2004 Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG

I have a kind of love-hate with the Mercedes-Benz W220. The design of the S-Class from the W140 to the W220 was like high school senior who is just starting out in life to now a post-grad with an office job who realizes that this will be his life for the next 40 years. Everything is a little bigger, a little softer, not quite as handsome, but now you have some kind of money to spend on things like screens that will be obsolete in three years. Nothing wrong with that and totally acceptable, but the S-Class was now firmly blended in with the BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and Lexus LS. There was some hope for W220 if you really wanted a full-size sedan to separate yourself from the rest and that of course came in the facelifted S55 AMG. The styling was much more aggressive thanks to some different bumpers and a quad exhaust setup, but the real gem was under the hood with the M113K. This engine was a gem the day it debuted in the E55 and SL55 in 2003 and to this day is a favorite by many for its relative reliability and ability to make huge power numbers. Now that we are well over a decade into the M113K existence and the regular W220 can be had for the same price as a gourmet pizza, finding an S55 AMG for not much money at all isn’t a problem. Although that doesn’t mean that all problems are solved, especially when it comes to maintaining these monsters. This 2004 up for sale outside of Chicago is no different.

Well maintained, smoke free, super clean Mercedes Benz S55 AMG with extensive records and a recent major service and inspection report showing no current of pending faults. Awesome power and luxury as this S55 is fully loaded with every option and then some.

Recent service was over $8,000 (see photos) and performed by independent Mercedes Benz specialists that have maintained the car for years. Records show service history back to warranty. The last service included OEM brakes, suspension hydraulic pump, tires, wheel refinishing and more! Fluids have been changed with regularity and always with approved types and OEM parts and it will be one year or 10,000 miles until another maintenance service is required!

Every system works as it should and they include… radar cruise, power, heated, cooled and dynamic front and rear seats, navigation with updated discs, front and rear climate control, keyless start, blue tooth and the list goes on. The previous second owner added rear entertainment and blue tooth to the list.

Please note the only known issues with this vehicle is a front cup holder door lid that jams. The paint is in excellent condition despite some chips to the aluminum hood from the majority of highway driving. No major dents, scratches, visible rust or accident damage.

Vehicle is listed at fair market value even though quality rust free examples like this one are harder and harder to find. We are also accepting reasonable offers. Clean title and Carfax in hand as well as manuals, car cover, key sets, remote controls, navigation discs and service records with recent inspection form.

This 2004 comes with just under just 150,000 miles and by the looks of it, is pretty nice given it’s age. The biggest thing with this car is the recent service bill for $6,200 that replaced the ABC pump for $2,100 and a slew of other things like rear pads and rotors, some tires and some switches. Granted, a lot of that stuff could be done cheaper, but I guess if you don’t want to deal with it, this is what you’ll pay. In addition to that stuff, you’ll need to worry about the common W220 stuff like the shifter breaking and getting stuck in park and the EIS failing without warning. The M113K is perfectly stout if you stay up on the maintenance like keeping an eye the supercharger pulley bearing as well as all the other pullies as well. A lot of the problems people run into with these engines is usually self-inflicted because they want to make 750 horsepower for $800. This car looks to be totally stock outside of some dated screens in the headrests, so I wouldn’t feel uneasy about it. It does have the nice Distronic option that is super useful if you travel on the highway frequently.

This car is priced at $10,900 and I think that is totally fair. Prices are all over the board for these cars with the super clean examples still asking big money which I think is a tad silly. Personally, I wouldn’t mind owning this car at all at this good price knowing I got a good deal and have room to keep this car going. It is totally tame enough to use as a daily driver even with its nearly 500 horsepower and 515 ft-lbs of torque as long as you don’t drive like a crazy person. As long as you know what you are getting into with these cars, I see no reason why not to gamble on one.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL

Last week I looked at a really cool 1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SL that took the early R129 styling cues and freshened them up a little bit thanks to some different wheels, tail lights and a little bit of paint. The price was more than reasonable for all you were getting and I think that you would probably do just fine when it came to keeping the value on that car.  Today, I wanted to look at another early R129 that is nearly stock just to compare it when it comes to styling. This 1992 500SL up for sale in Alabama is painted in the classic Pearl Gray with dark gray lower cladding that is just a wonderful example of what these early R129s are. Nothing is aggressive or flashy, just a perfectly crafted Mercedes roadster that is built to pass the test of time. The best part about it? You can grab this one for under $10,000.

**1-Owner, Clean Carfax!** Local new car trade-in. Routine documented services since day one! Recent convertible top replacment. Truth be told, if you gave me $10,000 and told me to go buy a R129, I’m finding a 2000-2002 SL500 with the SL1 and SL2 packages that probably looks a lot like this. Yes, it would have a few miles on it, but miles have never scared me away from any car and the nearly bulletproof M113 won’t change that. However, if you told me to get a pre-1995 R129, this one would be near the top of the list. I think these early cars look much better in softer colors because colors like red can be quite jarring on this body. Inside, the different colors of gray blend nicely and the burl wood still has that deep, rich look to it. Everything else seems to be nice although I would throw that aftermarket headunit out the window on the drive home and try to find a stock radio to replace it. One other little thing is that the driver’s side bolster has a wear spot on it that you can barely see in some of the photos. Under the wood, well, I don’t know because there are no photos of that, but the M119 shouldn’t be too much of a handful if you know your way around it.

I think the hair under $10,000 for this car is a decent price given it’s condition and just 88,000 miles. It isn’t the best deal in the world, but you probably won’t lose much on this car if you buy it to be a weekend driver with some days to commute with it on the really nice days. The values on R129s have been pretty stable and haven’t been going either direction outside of the really special cars, so if you prefer the looks of these great roadsters, I have no qualms at all with this one or any other. As always, keep them maintained and it’ll be a good ownership experience.

1956 Mercedes-Benz L319 Truck

Here is something I don’t normally see. This is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz L319 Truck up for bid in California of all places. As you can see, it is very old and very rusty. More on that later. The story with the L319 trucks and vans are they were a light commercial vehicle that were larger than a standard delivery van, but smaller than a conventional light truck of the time. The L319 is essentially the grandfather of the now very common Mercedes-Benz Sprinter that is still the go-to van for a number of industries. This 1956 in Chico, California has pretty much reached the end of its life span, but don’t put it past some trendy business to buy it and put flowers in the bed to take cutesy Instagram photos with.

Year: 1956
Model: L319 Truck
Engine: 1.8 liter diesel inline-4
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Mileage: 76,045 mi
Price: No Reserve Auction

NO RESERVE! Supposedly ran when it was parked. Engine is complete and turns. Pictures speak for themselves. Tires hold air and was pretty easy to get on the trailer. Has all glass except for front window.

Looking at the condition of this truck, I think it’s days are numbered as a running and driving vehicle. There looks to be some pretty serious structural issues around the entire truck and even the cab looks to be separating from the frame. Even though the seller says the engine turns free, I can’t imagine it firing without opening the valve cover and seeing if the oil turned into tar. It is crazy to think that this truck is 62 years-old, so anything related to any kind of fluid is probably long gone by now if it has been sitting in a field for years. Cosmetically, I have no idea where you would find a windshield for one of these things and probably even a custom glass maker would have a hell of a time matching the curves and contours this truck has. Like I mentioned before, I’m willing to bet that this is done being a driving vehicle and is now solely an art piece.

The starting bid of $1,500 seems kind of high to me but it does have some bids already. Even if you want this thing for parts, there isn’t all that much that is salvageable outside of a few tiny things. Just moving this thing around is not a cake walk and the big thing is stopping it if it gets rolling. Everyone loves to say that a project car rolls easy, but if you can’t get the car into any gear then stopping and securing it to the ground is a whole other problem. I genuinely do think that some antique shop would love to paint their logo on the side of the doors as a big advertisement piece, so I would put my money there when it comes to a possible buyer. Either way, a cool piece of Mercedes history that is still kicking around out there.

