: On Request

Reminiscent of the SLR racing sports car, the myth of the silver arrow and a tribute to Sir Stirling Moss: The Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss combines spectacular design with the most demanding technology and offers a unique driving experience for all the senses. A limited edition of just 75 vehicles, this is a high-class classic car for sportsmen and enthusiasts.

The newly developed shape of the SLR Stirling Moss conveys tremendous dynamics. The long engine hood, the vehicle body that merges optically with the interior and the compact, muscular tail illustrate the myth of the SLR in the same way as the long-drawn scoops with integrated roll bars behind the headrests, the facet-like, black painted ventilation grids on the side and the bonnet.

Very high side skirts, the powerfully contoured fender and the gull-wing doors that open to the front complete the emotional aesthetic of the SLR Stirling Moss. The so-called tonneau cover made of carbon can close the vehicle. When both the tonneau cover and the doors are closed, the SLR Stirling Moss looks like a sculpture.

Technically, the SLR Stirling Moss has inherited the best genes of the SLR family and benefits from Mercedes-Benz’ extensive experience. The body made from carbon, the newly developed monocoque, the extremely light 1,551 kg curb weight and excellent aerodynamics and safety mean that the SLR Stirling Moss brings you unlimited driving pleasure. The combination of new technology and historical class is beyond any doubt.

The SLR Stirling Moss gets its impressive performance of 478 kW / 650 hp from its AMG 5.5 litre supercharged V8 engine with a maximum torque of 820 NM, which accelerates the puristic sports car to a top speed of 350 km/h. Acute amazement and silence might best describe the reactions when the SLR Stirling Moss passes by. A closed underbody in connection with a massive diffuser ensures the necessary downforce, thus allowing for such dynamic sporty driving pleasure.

The interior is designed to be as puristic as the exterior: The interior has been reduced to the essentials. Valuable materials used in the interior underline the unique character of the SLR Stirling Moss. On the underside of the gear knob, the engraved signature of the eponym in aluminium is also the name of the man who let this vehicle become a classic car. Bodywork that, while giving the impression of being monolithic with historical elements such as the scoop made of carbon, reflects the perfectly staged combination of a nostalgic racing car and a modern supercar design.

The vehicle on sale here is a car that was destined for the German market and was delivered to its first owner, a collector known well beyond the borders of Germany, in December 2009. The collector initially decided not to register the car for road use and put the Stirling Moss in his private museum. Over 2 years later, in the spring of 2012, the time had finally come to register the SLR for the first time making it ready to take its first trip. However, this collector’s item was only moved cautiously and to a very low extent in the following six years, therefore, today the car has just 964 km on the clock. The owner history also shows absolutely no change and this SLR still presents itself as a first-hand vehicle. The vehicle is available immediately and can be viewed in our showroom at any time upon request.

For further information, please contact our sales team.

This car is wild in every sense of the word. I’m guessing that those little tiny pieces of glass make it possible to drive this thing at moderate speeds without needing some kind of face or eye protection based on the number of photos I see of people driving this way. Still, I have to think that you’ll be eating bugs or even worse, road debris, that you’ll be exposed to non-stop when driving this car. Mercedes probably knew that these would be show pieces or parade lap cars when they built them so it wasn’t a huge deal with buyers. I’d guess the other 74 cars have similar mileage to this one (599 mi) because of the crazy cost when new and even the larger costs now.

This price for this example isn’t listed but based on other examples that have sold, $3,000,000 seems to be the magic number. Compared that to the possible $5,000,000 that the CLK-GTR is expected to bring and this seems like a real a bargain. If my net worth is in the hundreds of millions, snagging one of these wouldn’t be a bad idea as both a cool show piece and an investment. I doubt these will ever be cheaper.

El Presidente? 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Coupe

Another Mercedes-Benz, another reported former owner who was a leader of a country. According to the seller, this 1996 250SE Coupe was owned Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos. I thought it would be neat to maybe find a photo of him with this car because presidents seem to have their photo taken a lot. (Speaking of, this is a really iconic photo of Mateos riding in an Adenauer cabriolet with JFK.) During my quick research of Mateos, I noticed he died in September of 1969. The seller mentioned that he owned this car in the 1980s. This is why I always say ”According to the seller”. I nicely presented these findings to the seller and he urged me to see if I could find any more information since I was already three pages deep in my Google searching. Turns out, a Mexican website is representing another 250SE, a white 1965, as Mateos car as well. Clearly it is not the same car. This is why it is always a good idea to do your own research before spending a bunch of money on a car or writing about it on the internet. Anyway, this W111 is a European-spec car mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox that needs a whole lot of help. Much to my surprise, it seems like there are plenty of people out there willing to give it such help based on the bidding.

They say every car has a story; Although I don’t have documents to substantiate it, but I think it’s worth telling!

Owned by one of Mexico’s presidents “Adolfo Lopez Mateos” In the 80’s , it was then sold to an Argentinian composer/song writer called “Bebu silvetti” whom brought it to southern California in the mid-eighties. He Enjoyed Driving it for a while and in the early 2000 he commissioned the restoration to a master coach builder “Sebastian Dominguez coachwork & restoration” in Los Angeles area to restore it. Restoration was started, Fenders were dipped to bare metal, however process was stopped due to silvetti’s health issues and it was put away in storage where it sat for last 12+ years. Silvetti passed away and restoration was canceled.

