Tuner Tuesday: 1999 Mercedes-Benz G500

Have your eye on that G63 AMG 6X6 Brabus B700 but can’t swing the $1,895,000 price tag? I might have a solution for you. You are probably looking at the title and seeing 1999 G500 and looking at the photo not seeing a 1999 G500. I have an answer to that question as well. This W463 started life as your regular G500 and was transformed into a faux Brabus B700 6X6 by master craftsmen in Eastern Europe. You are probably chuckling when I say ”master craftsmen” and ”Eastern Europe” in the same sentence, but hear me out on this one.

As you might have noticed this G is not in Miami like the listing says, but is actually in the city of Lutsk in Western Ukraine parked outside of a khrushchyovka and a store that sells fertilizer. Mercedes made less than 100 6x6s in total and Brabus converted a handful to their B700-spec so it’s not you can just go grab a 6×6 body from the local parts department. Being a former resident of Ukraine, I reached out to this seller to ask a laundry list of questions as to how this 6×6 came to be. The seller said the entire body was custom fabricated by his team and all the carbon fiber pieces, including the giant fenders, were made custom by his factory that molds carbon fiber pieces. How he got all the specs and dimensions, he wouldn’t tell me. Simply ”its secret”. When I asked if Mercedes or Brabus contacted him, seeing as he somehow replicated one of their most exclusives vehicles ever that sold over $700,000, he replied that they had not, but he hopes to sell the 6×6 before they do. As for the mechanicals, it is a 6×6 system that fully functions and mentioned that while it is fun to drive, actually parking this monster is less than ideal. Oh yeah, we haven’t even talked about the interior yet.

As impressive and spot on as the exterior is, the interior maybe leaves a little to be desired. You open the doors and are immediately reminded that this is a 1999 G-Wagen, not a 2015. They did cover every square inch with leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber to try to mimic the genuine Brabus interior, but it just falls short. I don’t doubt that the materials are high quality, but the design of a 1999 W463 interior just looks too dated to me for it to be this loud and extravagant. Under the hood, the stock M113 V8 remains so the six-pack exhaust tips probably aren’t needed, but it should have enough muscle to power all six wheels reasonably enough. The seller even did a walk around video on this G to show you it isn’t held together by pig fat and honestly, it would fool a lot of people into thinking it is a factory Brabus B700 — until you open the doors or the hood.

This asking price is $250,000 and when you do the math, probably is pretty reasonable. Like I said earlier, a real B700 is $1,900,000. So you can have all the looks and some of the utility of a real one for a cool $1,650,000 discount. Seems like a no-brainer if you really want a 6×6. If you are a person who has a budget of $250,000 and this is your only fun vehicle? Probably not a wise investment. I do think that ultimately this will sell rather easily even with it’s quarter of a million price tag, just where might be the question. I’m sure buyers in the middle east would love this thing for the sand and buyers in snowy European countries would enjoy this in the winter time. Just another example of what can be done with a little bit of money and fabrication.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate

Last week I took a look at a rather haggard 1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate in my never-ending quest for a daily driver when the snow starts flying. Reaction to this car was mixed and it ended up selling for $1,757. A fair price for the condition. In the comments on the S210 one of our readers (Thanks, Doug) pointed out that a really nice W124 Estate would be a much better option compared to the W210. Naturally, I took a look at the car and I can’t say I disagree. This 1995 E320 Estate up for sale in Virginia isn’t painted in the most desirable color and even has the love them or leave them chrome wheels, but I’m totally smitten for it.

This wagon is speaking to me. Like I said, the color isn’t my first choice but the rest of the car is so handsome I can overlook it. It does have a nasty hole in the rear bumper that for whatever reason is covered with some stickers, but other than that, I’m not seeing a ton of flaws on this S124. The interior of this car really shines with very little flaws I can see and it even has an updated factory radio to keep the OEM look. Another thing to note is that on the front seats you can see the little control boxes between the seat bottom and the center console which is the ultra-rare multi-contour option. Honestly I’m seeing any wear anywhere on this interior which is rare even with a relatively low 125,000 miles. Under the hood looks well enough also with no alarming things I can see just from the photos. All in all, this one looks to be a real winner from the photos.

This is a reserve auction and I’m really curious where it is set. If this estate didn’t have the hole in the rear bumper, it would bring $7,500 easily and maybe even touch $10,000. The demand for these facelift S124s is only growing stronger and examples like this one are getting snatched up. Even with the rear bumper damage I still think there will be a bunch of bids on this one but I just don’t know if the reserve is going to scare people off. My guess is that it won’t, but I’ve seen stranger things.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E200

No, this isn’t a typo. This is a 1995 Mercedes-Benz E200 — in Chicago. Even stranger, this is a right-hand drive car from Great Britain. Why and how did it end up in Chicago? I have no idea. Just to refresh, the 200E/E200 was the base model of the W124 that came with either the M102 or M111 inline-4 engine. This car has the later M111 that produced 134 horsepower and 140 lb·ft of torque. Not a powerhouse by any means, but enough to get you moving. The E200 also came with a cool cloth interior with those rad 90s patterns that everyone loves so much now. But as you might have noticed, this is not a stock E200.

E200 Sedan
Mercedes Benz E200 Sedan Right Hand Drive AMG Body Package Only 77k Must See!!!

Image may be NSFW.

This normally conservative and plain E200 has been draped in every AMG appearance part, both real and fake, to give it a look of a much more aggressive car. On the outside, it looks like some AMG bumpers along with matching sideskirts, an AMG duckbill, some AMG wheels and a painted white grille. Inside, some carbon fiber trim has been stuck on everywhere, some white gauges, an aftermarket headunit, a stop/start shift knob that probably isn’t functional and some fake AMG badges. Under the hood, totally stock. This car is all bark and zero bite, which is all fine. It just seems odd that someone spent all this money on modifications on literally the slowest and least-powerful W124 produced. How this car ended up in the US is a giant question mark as well. The Carfax says it first was registered in 2005 in Washington, so maybe it was brought in though Canada first. This car shouldn’t even be able to imported in the US under the 25-year rule because it has the M111 that was never sold here and well, it’s right-hand drive. All questions that the dealer maybe has answers for.

Now this car is listed at $13,995 and I personally think that is just short of insane. This is a car that is the lowest of the low in terms of the model range, isn’t setup for driving in the US, has a bunch of questionable aftermarket parts and might even have issues being registered in your home state. You can buy plenty of really nice W124s in every guise for this money and if you stretch your budget a little more, might even be able to snag a well-used 500E. The math just isn’t adding up for me as to why this car is worth $14,000 given all that surrounds it. I know imported cars are really cool and 90s cars are hot right now, but this is no way you can convince me that this is a $14,000 car. Maybe I’m wrong and you see it another way, but I doubt I’m alone on this.