The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16V Evolution II is one of those cars that you know exists, but thanks to its rarity of just 502 examples made, don’t pop up all that often in any kind of setting. The majority of these cars are now securely tucked away in private collections thanks to their crazy price tags (more on that later) and very rarely come up for public sale. Today, car number 208 painted in Blauschwarz, is up for sale for anyone who has enough money to sink into a car that you probably can’t justify it costs as much as it does. The best part about this car? It’s for sale in sunny San Diego, California.

Background: In 1990, Mercedes with the direct assistance of Cosworth and AMG debuted the highly revised 190E 2.6-16 Evo II. In order to meet DTM homologation requirements 500 units were built, all of which were immediately spoken for and sold before the first examples had even been completed. The Evo II had a numerous cosmetic and mechanical updates and changes including a radical and fully functional aerodynamics package, an in-car adjustable suspension, improved brakes, bigger 17-inch wheels, and a reworked Cosworth/AMG 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produced an incredible 235 horsepower! VIN: WDB2010361F736550 This particular COSWORTH 2.6-16 EVO II was the 208th of 500 examples built. It was ordered under “Kommission No.”0 0 226 03170” for assembly at the Mercedes Benz Bremen, Germany production facility where all EVO II models were completed. The order was initiated in early April of 1990 by the Mercedes Benz official agent in Munich, Germany. The order was very specific and included a total of 23 separate option packages furthering the known fact that no two of these rare MBs were alike. Completion of all work was recorded as May 25th, 1990 with shipping a few days later on May 31st by overland transport. Initial ownership and registration was via a private collector in Munich, Germany. The vehicle remained there until May of 1994 when it was purchased by a Japanese Dealer and formally exported and imported into Japan. It was then road registered there for the first time on June 6th, 1994 using plate number “33 5978.”. One year later on September 13th, this EVO II was sold to a another dealer and the registration plate was changed to “33 2216.” Three years later this vehicle was purchased by a private museum collection on March 27th, 1998. New registration and plates “35 5059” were then issued and assigned to the vehicle. For the next twenty years, this EVO II remained in a preserved and largely un-driven state until March of 2018 when it was purchased by a Japanese dealer and given extensive services and safety checks. In July of 2018, it was offered for sale and purchased for export by our company. VIN: WDB2010361F736550 Today: This is a fully documented, rust and accident free, all matching number example. It is sold with all services and safety checks complete in a total “turn-key” state. Full history, internal Factory assembly records from new, tools, books and manuals remain with the vehicle and will accompany it when sold to her next fortunate owner. It is highly unlikely you will ever encounter a finer, more correct, authentic or lower mileage example anywhere at any price!

The dealer does a great job of explaining the history of this car so I don’t need to repeat everything, but the short of it is that is a German-spec car that was exported to Japan where it remained for the last 24 years until it was imported into the United States to be put up for sale. I am really surprised to see this car painted in Blauschwarz, which is a really deep, dark navy blue color, because the vast majority of these cars were painted black with the Blauschwarz color being by special request only. I am pretty confident that these were the only two factory colors for this car as I’ve yet to see one of these painted in something else. The interior is a full leather setup as opposed to the tartan cloth and the data card even says it was optioned with the Nokia Intergral Telephone System which must have been removed at one point. As special and as nice as this car looks, it has two little flaws I can see that probably should be fixed given its enormous price tag. The first being the digital clock that floods all its pixels that is common across all the 16V models and the second being the gauge cluster surround. All the cars from this era are prone this odd discoloring on the plastic inside the gauge cluster that I think is caused by high heat and humidity. The easy fix to this is to pull the gauge cluster and swap the piece out with a clean example from any other W201 as they are interchangeable for honestly not that much money at all. I know these are super minor things, but if I am spending this much money on this car, I would like it to be as near as perfect as possible.

The price tag of $205,000 surprises me in general, but this is simply what they sell for. Do I think you get $200,000 worth of enjoyment from this car? Of course not. This is just one of those cars that the rarity and demand determine the market and for whatever reason, around $200,000 seems to be the sweet spot. Personally, I’d save a few bucks and pick up the much more conservative Evolution I, but the Evolution II is the best and final 190E, so the bigger price tag only makes sense. I’m really curious to see what happens with the values of these cars in 5-10 years time as the lure of these probably is only going to grow stronger, but who really knows when it comes to something as niche as this car. I just hope we actually see this thing run around on the streets and not locked away.

1999 Mercedes-Benz S500 Grand Edition

The W140 Mercedes-Benz S500 Grand Edition is a one of those cars that you probably forgot about if you knew they existed in the first place. I looked at a really nice one about a year ago and they don’t pop up for sale all that often. I’m sure that has a lot to do with just 600 of these cars ever made, but a lot of times when I do see them for sale they are in a pretty sad state. Chalk that up to the W140 not really being a collectible yet and the market still really soft on them, but I think this car has some serious potential to be a in demand model when it comes to Mercedes enthusiasts. If you want the best of what the W140 has to offer and don’t want to fully dive in with a S600, then the S500 Grand Edition is probably going to be your answer. This example up for sale in California is probably the nicest one I’ve seen come up for sale in a long time and I’m even more surprised at it’s condition given its four owners and over 100,000 miles. The question is, are you willing to pony up a heavy premium for such a nice example?

This 1999 Mercedes W140 S500 Grand Edition was originally sold at Walnut Creek Mercedes and has been in California since new. Only 600 of the Grand Editions were made worldwide and were hand built. Mercedes enthusiast all agree that this was the last of the over built Mercedes. The Grand Editions were exclusively finished in Obsidian Black with Parchment Nappa Leather with real Burl Walnut combination. Grand Editions had exclusive options such as illuminated door sills, floor mats and 18″ AMG Aero Monoblock sport wheels.

This car is a very high quality car which has placed 1st place in several local Mercedes Club Concours. The engine and chassis have undergone extensive detailing performed by Good Speed Motoring in Modesto, Ca and looks like it did when it left the factory. All the paint is original (Paint Depth Meter Verified) and is in excellent condition with no cracking or fading. The interior is in excellent condition and includes a brand new set of factory Grand Edition floor mats (no longer available). The burl walnut is in excellent condition with no cracks. From Mercedes Benz Club of America:

Well-built and durable bodies and mechanical components have fared well

Corrosion resistance continually improved (although road salt in some parts of the country may have allowed the tin worm to do its damage)

Low wind resistance helps maintain a quiet cabin and, given the big engine, improves fuel economy

Comfort for driver and passengers is way above average for cars from this time frame and allows for all-day driving without back aches

These cars make a statement by their very size and presence

Power and smoothness in the W140 are more than adequate, making these supreme touring cars; cross-country trips are very feasible

Safety features – some electronically controlled – were state-of-the-art for the 1990s

If you can find a W140 in good condition, you will discover that it is a magnificent vehicle to own. Because of its size, it definitely makes a statement, but it will also provide a superior touring experience – allowing day-long drives in quiet comfort. Because of their styling, the coupes are, as usual, the more desirable cars for enthusiasts, but the four-door sedans offer ease of entry and are roomy, comfortable, and elegant. One good friend is a realtor and uses his S500 to take his valued clients to desirable properties. It may not be totally because of his W140, but he is very successful.

-Richard Simonds

I have to admit, I am really impressed with this car both cosmetically and mechanically and from reading the owner’s description of this car, I understand why. This one looks like it was a no expense spared vehicle to the point where the owner was entering it into Mercedes shows and actually winning — an admittedly tough task for any W140. Everything looks nearly showroom fresh and that beautiful Burl Walnut wood looks outstanding. The seats look great and even the Grand Edition floor mats have very little, if any, flaws in them. This is an example of how great a new W140 was when it rolled off the lot and explains why people plunked down nearly $90,000 in 1999 to buy one. I do think that if you could still use this car regularly and keep it in this condition as long as you are diligent about maintenance and cosmetic upkeep.