After 12+ years of hibernation!, I acquired the car and I had The following performed: Complete brake job including all four calipers and brake lines as needed. Rebuild shifter bushing and slave pump, Rebuilt rear Shock stabilizer assembly, flushed radiator, new fuel pump, flushed gas tank, new gas lines and other needed rubber hoses to make it run. It is now running & driving car. It shifts through all gears and idles however it is still in need of fine tuning. Wheels are aluminum and tires are old. It’s blue, Blue leather interior is in need of replacement and is original, the wood dash is complete and in need of varnishing and some repairs. Sunroof works although a bit slow. All lights work, Mexican-Becker original radio in the dash but not working. As far as rust is concerned; there is rust in bottom of rear ¼ panels and both front rails under the front fenders. The rest of the car is solid, no sign of rust on frame or rest of the body. Doors shut like a Mercedes door! Great car to restore while being driven! An original and unmolested car. Clear California title.

Please ask questions before you place your bid. Inspection are welcome by appointment. Located in tustin/irvine California. Please only bid if you are ready to purchase and have the funds available. All payments are required in certified funds. Once all payments are made, the vehicle and title will be released. California residents are required to pay California State sales tax and registration fees. Out-of-State buyers taking delivery of vehicles in California are required to pay their state applicable taxes. The buyer is responsible for all shipping costs. This vehicle is being sold “AS IS” condition.Seller is not responsible for the accuracy of the description, buyer to do their own due-diligence. Licensed and bonded dealer in the state of California commissioned this listing and all transactions state Laws apply. shipping assistance at buyers cost

This is a really interesting situation. The seller did go through some of the mechanical to get it running and driving, but the cosmetics are a total nightmare. The poor leather and wood needs a total overall, which isn’t cheap, and the body work isn’t in great shape either. I’ve seen worse, but there is some metal work that needs to be done to patch some holes and from there it is a whole lot of sanding. The really good news is that almost everything looks complete and there isn’t a lot that needs to be sourced. All that cracked wood can be sent out to the professionals to let them rework it and it will return a few months later with a bill for over a $1,000. No one ever said Mercedes restoration was cheap. The same can be said about the body. This isn’t going to be a fast process or a cheap one at all. The thing that I don’t understand is why the bidding is currently where it is at.

The current market for a nice 250SE Coupe hangs around that $30,000 mark and has been there for a long time. Some you can find a little cheaper, some a little more expensive if they have really low miles but they really don’t go much over $50,000 for the nicest ones. The bidding is currently at $17,600 for this car which means if you wanted to break-even on this project, you are maybe budging another $10,000 for a whole lot of labor and parts. I don’t think you could make this car look great for $10,000. Maybe the bidders are banking on the false presidential past and it being a Euro car to boost its value a little, but this one has me scratching my head. I think I’d let this one pass and just buy a car that is already done.

Update: This car is back up for sale from a new owner with a nice detail and a laundry list of maintenance completed.  Almost no miles were added but the price has been raised to $11,500. Check it out here

It is all about the details for me. I have seen enough of the same cars day after day that all look they pretty much look the same to me. Unless of course a car sticks out for one reason or two. It could be a unique color, it could be a rare-spec with interesting options or it could be the entire car is something I haven’t seen pop up for sale. Today’s car, a European-spec 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SE for sale in California, has the entire package of coolness that I just have to take a close look at it. Judging by the photo above, you can tell this one is going to be good.

Rare 1983 500 SE European Model imported from Germany back in the 80’s by the current
long term owner. Smog checked 4 month ago. Cypress Green, 0riginal Paint , Airbag
Heated Front seats, special wheels with good tires, runs great, lots of power, Clean inside and out.
What is not working now: Air conditioner. radio antenna

This standard wheelbase W126 comes painted in the lovely Cypress Green Metallic with matching SSR Forumla Mesh wheels. I have to admit, I am not much for any kind of aftermarket wheels, but these period-correct SSRs with the giant lip in the rear look great on this car. Another thing to note is that even though that North American-spec bumpers look same as European-spec cars on the W126, the Euro bumpers are actually a tad shorter. To your eye, this makes the car seem much more compact and in my opinion, it makes the entire package look that much better. Inside, you have velour seats with matching door panels that look and feel even better compared to the leather you are used to in these cars. This 500SE even has an airbag steering wheel which wasn’t available on the W126 until the face lift in 1986 for the North American cars. Under the hood, this M117 should have around 240 horsepower compared to the normal 200 you would expect. It is all these little things that add up to make this car just that more interesting, at least to me.

The asking price for this car is $7,900 and I don’t know how I feel about that. This is a really unique car that appeals to a very small group of people who know what is it and are interesting in buying it. Is it worth that? Probably. Will it sell soon for that? I wouldn’t bet on it. $7,900 buys you a lot of cool cars in that area of the country and unless you are a big Mercedes or W126 fan, I think you look elsewhere for your kicks. The real value of this car is to a person who appreciates all these things, not someone who is totally new to these cars. I think eventually it will find a good home, but this likely won’t be a quick sale.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E

About two weeks ago I looked at a really nice Mercedes-Benz 400SEL up for sale in Canada that I felt was just a sublime car. Nothing was crazy or ostentatious, it was just a beautifully built car. Today, I wanted to look at another 1993 V8 Mercedes up for sale in Canada but this time it is the slightly smaller 400E. I’ve gone on before about how the W124 400E/420E is often lost in the crowd thanks to the legendary 500E and always in-demand E320 Cabriolet, but it seems like the really nice examples of these cars are starting to pop up more often. This one painted in Dark Grey Metallic with black leather interior is not a perfect car by any means, but is just as functional and probably a lot more fun than the 400SEL from a few weeks ago. My advice? Snag one of these now if you want one because they aren’t getting any cheaper.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E on eBay

Model: 400E
Engine: 4.2 liter V8
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: 130,318 km (80,975 mi)
Price: Reserve Auction

This 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E shows only 80,975 miles (130,318 KM) and is powered by a 4.2-liter M119 V8 factory rated at 275 HP and