2007 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG

There aren’t enough words to describe a Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG — both good and bad. You can probably guess the bad words, but I’m pretty high on these cars, especially the W221 chassis. I think the most impressive part is that you could have 604 horsepower and 738 ft-lb of torque in a normal four door sedan that can give you slow and gentle massage, all while being totally silent. Normally, to get that kind of power you would need to buy something Italian that is reliable and usable as a wild pack of possums. (Or maybe just buy a 911 Turbo.) Yes, you paid dearly for an S65 when new, over $200,000, but you got what you paid for. A vehicle with hyper car power that a grandmother could drive. Now that we are over a decade in to W221 S65 and they’ve reached Honda Accord levels of purchase price, is it worth rolling the dice on one? Maybe if you are a little crazy. Although this 2007 in Utah might just be the one to get.

To say you have to be careful when purchasing an S65 is a massive understatement. I’m not going to go into every possible weak spot on these cars, but on this specific car the seller has the Vehicle Master Inquiry from Mercedes that is over nine pages long. The font on those pages is pretty small too. Thankfully, everything seems to be fully sorted on this car and it looks to be a turn-key and go example. For being 11 years-old and having 115,000 miles, this one looks outstanding both inside and out. Even the paint has been fully corrected to a super high level. This is exactly the kind of car you want to buy because S65 ownership isn’t something you dip your toe into, you have to fully commit or it will be most certainly a bad experience.

The seller of this car is asking a reasonable $26,999, which isn’t the cheapest S65, but like I’ve said over and over, that isn’t the name of the game here. I’m willing to bet that with some fancy math, you can calculate how much cheaper it would be to just pay a little more up front than try to do the whole ”I bought these cheapest XXX in the country” that seems to be all the rage with the YouTubers right now. I hate to keep repeating myself, but if you really want a $220,000 experience for almost a tenth of the price, this wouldn’t be a bad way to go. Just make sure to be fully prepared when you are presented with a suspension error message on that fancy display.

2002 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

A few weeks ago I checked out a hilariously ostentatious 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG that literally could do almost everything. As head-shaking as the GL63 is, that thing just gets lost in the sea of all the super SUVs out there with 500 horsepower and 325 wide tires that get used, abused and discarded to the Buy-Here, Pay-Here lots of the world right as the warranty runs out. We can say that about a lot of these SUVs all the way back to one of the first super-SUVs to start this power war: the ML55 AMG. It has been a few years since I’ve taken a look at one, but the short of it is AMG borrowed the M113 5.4 V8 from the W210 E55 and somehow squeezed it into the short snout of the W163. They added some different bumpers and them some 285 wide tires to keep this thing from flipping over. It did 60 mph in under 6 seconds and was generally pretty stout outside of the common issues that plagued all W163s. Over 15 years later, these are becoming relatively rare thanks to just a few thousand ever made and well, the W163 not exactly being the most well-built machine ever. This 2002 up for sale in Florida seemed to dodge a life of abuse thanks to the just 16,300 miles on the odometer. Is it time to maybe think about snagging one of these?

This is probably the cleanest ML55 I’ve ever come across. Yes, the 16,300 miles have a ton to do with this, but to keep a W163 looking this clean isn’t an easy task. The interior looks outstanding and you can see why there was a ton of appeal for these when new as opposed to what the majority of MLs out there on the used market look like. The outside is the same story without any flaws that I can see and under the hood is the same story. It always impressed me how they shoehorned the 5.4 liter M113 into this engine bay and even had to go as far as mounting the coolant overflow tank on the firewall. The upper radiator hose is snaked around just inches from the fan is also another crazy design they came up with. Generally, these things are pretty stout, but in line with the prior observations, any kind of maintenance is a real pain because of the space. Tires are also a little bit of a pain for these thanks to the odd 285/50/18 size. Pirelli offers their Scorpion Zero tire in this size that looks great, but it isn’t much of a winter tread at all if you are in an area where that is a factor.

Don’t look now, well, actually look now, but these are starting to becoming cool and probably will snatched up by collectors very soon, if not already. They aren’t total disasters like Cayenne Turbos or Touaregs, so having one that is driven sparingly isn’t the end of the world. The really low production numbers isn’t hurting its case either with just a few thousand ever made. Is this going to be the next 500E or 190E 16v? Of course not. But a vehicle you can snag for a reasonable price, enjoy and not lose much money on when it comes time to sell? I think that is a reasonable assumption. The $19,000 for this is probably a little much, but I suppose it is tough to argue against. You probably aren’t going to find a cleaner one.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E420

I’ve said numerous times that the W124 Mercedes-Benz 400E/E420 is one of the forgotten gems from Mercedes in the past 35 years or so that won’t cost you a ton of money to buy or live with. It still is modern enough to be a daily driver if you wish and since it is a W124, you won’t hate your life driving it. The .034 E420 offers the punch of the torquey M119 V8 without having to spend $25,000 on a .036 500E. The facelift version, like this 1994 we have today up for bid in New York, is especially attractive with its two-tone paint and really clean appearance for having almost 176,000 miles. This example has some heavy maintenance items already completed and is actually a one-owner car. Question is, are you willing to pay the slightly higher asking price for this example?

Serviced by Mercedes dealership and German car expert on Long Island since 2008. Always garaged, never had an accident. Hood and front fenders were repainted after a concrete truck spilled liquid concrete at construction site. Timing chain was replaced at ca. 100 000 miles, transmission fluid changed in 2016. Regular oil changes were done at each 3000 miles. There are 3 small areas of rust: at windshield frame L+R and under right back light.
Everything works: e.g. cold A/C, sunroof, all switches, windows, locks, heating etc. Transmission is smooth. Engine starts well, no smoke or odor, and runs powerful. Transmission shifts well, reverse engages firmly.
Leather is smooth without blemishes or cracks. All materials on interior look spotless.

This car really caught my eye because it looks really clean in the photos. The description highlights the maintenance with the big timing chain job being done at 100,000 miles. Usually the M119 doesn’t need a new chain or guides at that mileage, but I suppose it can’t hurt for it to be replaced already. The interior is nice with no rips or tears in the leather and the wood is especially nice for 176,000 miles. This car isn’t all good news as it has some rust under the passenger side taillight and under the windshield frame – all places that aren’t fun to try to remedy. I think if you are buying this as a daily driver it wouldn’t be a deal breaker, but if this was to be a long-term car, I might look elsewhere.

The seller started the bidding at $5,750 without reserve so that is the floor on this car. It was previously listed at the same price and didn’t receive any bids, so I don’t have high hopes this time around for this E420. The mileage and rust are probably holding it back a little and something like this is always a tough sell without seeing it in person first. I think something in the $4,000 range might be a better starting point for this car if the seller really wants it gone. Maybe some better photos would help this one too, but right now as it sits I think the seller will be holding on to it a little longer.