The starting price for the auction is a hair under $16,000 and while that number looks high for a non-S600 W140, I have a tough time arguing against it. Yes, you can get a comparable condition W140 with half the miles for a few thousand less, but I do think the Grand Edition upgrades carry some weight here that are reflected in the ultimate selling price. Is it worth it? If you plan on keeping this car for the long haul, I’d say so. I doubt these will be any cheaper seeing as the W220 doesn’t have any models that will leave anyone clamoring for and the W221/W222 are in a different dimension when it comes to trying to maintain when the car reaches out of warranty. So if you really love the W140 and have been waiting for just the right one, I have no doubt that this one can satisfy you.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe

One of the things I love about the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is that it came in every shape and size. What I mean by that is that you could buy a sedan, estate, coupe and cabriolet. This is unique because it is the only generation that can boast such a fact. The prior W123 lacked a cabriolet and every generation after lacked the coupe and cabriolet. You might be saying that the CLK-Class is basically the E-Class coupe, but I don’t see it that way because the CLK was a mash-up of a parts both mechanically and cosmetically from the C-Class made to look like an E-Class, not a true E-Class coupe. Even when they literally changed the named to E-Class Coupe in the recent generations, it is still riding on a C-Class chassis. That leads me right into today’s car, a 1994 E320 Coupe up for sale in Connecticut, that has that classic facelift W124 look and checks all the right boxes if you are looking for a sleek and livable daily driver. The best part about it? It looks to be fully sorted and won’t take much to drive home with.

1994 E320 Coupe

The 1994 and 1995 Coupe models were some of the rarest W124 models brought to America

This Tourmaline green is color code 269, its a fabulous dark blue green

189,000 miles

This car is fully equipped with ASR traction control, headlight wash wipe and heated seats.

Car has fresh paint that is nearly flawless, has a couple of small marks on the front and rear bumpers.

Everything works, heat, a/c, sunroof, seats, seat belt presenters etc

Transmission shifts perfectly

Armrest is very nice

Roll top console is very nice

No broken trim, no missing pieces

The stock wheels are very nice with matching continental tires.

Fully serviced I have done a lot of work on this car

Drivers seat module
Drivers seat belt presenter
Engine oil & filter
Transmission fluid & filter
Steering fluid & filter
Fuel filter
Blower motor lubed
New cabin filters
Engine mounts
Diff oil
Replaced radiator and hoses
Plugs, wires, coil packs
Bilstein Shock absorbers

Plus a bunch of other smaller items.

I was going to keep this car, but I have too many cars (including another 5 W124 coupe models), she has to go.

There is some dry cracking of the leather on the drivers seat. I have an excellent replacement seat skin but it doesn’t have the heat option. I will include it and or install the replacement.

The console wood is very nice, some very minor cracks around the shifter.

Has Mercedes black floor mats.

Needs nothing

Comes with a large collection of replacement parts, including a full exhaust system, alternator, starter, steering pump, relays, fuses

As great as this coupe is, its a used car and its for sale, where it is, as it is.

I’m really high on this car based on the condition that is it is in and the price the seller is asking. This isn’t a perfect C124 and doesn’t claim to be and I think that is the beauty of this one. It has some bumps and bruises, the seat has some wear and the miles are a tad bit high at 185,000, but all the maintenance and repairs make up for all that. It is pretty clear the seller knows his way around these cars judging by him owning a litter of them, so I feel pretty good about buying this one versus one with no history. I love the Tourmaline Green paint on the W124 and the 8-hole wheels look very clean as well. This one has ”perfect daily driver” written all over because of its capability and even more so because of the price.

I think the asking price of $5,750 for this car is more than fair. The prices of C124 cars have been heating up of late with really clean examples topping the five-figure mark and it doesn’t surprise me at all. The C124, especially the 1994 and 1995 cars, is just the right size if you want a more modern coupe but don’t love the C140 and all the potential issues that can arise from it. I have no doubt that this car has another 185,000 miles left it in and probably more as long as you stay diligent with the maintenance. 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550

You are probably wondering why I am featuring a relatively new Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is quite common and outside of being really packed with tech, isn’t all that interesting once you’ve been around it for some time. Well, this 2015 S550 4Matic up for sale in New Jersey combines my two favorite things when it comes to German cars: massive depreciation and high miles. Granted, this car doesn’t have particularly high miles at 111,739, but you do the math at the car being roughly three years-old, you can see that thing car has been on the road a lot. When it comes to the depreciation on this car, the numbers get even better.

The W222 is a very fine car and I’d even go as far as saying it is amazing. The technology is top-notch and the self-driving capabilities are just short of fully autonomous. It is comfortable, easy to drive, has plenty of power and in 4Matic guise, can handle any weather situation. Of course, all of this came at a gigantic price tag. You would be hard pressed to purchase a new W222 under $100,000 when it was all said and done and most cars topped that $100,000 milestone because that is just what a new S-Class costs these days. I’d argue that they are worth every penny and then some, but then again I’m not writing the check for one either. So you can make the call on that one.

This car is an interesting example of what happens when you rack up a ton of miles on a car that already has a very rapid depreciation curve. Right now, if you wanted to grab a 2005 S550 4Matic with average miles, which is around 40,000 or so, you can expect to pay somewhere around $55,000. That means the car lost around 45% of its value in the three years since new. Not unheard of, but when you put this into a dollar amount, it becomes a little bit more alarming. This car, with a little under 112,000 miles, is offered up for just $33,000 which the possibility of being even cheaper if you meet the reserve on the auction. That means that this car has the possibility of losing 70% of its value which equals roughly $70,000 of depreciation — in just three years. To put it into more crazy context, that’s the equivalent of buying a brand new BMW M3 and throwing it away after 36 months. You now understand why people lease these cars to try to avoid eating that massive amount and take advantage of the tax implications.

So what about this car then? Well, if you really wanted a W222 and didn’t care about the miles, then this is your car. It isn’t perfect judging by the seller says the bumper needs some help and you have to wonder about the reliability of the twin-turbo M278 in the long-term. The good news is that the seller also says it has the extended warranty under 140,000 miles or 2022. That means you probably have enough three years left of worry free driving if you drive like a normal person and not 40,000 miles a year. What will it be worth at the end of those three years? Hard to say. I think we are entering an era where really expensive cars aren’t going to drop to $7,000 like we’ve seen before simply because of what amazing they are. Then again, I could be wrong.

1974 Mercedes-Benz 240D

A few weeks ago I looked at a nice 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D that sold for a really fair $7,500. I confessed my admiration for the W123 and all that it can do, as well as what it can’t. Today, I came across a very interesting W115 240D up for bid in Portland, Oregon that deserved a closer look. I think the W115 in general gets overlooked at times because it isn’t the W123 but that doesn’t it isn’t a great car on its own. At first glance on this 1974, everything looked great with major recondition on both the exterior and interior. It wasn’t until I saw the photos under the hood and read the description of this car to see that this really wasn’t a 240D. At least not anymore. Let me explain.

Model: 240D

Price: Reserve Auction

1974 240D Mercedes-Benz (Like new – no expense spared restoration)

Vin: 11511710044267

Miles: 102566

History: The car was purchased new and has been driven by the family patriarch most of its life. The kids loved it so much it was the recipient of a total no expense spared restoration in 2014.This is not the kind of car that gets restored but being in well off family it had sentimental value so it got everything. All documents are present and it has the data card and plate issued to the owner with it. It’s been maintained to high standard all its life and received over $25,000.00 in 2014 to take it to almost new status.

Engine & Transmission: The manual transmission shifts smoothly and runs strong. The 3.0 L OM617 I5 straight 5 diesel engine was put in (factory crate) engine and the transmission as well. All the suspension was redone, gas tank, radiator and breaks are new.