295 lb/ft, paired to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car has had only one owner since being sold new in Vancouver BC. Recent

maintenance included an ignition tune-up, oil change and full mechanical inspection. Although paper copies of service history were not kept,

client records show the car has been regularly serviced at Boundary Road Mercedes-Benz in Vancouver BC for many years. This W124 retains

all original paint from front to rear with lighter-colored satin finish body cladding completing the classic and desirable Mercedes-Benz

appearance. The factory 15” alloys show some minor curb rash but has a matching full size spare in the trunk in perfect condition along with

tools and jack. The paint has retained a rich, deep gloss and is free of any major defects. Bronze window trim finishes beautifully against the

grey metallic paint and is great condition with no signs of corrosion. The car is 100% rust free. The original windshield is free of any chips or

pitting. The black leather interior features dual airbags, power and heated seats, power tilt steering wheel, power mirrors, power locks, power

windows, rear sunshade, rear folding headrests and sunroof. The original radio and speakers sound great with a working power antenna. No

electrical issues inside are present, everything works as it should. With the exception of a hairline crack in the wood trim around the shiftier,

the interior of the 400E is in exceptional condition.

At 25 Years of age, this W124 is eligible for Collector Status and DOT exempt importation into the United States. We are specialists in vehicle

importation and can help buyers through the easy process.

I think the majority of people would pick a facelifted W124 over a pre-facelift car like this one, but these pre-facelift cars are growing on me. I think if you look at them purely as functional machines, the early W124s make bunch of sense and you understand why they look like they do. It is hard to believe a car like this is 25-years old, but thankfully this one looks like it has had a nice life and the real beauty of the W124 is that it can exist for another 25 years looking just the same. There is a coupe spots on the wood where it is cracked and the clear coat is peeling, but other than that I’m not seeing a whole lot of drawbacks with this one. The 81,000 miles is a great mileage where it is just high enough where you don’t feel guilty about adding more but not so high that all the components of this car are nearing the end of their life.

If you put a gun to my head and make me pick between this car and the 400SEL, I’d have a really tough time picking. This 400E is much more of a sports sedan than the W140, as it should be, and is suited towards a driver who wants a much more nimble car. The 400SEL is a car you want to drive in total relaxation but at the same time have the grunt and passing power when needed. As for where this auction will end, it wouldn’t shock me to see $10,000. Because this car is 25-years old, you can drive it into America and own it with a couple of pieces of paper so there will probably be a good number of American bidders trying to grab this one. I can’t wait to see where this one ends.

Feature Listing: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E with 350,000 miles

I’ve proclaimed my love before of ultra-high mileage Mercedes-Benz by fawning over a 2003 G500 with 318,000 miles and a 1980 300D with 585,000 miles, but today’s car is something I didn’t expect to see with a ‘3’ as the first digit on the odometer. I shouldn’t be all that surprised since it is a W124 and there is a probably one right now being used as a taxi somewhere in Africa with somewhere over 600,000 miles on it. You think I’m kidding? What did surprise me is that this particular W124 with over 350,000 miles is none other than the legendary 500E. This is the highest mileage .036 I’ve run across in as many years as I can remember because since the day this car rolled off the production line in Zuffenhausen, they’ve always been expensive and collectible cars. The nearly $82,000 window sticker in 1993 and the current market prices for these cars have kept them in the hands of loving owners who often have more cars than they have pairs of shoes. This of course keeps miles off these in general because of how special they are and also the fact that some 500E specific parts are rather pricey and not the easiest to source thanks to a lot of little pieces being no longer available. From afar, this DB702 Smoke Silver over Parchment 500E up for sale in Portland, Oregon doesn’t show one-bit of its mega miles and I’m quite impressed with its condition even for being in California for almost its entire life:

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E on Portland Craigslist

Year: 1993
Model: 500E

Price: $14,000

If you’re looking at this ad, you know exactly what this car is. If you aren’t aware of what makes this car special, these were built at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen outside of Stuttgart. They were assembled with wider front fenders, SL500 suspension and brakes, as well as the twin cam 32V 5.0 V8 from the same car. This is a factory hot rod in an era where a new Corvette made 300hp, or less than the 322 ponies in this car. They imported roughly 500 of these a year so they are quite rare.

This particular model is Smoke Silver Metallic with Parchment leather. The power seats completely work including headrests and memory function. The driver seat was upholstered with the factory leather cover a couple of years ago. The automatic climate control works well in all functions. The heated seats also function well. There are no warning lights on in the gauge cluster. This model also has the CD Changer installed and working with the working Becker Grand Prix 2000 cassette stereo. The gentleman that owned this car traveled quite a bit for business and this was his travel 500E for his occupation, hence the miles. The rear suspension has been serviced with necessary components replaced to insure that the load leveling functions are fully operational. Paint is ok. What I mean by that is that the upper surfaces have some sunburn areas. It’s not perfect. With that said, the bumpers have the original VIN stickers so that tells me that there aren’t any accidents because bumpers only have VIN stickers when they are new. This car also still has the original wheels. While I would agree that the 18″ AMG Aero Monoblock 2’s are the best looking wheel on this car, they aren’t the original wheels and they are getting harder to find.

I am the third owner of this car. I’ve loved these since they came out so of course I bought this when it became available to me. Then I told my wife. You can probably piece the rest of that story together.

The last owner resided in California as did the original owner. Because of this, the paint shows the effects of the California sun over the last 25 years. Add this to the mileage and the fact that I HAVE to sell it, and you can understand why this 500E is priced aggressively. It’s unfortunate really as this is one of my “bucket-list” cars and will probably go on my “list of automotive regrets” (cars you sold that you shouldn’t have like that 67 VW Deluxe Bus and 89 E30 M3) when it sells.

There are a few minor things that should be disclosed:
Is it perfect? No. I’m sure it’s got a couple of oil leaks. It’s an old MB. They do that.
The power antenna doesn’t go up and down. I don’t use the FM.
The blower fan for the climate control squeaks at low fan speeds.