On Saturday, I will say goodbye to my 1983 240D that I’ve rehabbed and cared for the past two years. It was a classic Craigslist love story of everything looking great in the photos, but after traveling a long distance to go buy it, the car wasn’t nearly as cherry as the photos showed or the seller described. Funny how that happens. Still, I reluctantly took it home after negotiating a whopping $100 off the asking price. The past two years have been fun as it seems like everyone loves the thing, except my passengers who had to be on time somewhere as 67 horsepower is no match for moms in their 300 horsepower minivans and the concept of time in general. I wouldn’t have bought the car if it wasn’t for the Labrador Blue paint and matching hubcaps, and that is probably why it sold to its new owner. I think the W123 chassis is still brilliant and feels so damn good even after 35 years, but it just can’t keep up with the war that is daily traffic. My W116 300SD is a far better car for that, hence why I chose to keep that one even though it isn’t nearly as handsome. Not a knock of the W123, but the W116 S-Class was made to be the best sedan in the world and at the time it was pretty damn close to being that, even compared to the much more expensive cars from Bentley and Rolls-Royce. I’m not the only one who feels that way.

Today’s car, as you might have noticed, also has a pretty great color. This European-spec Pea Green 1979 300D shows just a hair under 25,000 miles on the odometer and should be a pretty mint example. I was super excited to dig into it to see a time-capsule car, but unfortunately, this falls just a little bit short. Let me explain why.

This car really puzzles me. The interior is really nice outside of some dirty carpets and a dirty armrest, but the exterior of this car doesn’t scream 25,000 miles to me. If you take a look at all the photos, you’ll see a whole handful of odd things going on with the car in terms of wear and tear. Right off the bat you can see that the lower air dam is dented in with a generous amount of rust forming on it. Around back, the rear bumper was hit so hard that it left a nice dent in it as well as pushed the entire bumper up at an angle so it is crooked. The jack points look like they have rusted out, repaired and hastily sprayed with black paint so much you can see the run marks. On the photos with the car in the air, you can see all the suspension components have a heavy amount of rust on them and even underside of trunk pockets are showing rust. Not to pile on, but the inside of the taillight on the driver’s side has a bunch of cracking paint as well. Under the hood, the radiator looks like it was boiled so hot that it literally melted the paint off of it. I can honestly say that is the first time I have seen that on a W123. Another crazy thing is that fan shroud was broken off and plastic welded back together in two sports. Lastly, all four tires are mismatched and old enough to legally buy cigarettes. There is a bunch of other tiny things like the old style hand primer pump that surely leaks fuel, but I think I made my point with this car. If you put a gun to my head and made me guess the miles on this car, I would for sure say 125,000 or even 225,000, not 25,000. It just doesn’t add up for me.

What does this mean? Probably not a whole lot for potential buyers. The bids already came in hot and heavy and probably aren’t going to slow down. The color is what will sell that car and all these flaws are probably going to be overlooked. Yes, the keen eye buyers will pass on this one, but those who just want a cool little run around will live with the flaws and boast about the mileage. My guess? I wouldn’t be shocked if it hit $10,000. Does it deserve it? Not in my book.

A number of weeks ago I looked at a heavily armored 1995 Mercedes-Benz S600 that was built for none other than the Sultan of Brunei. It was an 8,700 pound tank of a car that probably is on par with some tanks as to how much combat fire it can withstand. Today, I came across another literally bulletproof Mercedes that can handle everything just short of armor piecing rounds. This 2011 G55 AMG that is built to a B6 level of armoring is originally a vehicle from the Middle East and somehow is now in California. Just like the S600 you would think that this is just another standard G55 that is hopping around Los Angeles. Then you open the doors to see that clearly isn’t the case.

Like I said, unless you have a keen eye of much bezel a G-Wagen windshield has, you would have no idea what this thing is packing. Open the doors and you are presented with a fixed pane of glass that is mutiple inches thick. You can see that the doors and door panels had to be heavily modified and that is pretty clear judging on how the panel for the seat controls is basically hanging out of the door card by its wires. When you open the rear hatch, you are greeted with what looks like a metal enclosure that is covered when some kind of fabric just so it doesn’t look too much like a bank vault. The rest of the interior looks exactly like how you would expect a 2011 G55 to look with Designo touches on the seats and door cards. I can’t imagine how heavy this W463 feels when you drive it down the road. These things were refrigerators on wheels to begin with and I can only guess as to what it feels like now. The poor brakes and rotors can’t have much of a life span at all and even the tires are probably smoked after a short time. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of this car to put 20 inch wheels with a lower profile tire on this G55 since it is clearly the weak spot of this entire vehicle, but I’m guessing where it is at right now in Los Angeles isn’t the much dangerous place in the world. Either way, something that can be changed rather quickly if need be.

The asking price of just shy of $100,000 is actually pretty reasonable in my eyes. Other 2011 G55s are still in that $60,000-75,000 range right now depending on mileage, so you aren’t paying much of a premium for the armoring. You could also look at it as a massive inconvenience as the windows don’t roll down and this thing probably weighs close to 9,000 pounds so all the problems that go along with that. Like I said before with the Sultan’s car, if you are the type of person who actually needs this kind of protection, money probably isn’t that much of a worry to you. What is inside this G is far more valuable that what you would pay for it, so it makes sense if you are on that level. My guess? A lot of people in Mexico and South American can make good use of this thing.

1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD with 8,200 miles

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Last week I took a skeptical look at a 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300D with a claimed 24,000 miles. I say claimed because either that mileage is incorrect or someone had lots of hard love with it. Somehow I ended up on a tangent on the W123 vs W116, cars I both currently own, and how I much prefer the W116 chassis. I showed this in the 300D listing, but one of the coolest things that was included when I bought my 1980 300SD was a little snippet from a car magazine from sometime when these cars were new in 1978-1980. It reads, ”In the final analysis, that’s what makes the 300SD such a special car. It is prestigious as anything but a Rolls, but also frugal as an economy car and faster over the road than almost anything. It also feels so secure. All things considering, including the fuel economy, the 300SD is the best sedan in the world. Period.” High praise for sure, but you’d expect that level of car from something that cost over $30,000 (roughly $100,000 now) when new. It’s tough to say the W116 300SD didn’t stand the test of time either as nearly 39 years later, I’m still driving mine every day. Not a single thing rattles or shakes in the interior and I get a consistent 27 miles per gallon. Now if I could just find some nice Euro bumpers I’d be all set.

All that brings me to today’s car, a 1980 with just 8,197 miles on it. The story with this car is that the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in California got it’s hands on it after first servicing with 1,300 miles and then giving it a full reconditioning in 2009. I believe the Classic Center actually bought this car a few years and put it up for sale with 7,900 miles for a tidy sum of $50,000. Now, this car has the nearly 8,200 and the price has gone up even more. How much?

Ultra Low Mileage Mercedes 300 SD

First off, this probably the lowest mile W116 300SD out there in the wild and along the same lines the nicest one as well. As you might expect, the car is nearly perfect in every way. It doesn’t look like a new car, especially under the car, but rather one that has done the 8,000 miles or so and is 39 years-old. The only super nit picky thing I found was the air filter lid is held down by a regular nut and not a wing nut like supplied from the factory. I always look for that when checking out OM617 cars and very rarely do I see them because they are usually lost when changing the air filter. All these photos aren’t the greatest so I can’t see every little detail, but washing the wheels to clean the brake dust off them would be another thing I can moan about. Other than that, this one seems to be the real deal.