Body: The paint on the car is very nice. I would grade the paint an 8 on a scale from 1-10. It has some small rock chips on the front by the headlamps (see photos). The rubber and chrome are good and there are no dents or waviness when you look down the car. The car is free of rust and corrosion except for the bottom of the rear quarter panels. The tires are in great shape and have 80% tread left, the chrome rims are in excellent condition.

Interior: The leather interior was ordered from the factory and has been restored, it has new matts and the hard to get to blower was rebuilt. The A/C blows cold. The dash is free of cracks. An aftermarket radio is in dash and four modern speakers put in. The carpet is original and worn in places. The steering wheel is very nice and glovebox is very clean. The door panels look new.

Summary: This is a wonderful original example as you don’t see these cars in as new condition very often. Some people restore cars for money this car was restored out of family passion. Now it is time for the next owner to enjoy the car.

Feel free to contact me for additional information.

I take great pride in my eBay rating and accurate description of this car. I reserve the right to end the auction early. I invite all inspections prior to bidding.

I will contact the winning bidder via email after the auction ends. Car is sold as-is with no warranties express or implied.

I require a $1,500 deposit (paypal or bank wire transfer) within 2 days. Balance is due (bank check or bank wire transfer only) within 7 days of auction end. Delivery upon funds clearing the bank.

The transport cost is the responsibility of the winning bidder, I will help with logistics.

Thank you for viewing my auction listing.

I don’t see a lot of these W115s restored or at least rejuvenated for whatever reason so this car is a little bit of a surprise. The interior is the real gem of the car with recovered seats and a very rare crack-free dash. The outside of the car looks wheel enough with great looking paint but the real gem is what is under the hood. The 4-cylinder OM616 was swapped out for a naturally aspirated 5-cylinder OM617. You might be saying ”Well, Mercedes made a W115 300D. So what is the big deal?” The difference here is that this car kept the 4-speed manual transmission which wasn’t available with the 300D. That combination means that this car should have just enough pep to keep up with traffic and be very enjoyable to drive on a daily basis if you wanted to do that. Is this a perfect car? No, it has a few small imperfections, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the better W115s I’ve seen in a long time.

As far as pricing goes, I’m betting this one will bring a pretty penny. Portland is such a hot spot for a car like this so I expect the local bidders to be all over this car as well as anyone on the west coast. If you told me to take a guess, I’d say it will probably bring $7,500 and might even hit that $10,000 if it has the right bidders. Cars like this one don’t come around often with the OEM plus style engine swap as well as the redone interior. I can’t wait to see how much it goes for.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC with 10,369 miles

I’ve lost track at how many Mercedes-Benz W126 Coupes I’ve looked at because frankly, there are a lot of really nice ones out still there. I think maybe that has to do with it somewhat being see as the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz large coupes as it didn’t get much better when you factor everything in. A lot of people don’t really like the next generation W140 Coupe and the prior generation, the R107 SLC, isn’t the prettiest car ever made. If you go even further back with the W111, you start talking about them becoming pretty pricey and they aren’t exactly setup to use on a regular basis because of how old they are. Today’s car, a 1986 560SEC, is probably the nicest W126 Coupe I’ve run across. In case you haven’t noticed, it has just a little over 10,000 miles on it and looks every bit the part. As for the price? Well, what are you expecting for a 560SEC with these circumstances?

1986 560SEC – ID#WDBCA45D5GA229368 – Champagne/Palomino – 10,300 original miles.

MFG date: 2/86 – Single owner through 8/18 – Full documentation from original sales invoice forward.

Full flawless handbooks – Original unused spare wheel/tire with the placard – Original tool roll in unopened plastic bag.

Original windshield – Original safety kit – Unused cigarette lighter – Clean Carfax.

Miscellaneous service repair orders – Full original set of keys – Original sales invoice – Copies of final payment checks.

This first year of production 560SEC was special ordered on 12-3-85 from Toyota East Mercedes-Benz in Greenville, NC.

The buyer was allowed $50,240 for his 7,200 mile 1985 500SEC as a trade-in against the new 560SEC.

After a three month wait the buyer received his Champagne 560SEC on March 17, 1986.

It joined a 1977 450SEL with less than 10k miles in the garage and became the family’s pride and joy.

Only used for special occasions and the occasional 5 minute drive to the owner’s dental practice.

The car has accumulated just over 10k miles.

It remains an exceptionally well preserved example of the stylish 560SEC series.

Cosmetics appear virtually new – Paint depth and gloss is superb.

Unblemished bumper covers and lower side cladding – Exterior brightwork appears virtually as new.

Front and rear polished aluminum bumper finishers are in exceptional condition.

The interior appears uniformly as new with negligible evidence of use – Headliner is flawless.

All leather surfaces remain supple and unblemished – All burlwood surfaces are superb.

Seat back netting is perfect – Steering wheel appears unused.

All switchgear labels and instrument faces/marking remain brilliant and bold.

Door panels show essentially no wear – Door hinge areas are spotless clean.

Carefully inspected and fully recommissioned locally.

Every item functions correctly.

Work included: ‘C’ Service – Air filters – Coolant service – Transmission service – Differential service.

Brake flush – New rear suspension accumulators/struts/bushings.

AC service and new AC compressor – Retrofitted to R134 refrigerant.

New brake booster and master cylinder and more…

A fully prepared investment grade 560SEC. Certainly one of the lowest mile 560SECs extant.

While it’s fairly easy to source extreme low mileage 560SLs, finding a 10k mile 560SEC is virtually impossible.

We’ve been trying for decades to find an SEC of this caliber.

Typically, many 560SLs were a second or third car and received limited use.

SECs tended to be used daily hence the rarity of extreme low mileage examples.

Roy Spencer 650-343-7980 – Global shipping gladly arranged.

Global references available – Pre-purchase inspections available locally.

Providing exceptional cars to the global Mercedes-Benz community for 26 years.

This SEC can be inspected at my facility in Burlingame, CA – 5 minutes south of SFO.

As you might have expected from a 10,000 mile car, it is nearly perfect. Champagne is probably the last color I’d ever pick if I had the choice, but you take what you can get when talking about a car with this kind of mileage. Despite the color, the condition is up there with the best I’ve ever seen with the chrome trim being the real gem of this car. The majority of the time this trim get scratched up from use and people washing it over the years and it’s impossible to replace because of how the fitment is set up and the fact that a lot of it is no longer available from Mercedes. The interior is more of the same with perfect wood, leather and plastics. However, under the hood is leaving me scratching my head. For whatever reason, there is an inordinate amount of dirt and grime present. You can see here and here what I am talking about. I guess the seller wants to keep this car as original as possible and not clean the dirt, but they clearly polished everything else, why not do a little detailing under the hood? In the grand scheme of this car it isn’t a huge deal, but it is just a little odd to me.

The price of $65,000 is what it is. I am not here to tell you if it is worth it or not because this is what you should expect to pay if you want a nearly perfect car with 10,000 miles on it. Are there better deals out there? Of course. That isn’t the point with this car. The point of this car is for the buyer who idealized the 560SEC, but couldn’t afford it when it was new. Now that they have the money, they want it and will spend to get it. I’m sure there is some wiggle room if you are truly a serious buyer for this car so I expect it to seller for a big number and it probably deserves it. I’m sure it will go to a great home, but it surely won’t be mine.

1996 Mercedes-Benz CL420

The Mercedes-Benz W140 Coupe, or C140, is one of those cars that you might have forgotten about until you see one in the wild or stumble across one for sale. There is good reason for that seeing that Mercedes made a little over 400,000 W140 sedans while only producing 26,000 coupes. You can see that is quite a difference in production numbers and now that the youngest W140 is almost 20 years-old, they are only are getting more rare. Today, I wanted to check out the rarest W140 ever produced, the CL420. Just 2,500 CL420/S420 Coupes were produced from 1994 to 1998 and exactly zero ever made it to America. These Coupes used the 4.2 liter M119 V8 borrowed from the sedan and was the smallest engine choice available in the C140. This 1996 up for sale in Spain is probably one of the most well-preserved CL420s out there despite its 112,000 miles. I just wish I could bring it to America.