This car is ridiculously good for the age. These are of the “million mile Mercedes” era with tank like construction and are truly over-built.

From what I can see from the photos, this 500E came from a loving home and received the attention it probably commanded to get to this mileage. The seller tells you what you need to know about the cosmetic condition of the car and you can piece together the rest, but it is presentable and no way screams ”this car has 350,000 miles.” The exterior has a couple of love taps and the recovered drivers seat is a nice surprise but I am more impressed about the mechanicals. While the M119 is a hearty engine, it needs attention just like anything else. I’m sure this car has been through a few waterpumps, many hoses, enough oil to fill a 50 gallon drum, a bunch of suspension bits and if this car is still on its original transmission, it will be a miracle from the Mercedes gods. I don’t care if you are buying a 35,000 miles 500E or this one, it is highly recommended you get a pre-purchase inspection because these cars are capable of hiding five-figures worth of things that need addressed. I am not saying that is what is going on with this car, but given its extreme mileage, a simple peek under the hood and drive around the block isn’t advisable. The seller has indicated to us he is willing to work with the right buyer to make a deal happen.

Because of the high mileage, this 500E comes to market at a lower price point than many but it is not without competition. Legends rarely align with the moniker “cheap”. There is another 500E on the market right now with 200,000 miles in similar condition for $15,000 and some other ones floating out there for under $20,000 as well, but again a careful PPI could reveal thousands more in unknown work needed on those that isn’t shown in a profile shot. The 350,000 odometer reading is going to scare a bunch of people away right off the bat no matter the price and if you hit them again with the $14,000 ask many would probably scoff. But properly cared for, there are some people who would have no problem signing up for this 500E. If this car wasn’t 2,500 miles away from me, I’d entertain buying it because I think the .036 is just one of the ”most-own” Mercedes that you can experience for a year or probably keep for a lifetime. This one is an example how it’s possible.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

There isn’t a whole lot left to be said about the Mercedes-Benz W126 coupe and especially the 560SEC. But, I keep finding really nice examples of them for sale, so more words are needed. If you at the main body line in the photo above, you see how everything is perfect until you run into that big, clunky door handle. The designer of this car, the legendary Bruno Sacco, said that it is the only flaw in an otherwise nearly perfect design. Those door handles were not his idea, but rather the engineers that focused on safety and all the other stuff that ruins fun. Supposedly whatever the original design on paper was for this coupe wasn’t deemed safe and functional in a crash so they had to go with what you see today. Sacco even went as far as saying he wanted to have those door handles modified on his personal 560SEC just because it bugged him so much. I see his point and who am I to argue with the guy who designed some of the most iconic Mercedes ever?

1991 Mercedes Benz 560sec

This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC is finished in Black Pearl Metallic over black leather and carried an original MSRP of $86,555 according to the included window sticker. The car was first sold in California and was purchased by its second owner in 1996. The seller acquired the car from its second owner in late 2014, and it has stayed in California from new. The odometer now shows 147,560 miles, and power comes from a 5.6-liter V8 paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission. This W126 is described as stock aside from a Kenwood stereo head unit, and it was most recently serviced in August 2017 as detailed below. The car is now being offered with recent service records, factory books, a clear Carfax, and a clean California title.

The exterior is finished in Black Pearl Metallic, and a scrape on the front bumper below the passenger-side headlamp is shown in the gallery. The seller reports that all exterior lights are functional. Note the early 1990s-issue California plates front and rear.

This car utilizes a self-leveling rear suspension system, which reportedly works properly and is claimed to be leak-free. Pirelli P6 all-season tires were mounted on the polished OEM 15″ wheels just over a year ago.

The black leather cabin features dual power and heated front seats. A tear in the driver’s lower seat cushion can be seen and is also depicted in the gallery.

A Kenwood CD/MP3/USB/Blueetooth head unit is installed, while the rest of the interior has been kept stock. The heater, A/C, buttons, windows, and other features are claimed to function properly. The seller has added approximately 13k miles since late 2014, and the six-digit odometer currently shows 147,560 miles.

According to Mercedes, the naturally-aspirated 5.6-liter V8 produced 238 horsepower in US-spec cars when new. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission. On August 6, 2017 the car received a Mobil 1 synthetic oil change, a coolant system flush, a new air filter, and new transmission/differential/transaxle/power steering fluids. Complete service records from the past four years and a few receipts from the previous owner are included. This Mercedes passed a California emissions test in December 2017.

According to the original window sticker, this car is optioned with ASR Automatic Slip Control and carried a total MSRP of $86,555. Factory manuals also accompany the sale.

The accident-free Carfax dates back to November 1992 when the car had just under 19k miles. Southern California ownership is reported along with consistent odometer readings.

My car was previously featured on Bring A Trailer .com. The auction concluded Friday June 1st 2018 at a final bid of $10,000. Due to the buyer having some last minute financial difficulties, the sell fell through. BAT reached out to many back up bidders a few weeks after the buyer informed me of his situation at the moment. Unfortunately they had already struck deals with other sellers with C126 cars.

Please note that this is not a perfect concord car. It is a fantastic driver with zero mechanical issues. This car is almost 30 years old. The paint is in great shape for its age. I assume it’s been touched up over the course of its lifetime to remain in such good condition. Expect a blemish or two but nothing significant.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule an appointment to see the car.

This 1991 560SEC up for sale in California is in the tried and true Black Pearl Metallic over black leather. It’s classic, it looks great but it has a few flaws. There are some love taps on the bumpers, the wheels could use a refreshing, there is a small tear in the seat and the center console wood needs replaced. Other than that, sign me up. All of this stuff is minor and could be fixed in an afternoon, so I am not seeing a real downside to this car. The 147,000 miles are most than what I usually see on these big coupes, but this wouldn’t stop me from diving into this car. Even better, I think it is priced pretty competitively.