Now the price here is interesting. Like I said, the Classic Center listed the car for $50,000 a few years ago and it sat for a while with them. So either someone bought it and sold it/traded it in at this dealer or the dealer themselves bought it to try to flip it. The asking price is now nearly $60,000 plus the 200 miles from when it was for sale from before. This dealer has many cars for sale in the seven-figure range, including two Bugatti Veyrons, so I suppose they can risk $50,000 in order to make $10,000. Is this car worth that? Tough to say. No one really loves the W116 outside of European-spec 6.9s because of their ugly headlights and bumpers so values have stayed pretty stagnant for as long as I can remember. You can pick up a clean 300SD in the $5,000-7,500 range if you look hard enough and there are always those $3,000 Craigslist specials out there that are on their last legs. You have to be absolutely in love with this car to pay $60,000 and I can say that I’m pretty smitten for my car, but there is no way in the world I’d spend $60,000 to have my odometer rolled back 220,000 miles. I guess it only takes one and this car is a lot easier to look at when you have a showroom full of Bugattis.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 300TD

It has been some time since I’ve looked at the world’s most favorite wagon, the W123 Mercedes-Benz 300TD. We’ve been at the point with them for a while where unless it is an absolute heap, they are all worth saving or at least maintaining to the point of usable service. Sadly, some of the S123s ended up being used as work horses or straight up beater cars that took them to the point of no return. Today’s car, a 1983 in New Jersey, is one of those cars. Cosmetically, this one is pretty far gone and thanks to an odometer that stopped working who knows how many moons ago, mechanically it is a bit of a question mark as well. Question is, if it is cheap enough, is it worth it?

1983 Mercedes 300TD Wagon
Turbocharged 5cyl Diesel
Restore while driving, Great investment project

Unfortunately, I need to sell one of my projects to move forward with the others. I decided to let go of this one. These wagons are getting tough to find and the prices keep rising. This is one of the few vehicles that you can put money into and still get it back out when you sell.

This one runs and drives, engine runs great. The picture of the exhaust is while the car is running, as is the picture of the gauges. No smoke. Mileage reads 107000 but not exactly sure on the mileage because the odometer is stopped. Judging by the clean, rust free underside of the car, it probably doesn’t have too many more miles than that.

The outside: Most body panels are in great shape with the exception of the passenger side fender which is dented, and the passenger side quarter panel which is both dented and rusty. Why the rust has been almost completely isolated to this panel I’m not sure. Pics will show more.

The interior: Good overall condition. Previous owner had a big switch and wire coming from the battery through the passenger door and stuck to the dash. This was run to the blower fan for the heater. I removed all that and fixed the correct buttons in the console. when I purchased the car, the console was badly damaged from the radio being stolen. I bought a good used console and replaced the bad one. Carpet is faded in the back, which hides the factory 3rd seat. This is a desirable option in the wagon.

The mechanics: Engine starts up and runs beautifully as would be expected for these old diesels. Transmission shifts through all gears with no issues at all. Brakes were not working at all so I replaced the master cylinder. This solved the non working issue but they are still spongy. May need to be bled again, car stops but with good pedal pressure. A/C probably doesn’t work, defrost does. All power windows are in operating condition. Needs the odds and ends that you would expect of a 35 year old vehicle.

Overall an easy project. A good Father/Son car if that still happens these days! If you are a Mercedes person, you know how hard these are getting to find. Prices keep going up! My plan is to eventually get myself a perfect sedan for a daily driver.

Transportation is your responsibility. Car will start right up and drive onto a trailer. I would not drive it a far distance because of spongy brakes and also because it probably hasn’t been on a long trip in quite a few years if ever. You probably should give it a good going over safety wise. Clear NJ title in my name ready to be transferred.

Any other questions, ask away. I’ll answer em to the best of my knowledge but I am neither a mechanic or a Mercedes expert. I just like cool things! Thanks for looking and bid bid bid!

I really don’t like taking sellers to task on stuff that they own, but I have no idea what makes you say this car is an ”investment” or ”great shape” at all. This thing looks like it lived in a swamp. Every single panel is messed up and I wouldn’t be surprised if they used a horsehair paint brush to paint this car. There are literally giant rust bubbles forming under the paint from the terrible prep work they did on it and goodness knows what is going on with that front passenger side fender. The ad literally says ”Most body panels are in great shape” and I’m wondering if I’m looking at the wrong car. Even the door latches have gold paint on them for some reason. The biggest problem is the massive rot hole on the bottom of the body right before the rear wheel arch. It isn’t any better on the other side either because you can still see some body filler poking through the paint where they tried to fix that hole. Inside, the car is totally filthy and there is probably a reason there are no photos of the dash area or center console. The seller says the odometer stopped working, but that isn’t even the correct gauge cluster for a 1983 300TD, so goodness knows how many miles this thing has. The photo of the engine seems to support this thing having a bunch of miles given how much blow-by is coming out of the crankcase. Did I mention the brakes don’t work all that well either? I know you have to be optimistic when selling a car and present it’s good side, but this is just way off base in terms of how sad this car really is.

The seller started this auction at $1,795 and that is probably all that it is worth as it sits right now. The body is too far gone with the rust and dents that unless you take it down to the bare metal and mechanically it is a total unknown because you don’t know the miles. Looking at all the condensation in the rear window and the clogged up water drains, I’m willing to be this thing leaks a bunch of water into it as well. If you want to buy this 300TD and drive it as-is, I see no problem with that. But putting any kind of money in it besides the bare necessities? I think you are wasting your time. At least the car has nice wheels, I’ll give it that.

Last week I looked at the cleanest 2002 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG that I’ve seen and the comments on it were a mixed bag. We actually had a few owners of ML55s chime in and report their experiences with them. There were no ”Alabama trashcan” comments, but we were awfully close. I thought that would be the end of me looking at the W163s for a while outside of something really crazy and it turns out something crazy did pop up. This 2002 ML500 in California comes with an impressive 325,000 miles and looks like it has about a third of that. Chalk it up to some loving owners and the California climate for keeping this thing looking as nice as it does but maybe it is time to give the W163 some credit. Just a little?

This is an EXTREMELY rare, 2002 Mercedes ML500, Sport Edition. It has been in my possession since 2004, when it had 30,000 miles on it. It has a CLEAN Title/

It has been meticulously maintained, serviced, and garaged all of its life. It was primarily was driven on the highway until coming to Los Angeles. The interior is in immaculate shape. I also have 90% of the service records.

This car has been an absolute joy to drive, never misses a beat, has never left me stranded, and has one of the most solid engines (the M113 V8), and transmissions (the 722.6) that Mercedes has ever made. I am selling the truck as had a baby and looking for something newer while transporting precious cargo.

**For those specifically looking for an older ML, this is the 2002-2005 variant, which received a complete overhaul from the first generation of ML’s Mercedes produced from 98-2001. This is known as the “facelift” model.

Happy to answer any and all questions. The datacard with all of the factory options is in the pictures.