One of the interesting things about the European-spec W140s is they all have slightly shorter bumpers compared to the North American cars because of the crash testing regulations. This ends up making the cars look just a little more compact and I think tricks your eyes into showing more of the body and less of the bumpers. I personally think just that little bit does wonders for the overall car in its looks. You can’t really tell on this example because of the lighting and the angles of the photographs, but trust me, put these car next to a North American C140 and they are different. Another big difference on these European cars are the wheels. These wheels are called the Eltanin, which are again common on European W140s, but very rare in North America as I don’t think they were even an option. I love the fat, chunky spokes and 18 inches seems to be the perfect diameter for them. The rest of the car looks great and I really did the navy blue exterior with matching navy blue interior. Overall it’s just a great 90s-era example that is just coming into style and will probably always been looked at as cool.

The price a little under €11,900 is fair — I think. I don’t exactly keep up on the car market in Spain so all I can compare it to is what we have here in the United States. If you told me that this car was for sale here for a little under $14,000 I wouldn’t be surprised. We are just starting to creep into a time where really clean W140s are going to be desirable and I think the Coupe is going to be just as sought, if not more. Compare this one to the S600 Coupe I looked at back in May for $19,000 and you’ve got a reasonable starting point. If this car was brought here I don’t think it would have much trouble selling, but the in Spain, who knows.

1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 with 243,059 miles

Last week I checked out a 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 with a little under 112,000 miles and while that number isn’t super high, when broken down by year, it is well above average.  The price of the car reflected the above average mileage, as it should, but it probably wasn’t a great enough deal to be really temping since it still was almost $33,000. Today, I have another S-Class with a bunch of miles and a really attractive price that will probably make anyone consider it just to see what happens. This 1996 S600 with the M120 V12, checks in with a little over 243,000 miles and honestly doesn’t look all that bad considering its age and use. Again, it is all about price when it comes to rolling the dice on this car, but honestly, how can you go wrong?

Seller’s Description: Call or visit our website for more information!

If you are eyeing this car and it looks a little different to you, then you aren’t crazy. This car looks to have a Lorinser body kit, door sill kit and if I had to a guess, an exhaust judging how that doesn’t look like the original muffler tip poking out of the rear bumper. The rest of the car looks how you’d expect a 22 year-old Mercedes with 234,000 miles to look. The paint is a little tired, the wheels are faded and needs repainted, the interior has a bunch of wear spots and goodness knows what is hiding under that hood. The fact that this car made it to this mileage tells me that someone probably took care of it, but you just don’t know with these M120s. It just isn’t as simple as driving it around the block and taking a peek under the hood when considering this W140. Do I think you need to go crazy and have a compression test and spend hours inspecting this car? Probably not. Is it worth throwing up on a lift and scanning the car with the STAR software to see all the values? I think so. I know this car is cheap, but money is money.

For $4,300, there isn’t a ton to complain about. Even if you just did the bare minimum to keep this thing running, I’d think you would be happy with it. Of course, this car should be a 3rd, 4th or 10th car in your stable as there is absolutely no way I’d trust this S600 to be my only form for transportation at all. This is a great way to dip your toe into V12 ownership to get a feel for it without going bankrupt in an afternoon on your first service. I personally don’t love the color combination on this one and I am pretty cold on the looks of the Lorinser kit, so I would probably pass if this one was presented to me even with the super low price tag. If none of this bothers you and you feel like gambling a little, go for it, you won’t can’t do too much damage.

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R

Almost exactly one year ago I took a look at Mercedes-AMG’s latest and greatest car, the GT R. It was a car to rival all the other crazy German GT cars as well as every other track-focused GT car that was out at the time. The specs and the reviews were good and sellers were fresh to try to cash in on the hype with asking prices well over sticker price of around the $200,000 mark. The car I looked out a year ago had an asking price of $260,000 with just 42 miles and while it probably didn’t sell for that, I’m sure a decent profit was made by flipping it. Today, I wanted to circle back around and check in on a GT R with just a handful of miles to see how the prices have held up during its first year. Looking at the numbers, I can’t say that I’m all that surprised.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R on eBay

2018 Mercedes AMG GT R for sale by owner (private sale). One and only owner (myself), no accidents, no scratches, no dings, no stories, clean title and Carfax. 2,208 original miles, Green Hell Magno matte exterior paint with black interior and yellow contrast stitching. Yellow seatbelts, carbon ceramic brakes, etc. completely loaded.
Has all the exterior carbon fiber options from the factory. $208k sticker (See photo of window sticker). Selling only because I need the garage space for another vehicle coming in November. The car has full PPF (Xpel Stealth over the entire vehicle) and is fully tinted. Garaged 100% of the time. Asking $185,000 or Best Offer! Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

This example up for sale in Las Vegas shows just 2,200 miles and is what you’d expect from a car with this mileage. You might find a few tiny flaws, but this is basically a new car. The seller even went as far as doing the entire car wrapped in a clear film, so that is a major plus with this one. The photos and description are light, but it is safe to say you probably won’t find any surprises. AMG really knocked it out of the park with all the color choices with this car, but I still think that the Green Hell Mango was the best choice for the signature color for the GT R. Word is that the AMG Performance Studio is taking orders for custom colors and this GT R painted in a turquoise color seems to confirm that.

So what about the price? Well, this owner is offering up this car for $185,000 which is about a $23,000 discount off the sticker price. That is quite different from the $259,000 from last year but I have to think that number was high to begin with. I know for sure that some special Mercedes customers were buying these at sticker, so you really had to be desperate to pay that much for this car. There are a few other examples out there for around this price, so this seems to be going rate for them right now. I guess the real question is what is going to happen to these down the road. Well, the current rumor mill is predicting a GT R Black Series to be unveiled sometime in 2020, so I guess that will be the real test for the values of these. For now, I expect these to hang strong because honestly, they are well worth it.

2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 Cabriolet

It seems that in my region of America that the seasons went summer straight into winter judging by one day it was 82 degrees and the next it was 44 degrees. That of course means that convertible season is over just like that unless you are a logical person that lives in an area where the weather doesn’t keep you glued to your bed when your alarm goes off in the morning.  If that is the case, I might have a cabriolet that probably isn’t the first model that pops into your head when someone says ”Mercedes convertible”, but that doesn’t make it’s not a worthy example. This 2001 CLK320 Cabriolet up for sale in Connecticut is probably one of the better C208s I’ve run across in a while and even though that the temperatures are freezing outside, I thought it deserved a closer look. It’s worth it if only just to look at these outstanding photos.

Mercedes CLK320 Convertible
Stunning!
Low Miles for the year!

Owned the car for many years. Garage stored and always kept on a battery tender when not in use. Never seen snow. Very Clean car. Hard to find in this condition.

New all season tires, Tie Rods and Steering Damper. Alignment. Fresh oil change (Mobil 1 0w40 always). Brake Flush. CT Emissions are still good.

You’re more than welcome to schedule a viewing and test drive.
Any questions? Ask!

Only issues are the fog lights don’t work and the steering wheel buttons are peeling.

Payment must be made in person with cash or Certified Bank Check.