The seller has a Buy It Now of $11,500 on it and I think that is totally fair. You can’t find many 1991 560SECs for around $10,000 and if you do, they probably aren’t worth the trouble. I think you could probably even have this one as a daily driver and continue to pile on the miles without much guilt. I might pop open those valve covers to take a look at the timing chain guides, but even if they do need replaced it is worth spending the money. These aren’t getting any cheaper and I think demand is always going to be there for them. The C140 and C107 coupes just aren’t loved like the C126s and I am willing to bet it is going to stay that way. Grab your C126s while you can before they really get expensive.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E Sportline

Last week I went back-to-back with Mercedes-Benz V8 W124s with a high-mileage 500E and a 400E that ended up selling to one of our readers. I thought the 400E was a hell of a buy for the price it went for and probably one of the better deals I’ve seen in a while. Today, I figured I would round out the W124 sedan lineup with a 1992 300E. As you might have noticed by the title, this isn’t a standard 300E but rather the 300E Sportline. I’ve gone over what makes the Sportline special about a year ago, but the short of it is a bunch of suspension and steering changes along with a few interior bits to make this car feel, well, sporty. Sadly, no engine changes from the standard 3.0 liter M103, but you take what you can get when it comes to special editions and Mercedes-Benz. This example up for bid in Phoenix isn’t the most pristine Sportline I’ve come across, but it is rare enough to re-visit. As for the price, I think this one can be had for very little money.

1992 Mercedes Benz 300E
Very Clean! All Original! 1-Owner!
No Reserve Auction!

Here is a very clean and all original 1992 Mercedes Benz 300E. This is a very rare Sport Line Edition with special badging and quad seating package with rear center console. We are offering this vehicle on one of our no reserve auctions and we will sell to the high bidder. Please review the description and feel free to reach out for further information. I am open to ending the auction early if we can arrive at an agreeable price. The current condition of this vehicle makes it a great candidate for preservation in a garage as this rare model is hard to come by, or tune it up and drive it daily.

This exterior of this Benz is finished in charcoal grey metallic paint. The overall condition of the exterior is excellent for the age. There is evidence of previous paint work but all panels are original; and the paint match is excellent. Factory alloy wheels with a matching set of Michelin tires in excellent condition. All glass, plastics, lenses and trim are in good condition. All handles and latches are in good working order. The exterior is very nice looking and will stand tall at any Country Clubs valet.

The interior is in great condition as well; finished in parchment leather. The leather is in good condition throughout with no rips or tears. There is a minor blemish on the passenger rear seat, smaller than a dime. All other interior materials including dashboard, door panels, carpet, and other trim panels/pieces are in great condition. All climate control functions are in great working order with air blowing from selected vents. The AC and heat are working as they should. Other factory options including power seats, cruise control, vacuum locks, power windows, and Sunroof are all working as designed.

Mechanically speaking this vehicle is solid. It has been sitting for the past year and will need a tune up. It does start very easily, idles smooth and does not appear to have any leaks. The transmission is great and shifts just like it should. The value of this vehicle is in the originality of the vehicle inside and out and the exceptionally rare Sport Line trim.

As mentioned above this vehicle is being sold in a NO RESERVE AUCTION. This means that the high bidder will be the new owner! Please be aware and bid accordingly and within your comfort level as you will be expected to consummate your purchase with full payment within 72 hours from auctions end. If you require any further information, please feel free to email, text or call anytime. 602-508-1800. I will be happy to assist you in anyway that I can. We are located in Phoenix near the Sky Harbor Airport and will gladly provide transportation from the airport should you decide to fly in and pick up your vehicle. In the alternative I have an excellent shipping contact and together we can provide a fantastic quote to get your new Mercedes to your doorstep safely. Feel free to text or call for a shipping quote during the auction so you can factor that into your purchase price, in some cases we can assist with shipping expense.

I don’t know what to make of this one. The selling deal is saying it is a one-owner car and I can buy that, but I’m curious as it what lays under those sheepskins and what is going on under the hood. The interior has had its fair share of the Arizona sun with a bunch of cracking wood, a really dried out steering wheel and if I had to guess, the seats aren’t in great shape. The fact that the sheepskin itself has a hole in is giving me no confidence that the seats are free from damage. Same goes for under the hood. Usually when you don’t show someone something, there is a reason why. The rest of the car looks well enough. I’m sure there are some spots here and there, but for the miles and probably the price, I can live with it.

As for the price, I don’t think we’ll be talking about a bunch of money for this one. The 300E market is super soft because Mercedes made a ton of these, a lot have survived and people aren’t exactly out there looking for these. The Sportline only appeals to the most hardcore Mercedes fans and those really seeking out a Sportline are probably looking for something a little cleaner. I’d be shocked to see this one top $5,000 and if you told me I had to guess, I’d probably pick around $3,000 or so. Anymore than that and I think the money could be spent better elsewhere.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 230CE Sportline

Yesterday I looked at 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E for the pure fact that is it the Sportline option that is pretty rare. Though Mercedes made about four billion W124 300Es, it feels like almost none of them are Sportline. Well, when it rains it pours, because I happen to come across the even rarer 1992 230CE Sportline. Before everyone rushes down to the comments and starts typing ”If only it had a manual transmission!”, hold your fingers, because it does.  We North Americans were not graced with this model and surely never in the 5-speed even if it had come, so this one is a rare bird to say the least. Somehow, this 230CE Sportline is up for bid outside of Chicago. I just wish it was a better example.