In addition to the factory options, here are some recent upgrade/maintenance on the truck all done in the last 2 years:

— Updated radio with SiriusXM, Navigation, Bluetooth, Pandora, and Backup Camera (Car has 9 Bose speakers as well)
— Wood Steering Wheel
— New Shocks and Shock Abs
— 2 New Tires
— AC Compressor, Condenser, Expansion Valve, Dryer replaced @ 290k miles with OEM equipment
— New Battery
— New Fuel Filter
— New Power Steering Pump
— New Serpentine Belt, Idler Pulley, Water Pump
— New Spark Plugs & Wires
— New Valve Cover Seals
— New Radiator, Cooling Hoses, Coolant Reservoir Tank
— New MAF sensor
— New EGR tube
— New Thermostat
— New Engine and Transmission Mounts
— Transmission recently serviced with flush/fill, new conductor plate

This ML500 actually has the Sport Package that is the same as the ML55 body with the bumpers and extended wheel arches. You also received a different set of wheels called the Evo 2 that actually look right at home on this W163. Bravo to this owner for keeping it for 300,000 miles and keeping it in excellent condition. Usually by now all these MLs look like they’ve been running around Jurassic Park for the past 15 years both inside and out. Even better, the owner did a giant list of repairs, including a full air condition system rebuild, to keep up with this car mechanically. I’ve said it before, the M113 V8 paired with the 722.6 transmission is one of, if not the most, durable engine and transmission combinations in Mercedes history. This just proves they can make it 300,000 miles or more without much fuss at all.

The owner is asking a reasonable $3,000 which I think is totally fair. The 325,000 miles will probably scare off a lot of people just with that number alone, but this one probably won’t have trouble finding a buyer in Los Angeles. There are enough Mercedes lovers out there who can see how nice this thing and how little money it is for something nice. It isn’t the most desirable color combinations in the world, but beggars can’t be choosers when talking about $3,000 Mercedes. A cool example that I’m I got to see. I just wish it was closer.

Feature Listing: 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect representation of late-1980s and early-1990s Mercedes-Benz than the W124 500E/E500. Mercedes did everything in their power to make the best sports sedan possible and then simply said ”Here you go” to the keen Mercedes buyers who yearned for something as special as the W124.036. No crazy marketing, no limited edition plaque in the center console, no neon colors, just an understated brute of a machine the .036 was and still is. In 1994, the United States market saw the ”E” jump to the front of the line to become the E500 and the front fascia become refreshed with new headlights and a new grille. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think any less of the pre-facelift 500Es, but the 1994 (and handful of 1995s not in North America) looks nearly perfect in my eyes. Not too small, not too large, just the right size. The interior was much of the same story with an array of buttons and switches laid out in just a way that isn’t overwhelming or cluttered. Under the hood was the mighty M119 that made just the right amount of power for this car for its everyday uses. Add all this up and you have classic the day the rolled out of Sindelfingen. (Side note, I love this photo with them in Zuffenhausen next to 964s.)

When you sit down and do the car math on the E500, it adds up to something that no other Mercedes can boast with its low production, Porsche DNA, hand-built status and more than respectable performance numbers. Naturally, this has kept these cars cared for and now as we are into the 25th birthday for some .036s, their prices remain very healthy. This 1994 E500 comes to us from Denver, Colorado with just over 60,000 on the odometer and my favorite wheels of all time, AMG Monoblocks. Yes, I’m biased because I have a set of these wheels, but you aren’t going to find many people that disagree with me when I say that Monoblocks look right at home on E500s. The extra chunky spokes compliment the entire body of the E500 that not many wheels can pulled off.

This one looks like a real winner from what I can see. The general rule with these cars is that if they come from an unknown source with no history, plan on at least $10,000 in ”catching up” that will get you to a good baseline. When talking about higher mile cars, that number can double. Lots of people think ”Well, it is just a W124 with some wide fenders and the SL engine in it” and hope they can cheap out on owning one. That simply isn’t the case given all the .036 specific parts and the amount of labor that is needed when it comes to maintaining these cars. Lots of times parts are even no longer available from Mercedes that presents a whole other set of problems. The seller of this car seems to have all the ducks in a row and has it to a level of no surprises when it comes to buying this car. Even better, this car looks extremely clean both inside and out. Looking under the hood, the foam intake tubes that usually are in pieces by now on most cars look to be in great shape here. Prospective buyers should obviously need to get in touch with the seller to discuss all the fine details on this one, but there is nothing I am seeing here that makes me think that this example isn’t one of the best examples out there for sale right now. The seller included a link to an entensive photo gallery of the car.

The price of $52,500 is pretty reflective of what the 500E/E500 market is right now for a quality, turn-key late model like this one. There is no cheap way to own one of these and if you do somehow get in one cheap, prepare for that five-figure repair bill that I mentioned. If you want a no-excuses car with lower miles like this, the seller is at market level for pricing. These face-lifted cars do bring a slight premium over the 1992 and 1993 models plus the Monoblocks aren’t hurting either. The .036 is a special car for a special kind of owner, and this is certainly a special example to see.

2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

During my daydreams I always try to run through my head what relatively modern Mercedes-Benz is going to desirable and collectible in the near future or beyond. I’ve racked my brain plenty of times and the list I always come up with usually isn’t very long. It is not like there are not a bunch of good cars out there, but almost every one of them is a mass-produced vehicle that was made to be the best for the first few years then discarded quickly for whatever is new. That is how the entire car business is now and I don’t think it is going to change any time soon. It is even more true with newer AMG cars because their astronomical running costs just don’t make it feasible to keep long-term. Of course, there are exceptions to everything and one of those exceptions is the W211 E55 AMG Estate. The combination of the M113K in an estate body, which everyone seems to love, has proven to be one of the most desirable Mercedes of the past dozen years or so. It isn’t just because it is a wagon, because AMG keeps blessing the US market with these super wagons, but rather it is reasonable enough to live with when it comes to repairing and maintaining this estate. Thus, demand stays high, prices stay high and you have a vehicle that will go down as a young classic. This 2006 up for sale in New York is just one of these examples and given its price and mileage, is probably a pretty good deal.

Originally purchased from Mercedes Larchmont with about 4k miles. I believe they bought it from Mercedes USA where it was used for a few months as a Mercedes executive car. I’ve owned it since. Only reason I’m selling is that I got an FF, which makes it a bit redundant.

This example painted in Tanzanite Blue Metallic with blue leather and burred walnut trim looks really nice from the photos that are provided. In my opinion, these wagons just have the perfect look which is not too aggressive, but just enough small touches that you know this isn’t just a regular old family hauler. Like I mentioned earlier, the real key with these cars is the M113K, which can be modified to make a ton of power, but won’t break the bank to own and can actually be fixed without much trouble from an experienced DIY’er. Don’t get me wrong, the new W213 E63S Estate that does 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds is an amazing car, but you aren’t working on that thing on a Saturday afternoon in your home garage. This 2006 is reasonable enough to do almost everything by yourself and if you have the Mercedes diagnostic software, probably can do everything by yourself. The just 56,000 miles covered is really low for these cars as most people that bought them and used them liberally as daily drivers. The owner selling this replaced it with a Ferrari FF, so I can understand why he is moving it along.