I have to admit, these photographs really did suck me in. This is how you catch the eye of potential buyers – by taking photos like these. They are a little bit on the ”glamour shoot” side for me, but they did their job to at least get people to look at them and then go from there if need be. As for the car itself, the CLK320 Cabriolet serves one purpose and it is just to be a convertible. That’s it. It’s not fast at all, it handles average at best and the quality of the car is will probably have you wanting more. This was the car you bought if the SLK was too small for you but the SL was too expensive. Yes, the CLK technically has four seats, but let’s be serious, no one over the age of 10 years-old is sitting back there given the leg room. This specific car is a nicely kept example with its Magama Red paint and 85,000 miles. It isn’t perfect as there is some slight wear on the steering wheel buttons, but that is about it for all the flaws I can see. One thing to note is that it is missing the heated seats option, which I suppose is a little bit of an oxymoron in a convertible when you think about it, but at least Mercedes was kind enough not to put a blank switch there to remind you of it.

The price of $7,000 is pretty fair for this car. You can find them cheaper, but probably won’t be near this condition or with this mileage. You can also probably find plenty of R129s for this price, but again, I don’t think the condition would be comparable. From a strictly financial point of view, I think you would do pretty well with this car in terms of depreciation. These are pretty much at the cheapest they’ll ever be so I wouldn’t worry about losing a ton of money on this purchase. Will these cars even become collectible? Probably not. They just aren’t that special in the grand scheme of things but as a car just to enjoy? I don’t see a problem.

1995 Mercedes-Benz S600 with B7+ Armoring

$

Some of my favorite cars that I like to dig into are cars built for or owned by significant individuals. Sometimes it is wealthy or important business people, but most of time with Mercedes-Benz it is heads of state. These cars are usually built with no expense spared because the person riding inside the car is worth far more than whatever it costs to buy the car. This is true of today’s car, a 1995 Mercedes-Benz S600 up for sale in Florida.

This S600 was built by TRASCO, a company in Germany that builds Mercedes that can literally take a bomb and everything up to that. This car is built to ”B7 level”, which is every firearm up to and including armor piecing rifles. You are probably asking who needs this kind of protection in the United States? Well, none other than the Sultan of Brunei. You’ve probably heard the crazy stories of him owning over 7,000 cars and manufacturers building him one-off creations of cars that you don’t even know existed. He has 11 McLaren F1s, 20 Koenigseggs and 300 Ferraris. The guy loves cars and spends his out of this world wealth to buy them and basically let them sit. But again, why would the Sultan of a country off the South China Sea need a car in California? Well, so he has something to be chauffeured around in when he is visiting his 38 million dollar home in Beverly Hills, of course. It doesn’t even end there. This car is supposedly one of four examples built just for the Sultan to be used in America. That’s how crazy this guy is with cars.

This is one impressive build when you look at the stats. Two inch thick glass, bomb curtain on the floor, ballistic steel armor, steel intertube run flat tires, rated against rocket-propelled grenades, a siren and intercom system all while looking totally stock. Of course, this took the weight of the car up to 8,700 pounds and suddenly that V12 seems like a necessity. Looking at the rest of this car, it looks like what you would expect from a W140 with 15,000 miles. You would never know what is hiding inside this S600 and what is it capable of just by looking at it, which is exactly the point. Total stealth protection that is only shown if you really get in trouble with it. Probably really unnecessary to cruise around Beverly Hills in, but when you are as rich as the Sultan, why not?

As for this price, you can’t expect this level of protection to come cheap. The asking price is $93,500 which seems insane for a W140, but if you look at what it costs to buy one of these new from TRASCO, it probably seems reasonable. The seller says this one was a whopping $640,000 in 1995, so you can probably guess how much a new W222 armored to B7+ level will cost. Who would buy it? Like I said, I don’t think this car is really needed for anyone in the United States right now outside of the President and he seems to have his own car situation taken care of. However, I’m sure there are plenty of people in Mexico and South America that could make fine use of this car in certain situations. My guess is that it ends up there or maybe even gets exported to Eastern Europe or Africa. Either way, a cool car with a cool story.

1971 Mercedes-Benz 600

The Mercedes-Benz 600 falls into the category of a cars that I totally love, but have zero interest in owning. Maybe if I won the Powerball for 2.2 billion I could swing buying one and the maintenance on it, but even then it might be pushing it. I’ve gone in pretty deep about what it is like to own a 600 and I honestly think it is cheaper in the long run to bring home triplets from the hospital vs. bringing home a 600. At least there is a chance the babies can take care of you when you are old while the needs of a 600 never stop.

Naturally, that brings me to check out this 1971 up for sale in California. It doesn’t have a famous owner or an interesting story (that I could find) nor does it have any crazy options that makes it stand out. It is a straight-forward 600 in average condition. The best part about it? The price is pretty attractive considering what these usually are listed for.

This 1971 looks is a nice example and does have a cool little touch that isn’t very common. If you look on the front fenders, you can see the bases where a flag pole would sit. Does this mean this was some kind of president or diplomat car? Maybe. I dug though all the records I could find and didn’t see anything about this car being used as such, but is it possible. It also is possible that these flag pole bases were added at some point in the cars life as the 600 and most older S-Classes had a part number for these that you could simply buy straight from Mercedes. Sadly, these parts have been discontinued for a number of years now, so who knows what the story is with the flags. The rest of the car looks pretty good but it does have the chip in the windshield and a major dent in the trunk lid. I’m sure a good body shop could take care of that without much problem, but it is probably not a great idea just to fill it with Bondo and call it a day. The seller is really light on any kind of description for this W100 so any potential buyer would really need to do some due diligence if you are thinking about this one.

This car is priced at $72,000 which I think is a fair ask for this car. Lots of sellers ask over $100,000 for these cars now simply because of the lure and history that they carry but I’m not buying it. All the value is in the condition and service history with these and not just how much bravado you can stir about the car. The giant dent in the trunk lid puts a little bit of a damper on this car as usually the people who buy these usually want them to be as close to perfect as possible, but it probably isn’t a deal breaker. Either way, a cool car at a fair price that should find a home sooner or later.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

What is made in Alabama, seats seven, has 536 horsepower, weighs 5,800 pounds and does 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds? The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, of course! When little Cooper is late for soccer practice and Katilyn late for cheerleading, supermom Debbie can throw them in the GL63 AMG and cruise to an electronically-limited 155 mph to make up time all while hauling a living room set from the Pottery Barn in the rear. This is a monster of a machine that can basically do everything and then some. Does that mean everyone bought them? No. Mercedes said just two percent of GL buyers opted for the GL63 and I’m sure that had a lot to do with the $121,000 price tag. Now that these X166s are a few years old and therefore heavily depreciated, does it make sense to scoop one up? Lets find out.

Here is the very popular do everything suv. Its a 7 seat 550 horsepower monster. Get to the grocery store and pick up the kids faster than any other suv in the area. Cruise out to the beach and be back before the traffic even begins. Want to take your significant other out for a night on the town? Hop into this GL63 and roll up in style. The AMG powered GL has the looks and feel that you have been looking for.

This vehicle is a hilariously display of wealth and unnecessary everything just short of the G63/G65 AMG and R63 AMG. The X166 is a pure seven-seater that fits a need if you actually need a seven-seater or a five-seater with a whole bunch of cargo space. The fact that this thing can pace my E55 AMG to 60 mph is mind-blowing and almost a bit scary seeing it does weigh 5,800 pounds. The interior is pretty nice with a generous amount of wood and leather dash with a bunch of fancy stitching. An Alcantara wheel and giant shift paddles that will never be used is a nice touch and I’m sure the engineers had a nice little laugh when fitting those.

Like I mentioned, this thing was over $121,000 new and now less than four years later it is more than half that price at $54,999. This is about the going rate for them looking at the few dozen available for sale on the used market. History says they are only going to keep dropping in price despite their rarity because those who bought these new are on to newer vehicles and the fact that no one wants to deal with these out of warranty. Even buying a set of massive 295/40ZR21 tires is going to set you back $1,700 and it only gets more expensive from there. If you can afford the massive maintenance and repair bills then I suppose thing would be a good option if you needed that third-row of seats, but if you just like hauling around as much air as a possible, maybe another option might work out better for you.