Though I’m excited by the proposition of this car existing here, this particular example isn’t giving me the best feelings. The photos are right of the edge of horrible and the description is light to say the least. The exterior looks okay with a seemingly straight body and it wears the lightweight wheels from the first-generation CLK, which isn’t the worst thing in the world when it comes to non-original wheels. Inside, I don’t have high hopes for this car as it looks like all the window switches are totally missing, all the wood is cracked and good luck on everything else because you can’t see anything. Under the hood, the M102 inline-4 is far from a powerful motor and is peppy at best when paired to the 5-speed. Worse, the photo showing the engine doesn’t give me great confidence in its condition as the air intake tube is held on with a bunch of black tape. Such is used car life.

I don’t know where this one is going to land. Obviously it is a rare car that people want, but you just can’t tell much by the photos or description. Ideally this is a car you go see in person if you were really serious about it or just bid blindly and probably know that when you pick it up it’s going to have some surprises for you. There is a ton of potential here if you can sort out all the little issues as it is a rust-free car from what I can see and parts shouldn’t be too difficult to find as a lot of stuff is shared with the W124 sedan. If this car is local to me I’d go take a look, but it just has too many questions, so I’m out on this one. For the risk takers out there, good luck.

Roll the dice: 1997 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG

The W202 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG has gone from being a neat little footnote in Mercedes-Benz and AMG history as being the first post-acquisition AMG car to a car that collectors are now seeking out to add them to their stable. They aren’t at the level of the 190E 2.3-16v, nor do I think they will ever be, but the demand has definitely picked up over the past year or two. Because of these cars being unloved and overlooked for as many years as they were, lots of them fell into the hands of people who used and abused them then moved on to the next cheap car. At the end of the day, this is still a W202, so its tenancy to rust is always a major issue as well as some other things that plague the chassis such as the tendency for head gasket in the M104 engine to leak oil from the back of the head. Sadly, this 1997 C36 up for sale in Canada, seems to suffer from both of these mentioned things. Although if you do the math on the purchase price plus potential repair costs, maybe you could come out ahead and have yourself a really cool car that the value is slowly rising on.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1997 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG on eBay

Year: 1997
Model: C36 AMG
Engine: 3.6 liter inline-6
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 267,894 km (166,461 mi)
Price: No Reserve Auction

In the early 90s Daimler and AMG signed an agreement that would allow Mercedes-Benz and AMG to develop vehicles together for the first time, and bring AMG products into Mercedes showrooms. The first product jointly developed from this relationship was the W202 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG, with a hand-built naturally aspirated 3.6L straight 6 motor cranking out 276HP @5750 RPM and 284lb-ft @4000 RPM launching it to 0-100k in 5.8 seconds.

1997 C36 AMG with 267894kms or 166461miles. beautiful in side out runs drives great. transmission shifts smooth.

Only Con is its going to need a head gasket job as its started to leak other than that car is clean new brakes and oil change was done recently.

This poor car needs some help. It isn’t at the parts car stage yet, but if it doesn’t get some attention soon, it will end up there. Cosmetically, it is showing some rust on the fenders as well as a spot on the bottom of the rear door. That is all the rust I can see but I’d be willing to be that is just the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the paint is faded pretty bad and the wheels need refinished too. Inside, it is tough to tell what is really going on because of the poor photos, but I assume the it is same kind of thing. Years of neglect leading to a point of do or die. Under the hood, the seller says mentions it does need a new head gasket. The good news with these M104s is that they leak oil externally from the rear of the head and not coolant into the cylinders or out of the head to where you could do serve damage because of overheating. Most people just regularly add oil until it gets to the point where it is so bad where you need to either fix it or scrap it, but thankfully this car is in a position now where someone will probably save it one way or another. Even if someone did buy this as a parts car, the engine can be swapped into other M104 cars fairly easily for some extra power with OEM looks and feel.

It’s tough to say where this auction might end. You can still grab a clean C36 with some miles on it for well under $10,000 so this car probably isn’t going to bring much. The starting bid is around $2,500 USD and I’d be shocked if it got near the $5,000 range. It might sell for a little bit of a premium because this is a Canadian car and there can’t be many for sale in up but you still have to look at the math on this one. You are looking at several thousands in cosmetic and mechanical work for a car that might be only worth $7,500. If you are handy and can do a lot of the labor yourself then this one might make sense to you, but to the majority of us, this car is just another sad case.

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

Around five years ago the values of the W113 Mercedes-Benz Padoga spiked pretty hard and kept climbing year after year. I totally get it because these roadsters are as classic as it gets and will never go out of style. The price for a really nice 280SL hovers around that $100,000 mark and can reach almost $260,000 for a perfect example while the lesser 230SL and 250SL can be had for a much more reasonable $50,000 if you so chose. This leads me to today’s car, a 1970 280SL up for sale in New Hampshire. This Pagoda is equipped not only with the rare factory air conditioning, but a 4-speed manual transmission. While all that is nice, why I really wanted to look at this 280SL is the price. No, it is not extremely high, but actually quite the opposite.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL on eBay

Year: 1971
Model: 280SL
Engine: 2.8 liter inline-6
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Mileage: 81,822 mi
Price: $37,000 Buy It Now

This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster shows 81,822 miles and is a US-spec 4-speed manual example with air conditioning. It is believed that slightly over 800 US-spec cars were built in 1971, of which approximately 10% had a manual transmission. Of those 10%, around 25% came with air conditioning from the factory, making this SL a rare specification. Other factory options include a rear window heater and Becker two-band radio. The car has been kept largely original with one repaint in the 1980s. The original engine and transmission remain in the car, and a recent service included brake work, a full tune up and new fluids.

Finished in red over black, the car retains its original ‘Pagoda’ hard top, which is in excellent condition. Hubcaps and tires are in good condition. The soft top is original and is in perfect condition and fully functional.

The car was repainted in the 1980s and was a good match to the original finish.