The asking price of $35,000 is in the ballpark for what kind of money these are bringing. Examples with around 100,000 miles usually sell for between $25,000-30,000, so it isn’t unreasonable for the slightly higher asking price given the low miles. People who buy these aren’t doing it by accident and seek these out specifically because it is what they really want. I don’t think the owner will have a tough time finding a buyer for around that price and judging by the response to the listing for the car, it won’t be long until this one finds a new home.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL

When looking at last week’s 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD, the claim of it being the best sedan in the world (at the time) came up. Those were someone else’s words, not mine, but I am certainly not going to argue against it because I actually own a 1980 300SD and it is one of my daily drivers. 1980 was also the last year of the W116 and the W126 was already on the roads late in that year in Europe with 1981 being the first model year for the new S-Class in North America. The W126 had to continue on the legacy of being the best luxury sedan in the world and again, at the time, it would tough to say it wasn’t. You could have the efficient OM617 diesel or two V8 options in the Gen 1 W126 with the 380SE/L or the 500SEL. Today’s car I wanted to check out is a 1983 500SEL but it isn’t the standard North American spec cars you are used to seeing. This W126 is a Euro-spec car with some neat options, both inside and out.

Flawless European bumpers and headlights still remain
This beautiful 500SEL is one of the cleanest examples to come across. New price tag was over $70,000 US dollar. This was was special ordered with additional upgrades. Cosmetically this car is near perfect, interior is as nice as it was when it was first delivered. Exterior is equally clean with a few minor blimishes (door ding, scratch). This car spent its entire life in the dry southwest of the United States. Meticulously garaged maintained with pride of ownership. The previous owner fell ill and the car sat for approximately 4 years. Mechanically the steering is extremely tight with a new car feel. The transmission shifts properly. However, because the car sat for so many years, it could benefit greatly from a major tune up. The idle is a little rough and the fumes (perhaps bad gas) is strong. Last, the car seems to run hot. Therefore, a PPI is highly recommended prior to bidding. The car is located in San Diego, CA and is being sold “as is” “where is” International buyers welcome. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Please serious buyers only.

Starting on the outside, these European-spec W126s have slightly shorter bumpers than North American cars that when you look really close at, you can see the difference. It might not jump out at you at first, but if you are used to looking at North American cars forever or put this car beside a North American car, you can definitely tell. These wheels don’t do much for me at all as all that chrome clashes with the gold badges in the rear so I’d much rather see a nice set of 15 inch Bundts over these aftermarket wheels. Under the hood you have the M117 V8 but you might notice something different behind the driver’s headlight. That is a hydraulic tank for the hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system that was carried over from the W116 6.9. This was never an option on North American cars and even pretty rare for European cars. The system is wonderful when it works and is pretty durable, but it isn’t for the faint of heart if time comes to replace one of the shocks. Rebuilding them is usually the route to go as a new set is in the thousands of dollars if you can even find them. Inside, we find the rare velour interior with the orthopedic front seats. You can always tell if a W126 has this option by seeing the little balls to pump up air like you are checking your blood pressure. I’m sure that was fun for kids back when these were new. Otherwise, everything looks really nice on this car outside of that odd speaker grill that was added on the lower knee panel on the passenger side.

Priced at $7,900, I think that is pretty fair for what this car is. One thing to note is that the seller says that there are a few minor mechanical issues that should be looked into but I don’t think it is anything major. Even with that, this is a lot of car for not a lot of money. If you love W126s, this is a really exciting car for you given all the options and stuff I didn’t even mention like the reclining rear seat. Being in California, I doubt this one will have to wait long to find a home. It surely deserves one.

1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic Estate

Image may be NSFW.

Update 11/29/18: Although it was listed as sold a few weeks ago, this E320 4Matic has been relisted with a Buy It Now of $2,950. Maybe another good chance to get a cheap winter beater if you have access to a steam cleaner!

Update 11/16/18: This E320 Estate sold for $1,757.

Winter is mere weeks away and I’m still on the hunt for a new-to-me winter vehicle to battle the snow and ice. My current winter beater, a 1997 Land Rover Discovery that I’ve had for the past 13 years, is on life support. Both front fender wells are rusting away at an alarming pace, the 4.0 liter V8 that has been around since the mid-1960s (!) is sounding awfully crunchy and I swear it gets around 11 mpg. I told myself I was going to buy something reliable to replace it, so I started hunting for a Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX470/GX470 only soon to find out that you can’t buy one for $2,200 like you can Land Rovers. They aren’t all that plentiful on the used market thanks to people taking them to their graves. Well, the time is ticking and I might have to consider options. One of those options is a Mercedes-Benz W210 4Matic because I might as well stick to what I know. Even better, an E320 4Matic Estate would fit the bit quite nicely with the extra cargo space and no one would confuse it with my E55 if I bought one in silver. Well, wouldn’t you know this 1999 popped up for sale that would fit my needs quite well. The only problem is that it is 2,600 miles away. Such is life.

This 1999 MERCEDES E320 4MATIC ALL WHEEL DRIVE WAGON was sold new in the San Francisco Bay area on July 15, 1999. The car is finished in very rare color option #257 Circongruen mica/Dark Turquoise Metallic.
The cabin is trimmed with #205A Mushroom Pebble Quartz Leather with optional Heated front seats with burl walnut accents. Factory amenities include electically adjustable front seats with the memory package which includes the sterring column. It has dual climate controls and a electically steering column, dual air bags as well as side air bags. This car was built in Germany and shipped to California on 5/26/99 as a California spec car which is rare as most ALL WHEEL DRIVE vehicles were sold in the United States to locations where it snows more often than in the San Francisco Bay Area where it last snowed one day over 40 years ago.

This is a California Car which means unlike most of the 4-Matics were sold to areas where they rust out.
If you are looking for a pristine show car this is not it, if you are looking for an affordable sport wagon with All Wheel Drive with a powerful Mercedes V6 with 221 horspower capable of 150 plus miles per hour (so I am told) that gets good gas mileage, that you can take the dogs in, or pack up the gang and take sking or kayaking or mountain biking or any out door activitys and in a pinch all the seats fold flat wnat two pwople can sleep and with space for up to 7 people with 7 shoulder seats belts with all the saftey features like Anti lock brakes, Traction Control and not only front air bags but side front air bags as well with out breaking the bank look no further as this is the car.