Tuner Tuesday: 1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC

A few weeks ago I looked at an absolutely pristine 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC with just a little over 10,000 miles. As you might expect, the car was nearly perfect and carried a hefty price tag of $65,000. If you still want it, the car is still for sale and the price has been lowered to $59,000. Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of the car simply because I think the Champagne gold isn’t very attractive at all, but other than that, the car looks like a real winner.

If you are like me and hated the gold but still want a SEC with 10,000 miles, you are in luck with today’s car. This 1985 500SEC up for sale in Miami comes in with 10,726 miles and if you might have noticed by the photos, has some extra little goodies attached to it. What kind of goodies? None other than a nice helping of AMG parts, of course. The price? Well, you won’t be saving any money by picking this car over the 1986, that is for sure.

1985 Mercedes Benz 500 SEC Pre Merger AMG

RMC Miami is now offering for your consideration this Beautiful and original 500 SEC AMG with ONLY 10k MILES!!

Purchased from the original owner who had it since new garaged in New York this car is incredibly original car
is vintage 1980’s. The white paint is in excellent condition very few imperfections, (Great shine), and very straight.
Car has never been in any accident and has a clean carfax. All the AMG panels are in excellent condition and have AMG branding.
Wheels are factory AMG wheels color matchedand wrapped in older Pirelli P6000 tires.
Suspension is AMG optioned Bilsteins with white springs as seen in the photos.

The uber rare Red cloth interior is excellent and original condition with no rips or tears.
The dash, burl wood, headliner, carpets, door panels, and authentic AMG steering wheel are all in great, original condition.
Everything seems to operate as it should, for example, the automatic seat-belt extenders, power seats sunroof, heated seats,
and original radio. The medkit is still present in the medical bag in the rear deck.
As a bonus even the Cell phone on the center console is still on and functioning.

Our AMG is unmodified in anyway and has a strong 5.0L V8 engine. Car turns on and idles perfectly. No check engine lights
or error lights of any kind displaying on the cluster. The 230 Horsepower V8 mated to the automatic transmission makes
this car a fun driver. Having only 10k Miles obviously the car runs and drives like new the suspension is stiff and driver feel is tight.

Undercarriage of the car is very nice. All of the gold plating is still present and the floors are in good condition.
See photos for reference to undercarriage. There is no visible oil leaks or fluid leaks on the engine transmission or rear end.
The SEC is the coupe version of W126 S-class, which is probably the best S-class of all time.
It inherited the W126’s solid build quality, bullet-proof reliability, tasteful and roomy interior.

This is probably one of the coolest W126s I’ve ever come across. The AMG bits on the outside are great but it is the interior that really steals the show for this car. This was actually ordered in factory red velour and it just looks perfect. The little white lines complement the rest of the car so well and just fits right in with the 1980s vibe this car has. The rear seats are just as cool with the high side bolsters and headrests to match the front seats. The four-spoke AMG steering wheel is a nice touch that replaced the non-airbag steering wheel that actually was phased out the next year in 1986 in favor of an airbag. Under the hood, everything is flawless as you might expect but it is just a tad disappointing that this 5.0 liter didn’t have any AMG modifications done to it. My guess is that this car was bought here at a dealer, sent to one of AMGs branches in the US and all these modifications were added on à la carte style. None the less, this car is outstanding in every single way and is now a true classic instead of being look at as ”old and dated” as we looked at a lot of cars from the 1980s.

As you might have guessed, all this perfection doesn’t come cheap. Like I mentioned, this car is priced almost exactly as the 1986 from a few weeks ago at $58,500. Is it worth it? Well, I think it is tough to argue against it. The only real difference outside of the modifications is that this car is a Gen 1 C126 vs a Gen 2 as the 5.0 vs 5.6 suggests, but at this point it really doesn’t matter all that much. I think this car actually has some investment potential, which is a term I don’t say all that much, thanks to the AMG bits that are nearly impossible to find in excellent condition like this. I don’t think this car will have trouble find a new home at all even with the big price tag and I’m so glad we all got to take a closer look at it.

King’s Ransom: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman

Checking back in with my favorite cars ever. This 600 Pullman is still for sale with a new price of $495,000. That is $100,000 more than the original price. An interesting sales tactic to say the least.

Last week I checked out at a 1972 Mercedes-Benz 600 that looked to be cared for by a wealthy stable owner in north Alabama. Today, we have another W100 to examine, but this one has quite a bit more history to sort through. This 1970 600 for sale in Portland, Oregon isn’t the normal standard wheelbase sedan you are used to seeing but rather it’s the rare Pullman version, which is one of 423 ever produced. Of course, those who ordered these cars usually weren’t your normal private citizens. So who was the original owner of this rolling symbol of power?

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman on Hemmings

Year: 1970
Model: 600 Pullman
Engine: 6.3 liter V8
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Mileage: 35,000 km (21,747 mi)
Price: $495,000

1970 Mercedes 600 Pullman

Ordered new by King Idris of Libya the same year he was overthrown by Muammar Gaddafi
Award winning restoration (fully documented)
All mechanicals are new or rebuilt
35,000 km’s (300 km since restoration)
Factory 040G black with bamboo leather
Complete set of factory spares kits and tool pouch
Price: $395,000 firm

The owner of this awesome 600 was King Idris of Libya who according to the build sheet, didn’t have possession of the car for too long. This Pullman was built in July of 1969 but unfortunately Idris was deposed a few months later in a coup d’etat by army officers led by a guy you might have heard of named Muammar Gaddafi. I’ve tracked down a photo of Idris getting out of the car attached below and even more amazingly, the Associated Press actually has video footage of Idris in Turkey on September 2nd, 1969 with the car that can be viewed here. That same day is when Libyan Army officers took control of the country. Naturally, Idris didn’t return to Libya choosing to head to Greece until ultimately going into exile in Egypt until his death in 1983 at the age of 94.

From there, the story is missing some chapters. From what I understand, this car was probably sold off (along with Idris’ other things) and ended up in Japan where it rested for over 20 years. From there, the car made its way to Los Angeles to a new owner where again, it sat. That’s where the current owner found it and sent it over to the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California for extensive restoration in 2011. Now, it resides in Portland along with the owner’s five (that’s not a typo) other short-wheel-base 600s. I do remember seeing this car on display at Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance last year where it took home the Allen C. Stephens Elegance Award — which I have no idea what that means. I don’t run in the same circles as people who have cars nice enough to park on putting greens.

Now that the seller wants to move on from this Pullman, he is asking a whopping $395,000 – firm, no less. I know that the seller of this car wasn’t aware it was Idris’ car until after he purchased it but I’m sure he might have had an idea it had some kind of diplomatic ownership being so well-versed in 600 ownership. Just for comparison sake, there was a 1968 Pullman that was sold at an auction the Netherlands in 2015 that wasn’t a restored example, but still presentable, for just under $200,000. The notion that this car has some sort of increased value because it was owned for a month by a rather unknown King in Libya almost 48 years ago just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t think prior ownership factors into value unless maybe you were taking about one of the 600s owned by Lennon or Elvis and even then I’m weary. So while this 600 Pullman looks outstanding and surely has a cool history, almost $400,000 might just be a pipe dream number.