Exterior chrome and trim are excellent. Side trim, bumpers and headlight surrounds are excellent. The door handles and trunk handle remain original and in good shape.

The trunk is in very good condition, retaining the original spare, jack, and tools including the top wrench. The trunk floor is also in nice condition, as are the shock towers.

Carpeting is original and well-preserved. The original owners manual is included with the car.

The dashboard and instrumentation are both in fine working condition with functional gauges. The wood could use a resurfacing if desired by the new owner. All of the controls are functional, including the heater switches.

This SL is in good mechanical order, with the 2.8 liter inline six-cylinder engine recently registering around 160psi compression across all cylinders. Clutch engagement is solid and the transmission is in perfect working order.

Underneath, the vehicle is straight with no rust or damage repair apparent.

This is a nice example of a daily driver quality 280SL that is nice enough to spend money on, but not so nice that you feel bad putting miles on it or getting it wet. It is an older repaint, but doesn’t show a ton of flaws, and generally looks pretty presentable. The hard top looks nice, the soft top even nicer, and while it could probably use a new set of tires, it’s not the end of the world. Inside is much of the same story. Nice, but not perfect, and it wouldn’t be out of line if something like a small ice cream cone was enjoyed inside it. The undercarriage shot shows what you’d typically expect for a car like this with some replacement exhaust pieces but no rot or major issues. All in all, a tidy example. Not perfect, but surely isn’t offensive or anything that needs immediate attention.

Now for the best part: the price. This seller wants only $37,000 for this car. If you would have told me this was a 230SL, I would have said that was fair. A 280SL? This is a deal right now. I’ve seen rolling wrecks selling for $25,000 and normally a car like this sells for $60,000 and above. I assume the owner probably bought this car a long time ago or when they weren’t quite so expensive and wants to move it along, hence this aggressive price. The market on Pagodas has cooled down quite a bit in the past nine months or so, but this one is still a really great deal in terms of 280SLs. If you are looking for a Pagoda, I think this is a super safe bet to enjoy for either a short-term or long-term ownership experience. I’m just glad there are still deals out there to be had like this one. I know there is only a small percentage of people out there who can afford to blow $37,000 on a weekend car, but if you are one of those people, this one might be it.

1995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG

Last week I checked out an interesting Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG that needed some help up for sale in Canada. It seems like no one wanted to give a helping hand for this car as it ended with no bids even at it’s reasonable $2,500 US starting price. Today, I ran across another C36 AMG up for sale in Canada although this one has a much different story. This 1995 is actually a Japanese-spec car that has a few little touches that set it apart from the North American-spec cars. Unlike last week’s example, this one isn’t a basket case that needs thousands of dollars to make it presentable again. In fact, it is actually pretty clean.  The price? Not all that bad in my eyes.

This is a typical JDM Mercedes that crams as much as wood as possible in as many places as possible. The steering wheel and shift knob have been swapped out for the generous wood versions but I am really interested in what is going on the back seats. This car has option 243, sport seats front and rear, which turns the rear seats into individual seats with fat bolsters on them. I don’t believe this was ever a North American option and it is even pretty rare in European-spec cars. This is the same kind of seating setup that was in the rear of the 16v W201 cars and it was a cool idea to carry it over to the W202 AMG cars. On the outside, it looks like this car is lowered a little, but other than that, I’m not seeing anything out-of-place.

The asking price of CAN $11,500 (USD $8,714) isn’t too far off seeing as where prices for these are at right. The miles are a little higher than I would have guessed, but it isn’t the end of the world. Ideally, you’d want to check to see if the head gasket on the back of this M104 is seeping any oil because it probably will in the future if it hasn’t been addressed yet. I would say that $7,500 would be a good price if you really wanted to get serious about taking this one home, but right now, it’s still not a bad option at all at its current ask.

Rust in pieces: 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500

Few things in this world are undefeated. The internet is one of them, taxes, death and then the ultimate final boss, mother nature. You can hide or try to fight it all you want, but the world very rarely has mercy on vehicles. Today’s vehicle, a 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500, was spared no mercy. Granted, this G-Wagen lives in the harsh climate of Quebec, Canada, but what this poor W463 turned into will make anyone scratch their head as to what happened. This brick on wheels has an extreme amount of rust to the point where there are holes the size of your fist in the body panels. These Gs have somewhere of a propensity to rust in some common areas, but I don’t understand how this G500 got this bad. As what it did for the value? I suppose not much.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500 on eBay

Year: 2002
Model: G500

Transmission: 5-speed automatic

Price: Buy It Now $22,522 CND ($17,079 USD)

For sale 2002 G500 with low millage and rusted body. This is Canadian vehicle, was sitting outside for a couple years. Canadian winters is the reason of body damage, mechanically is in good condition, frame has surface rust, ESP module was changed as well as rear SAM (both needs to be assigned with the vehicle) also rear window regulators where changed… Truck runs and drives. The truck has Ontario registration (clean title) can be seen in Montreal. Buyer will be responsible for transportation. Fill free to ask. Thanks for viewing.

Sad to say, this W463 is probably at the point of no return. It looks like this thing was pelted with salt the last 16 years, which probably wasn’t out of the question seeing the kind of winters Quebec gets. Hardly any body edge was spared and even random places like the bottom of the mirror mounts are bubbling pretty hard with rust. What is really interesting is that it looks like the owner was hiding all the rust with some kind of tape (probably to pass inspection) and when the tape was pulled off, it ripped a lot of paint off in the process. This of course is only going to speed up the rusting process, which might have something to do with why it is for sale.