The 4-Matics where built in Austria and designed to be the ultimate All wheel drive wagon with the original MSRP at over $50,000. This Mercedes Benz was designed for areas like the Swiss Alps where Ultimate Traction in slippery conditions is a concern this system increases traction and improves performance on slippery roads, or if you can use it like I did for taking my dogs to the beach and to kids sporting events you would never know it is an ALL WHEEL DRIVE vehicle as it drives just like a Mercedes
Why would you buy an over priced Japanese vehicle made by Fuji HEavy Industries in Lafayette Indiana when you could have an actual Mercedes Benz made in Germany/Austria the world leader in high quality luxury automobiles that will do the same thing for less than a preowned Hyundai

This is a fully loaded car with dual power front seats with memory that are both heated with two levels of heat as well as dual climate controled air conditioning and heat where the driver can have the ice cold air blasting at 65 degrees and the other front passenger can have her controls set at 85 degrees. The car has the optional high end BOSE sound system mated to an Alpine CD system and is equipped with an I-pod connection in the glove box. It also has a factory Alarm

At first glance on the outside of this S210, you would think everything is pretty nice. No rust since it is a California car and no major body damage from what I can see. Then you open up the doors. This is a special level of dirty that is usually reserved for cars on Craigslist that have photos with a thumb over half the lens. I know these wagons were bought to be used as work horses, but that doesn’t mean you beat the horse while you are working it. Even the dash has a giant hole in a speaker cover that I had no idea was even possible. Sadly, this car is probably at the point of no return even if you tried to clean it up a little because of how much of leather is ripped and worn away. I’m sure this car having six owners probably contributed to the mess here, but my goodness is it sad inside once was a nice car.

This auction is no reserve and I’m not going to predict any big numbers for this car. The W210 is plentiful in California thanks to the lack of rust that usually kills these cars so it’s not like someone is desperate to find one no matter what the condition. If you made me guess I would say it will bring maybe $2,000 if someone really is in love with the color of this car, but I have a hard time even at that price because of how bad the interior is. The photos are amazing, but that ends up hurting the car because it shows how bad everything really is inside. Who knows, maybe this one lives on for another 19 years. No reason it can’t — unless you bathe it in salt.

2014 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6

If you can remember from a few weeks ago I took a deep dive into a 1999 Mercedes-Benz G500 that was transformed by a couple of guys in a garage in Western Ukraine into a pretty damn good recreation of a 6×6. I am still trying to figure out how they pulled it off so well because it isn’t like you can go grab a spare 6×6 body from the parts counter at your local Mercedes-Benz dealer and Mercedes isn’t giving out technical sheets for a vehicle they built less than 100 of. Nonetheless, the price was actually pretty fair seeing how much work was put into and of course, how much a real 6×6 will run you. Luck would have it that I found a real 2014 G63 AMG 6×6 up for sale in Arizona with just a few thousand miles on the odometer. The price? Are you sitting down?

Not much of a surprise that this 6×6 was built for the Middle East and comes to the US from Dubai. Since these were never officially sold in the United States, a good amount of work is required to make these things legal for American roads and it looks like all the heavy lifting is already done. It is also no surprise that with just 3,800 miles, it looks pretty much perfect as well. Either this truck was jumping sand dunes in Dubai, or jumping curbs at the mall because it couldn’t fit in a regular parking space. The red diamond stitched leather inside is just as crazy and in your face as everything on the outside of this, but you pretty much expect this from something as wild as the 6×6 is. Unlike the homemade 6×6 from earlier this month, this G does have the twin-turbocharged 5.5 liter V8 that will get this monster to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. Not bad for nearly 9,000 pounds.

The asking price for this ultimate W463 is a whopping $1,695,000. That is Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport money. Granted, the Veyron will probably cost you more in the long run and you can’t climb a mountain in one either. It seems Mercedes limiting production to just under 100 did wonders for the values of these as the MSRP was a little over $500,000 when new in 2014. I’m sure this thing being able to turn the heads of nearly every living thing when driving past didn’t hurt either. My take? This is a ”money is no object” vehicle. This is for those who absolutely no budget when it comes to toys and probably doesn’t even know what the word budget means. That 1999 6×6 in Ukraine seems like a real steal now at just $250,000.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Coupe

The more I look at the Mercedes-Benz W124 Coupe, the more appetizing it gets. I checked out a really nice 1994 painted in Tourmaline Green a few months ago for what I thought was a really fair price considering what it is. These C124s are not going to get any cheaper and the clean ones are shooting up in value with the facelifted 1994 and 1995 models leading the charge. Today’s car, a 1994 up for sale in Seattle, Washington, has some upgrades that you usually don’t see on these sleeper coupes. The thing is, I’m not a really a big fan of them. Let me explain.

Regretfully selling my beautiful 94 E320 Coupe

Yes, I think I barely driven it like 5 miles since I got it! Didn’t even get a chance to register it
(title transferred though)

Unfortunately I have taken on a couple new projects and I have absolutely no room for this gorgeous car.
No way can I ever leave it outside; it deserves to be garaged 24/7!

I had big plans for this car. I got a complete C36 AMG motor w/chipped non-ASR ECU
(will advertise separately for that). I also got a complete 722.6 conversion kit (ditto)
that I was going to put in this car. Sux that now I have to get rid of all this stuff.

BACKGROUND:

See carfax reports. As you can see, it spent originally in Texas, but mostly in California.
I.e. NO RUST ANYWHERE! Looks like the PO did have a minor front bumper accident
(receipts shows this) which he felt was a good time to get the Sacco panels and rear
bumper redone in black. I have thousands of dollars in receipts from the PO, but not from previous owners.

Car is located just a few mile south of Seattle

GOOD STUFF:
no rust
no scratches
straight body
99% things work
Wiring harness replaced w/2003 harness (see pic)
AC blows cold
No oil leaks anywhere (so can assume head gasket was done)
Runs flawlessly
Updated front grille in some of the pics (original included)
Updated awesome newer steering wheel (original included)
Interior in real good condition (video will point out flaws)
OZ Opera II 18″x8″, 18″x9″ staggered wheels
Michelin 225/45-18, 255-40-18 tires w/65% tread left (no rubbing, rear fenders slightly rolled).
New Soundstream amp
Bazooka Sub
Alpine unit w/bluetooth, etc.
~137,202 miles
Receipts showing maintenance
Newer pics shows a console chrome surround
Car cover included
Clear title
Clean Carfax
Bilstein shocks
H&R Springs

MINOR NITS:
Rear head rests down operation recently stopped working (works if you connect the vacuum tubes under rear seat; suspect switch so ordered a new switch that’s coming)
Right side mirror sometimes gets stuck
Very slight, minor cracks in the console wood.
Driver’s seatbelt presenter holder has cracks/repairs. Included is a newer one.

I really wanted to fall in love with this coupe but all these small things, that admittedly are fixable, just aren’t doing it for me. The bones of this car are really nice with a black on black setup with no rust. It has a little under 138,000 miles and had some big maintenance items done like the wiring harness and a (claimed) headgasket. The problem is all these aftermarket touches on the car that just clutter it up. The clear sidemarkers, grille, giant OZ wheels, lowered suspension, big sound system, chrome trim and that god awful steering wheel just leave me with a sour taste in my mouth. I understand modifying your car to your tastes, but don’t expect others to feel the same way and certainly don’t expect them to pay a premium either. I just wish this was a stock car without all this random stuff that was added to it. The steering wheel looks totally ridiculous in a car like this and isn’t even that practical because it cuts off some of the gauge cluster because it is a much smaller diameter.