1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic Estate

$

Winter is mere weeks away and I’m still on the hunt for a new-to-me winter vehicle to battle the snow and ice. My current winter beater, a 1997 Land Rover Discovery that I’ve had for the past 13 years, is on life support. Both front fender wells are rusting away at an alarming pace, the 4.0 liter V8 that has been around since the mid-1960s (!) is sounding awfully crunchy and I swear it gets around 11 mpg. I told myself I was going to buy something reliable to replace it, so I started hunting for a Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX470/GX470 only soon to find out that you can’t buy one for $2,200 like you can Land Rovers. They aren’t all that plentiful on the used market thanks to people taking them to their graves. Well, the time is ticking and I might have to consider options. One of those options is a Mercedes-Benz W210 4Matic because I might as well stick to what I know. Even better, an E320 4Matic Estate would fit the bit quite nicely with the extra cargo space and no one would confuse it with my E55 if I bought one in silver. Well, wouldn’t you know this 1999 popped up for sale that would fit my needs quite well. The only problem is that it is 2,600 miles away. Such is life.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic Estate on eBay

Year: 1999
Model: E320 4Matic Estate
VIN: WDBJH82F1XX025941
Engine: 3.2 liter V6
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 149,723 mi
Price: No Reserve Auction

This 1999 MERCEDES E320 4MATIC ALL WHEEL DRIVE WAGON was sold new in the San Francisco Bay area on July 15, 1999. The car is finished in very rare color option #257 Circongruen mica/Dark Turquoise Metallic.
The cabin is trimmed with #205A Mushroom Pebble Quartz Leather with optional Heated front seats with burl walnut accents. Factory amenities include electically adjustable front seats with the memory package which includes the sterring column. It has dual climate controls and a electically steering column, dual air bags as well as side air bags. This car was built in Germany and shipped to California on 5/26/99 as a California spec car which is rare as most ALL WHEEL DRIVE vehicles were sold in the United States to locations where it snows more often than in the San Francisco Bay Area where it last snowed one day over 40 years ago.

This is a California Car which means unlike most of the 4-Matics were sold to areas where they rust out.
If you are looking for a pristine show car this is not it, if you are looking for an affordable sport wagon with All Wheel Drive with a powerful Mercedes V6 with 221 horspower capable of 150 plus miles per hour (so I am told) that gets good gas mileage, that you can take the dogs in, or pack up the gang and take sking or kayaking or mountain biking or any out door activitys and in a pinch all the seats fold flat wnat two pwople can sleep and with space for up to 7 people with 7 shoulder seats belts with all the saftey features like Anti lock brakes, Traction Control and not only front air bags but side front air bags as well with out breaking the bank look no further as this is the car.

The 4-Matics where built in Austria and designed to be the ultimate All wheel drive wagon with the original MSRP at over $50,000. This Mercedes Benz was designed for areas like the Swiss Alps where Ultimate Traction in slippery conditions is a concern this system increases traction and improves performance on slippery roads, or if you can use it like I did for taking my dogs to the beach and to kids sporting events you would never know it is an ALL WHEEL DRIVE vehicle as it drives just like a Mercedes
Why would you buy an over priced Japanese vehicle made by Fuji HEavy Industries in Lafayette Indiana when you could have an actual Mercedes Benz made in Germany/Austria the world leader in high quality luxury automobiles that will do the same thing for less than a preowned Hyundai

This is a fully loaded car with dual power front seats with memory that are both heated with two levels of heat as well as dual climate controled air conditioning and heat where the driver can have the ice cold air blasting at 65 degrees and the other front passenger can have her controls set at 85 degrees. The car has the optional high end BOSE sound system mated to an Alpine CD system and is equipped with an I-pod connection in the glove box. It also has a factory Alarm

At first glance on the outside of this S210, you would think everything is pretty nice. No rust since it is a California car and no major body damage from what I can see. Then you open up the doors. This is a special level of dirty that is usually reserved for cars on Craigslist that have photos with a thumb over half the lens. I know these wagons were bought to be used as work horses, but that doesn’t mean you beat the horse while you are working it. Even the dash has a giant hole in a speaker cover that I had no idea was even possible. Sadly, this car is probably at the point of no return even if you tried to clean it up a little because of how much of leather is ripped and worn away. I’m sure this car having six owners probably contributed to the mess here, but my goodness is it sad inside once was a nice car.

This auction is no reserve and I’m not going to predict any big numbers for this car. The W210 is plentiful in California thanks to the lack of rust that usually kills these cars so it’s not like someone is desperate to find one no matter what the condition. If you made me guess I would say it will bring maybe $2,000 if someone really is in love with the color of this car, but I have a hard time even at that price because of how bad the interior is. The photos are amazing, but that ends up hurting the car because it shows how bad everything really is inside. Who knows, maybe this one lives on for another 19 years. No reason it can’t — unless you bathe it in salt.

After looking at my favorite Pullman ever, I thought I’d circle back and check out another one of my favorite Pullmans that is still for sale. This W220 has a new price of $46,888, which is a $13,000 reduction from the price a year ago. Find it here.

Finally. After so many times looking at aftermarket limousine conversions (with questionable build quality) on Mercedes I finally found a real factory Pullman. This is a 2001 S500 Pullman six seater with the AMG Advanced Mobile Media System. And here this whole time you thought AMG was just good at making cars that burn tires. This is a fully mobile office computers, desks, live televisions, DVD players and 43 kbps internet service. Well, maybe stick to your smartphones for the internet service. But this car is a great example how well a limo can be done with the right materials and planning. Lets check it out.

With this flagship model derived from the S-Class, the Stuttgart-based automobile brand is continuing a tradition of manufacturing prestige limousines which dates back over 70 years. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman can easily be distinguished from the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class by virtue of a wheelbase which has been extended by another full metre. The suffix Pullman alone is enough to give away the noble character of the new limousine: back in the mid-19th century, the American industrialist George Mortimer Pullman from Chicago in the state of Illinois made a name for himself by building lavishly equipped train carriages. Ever since then, the name has been synonymous with maximum comfort on wheels.

AMG have taken the Pullman a step further, and transformed it into mobile office. The AMG Advanced Mobile Media System, as it is called, comprises a high-performance, top-class integral solution which will allow business people to have all the usual facilities of an office at their disposal even when they’re out on the road.

This high-end system is based on a specially developed, high-performance AMG in-car PC. Thanks to an HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) modem or a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) modem, the compact computer ensures high-speed internet access, allowing passengers to surf the web or send and receive e-mails during the journey. The transmission rate of 43 kbps guarantees quick access to the World-Wide Web.

Large 10.4 monitors are available for surfing the internet. The flat monitors swivel out of the multimedia console at the push of a button. The separate keyboard is neatly stored away in a ruffled pocket positioned in front of the seat cushion and can be placed on one of the two tables available for working when in use. The monitors can also be used for watching the television programmer currently selected or even the latest movies thanks to the DVD player. Thanks to a second TV tuner, different programmers can be watched on the monitors at the same time.

As well as housing monitors, notebooks and tables, the console also contains the AMG in-car PC and features a separate power supply. The high-power rechargeable battery allows occupants to make full use of the multimedia system for about 30 minutes after the engine has been switched off.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman models leave the factory equipped with AIRmatic air suspension, the ESP electronic stability program and a five-speed automatic transmission.

For all the hate I spew towards the W220, this is a great looking car. Even it being a pre-facelift 2001 model year, I dig everything about it. Maybe it is because it only has a little over 34,000 miles and isn’t totally worn out yet, but everything just looks different about this car. The leather looks better, the wood looks better and even the body looks better. In the rear of this car is where everything comes together. Everything is where it should be and functions as it should. Yes, all this technology is horribly dated and an iPad could do everything that this car does, but I like to think of it when this car was new. 2001 was a good 17 years ago and this is what it took to have an office on wheels. Mercedes and AMG nailed it on all fronts with this car.

So what does this cost? Well, those 17 years ago this was a $500,000 car. Yes, insanely expensive, but you have to think of it in terms of production. If three of four people who make well over $100,000 can work in the back of this thing in while traveling, then it is totally worth it inside of letting those people sit and stare out the windows. The price today is actually not too crazy in my eyes at a little under $60,000. I guess if you really wanted to you can still use this car as an executive hauler and tuck the screens away to use tables and get just as much done.  It for sure is cheaper than a new Sprinter but then again this is a 17 year-old W220 S500. The last thing you need is a car full of people heading to an important meeting and the Airmatic system fails. Either way, cool vehicle and I’m glad it exists.