The seller has an asking price of $22,500 Canadian, which works out to about $17,000 US. If this 2002 didn’t have the rust issues, it would be probably sell for around $25,000, if not more. So basically an $8,000 discount to take this thing, which I don’t think would be worth it. Even for a person like myself who wants an SUV with cosmetic issues to drive in the winter, the holes are too much. The rust is too far widespread to even think about cutting the metal out and replacing it and some spots like the window channels would take a very skilled body worker to fix. Problem is, that kind of skilled work doesn’t come cheap. I think right now, this one will be a hard sell to anyone that isn’t immediately going turn it into a dedicated offroader or lives in a place that doesn’t have inspections. Best of luck to the seller on this one, they are going to need it.

Fall is officially here, so that means in roughly 11 days, we’ll be looking at about four feet of snow. (Florida and California residents excluded.) While there are still some sunny days left, why not enjoy them in none other than a V12 convertible from Mercedes-Benz. Truth be told, if you forced me to go buy a V12 Mercedes-Benz convertible, it wouldn’t take me any time at all the settle on the R129 with the M120 because that is the V12 that wouldn’t have me sleeping inside it because of how unreliable and costly it is. Granted, the M120 still isn’t an inexpensive engine to live with in the grand scheme of things, but compared to the M275 or god-forsaken M137, it is a far easier pill to swallow. Today, I wanted to check out a really tidy 1993 600SL up for sale in New York that has all the little goodies that makes it stand out from what you usually see from these early R129s.

This gorgeous Mercedes Benz had an original MSRP of over $150k in 1993! It’s a timeless piece of Mercedes Benz history that is sure to increase in value! The V12 engine that was used in this car is the same as what’s found in the exotic Pagani Zonda supercar. It is equipped with the very rare 3-Piece AMG OZ Wheels and a Renntech Exhaust System. The car runs and drives flawlessly, and with only 73k on the clock it’s sure to bring many more years of enjoyment for it’s next owner. Please feel free to e-mail or call for further information. 607-260-0010 or 607-260-0010

These pre-facelift R129 looked pretty dated when compared to what they look like towards the end of their production run in early 2000s, but the owner of this car made a few changes to not really modernize the car, but rather give it a different kind of look. The biggest thing you will notice are the staggered, 3-piece AMG wheels that look right at home on the car compared to the normal factory 8-hole wheels from the era. Next, all the badges were either removed or painted black to blend right in with the black paint. On the rear of the car, taillights from the facelifted cars were added to as well as a RENNtech exhaust to liven up the sweet harmony of all those cylinders. Inside, the only things that were changed was the factory shift knob was swapped out with a matching wood piece to match the rest of the burl wood and a head unit that probably can be trashed seeing how it looks like it’s old enough to buy cigarettes. Overall, these changes took the look of the car in an entirely different direction from what is usually a very conservative look.

This car is listed for a hair under $14,000 which I think is pretty fair. Those wheels alone are worth thousands and usually around $10,000 is the floor for a nice V12 R129, so the math makes sense here. I’d strongly recommend doing your due diligence on any M120-powered car because these have their common issues with throttle bodies that need rebuilt, breather hoses under the intake manifold that always seem to break and a bunch of other little things that can ruin your rainy day fun really fast. I’d also check all the valves in the top mechanism because once one starts leaking, the others aren’t usually far behind. If all these things check out, then enjoy your buttery smooth V12 for the price of a pre-owned Honda Civic — just make sure to keep up on the maintenance.

The W123 Mercedes-Benz 240D is a car that does everything for me. I rotate my 1983 4-speed manual car as one of my daily drivers and despite its many flaws, I appreciate how satisfying it is. When I am driving home from work at night alone on the highway, it is true bliss. Everything is in the right spot, nothing is rattling or shaking, everything fits perfectly, it returns just over 30 mpg and all of that makes you realize why it is considered one of the best cars ever produced. It isn’t all gravy though, because on days when I’m heading to work in traffic and it’s 86 degrees outside, I’m driving it like a maniac just to not get ran over by a tractor tailor because I don’t have enough power to merge on the highway. Then when I do arrive at work, all my coworkers ask me why I look like a just wrestled a bear. Nope, just driving my 240D. I suppose it is not the cars fault because you do need to be a certain kind of crazy to still be daily driving one of these. The newest 240D is now 35 years-old and is well into classic territory and should be treated as such. But no, not me, I’ll suffer for the sake of good ergonomics and forgoing something called a ”car payment.”

This of course leads me to today’s car, a 1982 240D up for bid in Annapolis, Maryland. This car is painted in the rare Mango Green and checks with a just under 62,000 miles which is pretty unheard of when it comes to 240Ds. As you might have guessed, it is extremely clean and shows very little wear at all. What kind of price might it bring? I’m curious to find out.

This is pretty much what I expected for a 62,000 mile 240D. It is just shy of being perfect as it has a few little marks, but make no mistake about it, this is for sure a rare bird that isn’t seen often. The paint looks great and the interior is much of the same. The dash has survived without a crack and even the elastic on the setback nets is as tight as can be. Under the hood is presentable and the big thing, the air conditioning, is said to function well. The only thing that is catching my eye about this car is the front left wheel. I would bet a lot of money that is the original spare tire that was put on because it matches the tread of the original tires that these cars came with and all the other tires on this car look to be in not so great shape. If that is the case, I wouldn’t feel great about driving on it because not matter how good the tread is on the tires, they break down with age. Especially older tires that were produced some 30 years ago. Other than that, this one looks like a gem.

Where will this auction end? I can’t wait to find out. There are still plenty of people out there with love for the 240D, despite its lack of power, and this car is probably going to catch their eye. The rare color is a great selling point and the low miles just top it off. I don’t think it’ll have any trouble at fetching a premium price but this is a reserve auction, so who knows what kind of price the seller has in mind. If someone threw out a number of $10,000, I wouldn’t say they were crazy at all because of what kind of prices that clean, rare color W123s bring. I don’t think this one will be any different, but it all depends on who throws their hat in the ring.