The seller is asking $7,900 which I think is in the ballpark, but there is probably a reason it has been listed for several weeks and hasn’t found a home yet. Not to mention they couldn’t even be bothered to fix the crooked hood star before taking photos of it for this listing. If this was a totally stock car, then yes, $7,900 is reasonable. All this aftermarket stuff? I think you are going to have to come down some. I know the seller includes all the stock parts, but putting that stuff back on takes time and time is money whether you are doing it or paying someone to do it. All in all, a car with a ton of potential, but not quite there for me right at this moment.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to daily drive a car that isn’t 38 years-old and has such luxuries like airbags, ABS and a modern climate control system. Don’t get me wrong, I love my W116 Mercedes-Benz 300SD, but sometimes I yearn for heated seats and a tire selection greater than three different brands. Once in a while I will see what kind of options are out there for more modern replacements for my W116 and today’s car, a 1998 E300, might just be a perfect combination of modern amenities and the old school diesel feel. This W210 hails from the Northeast with only 100,000 miles and in what should be a total shocker to almost everyone reading this, has no rust. Is this the answer to all my wildest dreams and fantasies?

These diesel-powered W210s will never win any beauty contests but that really isn’t what their purpose was. Much like its predecessors W124 and W123, these were made to be workhorses. The turbocharged OM606 is a really fine engine that is capable of 35 mpg even on its bad days. 175 horsepower isn’t anything to write home about but the torque of 243 lb⋅ft is where it really shines. This is much improved over the non-turbo OM606 in these cars that made just 155 lb⋅ft. The sedate beige Smoke Silver paint and beige Parchment leather interior matches the subdued quality of the power plant but is fitting and looks great throughout. The condition is what you would expect from around 100,000 miles but I just can’t believe I am not seeing any rust. Usually any early W210 from the Northeast are a rusty mess by now so I assume this one hasn’t seen many winters — if any. The seller also notes that the car suffers from no pixilation of the displays as is common and has just had a fresh oil change featuring Shell Rotella synthetic.

The price of $7,500 is what the market bears currently on clean E300s. As customary, the diesel cars bring a large premium over the gas models and this is exactly the case with this car. Not a lot of people are going to sign up for this car at this price, but there are people out there searching for these exact cars because their diesel W210 has 380,000 miles and a family of possums living in the giant rust hole in the trunk lid. One thing that surprised me about this car was its $47,000 window sticker from 1998. That is over $72,000 in today’s dollars, which is really expensive for what you get from this car. That kind of money bought you a whole lot of cars back in the late-’90s, yet people gladly signed up for the Mercedes instead. That tells you the kind of draw for a particular crowd these legendary diesel Mercedes-Benz models bring with them.

The W463 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet is one of those vehicles that you might have a hunch is special, but aren’t quite sure how special until you really look at it and then ultimately look at what kind of prices they are commanding. I’ve taken a look at these G Cabrios before and my consensus is that they are loved for two reasons. The first being that they are extremely rare and people love to have what others can’t get. Second reason being that it is simply a G-Wagen with a power convertible top. Jeeps and Defenders with cloth tops are cool and all, but just easily pushing a button to raise or lower the top on your SUV that can literally climb a mountain is a luxury that people will seriously pay for. This 2006 G500 Cabrio up for sale in Switzerland looks to be case once again.

Last major service was done in 2013 at a Mercedes Dealer in Switzerland, car hasn’t been driven much since then.

Heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, OEM Mercedes Brush Guard, 2 keys for the car, 2 keys for the guard, all books and European Navigation CD.

Blue Illuminated Door Sills, tool kit, emergency triangle and medical kit. Aftermarket bluetooth wireless handsfree phone kit also installed.

Car is perfect!

We want to gain a long term customer with this sale, regardless of it is another dealership or an individual buyer. We want to be the ones you give your business to find rare cars like this one!

We look forward to working with you.

Just to be clear here, I got in touch with the seller and even though the auction says this G is in Houston, Texas, it is actually in Switzerland. This isn’t ideal if you are looking to pickup the car in America and I’m not sure why the seller doesn’t come out and say it isn’t in Houston. The good news is that these are able to be federalized by a company in Baltimore, Maryland of all places but you will need to add front and rear side markers, among other things, that this Cabrio lacks. Other than that massive headache, this thing looks really nice. Usually these are used as leisure vehicles at vacation homes and things of the same ilk so when these do come up for sale, they aren’t in too bad a shape. The tight photos aren’t helping anyone get a good look at the W463, but we can assume nothing is out of sorts with it.

Now lets talk about price. The bidding has reached $100,000 already and I don’t think it is even close to stopping. The best comparable example I could find was a 2005 Cabriolet with 23,000 miles that sold for $140,000 at auction back in the spring. Granted, this example was already federalized and ready to go to its new owner so that maybe had some influence on the price, but I don’t think this one is going to be too far off. The example I linked to in my introduction was a 1999 and listed for $150,000 and I’m sure it didn’t have trouble finding a new owner. My guess? I think $125,000 wouldn’t be crazy if it was a North American bidder. If a European buyer wants it, probably even more. I told you these things were expensive.

2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate

Last week I looked at a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate that drew quite of bit of reaction from the comments. I say that as a good thing because most were pretty happy with the condition but thought the price was a little high (which I can say I don’t really disagree with). Well wouldn’t you know it, another W211 E55 AMG Estate popped up for sale with even fewer miles, in the same area and an even a cheaper price. I thought this might be an answer to what everyone was looking for. There’s just one slightly big problem with this one though: it is by far the worst condition E55 Estate I’ve ever come across.

The good news is this one is painted in Mocha Black with the amazingly smooth Designo Sand colored interior. Another plus for this one is it has just a hair over 87,000 miles. There ends the good news. The really bad news is that this thing is beat up. The front bumper is crooked and scuffed up, the grill is bent in one spot, the hood star is missing, the headlights are all frosted up, the foglight is cracked, the rear tint is a mess and there is a giant dent in the rear hatch. Just to pile on, the AMG double spoke wheels are also missing. Thankfully the interior looks much better. I personally love the sand-colored leather seats and even though it clashes a little with the wood, I can look past that. My guess is that this was used for a Hamptons work horse and when looking at the big picture, keeping an older Mercedes station wagon in pristine condition doesn’t matter all that much when you are a part of that world. Obviously all this stuff can be fixed and is surely worth fixing, but this doesn’t fare well for the mechanically condition of this car because the listing has absolutely zero information regarding anything.

If this car didn’t have that laundry list of issues, I would say that $28,500 is a really fair price for this one. Unfortunately, all these issues add up quickly so you can figure many more thousands to get it back to nice condition and that isn’t including any mechanical things that might need addressed. I think under $25,000 would be a better price point as it sits right now. Surely you can buy it as-is and drive it, but it deserves better and will probably hold it’s value a lot better if it was refreshed. Either way, another option for the admirers of these.
